Ada quickly left the room and the maid followed suit. She took another route from the back door out of the house and ran to the main gate. The gate was locked, the gateman refused to open it for her. He told her that Chief has instructed him not to open the gate for anyone. Ada tried to use authority on him but the gateman remained adamant. He insisted chief asked him not to allow anyone to go out. Ada started begging him but the gateman stood his ground.
Chief called out to the gateman not to open the gate. He was advancing angrily towards them and three of his body guards were right behind him. The angry look on Chief's face terrified Ada. If look can kill, she would have drop dead with the look chief gave her.
It happened all in a flash. Ada didn't know what possessed her. She kicked the gateman on his groin. He screamed out in pains and release his grip on the gate. As quickly as lightening, Ada opened the gate and ran out of the compound.
"Catch her, catch her ," chief commanded his bodyguards.
Ada ran with all the strength in her. She was screaming for help at the top of her voice as she ran. The bodyguards were hot on her heel in pursue .
Suddenly, someone held her from behind. Ada screamed and fell on the floor. The last thing she remembered was that she was enveloped in darkness. Ada was dead to the world and oblivious to what was happening around her.
When Ada woke up, she was surrounded by her mother and relatives who were very worried. She wondered how she came to be in the village and not in chief’s house in the city. Someone was kneeling beside her and praying for her.
Ada recalled everything that occurred back in the city and she told the people around her all what she saw. She was curious to know how she came to be in the village and she asked her mother. Her mother was about to tell her when she passed out again.
Ada came out of coma some days later and to the horror of everyone, she has lost her sanity.
She was taken to different prayer houses and prayed for but she didn’t recover. She became a mad woman, acting strange, lost to the world and was in a world of her owe.
Chief didn’t come to look for her. People advised her mother not to go and look for him for he is a dangerous man and might harm her.
Ada’s condition became critical and her family members were all in a dilemma. They practically sold all they have to raise money and seek for solution to Ada’s problem. They have done all they can but Ada didn't get better.
Some people sympathized with them while some mocked them and said it serves them right. People said it was their greed for money that led them to such calamity. The Okekes’ family was abandoned by the same people that flocked around them to ask for one favor or another. The Okekes became laughing stock in the village due to Ada’s condition.
Emeka, Ada’s elder brother eventually went to confront Chief Eze. He created a scene at the front of chief’s office and he told all that cares to listen all what Ada told them about chief. He threatened to kill chief if he didn't make his sister well again. Chief got Emeka arrested by the police and was he put behind bars.
When Mr James heard about it, he went about to get Emeka released. It took him weeks before he could get Emeka released on bail; it was by God’s divine intervention.
Emeka was ashamed of what he did to him in the past and he was practically crying as he begged Mr James to forgive him. Mr James said he has forgiven him. All he wanted was the good of his late friend's family. He promised to do all he can in his power to make Ada well again.
On his way back to the village, Emeka had a fatal accident and didn't survive it. When Mrs Okeke was informed about Emeka's death, she.....
