Dayo's Angel
‘I am sorry Dayo, something bad has just happened’ Wale said.
‘What is it? What happened to Moyo’? he asked.
‘Not Moyo, her family were murdered in cold blood last night, their bodies were identified by some neighbors, something is going on, this cannot be a coincidence, just keep your ears to the ground, find anything I could work with, I have a feeling your Moyo friend is in trouble, maybe she was on the run from whoever killed her parents’ Wale said.
‘Okay, thank you, we’ll do as you’ve said’ Dayo replied and watched the lawyer disappear.
‘This is all your fault, I always warned you about Emem,if she had not showed up her lousy self, maybe Moyo would still be safe’ Dayo poured the blame on his friend.
‘Are you seriously doing this? I care for her as much as you do, what if you ask your sister? You know her and Emem are close, how did Emem get to know about Moyo if Adaeze had not told her’? Kayode felt Dayo was being too hard on him, he had never invited Emem to his place in the first instance.
‘Adaeze? She could never do something like that’ Dayo rushed to her defense.
‘How about we ask her? Cause I am quite sure someone who saw me with Moyo did, and only two people did, you and Ada’ Kayode answered back.
‘Adaeze’! Dayo was petrified, if his sister did something like that, then he’d be disappointed.
‘Adaeze’! he called again, but there was no answer, so he rushed to her bedroom, he prayed she was innocent.
He paused as he got to the entrance of her room, she had been on a call, that was why she didn’t hear him, something about the call got him curious, she kept mentioning her father’s name and he fell silent so as to hear more.
‘So where did Larkin send you this time’? Adaeze asked. Larkin wasn’t no fool, soon he was going to come for her if she did not comply and she wasn’t ready to play by his rules, but first, she needed to build her own empire of fighters and to do that, she had to destroy his’ first.
‘How is that your business Linda’? Abu sneered at her, he knew the secret, Larkin had let him in on it.
‘Don’t call me that name, I am a new person now’ Adaeze sneered as he reminded her of her past.
‘Why are you calling me? The boss wants to see you face to face, you need to come to the harem’ Abu said.
‘The harem? And do what? I don’t belong there anymore, I need to see you Abu, there’s something I must tell you, it’s really worth it’ Ada said.
‘Worth it? When and where’? he wondered what she was after.
‘Tomorrow, 9P.M, Blue Mountain Lounge’ Ada replied.
‘Hello Sis’ Dayo cleared his throat, he’d heard enough.
‘Dayo! You scared me, how long have you been there’? her heart skipped a bit, what if he’d heard her discussion?
‘Not too long, you mentioned your father in your phone call, Larkin right’? Dayo raised his brows.
Her mouth was dry, she didn’t know what to say, she needed to say something before Dayo began to suspect her.
‘Uhmmm, I was speaking to a guy, he’s like a tracker, so I wanted him to help me find my father, I don’t know where he is, i…lost contact with him when I left llinois for Nigeria, so I want his help’ she stuttered.
‘Oh, I guess that’s why you avoided talking about him’ Dayo stared deeply into her eyes, she seemed evasive.
‘Yes, yes’ she nodded.
‘And the ‘harem’? what’s that’? he asked, she’d mentioned the word twice in her call.
‘Oh, the ‘Harem’? it’s actually a club I used to party at, it’s no big deal’ she replied.
‘Okay, one last question’ Dayo rubbed his chin thoughtfully, Ada had been a clubber and he had not stopped her, he only warned her to be careful.
‘Yes’? Ada swallowed hard.
‘Did you tell Emem about Moyo’? Dayo asked.
‘Yes, I did it for Kayode’s good’ she couldn’t lie no more, not with the dark glare Dayo offered her.
‘Shit! How could you? Have you forgotten how reckless Emem could be? Now because of her we don’t even know where that poor girl is, if anything bad should happen to her, I wouldn’t forgive you, are you aware her parents have also been killed? She could be in danger right now because she was on the run, just do something, find a way out of this situation’ he swirled round and banged the door loudly behind him.
‘I didn’t mean to’ her heart ached. That was the first time her brother had raised his voice on her, so Moyo was not who Kay said she was?
‘I messed up’ Ada paused. She had seen Moyo as a threat, she loved Dayo deeply, though he was too blind to see that and when she caught him looking that way at Moyo, she felt jealous.
Though Kay had presented her as his girlfriend, she wasn’t still comfortable with her around, that was why she had called Emem.
Now Dayo was angry with her, it confirmed her fears that he actually cared for the girl, she wished her death wherever she was, no one could take Dayo from her, she had her plans.
She was going to kill Larkin with the help of Abu then she would tell Dayo the truth, everything that happened, then she’d tell him about her feelings, Dayo was soft hearted, he would forgive her and love her back.
The Harem sizzled with customers, men were the majority, you see, the Harem was a club where men came to tend to their needs, some came to watch strippers, while others came to have sex, it was a haven and an outlet for bottled up desires.
‘What do you have for me Abu’? Larkin lit his cigarette, he sat at the deepest end of the Harem.
‘It was successful boss’ Abu answered. He had killed Moyo’s aunt and her husband, that way, no other person would be in search for her, that would keep her safe for their business.
‘Good. Let’s drink to that’ Larkin snapped his fingers and some waiters brought a basket filled with drinks.
‘Thanks boss’ Abu whispered. He had so much in his mind, Adaeze had called him and had asked to meet with him, he contemplated telling the boss about it, but he decided to meet with her first.
Larkin had saved himself and Adaeze from the streets, they’d grown up together, and he always had a thing for her, but Larkin had been quick to notice and had warned them not to engage in anything funny. Larkin was a selfish man, Abu swallowed his drink while battling with his thoughts, he wondered when his slavery to Larkin would end. For the first time, he realized his life wasn’t his’, Larkin had stolen his freedom.
‘What do you think about Moyo? i wanted using her as a pawn since Ada is being too slow, we could set a meeting, so the doctor falls in love with her, that way, we swindle him of his money, what do you think’? Larkin asked.
‘I don’t trust Moyo much, she would be difficult to control, let’s give Ada one more chance’ Abu replied.
‘One more chance eh? I fear we’re running out of time, it took me two years to cook up that plan and she’s slow about it’ Larkin complained.
‘I know Adaeze, she always delivers’Abu replied.
‘What do you think about Moyo? I want to rename her’Larkin asked.
‘Boss, I think we should let her be for now, she needs time to adjust to this place’ Abu advised and Larkin nodded in agreement. Off all the workers he had, he trusted Abu the most, he was like the son he never had and he had great plans for him.
