THE BILLIONAIRE'S WIFE 3

Ada looked at her mother skeptically as she await her answer. She didn’t know what she expected from her mother but certainly not this reaction. Her mother jumped up with joy and started dancing.

“Nne, I thought you wouls object,” she said as she looked at her mother in wonderment.

Ada’s mother stopped dancing and looked at her daughter in bewilderment. “Object? See my daughter, I have been praying for this opportunity for a very longtime. Chief Eze is the best son in law a mother would pray for. Poverty is not soup that one takes delight to lick. I am tired of managing. I want to go back to the life of affluence that I was used to. Please my daughter, marry Chief and bring us out of this present hell that we are now,” she told her daughter beseechingly.

"Mum but he is old enough to be my fathe?."

"My daughter, age is nothing but a number. Is it those chewing boys with thin legs you want to get married to?". She asked mockingly.

"Those ones that a good future with them is not guaranteed. On top of it, they will cheat on you and manipulate you like a manniquine. Biko Ada, chief is God sent. His future is certain, with him, we can never go hungry, we are sure of a better life. Abeg o don't fall my hand, marry chief if you want to make me happy. I ask for nothing else but this from you, " her mother told her as she pleaded passionately.

" Mama, I can't see sweet and go and choose bitter leaf. The few times I have spent with him, I have known the other side of life. Mama, life is sweet if you have money to spend. I will marry chief, our family needs the liberation. Bye bye to poverty," she gestured wildly.

"You said something about the few times you spent with him, did he sleep with you?". She looked at her daughter with raised eyebrow.

"Nooo Mama," she said with emphasis. "It hasn't come to that o. We are still friends."

"My daughter, please if he ask you, don't hesitate to give it to him. There are many girls out there that will do anything to have a man like Chief. My daughter, make hay while the sun shines, don't let them take this gold mine from us." She pleaded.

"Okay mama, I promise to do all you ask of me."

Ada promised her mother that she would do exactly what she said. She didn’t need to brood over the issue. All she wanted was for her family to be comfortable and now that God has brought Chief their way, she was ready to sacrifice all to give her family the best.

Her decision was yes to his proposal. She is now his to do as he likes.

On Monday at the office, Ada gave Chief her answer; it was a yes. Chief was happy and he took her shopping. He took her to the best boutique in town and asked her to choose whatever she wants. Ada was not too crazy about fashion and she picked some few things for herself, her mother and her siblings. Afterwards, Chief went to her house to know her mother and siblings. He gave them lots of money to buy the things they need; everyone was happy.

No one commented on the age difference between Ada and Chief. They saw Chief as a blessing to the family and he spoil them silly with money. Things changed automatically for Ada and her family members. They have enough money to spend and do as they like all thanks to Chief’s generosity.

Chief stopped Ada from working with him and she had to stay back at home as they prepare for her marriage to Chief. Ada’s elder brother who has just gotten admission into the university had all his bills paid by Chief and he went to school with enough money to spend. Chief also gave Emeka a car to use on campus. Emeka became one of the big boys on campus all thanks to Chief Eze.

The Okekes’ became the envy of their neighbors. They left their old neighborhood for the new posh neighborhood that Chief bought a duplex apartment for them.

Chief bought a car for Ada and changed her wardrobe to suit his statue. He bought her lots of expensive clothes, jewelries and all the things she needed as a lady. Before she became his wife, he took her to London and America to spend his vacation with him. Ada had a really splendid time in those places and she blessed the day she came across Chief. He was generous, so loving and caring and she couldn’t help but fall in love with him again and again.

Friends and relatives who has deserted them in the past suddenly started coming around them. It amused Ada that the same people that avoided them and deserted them when there was nothing were the same people that were coming to them as if their lives depended on it.

Chief got to know Ada’s father’s relatives and a date was fixed for the marriage ceremony. On the day of their introduction, it was as if they were doing traditional marriage. There were lots of food to eat and drink and Chief has a gift for every one that attended. Every one praised Ada for her choice of husband. Ada’s mother was proud of her daughter’s achievement and she held her head high among her peers.

After the introduction, they prepared for the marriage ceremony; it was going to be a traditional marriage. For the marriage ceremony, every of Ada’s relatives were given money to buy their clothes and the things they needed for the ceremony. Chief was too generous to a fault. The Okekes’ almost became a semi god to their friends and relatives. They sang praises of them and were always coming around them in pretense that they wanted to help them out with the marriage ceremony.

Among their friends, there was a man that was not comfortable with the way Chief was lavishing money as if it grew on trees. Mr. James was an old friend of Mr. Okeke and he was the only one that has stood by them when things were tough.

Though he wasn’t rich but he always comes around to visit and from the little he has, he gave them something. He came to see Mrs.Okeke and he asked her to investigate Chief Eze very well before Ada gets married to him. He told them that If Chief Eze got his money through a genuine source, he wouldn’t be throwing it around the way he was doing. He was spending money as if it grew on tree. He asked Mrs. Okeke not to be blinded by Chief’s money and to try to make investigation before giving her daughter to him to marry.

Emeka, Ada’s elder brother was around when Mr. James called and he heard all what he said to his mother. Emeka was furious and he accused Mr. James of being jealous of their new statue as Chief’s in-laws. He told Mr. James that he wanted them to always come to him to beg for food but God has spoilt his plans by bringing Chief Eze their way. He said that Mr. James is evil and should be the one to be investigated and not Chief Eze.

Mr. James was shocked by Emeka’s accusations and was even more shocked when Mrs. Okeke supported her son. She howled at him and called him enemy of progress.

"For this that you have come to tell us today, may nothing good be your portion. May you never reap the fruit of your labour. May you die in penury...

Ada's mother was shaking with fury as she rained curses on Mr James. He didn't expect this from the people he has helped so much. He was too shock to say anything. He was more shocked when Emeka.....

The story continues....
