##### EPISODE 1###### Cadmus wandered all over the world and became an exile, keeping away frm his own country where his father's anger would await him. finally he visited the oracle of Phoebus and asked if there was any land in which he could settle down. phoebus gave him this reply 'In a desert place you will meet a cow, one that has neva had a yoke on her neck or drawn a hooked plough. follow her as she goes and in the place where she first lies down on the grass, there u must found ur city, and must call the place Boeotia, or Cow-land.' Almost as soon as Cadmus had come down from the cave where the oracle was, he saw a young cow, with no one lookin after her, walking slowly along, and with no mark on her to show that she had ever been used for ploughing or belonged to anybody. He walked carefully on after her, and, as he went, he silently gave thanks to phoebus for his guidance. The cow went across the fords of river Cephisus and through the fields of Panope. Then she stood still and, lifting up her head, which was very beautiful with it's long horns, she filled the air all around with her lowings. Then she gave a look back at Cadmus and his men who were following her , and sank dwn on the ground, letting her flanks rest in the cool grass. Cadmus gave tnks to the gods, kissed this foreign earth and greeted the mountains and fields that he had never seen before..... T.B.C

###EPISODE 2### the next thing was to make a sacrifice to Jupiter, and Cadmus ordered his men to go and find a spring of living water for for the libations. there was an ancient forest near by which had never been touched by the axe, and in the middle of it was a cave all overgrown with bushes and bending twigs. stones fitted together there formed a low arch out of which welled a stream of water,and, hidden inside the cave, was a serpent sacred to Mars with a wonderful golden crest. it's eyes sparkled with fire and all it's body was swollen with poison. it had three tongues which flickered out and three rows of teeth. As soon as Cadmus's men came, unluckily for them, this wood, they let down their bucket with a splash into the water, and immediately, out of the depths of the cave the blue serpent stretched out it's head and made a terrible hissing. ###EPISODE 2### The bucket dropped from their hands, the blood left their bodies and a sudden trembling came over their limbs. as for the serpent, it gathered itself up with it's scaly coils into rolling circles; with a quick movement it arched itself up and, with more than half of it's body upright in the air, it looked right down on the trees. it was as big, if you could have seen the whole of it, as the constellation in the sky which is called the serpent, and is placed between the Great Bear and the Little Bear. without a second's delay it seized upon Cadmus's men, and it made no difference whether they were getting their swords ready to fight or were thinking of running away or were too terrified to do either. some of them it killed with it's teeth, some by crushing them in it's long coils, some by it's deadly poisonous breath. By the time that the Sun had reached it's full height and the shadows were at their smallest, Cadmus began to wonder why his men where being so long, and he set out to look for them. he carried a lion-skin shield, and his weapons were a shinning iron-pointed spear and a javelin. his own stout heart was worth more than any weapon. When he entered the wood he saw the dead bodies and, sprawling over them in triumph, the huge body of their destroyer, who now with its bloody tongue was licking their grim wounds. 'my faithful friends, ' Cadmus said, I shall either avenge ur death or share in it... T.B.C

###EPISODE 3### As Cadmus spoke he lifted up his right hand a great stone. it was a huge stone and he threw it with a huge effort but, though high walls with their towers would have been knocked down by its force, the serpent remained without a would. it's scales, like a breastplate, and its hard dark skin protected it against the blow. however, the skin was not too hard for Cadmus's javelin, which fixed firmly and stuck in the middle of the serpent's cooking muscular back, with the iron head going right down into the flesh. Infuriated with pain, the animal twisted it's head back, examined its wounds, and bit at the shaft of the javelin that was stuck in it. Tugging violently at it, it managed, when it had loosened it all round, to tear it out; but the point was still stuck in its backbone. now indeed it had reason to be more savage than ever before. Great veins swelled up on its throat; a white foam shone round its grisly open jaws; its scales made a terrible rustling sound on earth; a black breath, like that which comes from the mouth of Styx, made the air filthy and tainted. At one moment it coiled itself up into huge folds; the next moment it shot up into the air erect and high as a tree; then it surged forward in a huge wave, like a flooded river, battering down with its breast the tree that stood in its part. Cadmus retreated a little, holding his lionskin shield in front of him, and jabbing with his spear point at the open jaws that were always threatening him. The beast became all the more enraged, as it bit uselessly on the hard iron, fixing its tee into the point of the spear. soon blood began to fall from the poisonous roof of its mouth and to stain the green grass around. but the wound was not a serious one, because the serpent kept backing away and withdrawing its wounded neck, and so never gave Cadmus a chance to thrust his blow home. finally, however, he fixed the spear firmly in the beast's throat and pressed on hard till he had driven it back against an oak-tree. there the spear went right through both the neck and the tree. The tree bent down beneath its weight and the trunk groaned as, in its death agony, the serpent lashed it wit its tail. T.B.C ****

##EPISODE 4 . . Then while Cadmus was standing looking at the enormous size of his defeated enemy, he suddenly heard a voice. He had no idea where it came from, but he heard it sayin: 'Son of Agenor, why are you looking at this dead serpent? A time will come when you will be turned into a serpent, and people will be looking at you.' On hearing these words he stood in terror for some time, with pale face and uneasy mind. cold fear made his hair stand on end. Then suddenly Pallas, his patron goddess, appeared, gliding down to him through the upper air. She told him to plough up the land and sow the dragon's teeth in it, and they would grow up to be his people. He obeyed her, as he ploughed into the earth, he took the teeth, which were to be the seeds of men, as he had been told, and scattered them. Then, incredible as it may seem, the edges of the furrows began to show signs of movement. first there sprang up out of the ground the points of Spears, then helmets with bright coloured nodding crest. Then above the surface there began to show shoulders and breasts an arms heavy with their weapons. So out of the earth came a whole crop of warriors with their shields. Cadmus was terrified at finding that he had new enemies to deal with, and he was beginning to take up his arms when one of the earth-born people cried out to him: 'Leave your arms alone! this is a war amongst ourselves. Do not join in it. ' He then struck down with his stout sword, fighting hand to hand, one of his earth-born brothers, and was himself struck down by a javelin thrown at him from long range. yet the man who killed him lived no longer himself, immediately giving up the life which he had only just received. In the same way the whole crowd fought bitterly, each man killing his neighbour, brothers only for a very short time. Soon all this young men men, whose life had been so short, were dying in agony on their mother earth, all warm with their blood. Only five were left. one of these was called Echion, and the command of Pallas, he threw down his weapons and proposed peace to his brothers. The fighting was over and Cadmus had these five men for his companions in founding the city which the Oracle of Phoebus had promised him. TBC

Abeg make una no vex ooo ###EPISODE 5 One might have thought now that Cadmus was really happy. His city of Thebes was built. He was given the daughter of Venus and Mars, Harmonia, to be his wife. He had four daughters who are called Ino, Agave, Autonoe and Semele. they in turn had children who began to grow up to be men and women. So one would certainly have expected Cadmus and Harmonia to be happy. however, one should always wait for the end, and no one can be called happy until he is dead and buried. The first reason for the sadness that came on Cadmus and Harmonia in the midst of all this good fortune was the fate of their grandson Actaeon, the son of Autonoe. Deer's hotmail grew on his head and his own hounds drank up their master's blood. And if you think about the story you will see that this was just because of bad luck, not because he did anything wrong in just making a mistake. Actaeon had been hunting on a mountain, and all the ground was stained with the blood of the wild animals which he had killed. it was mid day and the sun stood high up in the sky, making all the shadows short. Young Actaeon with gentle words called to his hunting companions as they strayed through the bushes and thickets 'my friends, all our nets and Spears are wet with blood. we have done well enough today. when tomorrow's dawn brings back the light in her shining chariot, then we will start our hunting again. Now phoebus is half way across the sky and his rays seem to split the ground. let us rest now and take up our knotted nets.' His companions did as they were told and gave up their work. There was a valley in this forest, all overgrown with pine trees and sharp pointed cypresses. it was called Gargaphie and was sacred to the huntress goddess Diana. ***T.B.C ***

##EPISODE 6 At the far end of the valley there was a shady cave, not specially constructed but made by nature to look as though it was work of art; for there was a natural arch there made out of the original rock. From one side came the noise of a shining fountain which bubbled up from the ground and formed a pool with grassy banks. And in this pool Diana, when she was tired from hunting, used to bathe her virgin limbs in the bright water. This day too, she had come there. to the nymph who acted as her armour bearer she gave her javelin, her quiver and her unstrung bow to hold. Another nymph held over her arm the dress which the goddess took off. Two others removed her sandals. Another, with her own hair streaming behind her, tied in a knot the hair that fell over the goddess's shoulders, and other nymphs fetched water in their we're for the goddess's bath. At this moment just when Diana was bathing in her usual pool, Cadmus's grandson (Actaeon), having stopped hunting for the day, came wandering with no special purpose through the unknown Woods and arrived at Diana's sacred grove. it was fate that brought him there. As soon as he peered into the cave, all shining with the fountain spray, the naked unclad nymphs seeing a man, beat their breasts and filled the grove with their startled cries. they crowded round Diana and tried to shield her with their own bodies, but the goddess was taller than any of them and stood out head and shoulders above the rest. ***TBC
