Being a creative has its perks but most times you have more people trying to take advantage of you before you actually blow. Try your best to utilize any good opportunity you get but you have to be extra careful, as if you take everything that looks like an opportunity as one, you will end up disappointed and sometimes, people will take advantage of you so badly that they will make you question everything in the creative industry.
I know it must be really amazing when someone asks you to do a volunteer job for them at the early stages of your career or when someone invites you to perform at their program, but when people keep calling you back to use your talent to their advantage in the name of ‘exposure’ or ‘volunteer work’ to your own detriment, it is time to run.
Doing what you love is great, but do you know what is greater? Reaping the benefits and earning some money to fall back on when doing what you love. You cannot eat ‘exposure’ or use it to pay for classes that will improve your art.
You also have to be very skeptical about people who are more than willing to give you ‘opportunities’, some are there to take advantage of you as a woman. Be open-minded but learn to protect yourself and your art.
