Chapter 5

If it wasn't for the fact that I was sitting on a chair, I'm sure my legs would have failed me. "Sa.. Samuel? Is that really you?"I said as I stood up ~and got closer to him. I just couldn't believe it. "Cynthia, it's me. I've been looking for you ever since I got back." Wait, if he wasn't dead, that means he abandoned us. I thought.

And he had the nerve to look for me? Yeah right. He tried to hug me but then I took a step back. I was hurt. "How could you do this to us? You made us believe you were dead while you weren't! All for what?"

"Cynthia please let me explain." He interrupted me. I was too angry to utter any other word. I wasn't the type who could argue. "When I arrived in USA" ,he began as I watched him intently with anger. "I realized that black people without official documents didn't have it easy at all. A friend I met there advised me to marry a white *woman as soon as possible. I met a woman in her early 50s who was interested in me and immediately tied the knot. I didn't love her Cynthia ~. I only did* that to secure a better future for our little family. Little did I know what the woman had in store for me when she found out I was married. She told me she'd kill me if I ever thought of leaving her. And she wanted me for herself so she called the most dialed number and told whoever picked that I had died and from there, she controlled my every move. She died a year ago from breast cancer. Apparently, she found out about it at it's last stage. I was able to free myself and come to Ghana only when she died. I'm so sorry for everything." Everything started to make sense.

The white woman who called, his sudden appearance and everything. I didn't know what to say. It wasn't really his fault. I sighed. "Would you like to see Alex?" I asked him after some minutes of silence. "Of course ". He replied happily.
