Chapter 1
Sophia:
I opened the door to my apartment
and gazed inside. It seemed as if there
was a never ending darkness. I
stepped inside and shut the door,
locking it behind me. I jumped when I
heard someone approaching me. I
knelt down and gave my dog a huge
hug.
“Hey Naomi, you miss me?” I said.
She licked my face, and I took it as a
yes. I stood back up and set my bag
and keys on the counter. I turned on
the bright kitchen light and walked over
to the pantry. I took out the heavy bag
of dog food and filled Naomi’s bowl,
then replaced her other bowl with fresh
water.
After she started eating, I grabbed my
bag and went upstairs to my room. I
opened the door and walked over to
my bed. I dumped my bag on my bed
and took off my boots. I was
exhausted. Working seven hours at a
bar each night gets tiring- especially
when you’re a waitress. I always have
to deal with drunks hitting on me,
thinking they’d actually have a chance.
Ha.
I looked over at my bedside table and
stared at pictures of Justin and me.
God, I missed him. He’s in London for
two years for school. He’d only been
gone five months, but it’s felt like ten
years.
I walked into my bathroom and turned
on the shower. I smelled like musty
alcohol, and I desperately needed a
shower. I stripped out of my white
shirt and black shorts and stepped into
the hot, steamy water. I washed my
hair and body, and once I was satisfied
I smelled good, I got out. I walked out
of the bathroom and found Naomi
lying on my bed, chewing on her bone.
I got dressed in my pink tank top and
flannel shorts then sat on the bed
beside her. I looked at the clock and
was surprised to see it was almost
four in the morning.
“Well, looks like I’m going to have to
pull an all night study session, Naomi.
Are you up to it?” I asked her, stroking
her soft, gentle fur. She looked up
from her bone and barked in reply.
“Okay, let’s do this.”
I opened my bag and pulled out my
college algebra textbook and notebook.
I put them on the other side of the bed
and pulled out my English and biology
textbooks. I set them next to my
algebra book and stood up. I’m going
to need some coffee if I’m going to get
all of this done.
I walked down stairs to the kitchen and
turned on the coffee maker. I got down
my huge coffee cup then waited for
the coffee to be made. When the coffee
maker dinged, I poured the hot, black
liquid into my cup. I ran back upstairs,
coffee in hand. I was ready to study.
After an hour of studying and taking
notes, I jumped and almost spilled my
coffee when the doorbell rang. Naomi
picked her head up and silently
growled.
“Down girl,” I said, patting her back. I
stood up and motioned her to follow
me. “Come on.”
We both walked down the stairs and
quietly tip toed to the front door. I
looked through the peep hole and
didn’t see anyone. Naomi growled
beside me, warning me of possible
danger.
“It’s okay, it’s probably just some
stupid prank,” I said, unlocking the
door. I opened it and poked my head
out, looking down the walk way. It was
deadly silent. The lights on the
concrete ceiling were flickering on and
off, and there was a cool breeze
blowing. The air smelled of old pine
wood. I looked out over the metal
railing and gazed at the fountain in the
court yard. The moon light was
reflecting off the dribbling water,
making it shine silver. I shivered, trying
to shake that feeling of being watched
again.
I was about to pull my head back
inside, but something on the cold
ground caught my eye. I fumbled for
the light switch next to the door to turn
on the outside light and looked down
to see what it was. I gasped and stood
there, frozen.
A single red rose was lying on the
welcome mat to my house. There was
a red satin ribbon tied around it. No…
this couldn’t be happening. Is this
some sick joke? Ricky was dead. He
was never coming back.
I pulled my head back inside and
slammed the door. I locked it and
turned off the outside light. Putting my
back to the door, I slid down to the
ground, comforted by Naomi. I glanced
at her scar that Ricky had given to her.
It was over a year ago, but the mark
would always be there.
I remember stabbing him, listening to
him whisper his last few words after
he fell to the floor.
“I love you, Sophie…” he said. I didn’t
think I would ever get the image out of
my head. I watched them carry his
body out of my room. Was he really
not dead? No, he’s dead. He has to be
dead. There’s no possible way he
could have survived.
I shook my head and stood up. I need
to stop doubting myself, or I’ll really
believe he’s back. I walked back up to
my room and returned to studying.

CHAPTER 2 SOPHIE “Let’s go for a walk,” I said, hooking the leash onto her collar. I grabbed the coffee cup from last night and walked down stairs with Naomi. I glanced around at the living room. The beige sofa was against the wall, across from the plasma screen sitting on the black T.V. stand. I looked at the pictures on the wall of Justin and me, my family, Naomi, and our friends. I saw one of Zoey, and stared at it for a long time. God, I missed her almost as much as I missed Justin. I remember her saying she wanted to go to Australia for school with her boyfriend Jeremy. I watched her getting on the plane a year ago, and I haven’t seen her since. All I’ve seen were pictures she’s sent me. She seemed happy, so I was happy for her. I put the coffee cup in the sink and walked over to the door. Unlocking and opening it, Naomi and I walked outside into the bright sunshine. The air outside was cold and breezy. I locked the door behind me and led Naomi down the concrete hallway and down the two flights of stairs. We walked through the courtyard, and I saw the apartment building’s manager, Ms. Hattie, watering some flowers. I waved to her and continued to walk out to the sidewalk. “You want to go to Starbucks, Naomi?” I asked her. She looked up at me and wagged her tail. “I’ll take that as a yes.” Scott, the manager of Starbucks, knew me and Naomi. He would always give me discounts on coffee, and always knew what I wanted. At first, I thought he had a bit of a crush on me. Later did I find out, he was married and had two kids. I’d babysat them a few times, and met his wife, Debbie. She was beautiful, and they made a perfect couple. When we finally got to Starbucks, I went in with Naomi and was instantly greeted by one of the workers, Hannah. She was still in high school, and we’d talked a few times before. She’d memorized what I got each time, like Scott did. “Hey Sophie, hey Naomi,” she said, smiling. She was cleaning a coffee machine and trying to get a costumer their coffee at the same time. “Hey Hannah. Is Scott here today?” I asked, approaching the counter. “Yeah, he’s in the back,” she told me, handing the costumer his coffee. “Scott, Sophie is here!” A few seconds later, the kitchen door swung open. Scott came walking out of the kitchen and went around the counter to come and hug me. “Hey Sophie!” “Hi Scott,” I said, returning his hug. Scott noticed Naomi and reached down to pet her. She returned the greeting with a lick to his cheek. Scott stood back up and looked at me. “I haven’t seen you here in a while, Soph. How’s school going?” he asked, walking back behind the counter. “School is going really good, actually. I’m keeping up with the rent and bills and such. I don’t have classes for another few hours, so I thought I’d stop in and say hi,” I said, looking over the glass desert display. “That’s always good. You want your regular?” he asked me. When I reached into my bag for my wallet, he stopped me and added, “It’s on the house.” I smiled up at him. “Sure.” He got my vanilla latte and handed it to me over the counter. “Thanks, Scott,” I said, sipping the coffee. “Anytime,” he replied. “So, how’s your mom?” I smiled and looked at him. He gave me a questioning look and asked, “What?” I laughed softly then whispered, “She’s pregnant.” His smiled and continued to wipe off the counter. “Tell her I said congratulations!” “Will do, Scott,” I said, glancing at my watch. “Hey, I actually have to go. Classes are starting soon and I need to run a few errands before I get to school. Thanks for the coffee,” I added. “Anytime, Soph! Come back and see us soon, okay? Jenna and Tommy want to see you again,” he told me. Jenna and Tommy were his two kids. They were still in elementary school and they seemed to adore Naomi and me. I smiled at him. “Alright, Scott. Bye!” “Bye, Sophie,” he said as I walked out the door. I walked out into the bright sunshine, shivering as the cold breeze blew through the air. Walking down the sidewalk, I sipped my coffee and looked around the street. There were joggers and dog walkers, people opening up shops, and some other people getting on a bus. I glanced up at the sky, watching the clouds hide the bright sun. Passing a bookshop, I looked over into the window and gazed at the books on display. I looked closer when I saw a familiar reflection in the window. When I realized who I saw, I almost dropped my coffee. I whipped around and looked around frantically. Naomi, who was by my side, looked up at me and started whimpering. When I didn’t see him, I pat Naomi on her head and hastily walked down the sidewalk to my apartment complex. I didn’t see him. I know I didn’t see him. It’s all in my head. He’s dead, Sophie, he’s dead. I continued to repeat that over and over in my head until Naomi and I were safely inside my apartment. Sighing, I locked the door, then unhooked the leash from Naomi’s collar. Looking at the clock, I realized I only had an hour left to get to my classes. I finished my coffee then ran upstairs to grab my bag. When I came back downstairs, Naomi was lounged out on the couch. “I’ll see you tonight, Naomi. Bye,” I said, patting her head. I grabbed my keys and walked out the door. --------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------

Chapter 3 Ricky: I watched her walk out of the coffee shop. A To Go coffee cup was in her hands, and she would drink out of it every minute or so. She walked along her German shepherd, Naomi. I noticed the long scar along her side. It was fully healed, but there would always be a bright pink mark down the side of her. God, I had missed her. I hadn’t seen her in almost a year. But I finally tracked her down and found out where she lived, where she went to school, where she worked… It was nice to have control again. I wondered if she’d forgotten about me over the course of a year. No, of course she hadn’t. She loves me, just like I love her. My fingers felt over the scar on my abdomen. The scar she had given me over a year ago. I learned to forgive her. Forgiveness was a big step when you wanted to trust someone again. I followed her on the opposite side of the street, watching her gaze at things she saw in the display windows as she passed shops. She’d stopped at one particular shop and gazed in the window. It was a used book shop. She gazed into it and I saw her face through the reflection of the window. She was beautiful as ever. She was growing out her dark brown hair, which was now down to the middle of her back. She looked closer into the window, and then got a horrified expression on her face. Then I realized she must’ve felt me watching her. I quickly ran into the nearest store I could, so she wouldn’t see me. That store just happened to be a flower shop. I inhaled the aroma of all the flowers around me. I was greeted by a kind old woman, who looked to be in her sixties. I smiled at her. “Good morning,” I said, taking glances back at Sophie. “Good morning, dear. Is there anything I could help you with?” she asked, smiling. I watched as Sophie looked around wildly, and then continued to walk down the sidewalk, turning a corner into her apartment complex. I looked back at the woman. “Yes. I was wondering if you had any jasmine flowers here,” I asked, casually walking up to the counter. “Yes, we do. Something for the special lady?” she asked, winking at me, chuckling softly. “Yes, actually. She loves jasmines. I’m hoping to surprise her,” I said, thinking of the perfect story to tell this old woman. “See, she doesn’t know I’m back in town, and I wanted to get her something nice.” She clapped her hands together once and smiled brightly at me. “Well, then she’s going to get a big surprise when she sees what you got for her. I have the perfect idea,” she said. She motioned me to follow her. “Come to the back with me.” I followed her to the back, only half listening to what she was going to do for me. I was mainly focused on Sophie. I was finally going to get to see her soon... to hold her in my arms. “Don’t you worry, Sophie,” I whispered to myself. “I’ll be with you soon.” --------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------

Chapter 4 Sophia: Parking my car into one of the few empty parking spots left, I gathered my textbooks and bag. I got out of the car and ran towards the school building, locking the doors behind me. When I opened the door to the building, I was greeted with a burst of cool air, making my hair fly back. I quickly walked down the hall, passing nearby students and teachers. I approached my classroom door and turned the knob, opening the door. When I entered the classroom, I gave a sigh of relief, thankful that class hadn’t started yet. I looked around for an empty seat and found one in the middle. Shuffling past the students, I finally made it to the seat and sat down. Looking around, I noticed everyone was quiet. Quieter than usual. I shrugged and unzipped my backpack, fishing out my history textbook. Setting it on my desk, I heard the doors swing open and footsteps walking into the classroom. I looked up to see Mr. Burner at the chalkboard, writing our assignments on the board. Sighing, I got out my notebook and pen, and began writing. Three hours later, the chimes rung for the classes to be dismissed. While I was packing up my books, I felt eyes burning into the back of my head. I zipped up my bag and turned around, looking up at the back seats. No one was there so I picked up my bag and walked out of the classroom. Walking out of the building, I instantly got the wave of Florida heat. I quickly walked over to my car, freezing as I caught a glimpse of something on the black, shiny hood. A bouquet of jasmine flowers were resting on the hood, with a lavender ribbon binding them together. I looked around for someone; anyone who could’ve put these here. Slowly walking towards the car, I reached out and picked up the flowers. “What the hell…” I whispered to myself, examining the flowers. Looking around again, I edged towards my car door. I opened it and slid inside, setting the flowers and my bag in the passenger seat. I started my car and drove out of the parking lot and onto the road. After a few minutes of driving down the road, I glanced at the flowers sitting on my bag. How weird is that? First it’s roses and now jasmines… Pulling into the bar where I work, I parked the car and hopped out, grabbing my bag. The flowers tumbled to the floor of the car, causing a few petals to break off. I ignored it and shut the door, locking it. When I entered the bar, things were quiet. Some of the workers were clearing off some of the dirty tables, Amy, one of the waitresses, was wiping down the bar, and a few families were eating at the empty, mahogany tables. Sam’s Bar is family friendly during the day, but at night we mostly get drunks. I envy Amy, who only worked during the day. Amy noticed me walking in and gave a sigh of relief. “Thank God! I thought you weren’t ever coming in, Sophie!” she said, reaching behind her back to take off her waist apron. She tossed it onto a bottom shelf behind her then came around the counter. “Yeah, sorry, classes ran a little late today,” I said, walking passed her. She flipped her strawberry blonde hair and followed me to the back. We passed the kitchen, waving hi to Monroe, the main cook, and turned the corner into Sam’s office. Sam was sitting at his desk, counting the money from last night. He heard us walking in and turned to look at us. “Hey, Sophie,” he said, smiling at me. He turned to Amy. “Going home now?” She nodded at him. “Yeah, I have to get home to Hillary,” she said. Hillary was Amy’s daughter. She got pregnant right out of high school, and is now a single mom. She brings Hillary into the bar sometimes, and Sam allows her to stay in the back. I walked up the steps to my door and fished my keys out of my bag. Unlocking the door, I opened it and pushed my way inside. “Naomi, I’m home!” I listened for her barking, or her paw steps rushing down the carpeted stairs. After a minute of silence, I called to her again. “Naomi?” I fumbled for the light switch and turned it on. The lights flickered to life revealing rose petals on the ground by my feet. “What the…” I trailed off, scanning the ground and seeing a trail of rose petals leading into the living room. I set my bag on the kitchen counter and cautiously followed the trail, getting more nervous every step I took. The trail led around the corner and up to the stairs. I called for Naomi again. “Naomi?” No answer. I felt shivers run up and down my spine. My heart was beating so fast I heard it in the silence. I walked up each step nervously. Making it to the top, I turned towards my door and placed my hand on the knob. The silver metal of the door was icy cold, sending shivers up my arm. Looking at the ground, I saw the shadows of the rose petals leading into my room. I turned the handle and pushed the door open slowly. Inside my room was pitch black, except for the moonlight shining in through the curtains. I noticed the outline of my bed, dresser, desk, and bookshelf. “Naomi?” No answer. I jumped and turned when I heard my lamp in the corner being turned on. My blood went icy and my knees almost buckled beneath me. No, it’s not possible. It couldn’t be possible. “No…” I whispered. I felt the tears well up in my eyes. “No…” Sitting in the chair on the far side of the room was the person who I could’ve sworn I killed a year ago. The person who terrorized me, stalked me, and even raped me. How was it possible? “Hello, Sophie. Oh, how I’ve missed you.” --------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------

Chapter 5 Sophia: I took a step back, trembling. “I killed you,” I whispered, tears falling down my cheeks. “You’re supposed to be dead…” He got up from the chair and took a few steps closer to me. “No, Sophie… I could never leave you alone,” he said, taking a step closer. All of the painful, terrorizing images came flooding back into my head. The painful sounds of my clothes ripping, the yelp of Naomi when the knife plunged into her fur, and the last words that were spoken to me by Ricky. I shook my head, trying to erase the images and noises that were all just a memory. But it wasn’t just a memory… It was all happening again. Tears rolled down my cheeks. “Where’s Naomi,” I demanded. He sighed, looking away from me. “Where is she?!” I yelled. I took a few steps back, unable to control my trembling. I can’t believe this is happening again… I thought this was over… “Don’t worry; I didn’t hurt her, Sophie. I know she means a lot to you, and I couldn’t stand to see you sad or upset,” he said. “I love you.” There were those three words again. But something in his voice made it seem convincing. What do I do? If I’m quick, I could make it outside. “You know what I want more than anything in the world right now, Ricky?” I asked him. He looked hopeful as he took a step closer. “What is it, my love? I’ll get it for you.” I tried to glare at him as best I could, but the tears were getting in the way. I tried to put as much venom in my voice as I could. “I want you dead.” I saw something flicker in his eyes. Sadness? Regret, maybe? His smile faltered, but regained just as quickly. “Sophie… I know you don’t mean that,” he said, a hint of anger in his voice. “Why can’t you just leave me alone?” I yelled. “Because I love you, Sophie!” he yelled back. The desperation in his voice was overwhelming. Why couldn’t he just get it through his head? But most importantly, why the hell is he still alive? “Love? You call this love ?” I whispered through tears. “Raping me, terrorizing me, and almost killing the people I care about… that’s love to you?” “I did it all for you, Sophie. You have to know that.” “Why aren’t you dead?” I blurted out. I wanted to know how he survived. How he got away. I needed to know why he wasn’t dead. He took a deep breath and looked at me, taking a step closer. “None of that matters, Sophie. As long as I’m here for you,” he said. I saw him getting angrier by the second. “Now you’re going to come with me, whether you want to or not. We’re finally going to be together, and nothing is going to drive us apart.” I shook my head, edging towards the door. “No, I’m not going with you.” “You will Sophie; whether you like it or not.” I took my chance and ran out the door and down the stairs. I heard his footsteps close behind me, and getting closer. The front door was almost ten feet from me. I could make it. I almost reached the door when I was pulled back from my hair. I cried out in pain and fell to the floor. He was over me, pinning my arms above my head. I struggled but it was no use. “Just let me go,” I cried, looking away from him. “I can’t do that Sophie,” he replied, holding my wrists with one hand while holding his knife to my neck. He leaned down and tried to kiss me, but I twisted my head away. He pushed the blade of the knife down on my shoulder, breaking the skin and causing blood to flow. I cried out in pain as he ran the blade a few inches up my arm. “Stop, please,” I cried. I closed my eyes, trying to blink all of the pain away. A deep growling sound followed by screaming echoed in my ears, causing me to open my eyes. All of the weight suddenly vanished off of me, letting me breathe. I sat up, wincing at the pain in my arm. I watched as Naomi wrestled with Ricky on the floor, biting his arm and dragging him off of me. He was trying to get to his knife which was a few feet from him, but Naomi wouldn’t let go. He hit her with his free hand, but yelled out when she bit down harder. Ricky’s blood was dripping onto the floor. Taking my chance, I got up from the floor and ran towards the door. I grabbed my cell phone off of the counter and opened the door. “Come on, Naomi!”I called, running out the door. I heard her bark and run behind me. We both ran down the stairs and out into the courtyard. “Sophie, get back here!” I heard Ricky yell to me from the second floor. I ran faster, making it out of the courtyard and onto the sidewalk. It was pitch black and raining heavily. I was thankful for the flickering street lamps along the sidewalk. Still running with Naomi by my side, I dialed 911 on my phone. I put it by my ear and listened for three rings, and almost fell when I heard a lady pick up. “911, what’s your emergency?” “He’s chasing me,” I panted, running past the closed shops and restaurants. “Please, help me.” “Who’s chasing you, ma’am? I need your name and location.” “My name is Sophia Anderson. I’m running down 17th avenue west,” I panted. The coffee shop I had been in earlier came into view. “I’m at the coffee shop, please hurry!” “Alright, ma’am, I’m sending officers to your location. Would you like me to stay on the phone with you until help arrives?” “Yes please,” I said. Through the rain, I saw a familiar figure at the door to the coffee shop. I felt instant relief when I saw Scott locking the door. He hadn’t seem to notice me and turned around to walk to the back. I slipped on the sidewalk and fell hard on the concrete. The phone flew from my hand and into the street. Naomi was by my side, whimpering and licking my bloody shoulder. “Sophie!” I gasped and looked behind me, still on the ground. Ricky was running down the sidewalk, gaining closer. I quickly got up, ignoring the pain that was aching through my body. I retrieved my phone from the street and ran to the coffee shop door. I tried to pull it open, but then remembered Scott had locked it a few minutes earlier. I pounded on the door, hoping Scott was still inside. “Scott, Scott please, open the door!” I said, pounding on the door. I looked behind me to see Ricky getting closer and closer to me. In the corner of my eye, I saw a light in the coffee shop turn on. I looked back inside and saw Scott walking out of the kitchen. I banged on the door, trying to get his attention. He looked up and realized it was me. He quickly walked over to the door and unlocked it. I pushed it open and went inside, made sure Naomi was in, then closed it quickly. “Quick, Scott, lock the door. Please, lock the door!” I yelled. I was soaking wet from head to toe, and dripping all over the wooden floor of the coffee shop. “Sophie, what is going on? What’s wrong?” he said, fumbling to lock the door again. I heard the sirens in the distance, getting closer. Panting hard, I fell to the floor on my hand and knees. I felt pain all over, especially in my arm. Naomi shook herself off beside me, spraying me with water. She came over and licked my shoulder, which was still bleeding heavily. Scott kneeled beside me, putting a hand on my uninjured shoulder. “Sophie, what happened?” he said, looking at my bloody arm. Not answering him, I looked back at the door to see Ricky standing a few feet from the door. He was soaking wet, like I was. His face showed pure anger. Lighting flashed, lighting up his body with a faded blue color. I slid back, away from the door as far as I could. Scott noticed the fear on my face and glanced at the door, but Ricky was gone. Scott looked back at me, confusion in his coffee- brown eyes. “Sophie, you’re arm,” he said, trying to look at it. Naomi backed up to let Scott look at it. I drew my knees up to my chest and put my head down. Naomi rested her head on my knees, trying to comfort me. The sirens got closer and closer. Blue and red lights flashed outside in the rain. “Sophie,” Scott said, looking at me, concerned. “Sophie, what happened?” “He’s back,” I whispered, beginning to cry again. “He’s back…” Scott knew exactly who I was talking about. I had already told him what happened to me a year earlier. He began wondering what happened to Naomi, so I finally told him. “It’s okay, Sophie. It’s going to be okay,” he whispered, hugging me. Some officers pounded on the door, making both of us jump. Scott got up and unlocked the door for them. They came in and Scott helped me up. I explained what happened and they said they wanted me to come to the station. Scott offered to go with me, but I told him he needed to get back home to his family. He told me no, and came anyway. “Thank you,” I whispered to him. “Of course, Sophie,” he said, helping me up. After going to the police station, the officers drove me and Scott to the hospital to get my arm checked out. The bleeding had stopped, but the cut was deep and it hurt a lot. They wrapped up my arm and gave me some antibiotics. Scott drove me and Naomi home and led me upstairs. I assured him I would be fine, and he finally went home. I opened my door and went inside, followed by Naomi. The rose petals were still on the floor, but I tried to ignore them. I locked my door and walked into the living room. I laid on the couch next to Naomi and put a throw blanket over me. Naomi and I listened to the heavy rain hitting the roof until we both finally fell asleep. --------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------

Chapter 6 Sophia: I woke up to bright sunshine flooding in from the windows. Naomi shifted on top of my feet on the other end of the couch. I sat up, but winced when I felt a sharp pain in my left arm. Remembering the events from last night, I shivered and threw the blanket off of me. Naomi got up after me and followed me upstairs. I needed a shower desperately, so I turned on the shower on full blast, stripped out of my clothes, and got in. Feeling the hot, steaming water run down my back, I watched it disappear down the drain, rinsing off all of the blood and tension from last night. When I stepped out of the shower, I gazed at Naomi and realized she needed a bath, too. Her muzzle had dried blood on it and her fur was matted and messy. I whistled to her. “Come, Naomi.” She got up and padded over to me. I motioned for her to get into the tub and she jumped in. I turned on the hot water and watched it fill up. I got dressed in sweats and a tank top, thanking God that I didn’t have classes today. I went back into the bathroom and turned off the water once it was halfway filled. I covered her back with soap and lathered her up, scrubbing off all of the rain water and mud, and scrubbed all of the blood off of her muzzle. Once she was clean, I towel dried her, then let her air dry. I grabbed the brush and brushed through her fur, getting all of the tangles out of it. Once she was all dry and brushed, she jumped onto my bed and laid down. I grabbed the phone off of my dresser and dialed my mom’s house number. She needed to know… Darius needed to know. After a few rings, my mom picked up. “Sophie, honey! How are you?” she said in her cheerful voice. “Mom,” I whispered. The tears began to make their way down my cheeks again. “Sophie? What’s wrong?” she went from happy to concerned. “He’s back Mom,” I said. “Ricky’s alive.” I thought I heard her drop the phone. “Mom?” I heard her take a deep breath. “I’m here. Let me get Darius.” I heard her call for Darius, and a few moments later I heard his voice on the phone. “Sophie? What’s wrong? Why is your mother crying?” “He’s back, Darius,” I whispered. “Ricky is alive.” I heard Darius take a deep breath. “You need to come home, Sophie. You can’t be alone.” As much as I wanted to, I knew I couldn’t go home. It was likely he would just follow me and put them in danger. I had to think of an excuse, and fast. “I… I can’t. I have classes and work.” When I heard his sigh, I interrupted him before he could begin to argue. “I’ll be fine.” “Sophie, do you remember what he did? To Naomi? To me? To you ? You need to be surrounded by people, not alone in your house.” “I’m not alone, I have Naomi. Besides, I-” “Wait, how is he alive?” he interrupted me. I sighed, no sure how to answer him. “I don’t know.” “Sophie, come home now.” “No, I can’t.” “Why the hell not?” he sounded frustrated. “Because,” I began. “I’m going to visit Justin in England.” He didn’t say anything for a few minutes. “We’ll send you some money,” he finally said. “No, I’m fine-” I objected. “Sophie,” he said sternly. “We’re sending you money. No ifs, ands, or buts.” I smiled into the phone. “Thanks, Darius.” “Of course, Sophie. Here’s your mom.” I waited a second and then heard my mom’s muffled sobs in the phone. “Are you okay, Sophie?” “Yeah, no serious damage,” I lied. I knew that she knew I was lying. But I tried to make it sound as convincing as possible. She was pregnant, and I didn’t need her worrying about me. “Well, like Darius said. We’re sending you money so you won’t have to worry about that.” I heard her pause and take a few breaths. “I love you, Sophie.” “I love you, too, Mom,” I replied softly. “Call me tomorrow to check in, okay?” “Okay, Mom. Bye.” “Bye, Soph,” I heard her struggle with the last few words. She hung up and I put the phone on my lap. A few minutes later I picked it up again and dialed Sam’s number. A few rings later he picked up. “Hello?” “Hey Sam, it’s Sophie,” I said, trying to figure out how I was going to ask him. He didn’t know about Ricky, and I wanted to keep it that way. “Hey Sophie, what’s up?” “Um…” I said, trying to grasp the words I wanted to tell him. “I’m going to need a few days off from work.” “And why is that?” he asked, suspicion in his voice. “Well, I’m going to England,” I said. “Family issues,” I added. I heard him take a deep breath. I knew he wasn’t too happy about this, but I had to make some sacrifices. “How many days are we talking?” I finally heard him ask. “A week,” I said. “Maybe a little longer.” He sighed, and I knew he was frustrated. “Alright, fine.” I sighed with relief. “Thank you so much, Sam. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.” “You better,” he said, half joking. “I hope everything goes okay for you in England.” “Thanks, Sam. Bye,” I said. “Bye, Sophie.” I heard the click and lowered the phone from my ear. I sighed and looked at Naomi, who looked back at me. “Well, guess what Naomi,” I said. She pricked her ears excitedly at me. “We’re going to England.” --------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------

Chapter 8 Ricky: I slipped the thin silver blade in between the crack in the window, unlocking the locks that kept her room sealed. The moon was shining brightly, enough that I didn’t need a flashlight. The lock clicked, signaling I had entry to her house. I gently slid the window up and stepped into her room from the small balcony I was standing on. It was late, and I knew she would probably be arriving home soon from work. I walked over to her bed and felt the pillow and blankets, which were cold. I glanced at the clock, showing it was almost midnight. She would be home soon. The thought of seeing her made me happy. I felt like something wasn’t right. Looking around her room, I searched for a difference in the cold, moonlit room. Then I realized it. Where was the dog? I walked out of her room and down the stairs into the living room. There was still no sign of that God forsaken mutt that caused Sophie to get away from me yet again. I searched the kitchen; nothing. I walked to the back door, unlocked it, and peered outside on the balcony. Flower pots lined the rails of the balcony, including another side. There was a small, black, metal table with two chairs on either side with another flower pot in the center. It was a peaceful place, and it was just like Sophie to have one. But there was still no sign of the dog. Walking back inside, I closed and locked the door behind me. I walked back upstairs to her bedroom, still wondering where Sophie and the dog were. She should’ve been home by now. Where was she? I wonder if she went back home to her mother? If she did, I would be there too. I noticed a laptop on her desk, and decided to take a look at it. I opened it and turned it on, watching it come to life. Once it was loaded, I clicked on the internet, watching the box pop up. I clicked at the history button. Looking through the list, I didn’t notice anything out of the blue. There were mostly college sights and her email. Then I noticed something weird. Air fares to England. I clicked on it and waited for the screen to load. Once it did, I read what was on the page, widening my eyes. It said she’d bought a ticket to London, England. It was supposed to departure at eleven; a little over an hour ago. I stood up, knocking the chair back. I paced back and forth in front of the desk. It all made sense now. She took the dog with her, and that’s why it’s so quiet. I walked over to her closet, which had empty hangers in it. I opened her dresser drawers, finding that most of everything was gone. Why would she go to London? She must have some sort of reason. Did she do it to get away from me? She can’t get rid of me that easily. I love her, and I would follow her anywhere in the world. And that’s what I decided to do. I went back to the desk, putting the chair up right and sitting on it. I clicked the available departures to London, England. There was one leaving at seven in the morning. I clicked the ‘Buy Tickets’ button and waited for the paper to print out. “You will be mine , Sophie,” I whispered aloud. “Forever and ever. I promise.” --------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- ------------

Chapter 6 Sophie (ENGLAND) “Let’s go, Naomi. You want to see Justin?” As soon I said his name, her head perked up and her tail started wagging. “Okay, let’s go girl.” She hopped off of the couch and ran to the door. Making sure I had my phone, hotel key, and the slip of paper with his address on it, I grabbed her leash and opened the door, letting her pull me to the elevators. We went down once more, entering the lobby. I waved bye to the young man that helped me before and went out the front doors. We walked out along the sidewalk, gazing at a park that was across the street. Making sure there were no cars, I crossed with Naomi and entered the park. It was quiet, and the bushes and trees swayed as the wind blew. The air smelled of fresh bagels, making my mouth water. I followed the scent to a bagel stand, and decided I was hungry enough for a bagel. Giving the man my money in exchange for a bagel, I sat on a nearby bench and nibbled on it, giving Naomi a piece every other minute. When I was done, I decided it was time to finally go and surprise Justin. I took out the slip of paper with his address on it and studied it. I wondered if it was close to here. I also wondered if he was even home. I hoped he wasn’t in class, or if he had a job and he was there right now. We began walking again, in a direction I wasn’t even sure was right. Naomi barked when she saw pigeons and tried to run after them. They all scattered and flew away, causing Naomi to jump on her hind paws. I laughed at her, glad she was having fun. “Sophie?” I stopped dead, not laughing anymore. That voice was so familiar. I turned slowly, gasping silently when I saw him there, a few yards away from me. Naomi turned and noticed him, too. She wagged her tail and barked, trying to pull away from me. “Justin…” I whispered. My eyes began to tear up, and I blinked, letting one slip down my cheek. I dropped Naomi’s leash and ran for him, extending my arms and tackling him in a hug. “I missed you so much.” He was still the same. He still looked the same, he still sounded the same… he even felt the same as I embraced him tightly. “Sophie…” he whispered, pulling back. “I missed you, too.” And right then, his lips were on mine. By then, I was crying out of happiness. All of my bad memories, and everything that happened in the past couple of days seemed to slip away. Ricky became just a memory to me, knowing I was safe in Justin’s arms. We both pulled back, catching our breath. Naomi came up and jumped on Justin, wagging her tail and licking his face. We both laughed, knowing Naomi missed him as much as I did. We hadn’t seen each other in nine months, and I was so happy to see him. Naomi jumped down, but still wagged her tail as she stared up at Justin. He looked at me, his eyes filled with love, happiness and confusion. “It’s so good to see you,” he said, embracing me again. “What are you doing here?” I stepped back, not meeting his eyes. I didn’t want to tell him why I was here. But I knew he had a right to know. I started crying again as memories flooded back into my mind. Meeting his eyes, he instantly knew something was wrong. “Ricky is back…” I whispered. “He attacked me a few nights ago.” His eyes filled with anger, sadness, and bewilderment. “I thought he was dead,” he said flatly, gritting his teeth. When I shook my head, he sighed. “How could he be alive?” shook my head. “I don’t know. But when I told my mom and Darius about it, they wanted me to come home. Home is the first place he’d look for me, so I told them no. That’s when I told them I was going to England,” I said, trying to smile, but failed. “He won’t know I’m here.” “So they still didn’t catch him?” he asked, eyes still burning with anger. “No,” I whispered. He pulled me into another hug and kissed the top of my head. “It’s okay, Sophie,” he whispered. “You’re safe here.” I leaned into him and hugged him again, drinking in his scent. He smelled like honey, and it was nice. A few minutes later, I pulled out of his hug and reached down to grab Naomi’s leash. I turned back to him. “Are you busy?” He smiled and shook his head. “No, I was just taking a walk. And then I saw you.” I wrapped my arm around his and started leading him in the direction of the hotel. “Are you hungry? My hotel has room service,” I told him. I thought for a second and smiled wickedly at him. “And a basketball court.” He chuckled and smiled down at me. “You’re on.” _____________________ i jumped when my phone rang from my pocket. I dug it out and answered it. “Hello?” “Where are you, Sophie? Tell me where you are right now .” I froze and dropped the phone on the bench I was sitting on. No, how did he get my number. That’s impossible. I blocked all numbers that weren’t programmed into my phone. I picked back up the phone and put it to my ear. “How the hell did you get my number,” I choked out. “Sophie, tell me where you are. I can’t find you. Where did you go, God dammit?!” he screamed into the phone. I flinched, but kept the phone in my hand. “Somewhere you’ll never find me. Now just leave me alone !” I shouted, hanging up the phone. How did he get my number? Why wasn’t it blocked? Most importantly, what would he do if he could never find me? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 11 Ricky: I lowered the phone from my ear, growing angrier by the second. Walking out of the airport, I signaled a taxi. It pulled over and I got in. “Where to, mate?” he said in a thick British accent. I looked down at my phone and decided to track her by the GPS in her phone. I got the location and looked at the driver. “Park Plaza Hotel in Westminster Bridge, please,” I told him. “Step on it.” “Alright, mate.” The ride there was quiet. I looked out the window the whole time, gazing at the different buildings and statues we passed. It was a busy city, by the looks of all the people walking on the streets. Most of them were either on cell phones or in a hurry, and sometimes both. I was growing impatient after ten minutes passed. “How much longer,” I said, gritting my teeth. “Chill out, mate. We’re here,” he said, stopping the car. I looked up to a tall, glass building. The sun reflecting off of it made it hard to stare at it for long. I reached in my pocket and pulled out some money, then handed it to him. I got out of the car and slammed the door. It was warmer in London than I thought. The heat would have been unbearable had the wind not been blowing heavily. The building was bigger than I thought. A hundred floor, easy. I ran inside and up to a man at the front desk. My footsteps echoed in the empty lobby, signaling my entrance. The man looked up and smiled at me. “Hello, sir. Can I help you?” “Is there a Sophia Anderson here by any chance?” I asked him quickly. “Let me see…” he said, typing into his computer. Moments later he looked back at me. “Yes, there is. In room 279A on floor twenty-nine. Would you like me to call her down?” “No, thank you. I’ll find her myself.” I ran over to the elevators and pressed the button for up. When the door dinged and opened, I ran inside, frantically pressing button twenty-nine. I turned around the I felt the sun on my back, shining in through the glass elevator. I could see Big Ben and all of the other old building around it. The view was incredible. But the view is the last thing I should be worried about. All I wanted was Sophie. When the door opened I ran down the hallway, gazing at the numbers to the rooms and not finding hers. Finally finding hers, I pounded on the door, calling her name. “Sophie, open the door. Open the door right now!” No answer. “Sophie, open up now!” No answer. After pounding on the door for over five minutes, I realized she wasn’t in there. A maid passed me and looked at me strangely. I couldn’t just wait here outside her door. Someone would think something is wrong. I didn’t want anyone to know. I decided I would come back later when I knew she would be here. I went back to the lobby and approached the desk once more. “How much for a room? And what’s the closest I can have to floor twenty-nine?” I asked him impatiently. He typed some keys and clicked the mouse a few times then looked back at me. “We have one room available. It’s a single bed, and it’s on the thirty-first floor.” “I’ll take it,” I told him, handing him my card. He swiped it and handed it back to me, along with a hotel key. “Here you go sir. I hope your stay is a good one.” “Yeah, whatever, thanks,” I mumbled, walking back to the elevators. I grew anxious, knowing I would see Sophie soon. I would forgive her for last time. I knew she was just scared. She loves me… I know she does. ~ I waited in my room for over five hours, pacing and staring out the huge glass windows coving one side of the wall. The sun set and the bright, shining moon rose high in the sky, and I knew it was time to go to Sophie. She would be waiting for me. Walking out of my room, I made sure I had my room key. I walked to the elevators and went down to floor twenty-nine. There was a maid, the same one who passed me before, coming out of a room as I stepped out of the elevator. She looked at me once then hurried down the hall, in the opposite direction of Sophie’s room. “Smart choice,” I whispered to myself, walking in the direction of Sophie’s room. I approached the door and knocked on it softly. “Who is it?” I sighed in relief as I head Sophie’s sweet voice on the other side of the door. If she knew it was me, she wouldn’t open the door. I coughed, changing the tone of my voice. “Room service.” I waited at I heard her unlock the door. When she opened it, she looked at me once and widened her eyes in horror. She tried to close the door just as fast, but I held my foot in the doorway, stopping it from closing. I pushed it open, making her fall to the floor. She tried to crawl away from me, scrambling to get up. I closed the door behind me and locked it with all of the locks possible. When I turned back around, the room was empty. I walked in and peered down the hall to the bedroom. The door was closed, and possibly locked. Approaching the door, I knocked on the door softly. “Sophie. Open the door. Now,” I said firmly. I heard muffled cries from the other side of the door, and a low growl. Damn, I forgot about the dog. “Sophie, I’m not going to hurt you. Now open the door.” “No…” I heard her cry. “I won’t.” Growing angry, I pounded on the door. “Sophie if you don’t open this door, I’m going to break it down.” I heard her cry more, knowing I probably scared her. Trying to calm down, I spoke softer. “I’m sorry Sophie. I didn’t mean to scare you. Now please, just open the door.” Putting my ear to the door, I heard her whispering in the room. “He’s here. Please, help me.” She was calling someone. I had no choice. I slammed my shoulder against the door, again and again. It finally broke in half, giving me entry into the room. I heard her scream and saw trying to scramble off of the bed, and when I tried to reach for her, I heard a growling sound beside me. Turning my head, I silently cursed to myself when I saw not one, but two dogs snarling at me. Sophie stood behind them, trembling against the wall. I pulled out the knife hidden in my jacket and pointed it at one of the dogs. “Sophie, I don’t want to hurt them. But if they keep me from you, I’ll have no choice.” She shook her head slowly, tears running down her cheeks. “Please, don’t hurt them. Not again,” she begged. “Please, don’t.” “Then tell them to calm down. I don’t want to hurt you, or the mutts.” She began to cry more as she called to her dogs. “Naomi, Kodiak, come.” They both stopped growling and went over to her. She slid down to the floor and let them lick her face, wiping away her tears. One of them whimpered, setting its head on top of her knees. “Good. Now get them both in the bathroom. I don’t want them interrupting.” She shook her head and put her arms around both of the dogs’ necks, pulling them close. “No.” I sighed. “Sophie, why did you leave me? Why are you in England? Don’t you love me?” She shook her head slightly, tears streaking down her face. We both jumped when there was a pounding at the door. “Sophie, are you in there? What happened, are you okay?” I knew that voice anywhere. I became so angry when I realized who’s voice that belonged to, I turned around, grabbed the glass lamp on the table, and through it at the wall. I watched as the glass shattered and fell to the floor, leaving only a little light in the room from the lamp on the other side of the room. “Why did you bring him here?!” I yelled at her. “It’s supposed to be you and me, nobody else!” I walked over to her and grabbed her by the hair, dragging her up to her feet. Both of the dogs whimpered as she cried out. She put one of her hands on my wrist, trying to pull her hair free as I dragged her down the hall and to the door. “Sophie, what happened? Are you in there? Sophie?!” He kept calling her and pounding on the door. “Tell him you’re okay,” I whispered into her ear. She just whimpered, stifling another cry. I pulled her hair tighter, making her cry out softly. “Justin…” she whispered. “Help…” I decided she wasn’t going to be of any help when it came to getting rid of him. I threw her down on the floor and went over to the door. Unlocking it and finally opening the door, I saw him standing there. He looked the same as he did over a year ago, just a little taller. When he saw me, his face immediately changed. I grabbed his arm as he came at me, pulling him into the room. I threw him further into the room then I closed and locked the door. Turning around, I saw him coming at me again. I twisted, causing him to miss. Coming up behind him, I hit him on the head hard enough to knock him out. He fell to the floor, unmoving. “Justin!” Sophie screamed, crawling over to him. I grabbed her arm and pulled her back, dragging her away from him. She struggled, trying to loosen my grip on her so she could escape. I’m sorry, Sophie,” I said. Then I hit her on the head hard, knocking her out as well. She went limp in my arms, and I lowered her to the ground. Her eyes were slowly opening and closing, until they finally stayed close. I lowered my ear to her chest, listening to her heart beat, making sure she was still alive. Unconscious, but alive. Dragging her back to the room, I laid her on the bed so she would be comfortable. The dogs were lying down next to each other, watching every move I made. One of them growled at me, but stayed down. I walked over to them and motioned them into the bathroom. When they only growled, I kicked the nearest one, causing it to yelp. It finally got up and went into the bathroom, the other one following. I closed the bathroom door, hoping that was the last I would see of the dogs. Walking back into the living room, the boy was still unconscious on the floor. I lifted him up and threw him on the couch with an effort. Pulling the duct tape out of the inside of my jacket, I smiled, knowing this was going to be a long night. But it was all for Sophie… And Sophie was the only one that mattered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------

Chapter 12 Sophia: I woke up with my head throbbing terribly. Blinking my eyes, I tried to look around at my surroundings. I was in my hotel room, lying on the bed. The only light in the room was the moonlight shining in through the huge windows. I sat up, wincing as my head throbbed more as I moved. I put my hand to my head and closed my eyes, then remembered what happened before I was knocked out. Opening my eyes again, I looked around the room frantically. “I’m glad you’re awake, Sophie.” I turned my head to a dark figure sitting on the chair in the corner of the room. I began to tremble again, knowing it was Ricky. How did he find me in England? I thought I’d be safe, but it turns out I was completely wrong. He stood up and walked over to the foot of the bed. I scooted back to the headboard, watching him. “Where’s Justin?” I demanded, glaring at him. He sighed angrily, clenching the footboard hard. “That doesn’t matter.” “Where is he?!” I shouted at him. He came over to the side of the bed and grabbed my arm, pulling off of the bed. He dragged me out of the room and into the living room. I gasped when I saw Justin in a chair, unconscious. There was duct tape covering his mouth, and tying his hands to the back of the chair. “Justin…” I whispered, staring at the dried blood on the side of his head. I looked back up at Ricky. “Please don’t hurt him… please.” He ignored me and let go of my arm, then walked over to Justin. He slapped Justin’s cheek a couple of times softly, waking him up. His eyes opened, but drooped again. When he saw me, his eyes flew completely open and started struggling in the chair. I tried to get to him, but Ricky held a knife out to me, warning me to stay back. I stopped and glared at him. “Let him go,” I begged him. Ricky slid the knife across Justin’s chest softly. “Only if you come with me, Sophie.” “Never,” I said. I felt the tears running down my cheeks again. He gritted his teeth and shrugged his shoulders. “Fine.” I watched in horror as the knife plunged into Justin’s upper stomach. He grunted and his eyes grew wide. Ricky retrieved the knife and looked back at me. “Will you come with me now?” “No, please just stop it! Please!” I begged him, hugging my arms. He shrugged again and stabbed the knife into Justin a second time, and them a third time, each time causing Justin to grunt in pain. “No, stop it please! Okay, I’ll go with you, just stop, please!” I begged him as he went to stab again. The knife was inches away from Justin’s chest. He looked over at me and smiled. “I knew you would understand, Sophie,” he said, wiping the blood off of his knife. Justin was bleeding heavily from his chest. I looked at him and saw him shake his head slightly. He was losing consciousness. “We need to get him help. If you promise me we’ll get him help, I’ll go with you. Just please, don’t let him die,” I whispered through tears. He sighed and shook his head. “Fine. Say your goodbyes. And do it quickly.” I walked over to him slowly and kneeled, becoming eyelevel with him. “I’m so sorry,” I whispered, hugging his head. I felt his warm blood seeping into my clothes. He needed help, and fast. I kissed his cheek, but was pulled away by Ricky before I could do anything else. He pushed me towards the door, not letting me look back at Justin. “You promised he would get help,” I protested. “And I’ll keep my promise. First, I’m getting you out of here.” He stepped in front of me and began unlocking the door. I saw a vase on the table next to me. Without having a second though, I grabbed the vase and hit his head hard with it. The glass shattered as it collided with his head. He made a grunt and went down to the floor. I stepped back, watching his body slowly rise and fall. He was still conscious. I stepped over him and unlocked the last lock to the door and ran out into the hallway. I ran towards the elevators, hoping to see someone on my way there. I pressed the button multiple times for the elevator, but it refused to open. “Sophie, get back here, dammit!” I gasped as I heard his voice coming from down the hall. Abandoning the elevators, I ran towards the stairs. He followed after me, stumbling on his feet. I knew his head had to be hurting him. But how was he up running after me? I could’ve sworn I knocked him out… I pushed the door to the stairwell open and began running down them. About three flights of stairs later, I heard the door swing open. “Sophie, get back here!” I looked up to see Ricky running down the stairs with surprising speed. I continued to run down the flights of stairs that seemed endless. Finally making it down the last flight of stairs, I pushed the door open and ran down the hall. Running past maids and other workers, I finally made it to the lobby where the same guy from before was at the desk. He stood up when he heard me coming. “Miss, are you okay?” he asked. The saw the blood on my shirt and his eyes widened. “Oh my God, you’re bleeding. I’ll call an ambulance.” “No, no, it’s not my blood. Call the police, please!” I begged, looking behind me. I didn’t seem him, or hear him calling my name anymore. “What happened?” he asked me, dialing the phone. “I was attacked,” I said, then remembered Justin. “Justin’s hurt, please, get an ambulance here. He’s hurt badly.” Everything coming out of my mouth was frantic babbling. I felt my knees give way under me and I fell to the ground, then everything went black. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

Chapter 13 Sophia: A bright light was shining down on me, causing me to wake up. I blinked my eyes a couple times and sat up, wondering where I was. I was sitting in a hospital bed, with my head pounding like crazy. Looking down, I realized I was in a gown, and my head had bandages around it. What was I doing here? What happened to me? “Hello Ms. Anderson. I’m Dr. Flint. I’m glad to see you’re awake.” A middle-aged looking man walked into the room, wearing a white doctor’s outfit and holding a clipboard. He walked up to the monitor and studied it, then scribbled something on the clipboard. “What happened?” I asked him. He looked over at me and smiled reassuringly. “Well, when you fainted you hit your head on the corner of the front desk. That’s what my report tells me, at least. You hit it pretty badly, too. You’re lucky.” “Where’s Justin?” I asked him, ignoring half of what he told me. “Ah yes, Justin. He had to undergo serious surgery. Had the paramedics not gotten there sooner, it would’ve been too late. He would’ve bled out.” I sighed, frustrated. “Yes, but how is he?” “He should be fine. We want to keep him in the hospital for another week or two. His stab wounds went deep, and we need to keep monitoring him.” I let go of the breath I didn’t know I was holding. Justin was going to be okay. Tears started to escape from the corners of my eyes. “Thank God,” I whispered. He smiled at me and patted my shoulder. “Would you like to see him? He’s asked for you a few times. But we couldn’t wake you, because-” “You couldn’t wake me?” “You’ve been in a coma for the past two days, Sophia.” In a coma? For two days? Where were Naomi and Kodiak? I hope nothing bad happened to them, or I would never forgive myself. I kept telling myself they were safe, and that nothing happened to them. But… where did Ricky go? “Can I please see him?” I asked. “Of course you can. Follow me.” I got off of the hospital bed, ignoring the throbbing pain in my head, and walked down the hall with him. We walked to the elevators and got in. He pressed a button and we waited a few moments, and then walked out of them again. The tile floor was cold on my feet, and I was shivering slightly. Dr. Flint led me into a room where I saw Justin. He was lying on a bed with his eyes closed. His head was wrapped up like mine, and he was hooked up to IV units. Dr. Flint held his hand out to Justin, motioning for me to go over to him. I walked to the side of the hospital bed and touched Justin’s cheek. It was warm and felt good on my fingertips. “Justin,” I whispered. I almost cried as his eyes slowly flickered open. He looked at me and smiled. “You’re awake,” he said, smiling at me. “I’m sorry,” I whispered, tears escaping from my eyes. “It’s not your fault, Sophie.” I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him, then pulled back and kissed him. “I love you.” He rubbed my cheek softly with his finger, sending shivers up my spine. “I love you, too, Sophie.” His eyes started to droop, and his breathing began to slow. He closed his eyes and dropped his hand from my face. “He just took his antibiotics. It puts him in a deep sleep. He won’t wake up for some time,” Dr. Flint explained. “And you should probably get some sleep, too.” I kissed Justin’s cheek one last time and stepped back. Dr. Flint escorted me back to my room, and then gave me two white pills. “Take these. They’ll help you sleep.” I did as he instructed, then sipped some water. “What’s going to happen to him?” I asked. “Well, like I said, we’re going to keep him for another week or two to help him recover. As for you, Justin suggested we send you back to America as soon as you’re ready to be released.” “And when will that be?” I felt my eyelids getting heavier every time I talked. He finished writing on the clipboard and looked at me. “Tomorrow.” Tomorrow? Justin wants me to just leave him here? While he’s in the hospital because of me? If he thinks I’m leaving, he’s crazy. “I hope he knows I’m not leaving.” I fought to keep my eyes open as long as I could. The medicine began to take serious affect, causing my body to shut down. “Well, actually, when the police came to get his statement yesterday, he asked that they escort you to the airport and made sure you got on the plane safely. Your stuff is over there.” He pointed to the other side of the room, where my suitcase was lying on the floor, under the window. “What… about… my dogs,” I mumbled, forcing my eyes to stay open. “Right now your dogs are being held at a shelter, under the utmost care. Tomorrow, they’ll be brought to the airport and put on the plane.” “How do you… know where… they are?” “I talked to a detective myself. He told me to pass on the information to you once you woke up.” “Will I even be… able to… fly?” I didn’t think I could stay awake much longer. I kept fading out, only half listening to what he was telling me. “During the time you’ve been asleep, your head injury has had enough time to heal. We’ll take off the bandages tomorrow. You should be able to fly, though.” I wanted to ask him another question, but I found I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer. I finally drifted off to sleep, feeling the pain fade away. ~ I got off the plane, ignoring the slight throbbing echoing throughout my head. My mom and Darius waved to me, and I walked up to them and gave them hugs. “Oh, Sophie! I knew I shouldn’t have let you go to England! My poor baby,” my mom said, hugging me tightly. “Mom, I know you missed me and all, but I can’t breathe,” I said, only half joking. She laughed through tears and stepped back. I gave Darius a hug and he took my bag for me. The hospital contacted my mom and Darius after confirming I wouldn’t be able to drive myself. My mom freaked out, like usual, and wanted to know if I was okay. There was still no sign of Ricky, but something told me he’d be back soon. Darius contacted the FBI and they have patrols guarding our house 24/7 like last time. We walked down to the luggage claim and waited for my bag. When we went to get Naomi, my mom wasn’t expecting Kodiak to be there. She looked at me questioningly, and I gave her an innocent smile. “Oh yeah, did I mention Naomi has a friend?” I said, getting them out of the cages. Naomi and Kodiak licked my hands, then greeted my mom and Darius.

Chapter 14 Ricky: “Sophie…” I whispered as I walked into the hospital. Cold air hit my face, making my eyes water. My head was still throbbing from a few nights before. I learned to ignore it, though. Searching for Sophie had kept me on my feet. I’ve searched every hospital in London, and this was the last hospital she could’ve gone to. I saw her being carried away in an ambulance. Her head was bleeding heavily, and the paramedics were working fast to try and get it to stop. I just hoped she was okay… Or I would never forgive myself. I walked out of the elevator and saw a middle- aged doctor talking to a nurse, scribbling something on a clipboard. He had silver hair and a salt-and-pepper stubble on his chin. The nurse nodded and walked away, leaving him alone. When I walked up to him, he looked up. “Hello, sir. May I help you?” “Yeah, is there a Sophie Anderson here by any chance,” I said, trying to blink away the painful throbbing in my head. “Ms. Anderson? Oh, no, not anymore. She left yesterday.” Damn. Well, at least I had some sort of lead. I knew she’d been in the hospital for a few days… because of me. “Do you know where she went?” “Yes, she was sent back to America,” he told me, eying me suspiciously. “Are you a friend of hers?” I tried to smile. “Yes, I am. I heard she was in the hospital and came to visit her, but since she’s back in America, I guess I’m too late.” “I’m sorry that you missed her, but I have to go to a surgery on the tenth floor. If you have any more questions, Linda will answer them for you,” he said, gesturing to a nurse behind the desk. She looked up and smiled at me. “No, that’s all I needed to know. Thank you,” I said. “You’re welcome. Goodbye.” He walked to the elevator and got in, looking at his clipboard again. So she went back to America, did she? I would go and get her, and tell her I was sorry. I never meant to hurt her. It was my fault she’d been in the hospital, and I had a feeling she would never forgive me. But at least I was going to try. ~ I pulled up to her apartment complex and paid the cab driver. Getting out, my head began to throb again. “Thanks,” I mumbled to the cab driver. “Sure thing, buddy,” he said with a thick Italian accent. I backed up as he drove off down the street. Turning around, I walked into the courtyard in the middle of her apartment complex. It was quiet, except for the sound of the fountain in the middle of the courtyard. I walked up the stairs to her apartment and knocked on the door softly. I waited, but there was no answer. I knocked a second time, but still no answer. I placed my hand on the knob and turned it. It was locked. I got the key from out of my back pocket and placed it in the lock, then turned it and unlocked it. I pushed the door open and walked inside. It was quiet and cold in her apartment. I walked upstairs and found it all empty. The bed was cold, and her clothes weren’t back. Had the doctor lied to me? Was she still back in London? Even if she was, I would wait for her. She had to come back sometime, and I would be when she got back. But first I needed a shower. I smelled musty and had dried blood in my hair. I walked over to her bathroom and turned on the shower. I used her shampoo and body wash, both smelling like rosemary mint. I loved that smell, and now I smelled like her. I got out and wrapped a towel around my bottom half, then picked up my clothes, looking for a washer downstairs. When I found it, I threw my clothes in and turned it on. I would be perfect for Sophie when she got home. And she would be perfect for me. --------------------------------------------------------------------

“Bye Scott,” I said, following Darius out the door. “Bye guys,” he said, walking behind the counter and taking the phone from Hannah. Hannah waved to us, and I waved back. We walked back to the car and got inside. “Okay, Sophie. Let’s get you home,” he said, starting the car again. “Home sounds good,” I agreed. We finally pulled into the parking lot to the apartment complex a few minutes later. Darius helped me get my suitcase upstairs and to my door. I dug my key out of the bag I was carrying and unlocked the door. Naomi and Kodiak walked in first after I took off their leashes. Kodiak started to sniff all of his surroundings with Naomi following him. Darius walked in with my suitcase behind him and put it by the stairs. He came over and gave me a big hug. “Thank you,” I said. “You’re welcome, Sophie. Call us tonight to let us know you’re okay.” “I will. Bye Darius,” I said as I walked him to the door. He opened it and I closed it behind him. I locked it and sighed. I turned when I heard a low growl behind me. Both Naomi and Kodiak were a few feet from the stairs, growling as they stared at something. “What’s wrong, guys?” I said, cautiously walking over to the stairs. I looked up but didn’t see anything. “Calm down, nothing’s there.” They still growled, staring past me on the stairs. I sighed. “Stay here,” I told them, beginning to walk up the stairs. About half way up the stairs, I jumped when one of them barked. “Shut up, you guys!” I whispered. “You almost gave me a heart attack!” They both whined and edged towards the stairs as I continued to walked up them. Entering my room, it looked the same as before. My laptop was right where it was, and my bed was made the way I left it. I breathed in, catching the familiar scent of rosemary mint. I walked further into my room, towards the bathroom. I gasped and turned when I heard the door close behind me. Ricky was standing with his hand on the knob. He locked it and took a step towards me. Part of me wasn’t surprised to see him, but another part of me was terrified. The flashbacks of what happened to Justin replayed over and over in my mind, causing my head to throb in pain once more. “Hello, Sophie,” he said casually. The tears began to well up in my eyes. “Get out.” “Why did you do it, Sophie?” he asked, ignoring me. A hurt look came across his eyes and he frowned. “Why did you run? You said you would go with me.” “Because I don’t want you,” I said, trying to look brave and unafraid. “Yes, you do, Sophie! Stop denying it!” he shouted. I heard scratches coming from the door, and a bark. He ignored them and took a step closer to me. “I’m not denying anything except you!” I shouted back. He clenched his teeth together. “You don’t mean that.” “Yes, I do,” I said. “How did you get in here?” He sighed. “I copied your key while you were knocked out in the hotel room.” “Why can’t you just leave me alone?” “Because I-” “Love me? You call this love, Ricky? Stalking me, stabbing my dog and step-dad, and almost killing my boyfriend? Not to mention raping me a year ago! That’s not love, Ricky!” I shouted at him. He grew angrier every word I said. He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a knife. I held my breath, realizing it was the same one he stabbed Justin with. “You will be mine, Sophie.” He pointed the knife and me and took a few steps closer. I turned and ran into the bathroom, closing it and locking it behind me. I jumped when he began slamming into it. The white, wooden door began to bend every time he collided with it. I knew it wouldn’t hold for much longer. “You can’t hide in there forever Sophie,” he said, slamming into it again. I searched around for a weapon, but couldn’t find anything useful. “Don’t make this hard, Sophie.” Another slam. I heard the wood start to split. I searched faster, but still couldn’t find anything. “Come on, Sophie. Just open the door.” Another slam. The wood made a huge cracking noise and started to split more. I finally looked up and decided to use the shower rod. I took it down and positioned myself to hit him as soon as he broke through the door. “Open the door!” he yelled, slamming into it again. The door finally broke in two, causing him to crash through the opening. I ran at him with the shower rod, hitting him in the stomach hard. He grunted and stepped back, but didn’t go down. He opened his eyes and grasped the rod with his free hand, pulling it away from me. I stumbled forward, hitting his chest. He wrapped both of his arms around me when I tried to push away from him. “I’m sorry, Sophie. I’m so sorry,” I heard him whisper. I pushed against him, but it was no good. I grunted softly and widened my eyes when I felt a sharp pain in my side. I looked down to see his hand holding the knife into my side. My blood dripped onto the white carpet and only his hand. I looked back up at him to see tears running down his face. “I…” I whispered. My eyelids god heavily and the strength was draining from my body fast. My knees gave in and I fell into Ricky’s arms. The last thing I saw before slipping into darkness were tears falling down his cheeks and onto mine. --------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------

~Two Weeks Later~ Chapter 16 Sophia: I blinked my eyes open, staring into darkness. Where was I? And what happened to me? Memories came flooding back, making me shiver. I remembered what had happened. Ricky had stabbed me, and then all else was blank. I moved my hand to my side where my wound was, and my fingers brushed a huge bandage wrapped around my waist. I cried out in pain as I tried to sit up. My side throbbed in pain as I fell back on my pillow. I looked around at my surroundings, realizing I was in my room, in my bed. I looked at the window, seeing the drapes closed all of the way. My laptop wasn’t on my desk, and the phone on the bedside table was gone. “I’m glad to see you’re finally away, my love.” I turned my head to see Ricky’s silhouette outlined in the darkness, standing at my door. I stayed where I was, not wanting to feel the pain in my side again. “You’ve been asleep for some time now.” He walked into the room and kneeled by my bed. He stroked my hair, brushing it off my forehead. “For two weeks.” I stiffened. Two weeks? My first thoughts focused on Naomi and Kodiak. Where were they, and what did Ricky do with them? “Where…” I began to whisper. He held his hand up, silencing me. “Calm down. They’re down stairs. They grew quite fond of me, actually,” he said proudly. I glared at him, knowing he was lying. Naomi knew who he was, and know what he did to me; what he did to her. She was scarred forever because of him. “Liar,” I choked out. He laughed through his nose and smiled at me, flashing his pearly white teeth. “Yeah, you’re right. They hate me. But they are downstairs, unharmed and taken care of.” “Why has no one come looking for me?” His smile disappeared. “They tried. As far as they’re concerned, you’re away visiting a friend in Chicago right now.” I stared at him. Surely no one could believe I went to Chicago. But it was Ricky, so he gets what he wants, clearly. I tried to move away, but winced in pain again. He cupped my cheek with his hand, stroking it gently with his thumb. “Shhh, don’t move Sophie. Your body needs more time to heal itself.” “I want Naomi and Kodiak,” I demanded, moving my face away from his hand. He sighed and stood up. “Okay, Sophie. Anything for you.” And then he disappeared into the darkness down the hallway. I stared up at the ceiling, beginning to think of ways to escape. Memories of the beach house started to come back, but I shook them away. Pretending to love him wouldn’t work a second time. Ricky was blinded by obsession, not stupid. I came to the conclusion that I had once come to before: I needed to kill him if I was going to survive. But this time I would make sure he was dead. I turned my head when I saw both Naomi and Kodiak pad into my room. They licked my hand when I reached out to them. Naomi whimpered at me, and Kodiak tilted his head to the side. I patted the bed beside me, and they jumped up. I gasped at the sharp pain in my side when the bed moved underneath their weight, but shook it off. “Do you need anything else, my love?” he asked me. “My old life back,” I said, not looking at him. “And you dead.” I gasped in pain when Ricky backhanded me across the face. “Never, and I mean never, say that again. Are we clear?” I felt blood trickling from my mouth when I bit my lip, trying not to cry out. He grabbed my chin and made me look at him. His eyes were full of anger and regret. “I said are we clear?” I avoided his gaze, averting my eyes to the side. He screamed and swore when I heard a growl. He released his grip from my chin and I looked up. Naomi was on top of him, biting his arm. He hit at her, causing her to yelp. I closed my eyes tightly, wishing I could help her. She saved my life all those other times, but when I needed to help her, I was powerless. I couldn’t move without feeling the unbearable pain in my side. My eyes opened again when I heard another yelp. Naomi was on the other side of the room on her side. Ricky struggled to get up, but pulled a knife out as he walked over to her. I threw the blankets off of me, prepared to force my body into getting up and save her. “You stupid mutt,” he shouted. He raised the knife, but Kodiak growled and jumped off the bed, standing between Naomi and Ricky. His hackles were raised and he was showing his teeth. “No, Ricky, please! I understand, I’ll listen to you! Please, don’t hurt them,” I cried, finally letting the tears escape from my eyes. He sighed and lowered the knife, but Kodiak kept growling. I sat up, biting my lip and trying to ignore the pain in my side. “Don’t hurt them,” I said, more demanding this time. He looked at me and his smile returned. The knife went back in his jacket and he backed away from Kodiak and Naomi. Naomi scrambled up, panting hard, and jumped back up on the bed, lying next to me. Kodiak followed her, sitting on my other side. He laughed, voice full of cold heartedness. “Fine, I won’t hurt them,” he said. Before I even had time to blink, he was in front of me again. He pressed his lips against mine, surprising me. I tried to pull back, but he pushed against the back of my head. He ignored the warning growls of Naomi and Kodiak beside me, deepening the kiss. I tried to resist, but he kept pressing on. He pulled back unexpectedly and laughed, inches away from mine. “I love it when you resist,” he said. I pulled away, wrapping my arm around my side when the pain started again. I used the back of my free hand to wipe my lips off, trying to get rid of the disgusted feeling washing over me. “You’ll get used to it.” “No, I won’t,” I whispered, hoping he heard me. If he did, he just ignored it. “Oh, and learn to control those things you call pets,” he said, inspecting his bloody arm. “She nearly tore my arm off.” “She was just protecting me. She get’s defensive when it come to me getting hurt. It’s not her fault,” I told him, defending Naomi. “Unless you want that to happen again, I suggest you don’t hit me again,” I added, bravely. “Demanding, aren’t we?” he asked. “I wouldn’t have to hurt you if you just did what you were told, Sophie. Then we won’t have that problem.” “And you think I’m going to listen to you?” “Unless you want me to force you, or hurt your mutts, then yes. I’m pretty sure you’re going to listen to me.” I looked away angrily. He was getting smarter, and I needed to be just as smart if I was going to get out of here. His tone softened. “Are you hungry?” “No.” “Well, you have to eat some time. And you’re confined to this room, so if you want something to eat, you have to ask me.” “Why?” “Remember what happened last time? I let you walk around the house like it was yours, and look what happened. Not again, Sophie.” He was right. I had taken advantage of my privilege, but it was for good reason. “So, what, am I just going to stay here for the rest of my life?” “No. In a week, we’re leaving. No one will ever see us again.” I stiffened. “Where?” “Colorado. I bought us a cabin in the woods up in the mountains a few months ago. I had hoped to take you there sooner, but it took me a while to get to this point.” A cabin in the woods. No one would ever find me again. If I didn’t get out in less than a week, I wouldn’t been seen ever again. “What about Naomi and Kodiak?” I asked, stroking their fur. “We aren’t taking them with us.” “But-” He held up his hand, interrupting me. “I’ve made up my mind. Now get some sleep. You need to heal your wound. I’ll wake you for breakfast in the morning.” And with that, he walked out of the room, closing it behind me. I heard a click , and I assumed he locked it from the outside. What had he done, installed another lock? Even so, I still had a window. I got up and resisted the urge to cry out in pain. Limping over to the window, I opened the drapes. My room was high up; on the forth story. If I jumped, I would die. But if I could hang down and jump onto another balcony below me, I would probably get away. I unlocked the window, but froze when I saw a red light blinking on the side of the window. It was an alarm system, when meant if I opened the window, Ricky would know. Well, there goes that plan. I locked the window again and closed the drapes, trying to think of other ways to escape. I laid down back on the bed again and stared up at the ceiling, thinking. I had a week, or I would never be found again. I doubt hardly anyone knew about the cabin in the woods, let alone who bought it in the first place. Would I be able to get away from Ricky, or would I finally have to give in to him? --------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 17 Ricky: Quietly turning the knob, I pushed the door open, peeking into her room. She was asleep on her bed, breathing quietly. I watched her chest rise and fall to the rhythm of her breathing. Stepping into the room, I quietly walked over to her. She looked so beautiful, even as she slept. I jumped when I heard a low growl from the foot of the bed. One of the dogs by her feet was watching me cautiously, slightly showing their teeth. I glared at it, and then returned my gaze to Sophie. My fingers brushed her forehead and traced it down to her chin. Her skin was flawless, and it was all mine. My fingers softly combed her soft, light brown hair. I held my breath when she stirred, turning over to her side with her back facing me. I brushed the hair from her shoulder off, letting it fall behind her back. The dog growled at me again, but I ignored it. I stepped away from her when she made a soft moan, and then turned around, blinking sleep out of her eyes. When she saw it was me, all of the sleep left her eyes and she scooted away. “What do you want?” she demanded, hugging her stomach with one arm. “I was just checking on you,” I said, sitting on the side of the bed. She yawned and ran her fingers through her hair. “Great, you’ve checked on me. Now leave.” “No,” I replied. “Yes, now get out.” I grabbed her wrist and pulled her harshly to me, making her face his my chest hard. I heard her gasp sharply in pain, and her arm was at her side again. “No, I won’t get out.” The dogs were up and growling at me. Their hackles were raised and their teeth were showing. Sophie was pushing against my chest, trying to get away. I held her wrist tightly, knowing it would leave a bruise. “I’m sorry, please let go,” she begged as she stopped pushing. I bent down and kissed her forehead. She flinched, but stayed where she was. “Good girl.” I released my grip on her arm, letting her back up to the headboard. She rubbed her wrist, holding it to her chest. I instantly regretted what I did. I moved closer to her, but she scooted away. Sighing, I got up and walked towards the door. “I’m sorry,” I whispered, walking out the door. I closed it behind me- remembering to lock it- then walked down stairs into the living room. It was quiet and cold, despite the scorching heat outside. I carefully sat on the beige sofa and turn on the TV. I sat there for a few hours, blankly staring at the television screen, deep in thought. I knew how I was going to get Sophie to Colorado next week, but I also knew she wasn’t going to go willingly. She’ll soon understand that there isn’t a way out of this. She would be with me in the cabin, and this time, I would make sure it was forever. --------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- -

Chapter 18 Sophia: I woke up with a pounding in my head, causing me to moan painfully. Sitting up, I looked around my room. Kodiak and Naomi were lying at my feet, still awake, and the room was quiet. Ricky was nowhere in sight, so I sighed, relieved. Naomi and Kodiak looked up as I got up from the bed, then walked towards the door. When one of them whined, I motioned for them to stay, and then turned back towards the door. As I reached for the handle, I remembered last night. How many times had he come to check on me during the night? What did he do to me even if he was in the room? I shook my head and turned the knob. Surprisingly, it was unlocked. Had he forgotten to lock it after he checked on me? Or did he leave it unlocked on purpose? I pulled the door open as quietly as I could, inch by inch, until it was wide enough for me to just fit my body through it. Stepping out into the hallway, I felt a sudden chill run down my spine. Quietly, I tiptoed down the carpeted stairs that led into the living room. When I was at the bottom step, I peered around the corner. No one was in the living room, to my surprise. I walked across the living room towards the kitchen, growing more anxious by the second. I stepped onto the cold tile and looked into the kitchen, but saw no one. Where was he? Part of me was relieved not to see him, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something didn’t feel right at all. My stomach growled, and I groaned. Now was not a time to be hungry. I ignored my stomach and walked towards my front door. Quickly, but carefully, I unlocked all of the locked and turned the knob. I opened the door, narrowing my eyes at the bright sunlight shining through the door. The hot concrete burned the bottom of my feet as I stepped out of the door. Ignoring it, I closed the door behind me and ran towards the stairs as fast as I could. I flew down the stairs and out into the court yard. “Whoa, where do you think you’re going?” a voice said as I was pulled back by the collar of my shirt. I gasped as I hit the hot ground hard. Looking up, I saw Ricky holding a paper bag in one arm. He was smiling, almost friendly, but the look in his eyes was deadly, as if telling me not to make a scene. I looked up at him, clenching my teeth in frustration. He motioned for me to get up, and I did. He grasped my arm and pulled me towards the stairs. I resisted, pulling back. “Are you sure you want to do that?” he whispered harshly at me. I felt a sharp point at my side, where my wound was. I looked down to see he had a knife at my side. He pressed it against my side, causing me to inhale sharply. Giving in, I finally let him pull me towards the stairs. He led me up them and to the door. Motioning for me to open it, he shifted the paper bag to his other arm, letting me go. I turned the knob and pushed the door open. He pushed me inside, making me stumble on the way in. I caught myself on the wall and stood up straight. He closed and locked the door behind him, then walked past me into the kitchen. “I guess this teaches me not to be gone that long,” he said. I heard him open the refrigerator, then paper tearing open. I looked into the kitchen and widened my eyes. He was putting groceries into my refrigerator. I crossed my arms, angry. “Look, you don’t own the damn place. This is my apartment,” I said, leaning against the wall. I didn’t know what it was, but I felt braver talking to him then I did the previous times. I knew he would never mean to hurt me unless he had to, despite when he stabbed me. No matter how much I hated him, he still seemed to believe I loved him. He chuckled, continuing to put food away- in the correct places. It didn’t surprise me. He practically knew everything else about my life; why couldn’t he know where I put what foods? “No, it’s our apartment. For now, at least.” “Excuse me? There’s no ‘our’,” I said, putting air quotes around the word ‘ our’ . He sighed, but continued to put the food away. “Well, soon we won’t be living here anymore. The cabin is already set up in Colorado. We’re leaving on Tuesday.” “What day is it today?” “Sunday.” “Well, I’m not going,” I said firmly. “Yes, you are.” “No, I’m not,” I said bluntly. Before I could stop myself, I said, “Why can’t you just get it through your head that I don’t love you?” He stopped and slowly turned towards me. “Because I know you don’t mean it.” The look in his eye was deadly again, causing me to step backward. “Why are you doing this to me?” “Because I-” “No, you don’t!” I screamed, interrupting him. He clenched his fist at his side and spoke through his teeth. “We’ve had this conversation more than enough. I suggest you go to your room.” “Why’d you chose me?” “What?” he said. For the first time, I think I startled him with what I had said. Nothing else seemed to through him off guard, but he looked actually confused this time. “Why did you chose me?” I repeated, forcing myself to keep eye contact with him. “I don’t know what you mean.” “Why do you claim you love me? When I didn’t even know who you were when you showed up at my house that night.” Something flickered in his blue eyes, but instantly left. He seemed as if he was remembered the past, watching memories. I watched him shake his head, breaking eye contact with me. He smiled and laughed through his nose. “I guess you can say love at first sight.” “But you killed all of those other girls,” I said, forcing myself to keep my voice level. The need to know why was growing, making me desperate. “What other girls? There is only you, Sophie.” Now it was my turn to be shocked. “What other girls? Do you not remember Kimberly Wilson?” I asked. His face paled, making him look like he’s just seen a ghost. “She was my classmate. And you killed her.” I never knew the whole story about what had really happened to Kim, but Darius told me enough. He confirmed that it was Ricky who killed all of those other girls. The DNA tests matched all of them. He’d killed all of them, including a few guys. I remembered the assembly we had, over a year ago, about what had happened, and I knew I would never forget it. He spoke through his teeth again, clenching them together with force. “Never say her name again. She didn’t love me, so I had no choice.” “But I don’t love you, and you haven’t killed me,” I said, taking the risk. What I said didn’t come out the way I wanted to, but I knew he’d grasp the concept of what I was trying to ask. He turned away, breaking eye contact again. “You’re different.” “How?” “Because I know you’re the one.” I sighed, knowing I would never get a real reason. “Fine, don’t tell me why you’ve decided to ruin my life. Thanks for nothing,” I said. Before turning away from him, he looked back at me. I caught a glimpse of guilt and sadness in his eyes. I ignored it and walked back up to my room. I slammed my door, causing Naomi and Kodiak to pick their heads up in surprise. Crashing down onto my bed, I ignored the painful throbbing in my side. I grabbed a pillow and cried into it. I wasn’t sad, I was angry. Angry at Ricky, angry at myself. I heard a soft knock at my door, then the tiny squeak as it opened.

“Sophie?” “Go away,” I mumbled into the pillow, loud enough for him to hear. He sighed frustratingly, and I heard him step into the room. “Sophie, I’m sorry-” “I said go away!” I yelled, not caring if he got angry or not. It wouldn’t make a difference if he hit me or not. At this point, I didn’t think I would care. I knew he wouldn’t, though. If I’d learned anything about him after everything he’s done to me, it’s that I know he doesn’t hurt me unless he’s forced to. “Alright, I’ll give you some time alone. I’ll bring your dinner up in a few hours.” “Don’t bother. I’m not going to eat.” He sighed once more and said "Her name was EMMA", and then I heard the door finally shut. I didn’t heard the click of the lock, so I assumed he’d left it unlocked. For three hours, I sat on my bed, letting the tears roll down my cheeks as I stroked Naomi and Kodiak. Every once in a while one of them would lick my cheek several times, trying to wipe away the tears. I was grateful I had both of them, but something told me I would never see them again if I didn’t escape before Tuesday. I knew it was useless though. Ricky was psycho, not stupid. But I knew I couldn’t give up, even if it meant I had to kill him. Something told me, that if it got to that point, I wouldn’t have a hard time doing it. After what he’s done to me, to my family, to Justin, I knew I wouldn’t even think twice if given the opportunity. I looked over at the door when I heard a soft knock. “Sophie?” Ricky said from the other side of the door. I turned away as he opened the door and stared up at the ceiling again. “Sophie.” “What?” I whispered. “Dinner’s ready.” “I’m not hungry.” I heard him walk into the room and set a plate on my bedside table. The smell of garlic bread drifted past my nose, causing my mouth to water. The bed shifted as he sat beside me. I felt his hand slide onto my stomach and turn me towards him. I pulled back, edging away from him. When he pulled me back to him, I finally turned around, glaring at him. “What do you want?” “For you to eat, Sophie. You can’t starve yourself.” I turned away from him again, hugging a pillow. I heard either Naomi or Kodiak growl quietly, but stayed by my feet. “Watch me.” “Sophie,” he said with a hint of warning in his voice. “Eat.” “No. When I’m hungry, I’ll eat.” He grabbed my arm and turned me to face him, which startled me for a split second. He grabbed both of my shoulders and squeezed them, causing me to wince in pain. Both Naomi and Kodiak were growling, louder now, but they didn’t move. Ricky’s eyes were full of anger, but they were also filled with sadness and longing. “Sophie, I said eat.” “I’m not hungry,” I whispered, glaring back at him. Just then, he kissed me. It startled me, but scared me at the same time. One thing that I don’t think I will ever figure out about Ricky is how fast his mood changes. One minute he’s angry with me, then the next he’s kissing me, as if trying to say sorry. I tried to pull back, feeling the disgusted feeling grow every moment our lips were connected. It was no use, though. The kiss was filled with force and anger. When he pulled back I dropped back down on the bed, gasping for breath. “Stop doing that!” I yelled, holding my hand up to slap him. He grabbed my wrist and held it in place. “Don’t you dare raise a hand to me, Sophie.” “Or what, you’ll kill me?” I said, feeling all of the fear drain out of my body. It was replaced with anger and bravery. I wasn’t afraid of him anymore. I’d had enough of him. I’d had enough of his little game. I watched as his eyes filled with regret and burned with anger, like they had before. “I could never kill you, Sophie. I love you. And we are going to be together forever.” Something in his voice sent shivers up my spine. He’d said it so calmly that the fear began to trickle back into me. Giving up, I pulled my hand away and back up to the other side of the bed. “Just get out,” I finally said, turning away from him. I felt him get up off of the bed and heard him walk towards the door. “Sweet dreams, my love,” he whispered, closing the door. And this time, I heard the click of the lock after I heard the door finally close. "EMMA" I thought... -------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 19 Sophia: I bolted upright when I heard a loud bark ringing through my ears. My side throbbed painfully, causing me to gasp sharply. I held my hand on my stomach and gazed around the room, taking in full view of what was happening. Kodiak was standing at the foot of my bed, growling and baring his teeth at Ricky, who held a rope between his hands. Naomi was growling as well, but stayed on my legs protectively. When Ricky saw I was awake, he sighed in frustration. Blinking sleep out of my eyes, I glared at him. “What are you doing?” I asked, beginning to tremble. Suddenly I was afraid all over again. I didn’t feel as brave as I did the night before. The look on Ricky’s face was frantic, and I saw desperation in his eyes. “It’s time to go, Sophie,” he said, edging toward Kodiak. “We need to leave. And they aren’t coming with us.” “Don’t hurt them,” I whispered, trying to get up on my knees. I wrapped my arm around Kodiak and rested my other hand on Naomi’s back. The growling got softer, but they were still in their protective state. “Of course I’m not going to hurt them, Sophie,” he said, lowering the rope a bit. Then he added, “Well, not much.” Then he lunged towards Kodiak, surprising both of us. He wrapped the rope around Kodiak’s neck and pulled, dragging him off of the bed. I screamed, reaching for him. Naomi was on all fours now, jumping off the bed. I watched in horror as Ricky pulled Kodiak over to my bathroom and shove him in. Kodiak was yelping, then began to choke, knowing the rope was too tight around his neck. Naomi went after Ricky, but he grabbed her and threw her on top of Kodiak. I scrambled off of the bed and ignored the agonizing pain in my side. Getting a running start, I jumped on top of Ricky, causing him to stumble. He quickly realized it was me and threw me off. The wind was knocked out of me as I hit the ground hard. I was pulled back up and he threw me over his shoulder. I kicked and screamed, but he didn’t let go. Barking and scratching came from the other side of the bathroom door. “I can’t wait any longer. It’s time to go, Sophie,” he said, walking towards the door. “No, let me go!” I screamed, trying to escape from his gasp. He held onto me tighter going down the stairs. I was suddenly on the couch, gasping in pain. When I looked back up he was nowhere in sight. I took the chance and scrambled off of the couch, tripping over one of the legs to the coffee table in the process. I fell, hitting the carpet, but quickly recovered. I ran to the bottom of the stairs, but felt agonizing pain as I was pulled back by my hair. Falling backwards, I hit a hard-rock chest. When I looked up, I saw Ricky smirking down at me. “Don’t even think about it,” he said. I twisted in his grasp, digging my nails into his wrist and drawing blood. He just laughed wildly and pulled me closer to him. He acted like I was a piece of paper, holding my tightly against him. No matter how much I struggled, he just held onto me as if I was nothing. “I love it when you struggle, Sophie.” I tensed and stopped struggling. He’d never said something like that to me before. I felt the tears at the edges of my eyes. “Just let me go,” I begged. “Please, you’re hurting me.” He tensed up for a second, then all of a sudden he let go and I was on the floor. He knelt down and put his arms underneath my legs, and one arm around my waist. He picked me up from the floor and set me on the couch. When I looked up at him again, his eyes were sad, and I could see a tear fall down his cheek. “I’m sorry, Sophie. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” Forcing myself, I slowly picked up my hand and placed it on his cheek. He widened his eyes a bit, almost surprised. When his eyes softened, he placed his hand gently on my cheek and I fought the urge to pull away. The faint barks and yelps of Naomi and Kodiak came from upstairs. He leaned in, but I pulled away, not looking at him. There was no way I could kiss him after what he just did. Calm him down, yes. Kiss him? No. “Would you like to take something with you?” he asked. I looked up at him, surprised how sincere his voice sounded. Nodding, I got up from the couch and slowly walked towards the stairs. He grabbed my arm and guided me up the stairs and into my room. He let go, but stayed by the door. I fought the urge to run towards the bathroom door, but I knew he would make it there before I did. Walking over to my bed-side table, I opened the tiny drawer and pulled out a folded up photo. I stuck it into my pocket, hoping he didn’t see. I closed the drawer and turned back to Ricky. He raised his eyebrows slightly, and I nodded slowly. Motioning for me to come to him, I edged towards the door cautiously. He grabbed my arm again and led me downstairs. “Everything we need is already going to be there, including clothes,” he said, pulling me to the front door. He let me go for a brief second, reaching into the kitchen for keys, then held my arm again, unlocking the front door. He leaned over my shoulder and whispered into my ear, “If you try anything, I’m going to do something we’ll both regret. I suggest staying quiet.” I nodded slightly then opened the door. He pushed me out, closing the door behind him. It was pitch black, despite the flickering lamp posts down in the courtyard. I heard the quiet sound of the water dribbling down the sides of the fountain, and the chirps of crickets in the distance. There was a cold breeze blowing, making me shiver. I was still in my pale pink tank top and flannel pants. Without looking at him, I said, “I could’ve at least gotten dressed first.” He ignored me, guiding me down the stairs and into the courtyard. We walked out of the courtyard and into the parking lot. The asphalt was cold on my bare feet, making me shiver more. He led me to the far end of the parking lot, and I gasped when I realized the car he was taking me to. It was the same black SUV from a year ago. He didn’t seem to notice my surprise; he just opened the door to the SUV and helped me inside. Making sure I was okay, he closed the door and ran over to the driver’s side. He opened the door and climbed in, then closed his door. He paused and looked over at me, raising an eyebrow. “What?” I whispered. “Seatbelt, Sophie.” Oh. I felt like an idiot. Reaching up, I grabbed the seatbelt and slid it across my body, clicking it in place. He finally started the car and drove out of the apartment complex parking lot. ~ Eight hours later we were passing through Georgia. It was silent the whole time, and every once in a while I would doze off, but then wake right back up when Ricky stroked my arm. I was determined not to fall asleep, because every time he touched me I had to fight the urge to just give it all up and jump out of the car. I gave him a questioning look when he got off on one of the exits from the highway. Minutes later we were in a gas station parking lot. No one was there, seeing as how it was almost six o’clock in the morning. In the distance, the sun was beginning to rise slowly. Through the glass windows of inside the gas station, I saw a guy wearing a red vest behind the counter. He looked a few years younger than me, and I could tell he was dozing off sitting at the counter. “Sophie.” I jumped when Ricky appeared at my window. He opened the door and leaned in, putting his lips inches from my ear. “I trust you won’t make a scene,” he said. I looked down when he put something hard and papery in my hand. I looked down to see a roll of twenty dollar bills. I looked back up, but he spoke before I could ask him anything. “Pay for the gas, and whatever else you want. I’ll be watching you.”

Chapter 20 Ricky: She was asleep, snoring quietly. I forced myself to keep my hands on the steering wheel, remembering how I promised not to touch her. The sun was already high in the sky, and the roads were busier than they were a few hours ago. We were about ten hours away from Blanca Peak, the mountain that the cabin was on. I felt my eyes start to droop, remembering I hadn’t slept in over thirty-six hours. Maybe I could pull over in a few hours when we were deep in the mountains and rest. Reaching over, I grabbed the bag or snacks Sophie had gotten a few hours ago at the gas station. I pulled out a soda and drank it, hoping it would keep me awake enough to keep driving. I was afraid that if I fell asleep, Sophie would wake up and leave. That’s why we needed to be deep in the mountains- isolated from everyone else. I tensed when I heard her mumble something and shift her body to face me, hoping she didn’t wake up. She was beautiful as she slept. I would never get over it. Thinking about the cabin, I got excited, wondering what our future would be like. Would she ever try to run again? Would she grow used to me and our new life together? I hoped she would just learn to live with the fact I can’t live without her. She was… my everything. She was mine. “No…” she whispered in her sleep. I looked over at her, wondering what she was dreaming about. “No.” she said louder and firmer. “No!” She began squirming in her seat slightly, shaking her head. I noticed the beads of sweat forming on her forehead, and she was clenching her eyes together tightly. A tear escaped from the corner of her eye. Panicking, I pulled the car over on the side of the highway and shook her awake. “Sophie! Sophie wake up. It’s okay.” She opened her eyes and screamed, scooting away from me. Her eyes were filled with fear, and the tears were rolling down her cheeks. She was panting hard, like she had just ran a long way. Her clothes were all wrinkled from moving in her sleep. “It wasn’t a dream…” she whispered, widening her eyes. I gazed at her, confused. Then I knew what she was talking about. Closing my eyes, I sighed and turned the car back on. “No, Sophie. This is real,” I said blankly. She sniffled and turned away from me once more, but she never went back to sleep. I was fully awake now, and didn’t have to worry about sleep- which was good. I needed to keep an eye on Sophie from now on. I wouldn’t put it past her to try and run away, even if we were in the middle of nowhere. ~ “How much longer?” I heard her ask me six hours later. She stayed awake the whole time, and I knew she was determined not to fall asleep again. The sun was beginning to go down again, and it was getting chilly. “We’ll be in Colorado in a few minutes,” I replied. “But then it’s a few more hours until we get to the cabin.” “I’m hungry,” I heard her whisper, her voice cracking a bit. “Can we eat?” I thought for a minute, wondering if she was going to try and get away again. “No.” “Why not?” I heard the anger and impatience in her voice. “I thought you’d at least care about me enough to feed me. I guess I was wrong.” My heard dropped to my stomach, and I felt a wave of guilt wash over me. She was right. I couldn’t let her starve. I trust her. “Fine,” I said. “Where do you want to go?” “Surprise me.” My heart skipped a beat. Her voice sounded almost excited. I smiled. “Okay.” Five minutes later I was pulling off the highway and onto an exit ramp. I turned into the parking lot for a small diner. Sophie was staring ahead the whole time, a desperate look in her eyes. I then realized she must’ve not had anything to eat for the past twenty-four hours. I felt bad for not realizing it sooner. “Okay, let’s go. And Sophie,” I said firmly. She had opened the door and stopped, turning back to me. “Don’t try anything.” “Okay. I promise,” she whispered. She hopped out of the car and waited for me at the door. I opened it for her and motioned for her to go inside, then I followed her. The diner wasn’t empty, but it wasn’t filled with customers either. The scent of pancakes and steak filled my nostrils, making my mouth water. A young waitress came up to us and smiled a friendly smile. “Hello, welcome to Lisa’s Diner. Table for two?” she asked, grabbing menus from behind a counter. “Yes, please,” I said. She nodded and led us down a row of tables and booths, then finally sat us at a small booth in the corner. Sophie slid into one and immediately began looking at the menu. I hesitated and looked back at the waitress. Her nametag read Emily. “Thank you, uh, Emily,” I said, sliding into the booth across from Sophie. “No problem,” she smiled. “Your waitress will be right with you.” And then she turned away and left, going behind the counter and disappearing behind a kitchen door. I turned back to Sophie, who was frantically searching over the menu, looking for the perfect thing to eat. “You know, you can always ask for more than one thing,” I suggested, opening my menu. “I can?” she said, surprised. I looked up to her gazing at me. Her eyes were full of confusion, but changed to happiness when I smiled. “Thank you.” “Of course, Sophie. This is how it’s going to be from now on. I’ll get you whatever you want. All you have to do is ask,” I replied, looking at the menu once more. A shadow loomed over me, causing me to look up. Sophie was leaning over the table, our noses inches from each other. She lifted her hand up and placed it on my cheek gently, then leaned in, softly connecting her lips with mine. I was surprised, but returned the kiss without hesitation. Then she pulled back and bit her lip. “Thank you.” And then she was silent, looking at the menu again. A different waitress came to our table and clicked her pen open, then got out a notepad. “What can I get you for drinks?” she asked, staring at the both of us with a bored expression. “Water,” Sophie said, without looking up. The waitress nodded and scribbled it down, then looked at me. “The same for me, thanks.” “Alright, I’ll bring those right out for you.” And then she walked away. Sophie had her eyes glued to the menu, refusing to look up. Did the kiss surprise her as much as me? It made me happy that she finally kissed me willingly, but I was also concerned because it looked like it bothered her quite a bit. “Sophie-” “If I got an appetizer would you share it with me?” she interrupted without looking up. I sighed. “Sure.” Obviously she didn’t want to talk about it, so I just stayed silent. The waitress came back with our drinks and placed them on the table. She got out her pen and notepad again, then clicked her pen open. “Okay, have you decided what you would like to eat?” she asked, swaying back and forth while taping her foot slowly. “Can I have some mozzarella sticks with extra marinara, a Philly cheese steak sandwich, and a Caesar salad with extra croutons?” Sophie asked, handing her the menu. It caught me by surprise. Of all the things I knew about Sophie, I never knew she could eat this much- unless it was because I didn’t feed her all this time. I felt horrible and guilty about it. All I was focused on was getting her into Colorado- which I did. “Sure,” the waitress said, scribbling it all down. She turned to me. “And for you?” “The BLT deluxe, no mayo,” I replied, handing her the menu. She took it and nodded, then scribbled on her notepad again. “Okay, it should be out in about fifteen minutes.” And then she was gone again, retreating behind the counter. We waited for five minutes, then the waitress brought out the mozzarella sticks. Sophie dug right in, but I hesitated. She looked at me after eating her third one, and was about to reach for her fourth, but stopped. “What’s wrong?” She asked, a hint of fear in her voice. Her eyes widened suddenly and she put her hands in her lap, avoiding eye contact. “Sorry, do you want any?” “No, it’s fine Sophie,” I reassured her. She reminded me of a little kid, all shy and nervous. I smiled at the thought. She was so cute. “I…” she mumbled. “What is it?” I asked. “I need to use the bathroom.” She looked up at me with pleading eyes. “May I?” She looked nervous, as if she thought I was going to say no. I considered going with her, but something told me I could trust her now. Something told me she was finally excepting that this is the way it was going to be from now on. “Of course, do whatever you need to do. Just hurry back. Our food is coming soon,” I told her, smiling. She looked relieved, and she relaxed. Sliding out of the booth, she leaned over and kissed my cheek softly. “Thank you, again.” And I watched her walk to the other side of the diner and down a tiny hallway where the bathrooms were. Why did she feel the need to ask permission for everything that she did? Of course I wanted to know where she was going, but she didn’t have to ask. Why does she think I would tell her no, unless I knew she was going to try something? I watched the corner for a few more minutes, and I chewed on a mozzarella stick, waiting for her to come back. I jumped when there was a crash from behind the counter. One of the waiters dropped a whole tray of food, causing a huge mess. There was someone crying behind the counter, groaning in pain. “Ow, ow, ow! Jeff, you idiot! Ow, my ankle…” a female voice said. A few people rushed behind the counter, trying to help the girl. “I’m so sorry! Rina, are you okay?” he asked frantically, running his hand through his hair. “Do I look- or even sound- okay?” she yelled at him, followed by another groan. I looked away from the counter to our waitress coming back with three plates of food. She placed them on the table and looked at me with sad eyes. “I’m sorry about this. He’s new.” “It’s fine.” She smiled sadly and walked over to the counter to help the waitress who fell- Rina- get up. I gazed at Sophie’s sandwich, steam coming from it. She still wasn’t back yet. How long does it take for her to go to the bathroom? Was she okay? A thought went through my mind, but I quickly tried to pushed it away. It was nonsense, but I wondered anyway. Was she even here? -------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------

Sophia: I can’t believe I actually kissed him. Why the hell would I do that? Even if I did try and fake it, why did I have to kiss him? That was the last thing in the world that I would want to do. But even so, why did he hesitate? I hoped he believed my performance, or everything would go wrong. I threw water on my face once more and looked in the shiny mirror. I was still in my tank top and flannel pants, but I was wrapped in Ricky’s brown leather jacket. It smelled minty, and almost nice. But it still smelled like him. I took it off and threw it on the other side of the bathroom. I needed to get away. Call for help or something. Sneaking out of the bathroom, I slid along the wall. The bathroom was across from one of the entrances to the kitchen. I tiptoed across the tile floor and gently pushed the door open, peering into an empty kitchen. I slipped inside and let the door swing shut. I slid down to the floor, bringing my knees up to my chest. I put my head in my hands, but didn’t cry. I jumped when I heard the door swing open. I looked up and saw the young waitress come in through the other door to the kitchen. Emily, I think her name was. She saw me and her happy face was immediately filled with concern. “Are you okay?” she asked me, coming closer. I shushed her and grabbed her wrist, pulling her down. She kneeled next to me, confused. “What’s wrong?” “I’ve been kidnapped. I need a phone, please . Hurry, I don’t have much time left,” I told her, beginning to panic. I’ve been gone for more than five minutes now. Surely he was going to become suspicious. I saw Emily nod and pull out a cell phone from her pocket. She handed it to me and turned her head to look behind her, then looked at me again. “That guy you were with. He kidnapped you?” she asked, looking worried. I nodded, dialing 911. She stared at me, then nodded understandingly. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you. Just stay here,” she whispered, getting back up. The phone rang a few times, and I waited anxiously. “Thank you,” I whispered. “No problem,” she said. She shook her head and put on her happy face again. It looked pretty real, but I knew she was faking. She nodded at me and walked out of the kitchen. I sighed in relief when I heard a voice on the other side of the phone. “911, what’s your emergency?” “Yes, hello, my name is Sophia Anderson. I’ve been kidnapped and I need help,” I whispered urgently into the phone. “What’s your location?” the man said. “I’m at a diner in-” I jumped and whipped my head when there was a loud crash of plates from over the kitchen counter. Voices came after that; a bunch of yelling and concerned voices. I was beginning to panic. What if Ricky saw me talking on the phone? “Are you okay? Do you need an ambulance?” the man asked. “I don’t know, maybe. Just please hurry! I’m in a diner in Colorado. I don’t know my exact location, just please hurry!” “Okay, we’re dispatching officers to your location. Please stay on the line,” he said. “Okay, thank you.” “Sophie?” I froze when I heard Ricky’s voice on the other side of the door. He knocked on the bathroom door, calling my name multiple times. I quickly got up and ran behind one of the silver storages for cans. “Hurry, please,” I whispered into the phone, sliding down to the cold tile. I heard the kitchen door swing open, followed by the footsteps of boots. I tensed, not daring to turn around and look at who it was, even though I could guess it was Ricky. His footsteps came closer and closer. I closed my eyes, hoping he wouldn’t find me. Suddenly the other kitchen door swung open, followed by quieter footsteps. “Sir, you can’t be in here. I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” It as Emily. There was a hint of fear in her voice, but only because she knew who Ricky really was. I heard Ricky sigh, then grow angry. “I’m looking for my girlfriend. Have you seen the girl I walked in here with?” he asked, voice full of frustration. “You mean that pretty brunette girl? Yeah, she went out the back door a few minutes ago,” Emily said. If I could, I would jump up and hug her right now. She was an excellent liar. “God dammit!” Ricky screamed, kicking one of the stoves. I heard Emily gasp in surprise. “Sir, what’s wrong? Is everything okay?” Ricky didn’t respond. He just ran out of the kitchen, making the door hit the wall with so much force it echoed throughout the restaurant. I sighed in sudden relief, then jumped when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to see Emily kneeling next to me, smiling triumphantly. “Thank you, Emily,” I said, hugging her. “No problem,” she told he, returning the hug. “My name’s Sophie,” I told her. I wasn’t sure why I told her, but I wanted her to know. “Okay, well we need to get you out of here, Sophie. Hopefully he-” She was cut off when the kitchen door swung open again, followed by heavy footsteps. We both gasped silently, and I held her wrist tightly. “Sophie, I know you’re in here. Come out now!” Ricky screamed. Emily went to stand up, but I held her down, shaking my head frantically. “I’ll be fine,” she whispered. I watched as she stood up and walked around the shelves for the cans. “Bitch, you lied to me. Where is she?” I heard Ricky yell at Emily. “Sir, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Now please get out of the kitchen before I call the police,” Emily said bravely. Ricky sighed in frustration, then hit the table. I heard Emily gasp and saw her back up. She motioned for me to move away quickly. Hopefully Ricky didn’t see it, or it was all over. He would kill Emily for sure. I scooted away quietly, moving behind a silver table. I got a clear view of Ricky and Emily from where I was, but they wouldn’t be able to see me. I watched in horror as Ricky reached into his pocket and pull out a knife. Emily took a step back, her face suddenly full of fear. “Tell me where she is!” Ricky screamed. “I don’t know, sir! I told you I saw her run out the back door! She was crying! When I tried to ask her what was wrong she pushed me against the wall and ran out the door!” Emily yelled back, trying to defend herself. “You’re a liar!” “I promise sir! Please, put the knife away! I’m going to call the police!” I watched in horror as Ricky moved forward with the knife, trying to stab Emily. She moved away quickly with a gasp, then grabbed one of the cans off of the shelf and hurled it at him. It his Ricky with a thud, but didn’t seem to stop him. Emily ran to the side and around the shelves, heading for the door. But Ricky was faster. He grabbed her by the hair and pulled her back. She cried out in pain and fell backwards, hitting one of the silver tables. I gasped, putting my hand to my mouth, as Ricky plunged the knife into her stomach. Blood came trickling out of her mouth, her eyes wide and full of fear. Ricky pulled the knife out, letting her drop to the floor, then wiped off the knife. I felt the tears well up in my eyes. I blinked, wishing I could get the images out of my head. I remembered that I still had the operator on the phone. Putting the phone back to my ear, I spoke quietly. “Hello?” I whispered, still watching Ricky. Emily was on the floor, eyes closed. A pool of blood began to surround her body. I could see her chest just faintly rising and falling. She was still alive. “Yes ma’am. I’m here,” the man said. “He’s taking me to Blanca Peak, in an isolated cabin up in the mountains. If I’m not at the diner then-” I cried out when I was pulled up by my hair. Opening my eyes, I saw Ricky’s angry face staring into mine. “Please help me!” I screamed into the phone. Ricky knocked it out of my hand, sending it flying onto a stove. It broke in two as it hit the hard, silver surface. Ricky let go of my hair, making me drop to the tile. “I trusted you, Sophie! Why would you do this to me?” he yelled. “Because I don’t want this!” I yelled, staring at the floor. “But you need me, Sophie!” “I don’t want you! I’ve never wanted you!” I felt a sharp pain pierce my neck, then a liquid being injected into my body. I suddenly felt dizzy, then sleepy. “What… what…” I mumbled, beginning to lose consciousness. “I’m sorry, Sophie. But I have to do this,” he said, removing whatever he had in my neck. I fell to the floor, then felt him pick me up. I looked up to see his face, blurry and distorted. He carried me out of the kitchen and away from the dining room, out the back door. I was immediately shivering, and almost regretted leaving his jacket in the corner of the bathroom. I heard the sirens of the police cars in the distance. Ricky walked faster, making it to the SUV and placing me in the back seat. I was still conscious, but my body felt numb, and almost paralyzed. I couldn’t speak or move. Ricky shut the door and turned on the car, then drove out of the parking lot. The last thing I remember was Ricky speeding down the highway, and other cars honking at him. Then I finally fell into a deep, unconscious state. -----------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 22 Ricky: I can’t believe I trusted her! I’m such an idiot! She called the police, and I had to stab that stupid waitress. I raced down the highway, weaving through the traffic. Cars honked and moved out of the way. There were sirens close behind me, and getting closer. The sun was going down fast, and it was getting darker. I needed to get Sophie to the cabin. Without anyone knowing where she was. I took a glance behind me, looking at Sophie’s unconscious body in the backseat. She didn’t look peaceful like all of the other times. She looked like she was having another nightmare. I turned back to the road and weaved past some slow cars. I spotted the exit that I had to get off of and turned onto the ramp. The sirens were beginning to fade. I sighed in relief, then slowed the car down. In the distance, I could see the outline of Blanca Peak. The moon was rising, and I could no longer see the sun. After another hour of driving, I got further and further away from civilization. I turned down a dirt road and began going up the mountain. I passed no other car as I took turn after turn, swerving up the mountain. I caught sight of the hidden gravel road in the side of the mountain that led to the cabin. I turned sharply and slowed the car, going along the gravel path. A few minutes later, I saw the huge cabin. It was near one of the cliffs on the side of the mountain. It was completely made out of wood, despite the furniture inside. I parked the car, and then carried Sophie out of the backseat to the front door. I struggled getting the door unlocked, but once I got inside, I took Sophie to our room. I set her down gently, then pulled the blanket over her body. Sleep was finally catching up to me, so I pulled off my shirt, kicked off my shoes, and settled down on the other side next to her. She wouldn’t wake up for a while, considering I drugged her. I turned her to face me so I could stare at her, stroking her cheek. I kissed her, then whispered goodnight into her ear. She stirred, but didn’t wake up. Soon I fell into a deep sleep, just like her. -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 23 Sophia: I woke in darkness, gazing up at an unfamiliar ceiling. I was in a strange bed, covered by a soft blanket. I looked around at the wooden walls and floors. I was in a bedroom, but who’s? I looked to my left and gasped. Ricky was asleep next to me, snoring softly. I remembered the diner, what he did… And Emily. Was she okay? She risked her life for me, and I just left her there, bleeding helplessly on the cold floor. I remembered calling the police, and telling them where I might be if I wasn’t at the diner. Was I even at Blanca Peak? Or did Ricky take me somewhere else? I prayed to God he didn’t. Slowly, I removed the blanket from me and stepped out of the bed. He stirred, and I help my breath. He didn’t wake up, to my relief. I tiptoed to the door and opened it, holding my breath when it squeaked. He still didn’t wake up, so I slipped out of the room and into a hallway. I closed the door and walked quickly into a living room. The couch was a deep green cover, and the rugs were a deep brown color. The walls and floors were all wooden, even when I walked into the kitchen. I searched the drawers, but couldn’t find anything I could use as a weapon. My stomach growled loudly, and I remembered I hadn’t eaten anything except a few mozzarella sticks at the diner. I tried to ignore it and continued to search for something I could use as a weapon. “Sophie, what are you doing?” I jumped and turned, pressing my back into the counter, edging away from him. “Get away from me,” I said, going around a table and putting a bigger distance in between us. He stepped closer until he was next to the table, then he placed his palms on the surface, leaning closer to me. “Why did you do that to me, Sophie? I thought you were beginning to learn that this is the way it’s going to be,” he said in a hurt voice. His eyes were cold and harsh, and his voice matched it. “Now come back to bed.” “No,” I said, shaking my head. “Sophie,” he said, softening his voice. He tried to put on a smile, but I knew it was forced. “It’s our first night together. We need to celebrate.” “No!” I shouted at him. He was not doing this to me again. I couldn’t let him. “I’m not letting you do that to me again!” With lightning speed he came around the table and grabbed me by the neck. I coughed and placed my hands on his wrist, trying to get him away from me. But he wouldn’t loosen his grasp on me. He dragged me back down the hallway and into the room. I kicked and screamed, but he didn’t let go. He threw me on the bed and closed the door, locking it behind him. “No, please, don’t do this again,” I begged, scrambling off the bed. “I thought you loved me!” He froze, but then shook his head. “And I thought you loved me.” I was taken by surprise. This was the first time he believed that I didn’t love him. It looks like my little act wouldn’t work anymore. He got closer and closer to me, and I felt like giving up. But I knew this couldn’t happen to me again. “I love you, just please don’t do this,” I begged, sliding down into the corner of the room. “No, you don’t. But you will.” He smacked me, and my cheek stung in pain. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me up, dragging me back over to the bed. Memories of the beach house played through my mind over and over, and I began to cry. I wanted Justin, I wanted Naomi and Kodiak, I wanted my mom and Darius. I didn’t want him. I didn’t want to be here. He put me on the bed again, but I kept fighting back. He slapped me again, harder this time. I stopped struggling, finally giving up. I knew I wouldn’t win; he was stronger than me. I cried myself to sleep that night, knowing I would never forget this anytime soon. ------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------- ----

Chapter 24 Sophia: I laid in the bed, curled up and crying in pain. My whole body was sore and throbbing. Ricky was behind me, gently running his finger from my shoulder to my elbow, and back again. Every time I scooted away from him, he would pull me back violently. I learned to just stay where I was and put up with it. “I’ll never forgive you for this,” I whispered, not bothering to look at him. He laughed and continued to trace my shoulder. “It’s okay, Sophie. There’s nothing to forgive. I’m not sorry for what I did.” I could hear him smiling as he laughed. I was burning with rage, but tried not to show it. I sat up and swung my legs off of the bed, and in an instant he wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me away from the edge. “You’re not going anywhere.” “Not even to the bathroom?” He thought for a moment, then let me go. “You have two minutes.” Sighing, I got up from the bed and crossed the room to the bathroom. I closed the door behind me, then locked it. I sat on the counter, putting my head in my hands and softly crying. I heard a knock at the door, followed by Ricky’s gentle voice. “Sophie? Are you okay?” I wiped the tears from my eyes and cheeks and picked my head up, trying to sound normal. “No,” I said, my voice cracking. “Sophie, come out.” There was a warning in his voice, causing me to shake slightly. I walked over to the door and unlocked it, then opened it a little. “What do you want?” I asked, not making eye contact. He put his hand on the door and pushed it open all the way. He then brought me into his arms, and I had to force myself not to push away. “You’ll get used to it, Sophie. I promise,” he whispered into my hair. He kissed the top of my head and continued hugging me. “That’s what you said last time. I’ll never get used to this,” I blurted out before I could stop myself. He tightened his grip around me, making it hard to breathe. “You will get used to this, Sophie. There’s no running away this time. We’re over a hundred miles away from civilization. There isn’t anywhere to go for you.” “I don’t care. I’ll never get used to this,” I repeated. I finally had enough and placed my hands on his bare chest, then shoved, pushing him away from me. He was caught off guard and he stumbled backwards, falling onto the bed. I backed up unto the bathroom and closed it, then quickly locked it before he could open it. Seconds later he was pounding at the door, but I stayed where I was, standing in the middle of the bathroom, watching the door. I didn’t even blink when he pounded on it; I just watched. The wood began to split, and the he barged in. The wooden door was separated from its hinges, lying on the floor of the bathroom. He walked over to me and slapped me, but I did nothing about it. He gripped both of my arms and squeezed tightly, and I winced slightly, not making any eye contact with him. “Why do you have to be so difficult?” he yelled. I didn’t answer him; I just kept looking at the ground. “Answer me, Sophie!” Silence. “Sophie!” Another smack, but I still didn’t speak. “God dammit, Sophie! Speak to me!” I finally felt a wave of anger wash through me. Anger burning in my eyes, I snapped my head up to look at him. He was taken by surprise, but held eye contact. “Get off of me!” I pushed at him again and he let go. He didn’t come at me again, to my relief. “The reason I won’t talk to you is because no matter what I say, no matter what I want, you still get things your way! If it’s not your way, you hit me! You call that love, Ricky? Raping me once again, giving me bruises and smacking me across the face do hard you leave marks?” He stood there, shocked and hurt, but I knew he also felt guilty as everything I said sunk in. I took a deep breath and continued. “That’s not love, Ricky! I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve told you that! You just don’t seem to listen to me, the person you claim to ‘ love ’!” I yelled, putting air quotes around the last word. “Let me just inform you right now that I will never, and I repeat never love you! The only person I will ever love is Justin! He actually cares about me, and doesn’t hurt others I care about. You need to get a life, Ricky, and maybe some common sense while you’re at it. You’ve been doing this to me for over a year! Give up already! Get a clue!” I stopped yelling and stood there, panting. I couldn’t believe I just said all of that stuff to him, but I did, and there was no taking it back. I watched his eyes grow from surprised to cold and filled with hatred. “Sophie…” he said. “I never wanted to do this. I really hoped it wouldn’t have come to this. But you’ve made it clear.” He took a deep breath. “You’re not the one.” ------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------- --

Chapter 25 Sophia: I gasped, taking a step back. I wasn’t the one? What did that mean, exactly? I watched as he slowly stepped away from me and out of the bathroom. I walked to the doorway and peeked out into the bedroom. Ricky wasn’t anywhere in sight. Where did he go? My whole body tensed, wondering what he was going to do. I stepped into the bedroom and stood there, looking around. I finally walked across the room and opened the bedroom door, peering out into the dark hallway. I listened, but couldn’t hear anything. Stepping out into the hallway, I walked down until I was in the living room. Ricky was in the kitchen, leaning against the counter with his head in his hands. I stood in the middle of the living room, staring at him. “Why?” I asked him. “Because I loved you.” “No, you didn’t.” “Yes, I did. But now I know you’re not the one.” “So you don’t love me anymore?” “No.” His voice was filled with regret and anger. “I don’t know. How can I love someone who doesn’t love me back?” “How can you expect me to love you when you did all of that horrible stuff? You killed all of those innocent girls.” His head snapped up and he glared at me. “Don’t talk about them. They faked their love. I had no choice.” “Yes, you did,” I replied calmly. “Why didn’t you kill me when I told you I didn’t love you?” I need to know why. I desperately needed to know. “I wanted to.” My blood ran cold. “You did?” I whispered. “I want to.” “What?” My voice became frantic. He wants to? “So you say you love me, and then say you want to kill me?” “You’re not the one, Sophie,” he said, turning away from me. He reached onto of the fridge and pulled a knife off of it. I gasped and took a step back, watching him take the cover off. He looked at me. His face was streaked with tears. I knew he didn’t want to, it was obvious enough. But something told me he felt like he had to. “You don’t want to do this,” I said, stepping away from him. “Yes I do.” His voice was no longer filled with sadness. Instead it was replaced with hatred and guilt. “You’ve made it clear that you are not the one.” He stepped closer to me and held the knife at his side. He stared at me, then started closing the distance. I ran around the couch, trying to get away from him. He watched me run down the hall, following slowly behind me. I turned into one of the first rooms I saw, opening the door and shutting it behind me. I locked the door and turned around. The room was full of boxes, stacked up to the ceiling. I jumped when I heard the knob shake, then the sound of the knife piercing the wood. He was stabbing the door. I began looking through the boxes, pulling them down and searching for a weapon. Most of them were full of clothes, all different sizes. And all for girls. I ignored it and kept searching. I eventually got to a box that was heavier than all of the others; it was in the corner of the room, away from all of the others. I opened it and gazed inside, gasping. There was a photo album labeled Sophie. I carefully picked it up and opened it. Inside were pictures of me, taken without my knowing. Some were of me and my friends, and others were just of me. There was one that caught my eye immediately, shocking me. It was a picture of me outside of the movie theater, laughing with my old friends. I jumped when I heard some of the wood split. I was running out of time. I closed the photo album and gazed back into the box. There was small knife at the bottom of the box, covered in dry blood. Other stuff was in the box, like my old hair brush, and one of my old bottles of lip gloss. A shiver went down my spine. He collected my stuff. And he kept the knife he had used to stab Naomi and Darius with. And tried to kill me with. I didn’t want to pick it up, but I knew I had no choice. I picked it up and spun around just as Ricky broke through the door. He walked in the room, knife by his side, eyes cold and emotionless. I pointed the old knife at him, and he froze, surprise flickering in his eyes. But it only lasted for a moment. He continued crossing the room slowly, and I held the knife higher. “I don’t want to hurt you, Ricky. Don’t come any closer,” I said. My hands were trembling, making it hard for me to hold onto the knife. He stopped a few feet away from me, then held up his free hand, slapping the knife out of my hands. The knife flew across the room, behind some boxes. I quickly dove for it, but Ricky tackled me and pinned me to the floor. I struggled, but knew it was no use. He was too heavy. He twisted me around so I was facing him. I stared up into his eyes, but never cried. He placed the knife to my neck, but hesitated. “Don’t do this,” I begged. He stared down at me, guilt showing in his eyes. “I’m sorry, Sophie. I love you, but you will never understand. You don’t love me,” he said. A tear escaped his eye and fell onto my cheek. I took my chance and brought my knee up in between his legs. He grunted and fell sideways, losing his grip on the knife. I grabbed it before he could and backed away from him, holding it up in defense. He recovered quickly and came at me, his eyes crazed and full of longing. “Ricky don’t, please!” I cried. But he came at me, giving me no choice. I moved forward, plunging the knife into his chest. He didn’t give up though. “No, we will die together!” he choked out, grabbing my neck and squeezing. “No, we won’t!” I winced, pulling the knife out and stabbing him again. He kept his hold on my neck, so I stabbed him again. He spit blood out of his mouth, making the warm liquid spray all over my face. I stabbed him again, and again, and again, until his grip on my loosened. He fell backwards and onto the wooden ground. But I didn’t stop stabbing him. I pulled the knife out and plunged it back into him over and over again, not paying attention to what was going on around me. I finally stopped when I heard him whisper my name, freezing as I was about to stab him again. I looked at his face, and he looked back. Blood was trickling out of his mouth and his eyes glistened with tears. “I will always love you, my beautiful Sophie,” he whispered faintly. I widened my eyes as he brought his hand up to meet my cheek, but he never made it even halfway. His hand dropped to the ground, splashing into the dark-red pool of blood surrounding his body. I didn’t even notice I was crying until the tears fell onto him. I watched as his chest finally stopped rising and falling, and he closed his eyes with a faint sigh. I cried onto his chest, still holding the knife in my hands. My clothes and face were covered in his blood. “I’m so sorry,” I whispered. Even after all that he did to me, I felt a part of me die inside. I wouldn’t miss him, but I knew I would never forget him. I didn’t even notice when the flashlight traveled over our bodies. I heard food steps echoing throughout the house. “I’ve got her!” a man yelled. He ran over to me and put his gun behind him, then helped me up. He tried to calm me down as he led me out of the room. Others passed me and went into the room, and I stopped, turning around. I watched as they checked Ricky’s pulse, confirming he was dead. “I had to,” I whispered to no one. The man turned me away, but I refused to go with him. I kept staring at Ricky, feeling like a part of me had died. But I knew I had to kill him. I knew he wanted me to kill him. He loved me, and I believed that much. He truly loved me, and I realized at that moment, I had begun to care for him. I turned away from the officer and walked back into the room. I kneeled down beside Ricky, ignoring the stares and warning from the men surrounding me. I lowered my head and placed my hand gently on his cheek. Tears fell onto his face, and I closed my eyes, lowered my head and bringing my lips to his. Despite everything that happened, I knew he deserved this much. “I’m sorry,” I whispered to him. I knew he couldn’t hear me. He was gone. And never coming back. I finally let the officer lead me out of the room and out of the cabin. He guided me over to the ambulance for the paramedics to look at me. I stared blankly at nothing as they checked me over. They wrapped me in a blanket and left me sitting in the back, my feet dangling a few inches above the ground. Everything went by in a blur, until I saw a familiar face come into view. “Sophie!” Darius ran up to me, giving me a big hug and kissing the top of my head. He pulled away and looked at me, resting his hands on my shoulders. “Are you okay?” “I’m okay,” I smiled weakly at him. “It’s good to see you.” He laughed a little, smiling back. “You’re mother-” “Sophie!” I looked over Darius’s shoulder to see my mom run behind him and give me a huge hug. Darius backed up and let her hug me. I hugged her back, letting her cry on my shoulder. “How’d you guys know I was here?” I wondered. I knew I called the police and told them where I would probably be, but I didn’t know they would inform my mom and Darius. “They called me,” Darius spoke up. “Oh,” was all I said. I looked back at the cabin and watched some people carry out a body. I knew it was Ricky. I began to cry all over again. “I’m sorry, Ricky.” My mother and Darius both hugged me, trying to calm me down. I shook them off and hopped out of the ambulance, racing past them. I stood a few feet away from the people carrying Ricky’s body away and into a truck. I wanted to look at him one last time, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle it. Darius came up behind me and rubbed my shoulders, guiding me back to the ambulance. “Sophie, it’s all over now.” Something about Darius’s words soothed me, and I knew I could believe him. But was this really over? Something told me this would never be over. --------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- ----

Chapter 26 Ricky: I felt the sharp pain over and over as she stabbed me repeatedly. I didn’t try and stop her. I knew this had to come sooner or later. She knew I loved her. I finally let the tears escape my eyes and flow down my face. The blood was trickling out of my mouth, and I could barely speak. “Sophie,” I whispered. She froze, then starred at me, her eyes widening. Her face was wet with tears. “I will always love you, my beautiful Sophie,” I whispered softly. I tried to bring my hand up to touch her one last time, but didn’t have the strength. I let my hand fall again and give a sigh, closing my eyes. I don’t regret anything. I loved Sophie with all of my heart. I believed she would miss me, even after all I did. I heard her muffled sobs as she put her head to my chest. I love you, Sophia Anderson. And I will never forget you. You are my everything, and always will be. Never forget me after I die. I want you to remember my love for you, and how I would have never killed you. I only did this because I knew it was time for me to go. But I knew only you could do it. Only you could kill me. And that’s okay. Just remember that I will always love you. Hopefully we will see each other soon. Never forget me, my love. My beautiful Sophia. I let my breathing slow, and I finally gave into the darkness that slowly crept up on me. I pictured her smile one last time. I would die peacefully knowing she would be okay. My beautiful Sophia. --------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------- - Again, I cried while writing this. I never wanted Ricky to die, but I knew it would always have to come to this. sorry to all of you Ricky lovers.

Epilogue Sophia: I stared at the bed of puppies, watching them crawl around Naomi. I laughed as she tried to get them all towards her. Kodiak was lying beside her, gazing down at the puppies as well. He looked proud, and I knew he was. Justin rubbed my shoulder and looked at me, smiling. “What should we name them?” he asked. I looked down at them. There were nine puppies, one of them being a runt. The runt of the litter was a tiny baby girl, with brown and white fur. She looked nothing like her parents, or not yet at least. She nuzzled up against Naomi, trying to get warm. Naomi licked her, trying to get her clean. I smiled, knowing her name immediately. “Her name will be Lily,” I said, pointing to the tiny puppy. Justin smiled at me, nodding his head in agreement. “Okay, but only if his name can be Koda,” he said, pointing to one of the largest males of the litter. I laughed and hugged him. “Okay, it’s a deal,” I said. We spent the rest of the night naming the puppies, all of which Naomi and Kodiak seemed to agree on. All of a sudden I felt the urge to throw up, so I ran to the bathroom and sat down by the toilet. Justin ran in after me and held up my hair. “Sophie, what’s wrong?” he asked, concern covering his face. When I didn’t answer him, he just rubbed my back and kept holding up my hair. When the feeling passed, I finally looked at him. I couldn’t hide it from him anymore. He had the right to know. “Justin,” I whispered, looking into his eyes. He gazed back, eyes full of worry and concern. “What’s wrong, Sophie? Are you sick?” “No,” I said turning away from him. He placed his finger under my chin and turned my head back towards him. “What’s wrong?” “Justin,” I said, not wanting to cry. “I’m pregnant.” His eyes widened with shock. “But we…” “I know,” I paused, gazing into his eyes. “It’s Ricky’s.” --------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------

The doctor handed the bundle of blankets to me, along with the screaming baby inside them. I was panting and breathing hard, trying to catch my breath. My mom was next to me, rubbing my shoulder. Justin was on the other side, kissing my forehead multiple times. “You did good, honey,” my mother said, gazing down at the bundle in my arms. “She’s beautiful,” Justin whispered, gently touching the tiny girl’s cheek. I nodded in agreement, too out of breath to speak. I gazed down at the little girl calmly, and she stared back. She was beautiful. And looked just like Ricky. Those same blue eyes that I saw almost a year ago were gazing up at me. And I loved them. I loved her. “I love you, my beautiful baby girl,” I whispered, bringing her closer to me. She began crying again, and I shushed her gently. “It’s okay.” “Welcome to the world,” my mother whispered, patting her back softly. The doctor was at my side, smiling down at me and the baby. “Congratulations, Mrs. Reynolds.” “Thank you,” I breathed. He nodded and began checking over the baby. “What will you name her?” Justin whispered into my hair. I thought for a moment. Then I knew. “Emma.” “Emma?” Justin asked. I nodded and he kissed my forehead again. “That’s a beautiful name for a beautiful baby girl.” “Thank you,” I told him, closing my eyes. I was so tired, and all I wanted to do was sleep. “Sophie, you look exhausted. You should sleep,” my mom said. She reached over and tried to take the baby, but I shook my head. “No, I want to sleep with her.” My mom nodded, understanding. “Okay, Sophie. I’ll be out in the hall with Darius,” she said, getting up off of the chair. “Thank you, doctor.” The doctor nodded and continued writing on his clipboard. I looked up Justin, who was smiling down at Emma, gently stroking her head. “Will you love her?” I asked him. He looked at me, surprise flickering in his coffee brown eyes. “Of course I will, Sophie. She may not be my biological daughter, but I will love her like she is my own. I promise, Sophie.” He kissed me, and then gently kissed the top of Emma’s head. I smiled, then finally let sleep begin to take me. Do you see your beautiful baby girl, Ricky? She looks just like you. She has the same blue eyes you had. I’ll love her like you loved me. I’ll take good care of her, I promise. When she’s old enough, I’ll tell her about you, but only the good things. I’ll tell her how much you loved me, and what you did for me. I’ll watch over our baby girl and love her with all of my heart. I finished and then fell into a deep sleep, with my baby girl in my arms.

Una stl dey talk abt story ending, una no knw say ds story jst dey start. Ds is jst d beginning! @mastersam, I no get u at all o. How is it possible for a whole story-teller to die? U don hear am before? Nah him spirit abi ghost come dey narrate d story? Hmmm abeg d person wey dey narrate any story no dey die 4 dt story o. Bcos nah him dey tell d story nah. Since u already knew Ricky was going to die, u should hav made only Sophie d narrator of d story. Well, d story was gr8 and I enjoyed it. Though, I must say that many of d things I expected to hpn never hpnd and so many things I never expected to hpn then hpnd. I never expected Ricky to molest Sophie, neither dd I expect Sophie to kill him. I also never envisaged that Ricky would be a cold blooded killer. Then, I tot at least he was supposed to explain to Sophie why he acted d way he dd, she wasn't supposed to kill him wtout knowing how & why it all started. I also tot he could get a psychiatric help bcos 4rm my own observation, he was mentally unstable. Ds is my own opinion and I knw others hav theirs.
