Dayo's Angel Episode Six
Bring her to me’ Larkin requested, he needed to work fast before she was traced to him.
The room was painted light blue, there was a huge bed filled with rose flowers, one window with a curtain whose floral pattern was superb, a bedside lamp, a chandelier and a dressing table.
‘Go in, you’ll like it’ Linda pushed her in.
‘It’s so beautiful’ Moyo smiled, she had wished for a luxurious life, but her aunt didn’t have much and she never complained.
‘Make yourself comfortable’ Linda replied and sat close to the dressing mirror.
‘See, I don’t know how this may sound, but I really need your help, I need to get out of here as fast as I can, please help me escape Linda, you seem like a very nice person’ Moyo begged. She had to leave this place, she’d read about such places, where young girls were kidnapped and forced into prostitution. She was quite sure that was the business that went on there.
‘Escape’? Linda laughed and stared at the mirror.
She couldn’t even bear to look at her distorted face, Larkin had blinded her in one eye when she’d attempted to run from him and now Moyo was asking for her help?
‘Yes, I don’t belong here; I need to get out’ Moyo paced the room.
‘So who belongs here? We all don’t belong here, we were kidnapped, just like you and bundled up in this hell hole, Larkin feeds off the proceeds we make for him. Men troop in here all the time, some of us strip for them, some of us have sex with them and some steal from them but we don’t get to leave with them, only one person has stepped outside these walls’ Linda gestured with her hands.”
The name she dared not whisper, Larkin had forced her to swear an oath of secrecy, no one else could ever know about their plan, only Adaeze had stepped out of the walls and that was ten years ago.
‘That is not possible, I would not be locked in here, I am going out’ Moyo stamped her feet in frustration. She could see it in Linda’s eye, truth was deeply buried in it and the truth scared her.
‘You don’t have a choice darling, just prepare yourself for the worst, you’ll meet all sorts of men, and you’re really beautiful, just like Linda, sorry I meant Adaeze’ Linda stuttered.
‘Adaeze? Can I see her picture? I have heard this name a thousand times already’ Moyo fell on the bed, she decided to relax her mind, but one thing was for sure, she would get out of Larkin’s grip, who was he anyway? She had so many questions.
‘I don’t have her picture, Cindy does, we’ll talk to her tomorrow, now go to sleep’ Linda said.
‘Tell me about Larkin’ Moyo ignored her order.
‘Larkin? You ask too many questions, ones that could get you into trouble’ Linda scoffed, the girl before her reminded her of her younger self, she had acted without thinking, and Larkin had destroyed an eye, she wouldn’t let Moyo go through the same thing.
‘Just tell me’ Moyo urged.
‘Please Moyo, I see my younger self in you, don’t do anything stupid, look at my face, it’s distorted and ugly, please just accept this, it’s our fate’ Linda replied.
‘It’s not my fate, you stayed because you chose to, I’m not ending up here, no way, now tell me about him’ Moyo scoffed. She was a fighter and she would fight for her freedom, just like she escaped from her aunt’s husband.
‘I don’t know much about Larkin’ Linda lied and stared at her mirror and the picture that was stuck to its edge.
She couldn’t tell anybody about him, else Larkin would kill her, only her knew the truth because she was the key to everything, the key that would finally unveil his riches, maybe after then, he’d kill her, the thought of dying at his hands terrified her and she shuddered.
‘Who is that man’? Moyo saw she was attached to the picture on her mirror.
‘Uhmmm, a friend’ Linda averted her eyes.
‘Friend? He looks like you’ Moyo pulled the picture and stared at the middle-aged man.
Linda looked like she was going to say something. Just then, they heard a knock on the door.
‘Linda! Open up’ Abu pounded on the door.
‘What do they want now’? Linda wondered.
‘Larkin wants to see her’ Abu stepped in without invitation and dragged Moyo outside.
‘Please be gentle with her, she’s not an animal, she’s human’ Linda wasn’t pleased with the way she was being dragged.
‘I am a human being too’ Linda whimpered as tears soaked her cheeks.
‘You stayed because you chose to’ Moyo’s words rang in her ears and she realised there was truth in it.
She had been the only one to make an attempt at escaping, the other girls were afraid, too scared to make a move, but Moyo was right, she needed her freedom. Once Larkin was done with her, he’d kill her to protect his secret and to stay alive, she needed to kill him first.
‘Lord help me’ she whispered in a shaky voice as she caressed the picture of her beloved father.
‘Don’t push me around you brute’ Moyo fought against Abu’s grip, why was he so savage?
‘Shut your mouth bitch else I’d shut it up for you’ he spat at her.
‘How dare you?’ Moyo was infuriated and without hesitation bit his arm, he screamed.
‘I’m going to teach you a lesson ho’ he cursed and began to work on his belt.
‘Go ahead, I’d smash your head into this wall’ Moyo replied, she had learnt one thing since her parents died, the world was for fighters, the world never respected nice people, they respected ruggedness.
‘Bitch you got nerve’ Abu came at her with his belt but Shantal’s screams stopped him.
‘What’s going on here? and why do you want to lash her’? Shantal asked.
‘Just let him come at me Shantal, I’d kill him first’ Moyo hissed.
‘You see? Bitch be running her mouth like a tap, I’m going to make her humble and scared’ Abu sneered at her.
‘You are the bitch, your mother is a bitch and all your sisters’ Moyo fired back to Shantal’s surprise.
‘Moyo….’ Shantal called slowly, this wasn’t the girl that had entered into the Harem earlier, this one seemed like a caged cat, which was ready to claw its way out.
‘Yes’? She arched a brow.
‘Don’t speak to Abu this way, he is well respected around here and you should mind the way you speak to him’ Shantal touched her arm lightly.
‘Okay, I’ve heard you, can we go now’? Moyo sighed.
‘You owe me an apology’ Abu wore a frown.
‘Says who’? Moyo scoffed and kept walking.
‘Please don’t harm her, I guess this is her own coping mechanism to being kidnapped, okay’? Shantal tried to pacify Abu.
‘Get your hands off me bitch’ Abu eyed her angrily and walked away.
‘Poor child, so much anger in you’ Shantal shrugged and kept walking, Linda had sent a note through one of the girls to her, that was how they communicated, they were not allowed to use cell phones.
Minutes later, they stood before Larkin in his office.
‘Abu? What happened’? Larkin wondered; he looked dishevelled.
Moyo sized the man up, she was no longer scared, no one could terrify her.
‘This bitch here attacked me’ Abu pointed at her.
‘Well like I said, you are the bitch and your mother too, bitch’ Moyo sneered back at him.
‘How lovely is she when upset, I like you already’ Larkin burst out laughing as the two stared daggers at each other.
‘Now put your differences aside Moyo and Abu, we have a lot of work to do’ he became serious and turned on the television.
She went still as she saw her aunt crying on T.V, so they’d noticed her absence?
‘Who is that woman? And why did you run away? Tell me everything’ Larkin commanded.
‘I don’t know her’ Moyo inhaled deeply as tears welled up in her eyes, she had not meant to cause the woman’s tears, but her husband had made advances towards her.
