¤¤PROLOGUE¤¤ It was five days to christmas and the preparation for the much anticipated day(Dec 25th) was in top gear. As companies prepares for their end of the year award dinners, the government were preparing for their end of the year carols, programmes and seminars, schools prepares for end of the year parties and christmas carols, families prepares for the christmas day and other subsequent festivities. The yuletide season of this particular year(2011) was one to remember, as the city of Ibadan lost one of her most illustrous son, Barrister Lekan Agboola. ---------Barrister Lekan Agboola's Bodija residence-- Traditions have been in existence before us, traditions remain even after we have gone and one of the few things that rarely goes into extinction or obscurity remains tradition and culture which is the other part of tradition. The Agboola family comprising of Barrister Lekan Agboola, his wife, Angela and their three children, Samantha, Mike and Matilda always treat themselves to a pre-christmas dinner. The dinner which could pass for a christmas day lunch allowed each member of the family to invite a friend over and the date for the dinner was always on the 20th of December. Even though, Barrister Agboola couldn't get to invite any of his friends over, his wife despite her social status couldn't bring any of her friends, Mike and Matilda schools outside Ibadan(Lagos & Ilorin) their eldest sister, Samantha was running her 9month programme in advanced legal studies at John Hopkins university, and despite this, her boyfriend Raymond was present at the dinner. "Daddy, won't Samantha come home?" Mike asked five minutes into the meal. "She has a few things to round up at school. She'll be home on the 27th." Barrister Agboola replied. "You don't talk while eating." Agboola's wife said. "Even if its an emergency?" Her husband asked. "There is no emergency during meals." She replied and everyone bursted into laughter. As it was no new thing that their mother sees life from an entirely different perspective. "Raymond, you are a politician right?" Barrister Agboola asked his daughter's boyfriend. "Yes dad. I studied political science and I felt I should go into politics." Raymond replied. "Am sure you know how politics is done in this country and Oyo state especially." The popular legal practitioner said. "Of course. I have moved with a couple of experienced politicians and I think I am good to go." Raymond replied. "That's good. Just make sure you try as much as possible to be friends with even the enemies on the other side of the political divide to stay out of trouble. You are a young man, you know?" Barrister Agboola advised. "Noted sir." Raymond replied. The sounds of cutleries hitting the plates and the cups brushing the sides of the plates was all that could be heard until it was time for desert. "Mum! I want more." Matilda, the youngest of the children cried. And just then, the light went off and everywhere went dark. "What's going on?" Barrister Agboola asked bravely. "I don't know." Mike who immediately after the blackout had rushed to the window to see if other houses suffered the same. "We seemed to be the only one in this." He added. "Come with me Raymond." Barrister Agboola said as he walked out of the dinning area with his battery powered torchlight. ------ 7am, the next day. The neighbourhood was thrown into mourning as a special ambulance drove out of the Agboolas compound conveying the corpse of Barrister Agboola, his wife and two children. As well as another ambulance carrying Samantha's boyfriend, Raymond who was in commatose. Will Samantha be able to bear the loss of her loved ones? That's the reason why you have to read this. ¤CHAPTER 1¤ As she stood at the graveside, watching her parents and siblings being buried, the wind blew the skirt of her black suit, moulding it up to her slender hip. A strong hand was wrapped around her shoulder, occassionaly tightening the grip on her shoulder. Hot tears tickled down her cheeks as she watched four gold plated caskets as donated by the state government being lowered, six feets beneathe the earth surface. The thoughts of loosing a loved one could be devastating, but the thought of loosing four at a time and watch them get buried could be more devastating. "Come over here miss." The presiding priest, a white man said to her as she took three steps towards her father's vault. "Here." He stretched a mini spade, which was filled with sand. "A minute please." She requested. "Take all the time you want." The priest replied. Samantha went down on her knees, hovering over her father's casket which was six feets below. As she did this, the memories she had had with her father came rushing in her mind. She remembered how he used to call her the pride of his family. Being the only child of his who followed his footsteps as a lawyer. And he had on countless occassions tipped her to take over the helm of affairs at his private law chamber. "I love you daddy." She said silently. "Rest in peace." She allowed the sand fall off her hand unto the casket. She moved on to her mother's vault. Repeating the same process of hovering over the six feets deep vault. The memories of the times she had had with her mother came flashing. How she was her mother's bestfriend until the birth of Matilda, the last child of the family. She could remember how her mother desperately wanted her to study Nursing in school and how the woman went on the get her an exam form for a school of nursing, but in the end, she followed her father's advice by going for law. She remembered the quarrel that ensued afterwards and how her parents settled their differences and agreed to support her in whatever career choice she made. A fearless woman she called her mother, as she was one of the few women who didn't depend on their husbands for everything. Most especially in the aspect of finance and decision making, her mother scored an 'A.' "I love you mum." She said. This time, tears were rolling down her cheeks like they were meant to. Even though the priest disagreed initially, it took the efforts of family members, friends and sympathysers to convince the priest that Samantha should pay her last repect to her siblings. This singular act made her cry bitterly and everyone joined her, while the few brave men present pacified the wailing women and children as they led them out of the graveyard. The last thing Samantha saw was how the cementary staffs covered each vault with a concrete slab which was plastered with mixed cement. She watched as her father's best friend and partner in the Law business spoke with the staffs and the guards, instructing them on what to do and what not to. Five minutes later, about twenty cars belonging to business men, politicians, Lawyers, family and friends drove out of the cementary. "Everything would be fine." Barrister Salako, her father's best friend assured her as they sped on back to the Agboola's residence. "But, why would anyone want to kill my parents? Kill my siblings?" Samantha cried. "God perfectly understands the situation. He is the only one who could identify the perpetrators of this evil act and that is why we must leave everything to him." Barrister Salako replied. "But God could have averted the death of my family. He is powerful. He can do it." Samantha cried bitterly. "If he had used his powers, I'll be having the christmas celebration of my life with my family. He choosed to allow these people kill my family and yet, you said he is the only one who could help us get those behind the murder..." Samantha poured out. Barrister Salako knowing where her outburst was headed quickly cuts in to prevent her from speaking ill of the most high God. "Ibrahim, step on the gas." Salako said to his driver who increased the car speed immediately. "My dad was not a business man, my mum was not a business woman. If they were, we would have said their partners killed them. And I don't think my dad handled any big case of recent." Samantha continued to talk in soliloqy as the car sped on. Twenty minutes later, Barrister Salako's driver drove and came to a halt inside the Agboola's Bodija residence where several sympathysers were waiting. On sighting the only survivor(Samantha) wailing began afresh much to the chagrin of Barrister Salako. ***

Ep 2 --*-- A black police SUV drove into Barrister Lekan Agboola's residence early tuesday morning, three days after Lekan Agboola, his wife and two children were buried. "You wait here, okay?" Inspector Martins said to the driver. "You, come with me." With these, he led the way towards the front door which was slightly opened and pictures bearing Barrister Agboola and his wife were placed on a stool at the entrance and a condolence register place close to it. "Sir." The junior officer called Martins attention to the register. With a glance backwards, "We have no business with that." Martins led the way into the spacious living room which looked a bit unkept, but there were traces of it being the the process of getting cleaned, as a mop bucket and stick stood at the centre of the living room. And just as he rightly guessed, a young lady of about eighteen ran into the living room, but stopped halfway, horror-struck and shocked as he saw two strangers standing in the room she left minutes ago. "Good morning." Martins greeted the lady. Hearing his domineering voice further made the lady scared as she took two steps backwards. "Go-oooo-g........g....ood mor--ning sir." She replied. "Hey! Don't be scared. We are not zombies or vampires. I am Inspector Martins and here with me is James." Martin said to the girl. Even though hearing one of the intruders talk sort of calmed the girl down, but the fact that they are policemen made her more scared. The aspersion cast about the men of the Nigeria's police force is that, once they show up at you door, accost you on the road or round you up at a robbery scene, party or any public place, one should get his mind prepared that, at least, a night behind the bars is iminent. Seeing the fear in the girl's eyes, Martins decided to come out clean with her. "Fine. We are here to see Miss Samantha Agboola, I believe she lives here?" "Yes sir." And without another word, the girl sped out of the living room. A minute later, Samantha led the way into the living room with sleepy eyes and still dressed in her nighties. "Good morning sirs." She greeted the two men respectfully. Even if the younger of the men looked twenty four or twenty five, the fact that the older looked thirty made her give utmost respect to them. "Miss Samantha Agboola. I am Inspector Martins, and with me here is James. I am the officer in charge of your parents and siblings case." Martins said flashing his Identity card. "First of all, accept my condolence and I pray God grants you the fortitude to bear the loss." He prayed. "Amen, thank you very much." Samantha said. "Have your sits." She pointed to the empty two seater couch which the two men occupied comfortably while she sat opposite them. "We were here on saturday, but Barrister Salako said you just returned from paying your last respect to the dead, so we decided to give you space. We ought to give you more time, but delay is dangerous and if we ever want to get to the root of this matter, we need to swing into action immediately." Martins explained. "And hopefully, you will cooperate with us by answering all our questions. Won't you?" He added. "Of course I will." Samantha replied with a smiled. "One minute please, let me change into something decent." "Go ahead." And without another word, she strolled out of the living room leaving the two police officers and the eighteen year old girl. "What's your name?" Martins asked the agitated young lady. "Doris." She replied. "What's your relationship with Samantha?" "She is my cousin." ***

Ep 3 --*-- Samantha returned few minutes later now dressed in a black top and a blue knee length jean trouser. "Sorry for the delay." She said as she took her sit whispering into her cousin's ear who immediately stood up and left the living room. "Its not a problem at all." Martins replied. "What would you like to drink? I hope fruit juice is not bad for men?" she asked laughing as the two men joined seconds later once they got a hang of the joke. A minute later, the young lady returned with a pack of fruit juice and two glass cups for the men. She subsequently opened the juice and poured their glasses full. "Can you please excuse us." Martins said to Doris. "No, she can stay with us. She is my cousin and can be trusted." Samantha disagreed. "I understand, but in this case, she has to excuse us. She has no business with what we are about to discuss, hence, she has to excuse us." Martins explained. "Okay." And without another word, Doris stood up and exited the living room. Sure that she was away from hearshot, Martins began his questioning. "Once again Am very sorry about your family." He said. "Thank you sir." Samantha replied. "Do you reckon your late father being a lwyer handling any case before his death? We learnt you are his confidant." He asked. "Truth be told, I was my father's confidanct before his death. He tells me about all of his cases and the applications he intends to use. He allowed me to handle some, I send my application and resolve to him, he rates my performance and he corrects my wrongs. He sends footages from his court activities to me so I can learn, but he didn't tell me anything in the past month." Samantha replied. "Did you ask why?" Martins asked. "No. I just felt since it is christmas, he probably might not want to take cases." "And in November prior to December?" Martins asked. "He handled several cases in November. Some completed and judged, others annuled and a few adjourned." She replied. "The major ones." Martins said jotting down only God knows what in his notepad. "He handled a drug case which he lost as the defendant, he told me about a case involving a certain politician currently in office, but he said he would be pursuing the case at the turn of the year, even though he didn't tell me which politician is involved." Samantha explained. "Fine, did he tell you about his bid to become the NBA chairman, the south west chapter?" Martins asked. "Yes sir he did. But he is contesting the position against his friend Barrister Salako." She replied. "Any chance that there was a power tussle or anything between them?" Martins asked. Knowing where the conversation was heading. "Excuse me Mister, my dad was killed we all know that, but not by his friend. What's the hype about being the NBA chairman? They have been friends since as far back as I could remember. Even before I was born, so rule it out that Barrister Salako killed him." Samantha poured out angrily. "I usnderstand your point, but you know, this is my job and I am an expert with my job. Am not saying Barrister killed your father. Someone could on his behalf. But, that's not what am saying here. Every question asked here today was meant to serve a purpose and if we are to achieve anything from this session, I advice you to answer every of my questions." Martins explained. "I need some time alone." She blurted out rather too sudden and unexpected. "What?" Martins asked. "I want you to leave." She said laying emphasis on each letters in each word. "Alright. I understand your situation. We'll be back some other time to continue from where we stopped." Martins said rising to his feet, his partner, James doing the same. "Better." Samantha said rising up too. "Shut the door on your way out." She instructed before walking out of the living room. ***

--*-- ONE WEEK LATER Venue: The Nigeria Bar Association south west secretariat It was another time of the month for the once in a month general meeting involving every member of the NBA. The South west chapter of the association was one of the biggest as the south west boast of many established lawyers and law chambers. And today's meeting just like the previous two was presided over by the secretary general of the association in the absence of a recognized president of the association whose elective tenure expired four months ago and upon expiration, he was mandated to vacate office with immediate effect, and the meeting for the following month was presided over by the Secretary general where interested individuals make known their aspiration to contest. The next meeting after the aspiation will be the election week which was always December so a new president would be inaugurated in January. But unfortunately, one of the aspirants, Barrister Lekan Balogun was murdered alongside his family three days before the association's election. And here they(the NBA) are today having the first meeting of the year. The meeting which began two hours ago had touched various key and functionary areas and the curtain has been drawn on that. Now is the time for suggestion and complaints. Several hands were up, but the eagle eyed secretary general spotted Barrister Salako's raised hand and urged him to make his suggestion. "Permit me to stand on existing protocol. Comrades, I think to avoid change in association calendar in the new year, we should get a new governing body inaugurated." He began. "Instead of setting aside two months for election and inauguration, we could have both on the same meeting day." He paused and watched the reaction of everyone in the hall. "The calendar drawn for the year states that, in every month of the year, there is at least one new activity, meaning, if we decide to ignore elections this month, we will end up having so many emergency meetings which will result in many of us missing out on such meetings should we have sessions in court. I strongly admonish the governing body to let us vote our leaders today." He sat down. The secretary general cleared his throat. "Thank you barrister." He began. "I think the reason why we decided not to stage elections this month iss because we felt we should respect the soul of the departed. One of us died last month, and dedicating two months to him is the least we could do. I know if it were to be someone else, Barrister Agboola will move that there shouldn't be meetings at all for those two months. Such was the man being celebrated. And without the incidence of death, Agboola would have contested the presidency of this association. So, I think suspending the election shows our maximum respect to the dead." Salako looked round the hall for support, but none could be gotten, because, everyone seemed to have their attention on the intelligent Secretary. "Okay, lets do it like this. If you support Barrister's motion lets have our hands up. If you support my motion, lets remain indifferent." The secretary said. "Someone do the counting." Minutes later, figures were presented to the secretary where it was clear that eighty five percent of the meeting supported the secretary. "With this, I can authoritatively say that elections will hold next month and inauguration follows immediately. Interested aspirants can make their intentions known today." The secretary gave his verdict. "Thank you Barrister." ****

--*-- Since the death of Barrister Lekan, his wife and two children, friends, relatives and acquaintances have abandoned the only survivor of the family, Samantha. Aside Barrister Salako who was Barrister Lekan Agboola's best friend who made it a point of duty to visit his late friend's surviving daughter twice in a week and calling her in the morning and late in the night. And the family doctor who was always popping up to see how Samantha was faring and checking how well she was taking the whole situation, her blood pressure to mention a few. Another person who didn't neglect her was their church pastor. Even though she didn't know the pastor, as she was in America when the former residence pastor was transferred and a new pastor brought in. But despite that, the pastor would still visit, sometimes alone and other times with a church worker or more or the church elders. The last person on the list of thos who didn't neglect her was Doris, her cousin. The eighteen year old student of the university of Ibadan. Even though, a month after the death of her family, Doris's father(Samantha's uncle) barred his daughter from nearing Samantha. But all these fell on deaf ears. Doris, a non campus student of the university of Ibadan who was always driven to school every morning and allowed to find her way home in the afternoon would most of the time stop by at Barrister Lekan Agboola's residence to spend quality time with Samantha. As friends and relatives deserted Samantha, workers and staffs deserted her. Aside the gateman who was murdered on the night when her family was murdered, the other staffs(the gardener, the cook and the cleaners) who lived in the boy's quaters at the back of the main building had all taken to their heels, because they were afraid of death. But suprisingly, one of the staffs opted to stay, the driver. "Just look for somewhere to park." She told the driver who was confused as to where to park the car. After almost thirty seconds of trying to park the car, he finally got and empty parking space. "Are you going to come with me or you'll wait in the car?" Samantha asked. "No madam. Hungry dey worry me sef. I will go and eat, and I hate how hospital smells." He replied. "Okay. Just don't stay long." And with this, Samantha picked her small handbag and a bouquet of flower which was sitting beside her at the backseat of the car. ---------- As she ascended the staircase, her bag and bouquet in her hand, she bumped into a very huge body frame which sent her flying down the stairs. "Oh my God! Am very sorry." The huge framed man said as he quickly made to assist the young lady who just fell to the ground. "Did I hurt you?" He asked. "No, am fine." Samantha replied angrily. She could feel her wrist burning in pain, but it is unheard of for a grown up lady to cry in situations like this. "Oh my God! Samantha." The huge framed man said. "Inspector Martin." Samantha replied in shock. Since their last meeting, she felt she would never see him again. Not after asking him to leave, she felt she had offended him and as such, he(Martin) might decide not to help her on the case anymore. "What are you doing here?" She asked. "Oh! Its my kid brother who drove himself into a ditch." Martin replied. "Oh my God! Hope its not too much sha? She asked. "Not really, just a couple of bruises. Even though he broke an arm." Martins replied. "How about you?" "My boyfriend is here..." "Raymond right?" Martins asked. She nodded her head in affirmation. By now, the pain in her wrist had subsided. "I can see you are okay now. Would you be available for an hour anytime this week? I have some questions for you." Martins asked. Even though she wouldn't available as she was expected to resume as a full time lawyer in her father and Salako's jointly owned law firm, she still felt she was indebted to the police officer, hence, her decision to make out time for him. "I'll be available." She replied. "Fine. I'll be there on thursday." He said as he took her number and gave her his. "Do you mind if I walk you?" "At all." And together they left for the Intensive care where Raymond still lay in comma. ****

--*-- The household of Engineer Emmanuel Agboola has been smoking hot since the start of the day when Engr' Emma announced to his wife and only daughter, Doris that he would be attending a societal function later in the day. And his wife reminded him of the fact they were still mourning the death of his elder brother and his family, but Engineer Emma said he had done enough mourning and it was time for him to hit the town and get his groove back. All hell was let loose as his wife vowed that he would go nowhere. "Woman, if you don't release your grip on my shirt, I'll be forced to hit you." He warned his wife. "Only an irresponsible man hit his wife. Do your worst, there is no way I am allowing you to leave this house today. You brother died not up to a month and you are begining to go to parties. Don't you have feelings?" His wife poured out angrily. "What do you want me to do now?" Engineer Emma asked. "Give respect to the dead. Mourn them for at least a month without going to parties or any place of celebration. Then after one month, you can do whatever you like, I am less concerned." His wife explained. "If the neighbours or anybody sees you in a party now, what do you think they'll think of you?" She added. "I don't care what the neighbours think. They can go and die for all I care." He replied. "Will my mourning Lekan and his family for a month raise them back to life? Does that guarantee them a place in paradise. I am a living soul, I have no business whatsoever with the dead." Engineer Emma explained. "Are you human at all?" She asked, almost in tears. And without warning, Engineer Emma pushed his wife violenly which resulted in her fall against one of the couches. And immediately, he stormed out of the house. "Mummy, let him go." Doris pleaded from the dinning room where she sat watching the drama her parents were performing. "Will you keep quiet and face your food." With this, her mother stood up and followed her husband. "Daddy Doris, you are going nowhere today." She called after her husband. ------------- Engineer Emmanuel Agboola came to a halt in front of his car, the moment he realised that a car has been parker at the gate, which makes it impossible for him to drive out. "Woman, take your car away." He barked. "I told you. You are not going out today." His wife mocked. Engineer Emmanuel gave his wife a murderous look. "Do you realise the problem you are creating for my company?" He asked. "My God is able to solve problems, don't worry." His wife replied. "I told you about this state government light rail system. A chinese company is coming to execute the project but thanks to the federal government's indigenous policy which means the Engineers from China will work with two Engineering companies in Nigeria. My boss promised to introduce me to the company, which means a major breakthrough for my company." He explained. "I don't care. Your brother with all his monies died. Money is not as important as your life or anybody's life." His wife said. Engineer Emmanuel stared at his wife for a minute before he angrily brushed past her and into the house he went. ****
