Her name was Akosua Bosomba, and she was from the town of Wowo.
I guess those two things should have put me off and made me steer clear of her: Bosomba and Wowo.
‘Bosom’ loosely meant ‘evil god’ in the Akan language, and ‘Ba’ meant ‘child’.
Basically her surname Bosomba meant ‘child of an evil god.’
And Wowo…
Darn it, what in the name of Hades was Wowo? How could a town be known as Wowo?
I hadn’t even heard it till the day she mentioned it to me.
“I come from Wowo!” she had said.
That should have made me flee, because the name of that town was weird, to say the least.
But I didn’t flee…
Not because she was unbelievably sexy and beautiful with a body that was made in Heaven, no!
I didn’t flee simply because of the fact that adding ‘AKOS OF WOWO’ to the DIAL List sounded nice to me…oh, yeah!
But then again some things did sound funny and nice until they became serious.
The circumstances under which I met her were bizarre, and that also should have given me a warning signal.
Especially what happened to the driver of the Picanto car that almost knocked her down…
But it didn’t.
What happened to the Picanto driver? I would come to that presently.
It had been drizzling that day, and I was on my way back to the office after a business luncheon with some Chinese partners. I was in my car, rocking to some loud Lovers’ Rock reggae when I came to an intersection.
The traffic lights were blinking only amber, a clear indication that there was some fault with the light system, and so two policemen were directing traffic. One of them, a man, stopped the lane I was driving in, just as I was about to move, and so I stopped.
Traffic was flowing from the other direction now, and about a couple of minutes later the other police personnel, a woman, raised her hand to stop the cars from that direction so that it would be our turn to move.
It was a three-lane street, and so the car on the inner lane stopped, and then another car stopped in the middle lane. There was a car approaching from far off in the outer lane, and so the policewoman went to the outer lane and raised her hand to stop the car.
Pedestrians began to cross the road in front of the stopped cars…and that was when I saw Akosua Bosomba of Wowo for the first time.
She was wearing a brown khaki uniform; the type some nurses wore. She was crossing the road, and she was so stunning that I fixed my gaze on her and whistled silently.
She was not tall, and neither was she short. That girl wasn’t big, and she wasn’t skinny either. Now that should have summed up a pretty nondescript appearance, but no, this girl was a mega-bomb. She was curved out like the goddess of love, and her face was chiselled by a master craftsman.
She was not only fair, but she glowed!
A perfect stranger, but she slammed into my heart and remained there! My mind worked furiously as I sought out ways to get her attention, even for a second.
I wound down my window and reached for one of my complimentary cards.
And that was when it happened!
The car in the outer lane kept on coming!
The policewoman’s hand was raised, indicating that the car should stop, but it didn’t! Maybe the driver was thinking of something else, or he was tired, or he was half-asleep…it might have been a myriad of reasons, but cutting line was, he kept gunning that accelerator!
The beautiful girl was now past the policewoman, and she was crossing the outer lane. She had earphones in her ears, and so she probably didn’t see that car hurtling toward them in time!
The policewoman, now aware that the driver didn’t mean to stop, began running out of the outer lane for her dear life!
The beautiful girl saw the danger she was in, and she took to her heels with sudden fright!
That was when the driver of the car – which I now saw was a Picanto – saw the grave danger he was causing! Out of desperation he swung the wheel, and now the car was hurtling dangerously out of control, and bearing down on the running girl!
People were screaming, and my heart was thudding with sudden fear!
The girl cut to the side of the road, and the car veered in the same direction, and suddenly the girl just collapsed on the ground, out of sheer fright!
The Picanto would have ran over her and mashed her up, but suddenly it came up against a pillar in the pavement with nasty shearing sound, and the car came to a halt.
I jumped out of my car and raced to the unconscious girl’s side! The door of the Picanto opened, and the driver stepped out. He also approached the girl and knelt beside us, and then quite suddenly he also keeled over to the right and fell down motionless.
At the time I thought he was suffering with shock.
I picked up the inert girl and raced to my car, putting her in the back.
Some drivers also picked up the Picanto driver and put him in the back seat of a pick-up truck that had drawn up.
There was a hospital nearby, and we drove straight to the hospital.
I stayed, fidgeting, until I was told that she was up.
I went to the ward where she was lying, and as I entered the nurses smiled.
“This is the young man that brought you, Akos,” an elderly nurse said.
She smiled at me sweetly.
She was still dazed, but the way she was lying down, with those incredible legs slanted, those thighs outlined by her uniform…the sweet angle of her hips, the glowing tops of her breasts, those delectable lips…
I felt a twinge in my groin…and I knew I was furiously erect!
I thrust my hands into my pockets to hide my erection as I sat down on the chair the nurses had pulled up for me.
“Hello,” I whispered, not trusting the passion in my voice.
“Hi,” she whispered and smiled again. “Thank you very much.”
“Oh, that’s okay, really,” I said with my most charming smile. “I’m Yao Biko, by the way. Heard them calling you Akos.”
“Yes, Mr. Biko.”
“Oh, call me Yao,” I said with another smile.
She smiled sweetly back at me.
“Yes, Yao,” she murmured. “I am Akos.”
“I see,” I said. “An Ashanti?”
She shook her head.
“No,” she said. “Krobo. I come from Wowo!”
I giggled myself silly; just couldn’t help myself, and she laughed too.
“Wo what?” I asked.
“Wo,” she replied, and then we both burst into laughter. “I get that a lot, though.”
We chatted for a while, and then I scowled.
There was a golden chain around her neck, and I saw that there was an angry red tinge around her neck and upper chest, just below her neck. It was as if the chain had outlined itself into her skin.
“Oh,” I said. “That chain, seems it burned your skin. Was it because you fell?”
She gasped and sat up suddenly, her face horrified, grasping her chain.
“Oh, no!” she whispered, her face filled with terror. “Oh, no!”
Her behaviour alarmed me, and I stood up and held her shoulder.
“What’s it, are you okay?” I asked, genuinely concerned. “Should I call one of the nurses?”
She was still looking at me with horror.
“The burn of the chain!” she asked, horrified. “Is it very red, or just a faint outline?”
It was very red, of course, but I didn’t want to alarm her because it seemed to be giving her the freaks, and so I lied.
“Oh, it’s just a thin line, almost indiscernible.”
She breathed and gave a smile sigh.
“Oh, I’m glad,” she whispered and fell back on the bed. “It’s my father’s chain. He’s a fetish priest. He gave it to me for protection. It protects me from evil. If it had burnt me badly and left a red mark then something bad would’ve happened to the driver that almost knocked me down with his car.”
I smiled.
I didn’t believe in stuff like that anyway.
Later, as the nurses came to prepare her for discharge, and I went out to pay for her bill at the hospital, I met one of the men who had brought the Pincanto driver in the pick-up.
“Oh, sir!” he said hurriedly. “How’s the poor girl doing? We brought the driver.”
“Oh, she’s okay now,” I said. “She’s going to be discharged.”
“Oh, that’s a relief,” he said and turned away. “The driver didn’t make it. Maybe he had hypertension or something.”
“What?” I asked with narrowed eyes.
“The Picanto driver that almost hit the girl, yes, he’s dead! They pronounced him dead on arrival!” he said, and hurried on.
I stood frozen…
I remembered what the girl had said about that darn chain!
That was when I should have paid the bill and left Akos of Wowo alone!
If her name didn’t freak me out, and the name of her town didn’t convince me to leave her alone, the fact that she told me about the chain and about her father being a fetish priest should definitely have convinced me…
But no, my urge to make her number forty-five on the DIAL list made me brush aside the death of the Picanto driver as just an accident, coincidental! Maybe he had been hypertensive, and the excitement had blown his heart…
Yes, Akos from Wowo was in my blood…
How I wish I had made the decision to walk away that afternoon when I heard the news of the Picanto driver’s demise!
Oh, how I wish I had walked away from Akos of Wowo!
