Dayo's Angel episode 9
She had made up her mind to be free once again, this time she was prepared to die, but she wouldn’t end up in the Harem, she had to break free and take what rightfully belonged to her.
‘So why did you call us here’? Cindy closed the door gently behind her.
Linda had already opened up about her plans to Shantal who seemed interested, but she was yet to tell them her secret. She needed to be sure they wouldn’t betray her to Larkin.
‘Relax would you’? Shantal glared at the girl. They’d decided to meet in a place where no one would suspect, the kitchen.
‘Like I already explained to Shantal, though this may sound stupid, considering the fact, that I have lost an eye, I still believe there’s a way out of this place, and I want us to work together, so we can find it’ Linda started..
‘Seriously? Are you really doing this? Do you want to get us killed? Can’t you understand that there’s no way out for us’? Cindy raised her hands in the air.
‘This place is underground, Harem is an underground club. Larkin has a sea of monsters that he keeps to guard us, even when we are having sex with his clients, they’re hiding somewhere to listen to our conversation, please Linda, I beg you, I don’t want to get into trouble, I need to go excuse me’ Cindy stormed out of the kitchen angrily.
‘Cindy! Cindy wait!’ Linda called after her but she had already gone.
‘Leave her be, she’s scared, who wouldn’t be? Larkin is heartless’ Shantal pulled her back.
‘So are you in this or not’? Linda braced herself up for Shantal’s response.
‘I am, I can’t die in here, Larkin brought me here as a child, now I am in my mid forties, I need to get out and die in the open’ Shantal said.
‘Good, there’s something I must tell you first’ Linda licked her lips nervously and prayed she was doing the right thing.
Moyo had done nothing in the few days she’d been in the Harem, time passed aimlessly and she lost count of the days. She only slept, woke up and ate, boredom had begun to tag at her like a needle to a thread.
She had gathered from the discussion of the other girls that the Harem was a club, an underground one, where men especially the la crème of the society came to unleash their perversion on them.
Moyo knew escaping would prove very difficult, but she was willing to try, escaping from an underground club, How does one do that? She thought to herself.
She rose to her feet and scanned the room Linda wasn’t there, lately, her roommate had been acting weird. Most times, she was quiet and deep in thoughts, and she noticed she hung out more with Shantal.
Moyo wondered if she had offended her in any way, or was she avoiding her or something
She shrugged and pushed the thoughts away, then stretched out her legs lazily and yawned, she had dreamt of him again, it was going to be difficult getting his image out of her face, Dayo was glued there.
The picture on the mirror kept calling her, Linda seemed evasive about the man on the picture. She’d claimed he was a friend, but the resemblance was too striking. Moyo decided to take a closer look at the picture, since she had nothing doing, she mIphy as well snoop round Linda’s things to find out exactly what she was hiding.
‘Here we are’ she pulled the picture from the mirror and stared at it. The man looked much like Linda, that must have been her father.
She wasn’t still satisfied, so she pulled a drawer that was attached to the dressing mirror and was surprised to see more pictures. This time, it was that of a woman’s.
‘Pretty’ Moyo smiled faintly as she remembered her own mother who’d died leaving her to face the harsh realities of the world alone.
She sighed and caressed the photo, she thought about her aunt, who was still searching for her. She felt really bad, putting the woman through such heart ache, but that was the only way out for her. One day, her aunt’s husband would’ve succeeded in raping her and would’ve cooked up lies to her aunt about it.
FOR ADAEZE, MUMMY’S PET
The picture had fallen out of Moyo’s hands and as she bent to pick It, she read those words on its back. So that was her mum? Who was Adaeze?
She returned the picture from where she’d picked it from and decided to stretch her legs by walking round, she didn’t like spending time with the other girls. If they weren’t drinking, they were smoking or talking about the rich men they’d bedded. That wasn’t her life and she didn’t plan to be like them, all she yearned for, was a way to escape the Harem.
‘Watch where you’re going Cindy’ Moyo had almost bumped into her, she seemed angry with someone and she was ready to take down anything or anyone that threatened to fall on her part.
‘Your roommate Linda is annoying, go to that kitchen and give her some clue on how to be wise’ Cindy barked and walked away.
‘I don’t understand you’ Moyo was speechless.
She decided to find her elusive and secretive roommate, as she neared the kitchen, she heard whisperers, whoever was in there was discussing something that was very secret and she placed her ears against the door, ready to eavesdrop.
‘Can you start all over again? Because I don’t understand and this is so unbelievable’ Shantal was shocked by Linda or Adaeze’s revelation.
‘I know it’s hard to believe, but that’s what really happened’ Linda felt better talking to Shantal about what Larkin did to her.
‘It’s just like a movie, how could Larkin be that cruel? You were just fifteen!’ Shantal gasped in horror.
‘Yes I was, my dad and I had returned to Nigeria after my mother’s death, so we spent like a week in a hotel. My dad had drinking problems, so I guess it was one of those nights when he got drunk that he met the man we call Larkin, ‘Larkin’ is actually my father’s name.
My dad came home that night crying soberly, I was afraid for him, I didn’t understand the source of his grief because we had already mourned my late mother, whom I had never set my eyes on; I had only spoke on phone and exchanged pictures with her. Later that night Larkin came into our hotel room with Abu who was very young then and some ruffians, they shot my father and took me away’ Linda paused as tears welled up in her eyes.
‘So, your name isn’t Linda, you’re Adaeze, how come your half brother hasn’t recognized that the Adaeze with him is an impostor’ Shantal wondered.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm you are reading
‘Seriously, I don’t know, I don’t know how Larkin pulled that off. He’s only keeping me alive for the final handover of my half brother’s inheritance, after then, he may kill me’ Linda cried.
‘It’s alright darling, I promise to stand with you, no matter what happens’ Shantal assured her.
‘So what do we do next’? Linda asked
‘We take our time, gather more people to this cause, then we all turn against Larkin, his most loyal man is Abu, if we can get to him, then all is done’ Shantal said.
‘Should I tell Moyo about this? She’s the one that actually gave me the courage’ Linda asked
‘I think you should’ Shantal replied.
