</strongEpisode 1> It was a bright monday morning, the morning was still cold, leaves were seen dripping of the early morning dew... Kunle was taking hot pap and bean cakes, it was another week on a site where they were building a storey building belonging to one of the princess living overseas, either in london, japan or wherever only God knows. . . Kunle was a labourer, he usually went to building sites where he was most useful on daily basis, he mixed cement, arrange blocks and plastered building blocks for different parts of the house. At times too, he helped the carpenters in making roofs and ceilings on almost finished structures. Even though there were so many house being put up. Daily paid labourers and workmen like kunle are not well paid. Can you imagine a grown up family man being paid two hundred naira at the end of a full day's work. All his colleagues at work were buying and eating bread and beans, a good food routine for workmen but kunle couldn't afford to buy that.... . . Things were not good, in fact he felt life has not been good to him. As he sa on a cement block eating his remaining bean cake, he tried to recall everything about his life... It had been very hectic and full of struggles... . . . Kunle was just six years old when he lost his father and mother and he became an orphan... . They were living in a hut built by his father who was a small scale farmer. He would buy cassava, yams and other farm products, take them to ibadan and lagos to sell, come back after a week to his wife and two kids. . Kunle was the first born and his father had just enrolled him in the only school he found in the remote village and so he was very happy while the mother was caring for the baby girl, Yemisi, one year old. There was a day kunle's father went on a journey which he usually embark on with a lorry of yam and never came back. Rumour had it that the lorry had an accident with another one on a hill where both lorries rolled into a valley killing everyone but then nobody survived and nobody saw the wreckage to confirm the story. . Months after people in the village still did not know how to greet or even confront kunle's mother who kept hoping and praying that her husband would walk in one day as usual but nothing like that happened. Kunle's mother did not have any work so, with time all the money and food in the house was finished and she had to care for two kids. After a while, she started selling vegetables, pepper and tomatoes. Things were never the same again, like stew with no salt, her life had no direction, they live in abject poverty. Things became worst from worse when a snake bit yemisi while her mother left her at home. Her mother came back from the market rushing the child to the hospital at night was too late she died before the next day. Her life was now totally chattered. She became depressed and developed high blood pressure, she could not go to the market daily and so could not afford to eat a square three meals a day and live well. Exactly a year after his father's death, kunle's mother also gave up the ghost and was buried without ceremony. Kunle was moved to uncle bayo's place at the other bend of the town. . Little did he know that the worst awaits him.... TBC.....

EPISODE 2 Kunle regretted moving into uncle bayo's house because it changed his life totally... how... . . Uncle bayo was the only known relation of kunle's mother from the same town. He was a very young man living alone in one room, Because he was a drunkard, he was scarcely at home and generally broke... Uncle bayo was in primary six when he got the daughter of a neighbour. So he ran off and lodged in agamo village, briefly with kunle's mother and father before he got his place a few years ago. Because he would drink and drink always, All his income was spent on *weed*, He often lost his jobs. Nobody could remember his real name but everyone nicknamed him as "Uncle drunkard..." He would always put on one Cap or the other, a T-shirt and baggy knickers and sandals. All these affected kunle's school. He often went to school hungry with his uniform torn and dirty, no books, pencil nor biro. Whenever he had to pay his school fee, it was always a great struggle as uncle drunkard never had money. He would promise and promise with little or nothing happening. After a while Kunle was forced to go out after school hours to sell tomatoes and pepper. In the Evening, he would go into the bush and hunt, he might catch a bush rat or snake and sell it and use the money to buy a textbook or pay part of his fees. By the time kunle was in primary five, He was almost twelve years old. He had had to repeat classes two times; He failed woefully the first time And was very sick, He could not go to school the second time-truly. His uniform was badly torn and he couldn't pay for the exams. Uncle drunkard did not care or bother... Nowadays, uncle drunkard had become a notorious and habitual criminal, and whenever he is enjoying or smoking *weed*, If disturbed, he would bring out his belt to beat kunle saying "Am i the one that killed your parents?, dont bother me o or do you want to kill me?, little devil." Kunle would cry his eyes out, He would cry and cry throughout that day and far into the night. Life was so cruel and bad for him. . It got worst to the extent of taking his friend's uniform on loan. Bolu gave kunle his old shirt and for an amount to be paid every monday at school. He would manage to keep it for the first term, then when they resumed in the second term, bolu had calculated the three weeks holiday asking for the total from kunle. Kunle was surprised, he could not talk. "we agreed that you should pay me every monday and three mondays have passed now, so where is my money?" "i said, where is my money?" He repeated shouting at him. "but... but" Kunle kept stammering. "but, we didn't include holidays, you know we don't wear uniform during holidays..." Kunle intoned finding his voice back... "that is not my business" Bolu said and slapped kunle two times. "let me have my old uniform back now" Bolu said trying to remove the cloth from his body. Kunle started crying as bolu unbuttoned the shirt and untied the rope he used as belt and removed the knicker also. Except for the torn under wear kunle wore, he would have gone totally naked. In shame, kunle ran out of the school and went back home. Never had he been disgraced So much in his life, He wished the ground could open and swallow him up... TO BE CONTINUED....

EPISODE 3 When uncle Bayo woke him up the next morning to prepare for school, kunle told him what happened. Uncle was not bothered while kunle cried. "i can't figure out the reason for your tears now, if i told you before that you shouldn't go, you would think i was being wicked, now you can see by yourself: Anyway, i am relieved that i have more money to play around and enjoy myself." . . Throughout the day kunle cried and to him him he felt this was the greatest disappointment in his life as he has always hoped that after his primary education, he would go to secondary school after which he would be able to cater very well for as many people as he might wish without any trouble. . During this period, teachers in school often went to teacher training colleges after their secondary school education. Kunle was greatly depressed and had no friend to help him out of this problem. Staying at home for about a week doing nothing with little or nothing to eat and drink, Uncle Bayo called him "young boy, we cannot survive this way. Now that you are no more going to school, it's better you find something profitable to do" He suggested him learning tailor, carpenter and other various good alternatives. At this time he was working at a building site not far from the village so kunle started following him. He would fetch water for them, Later he carried cement, blocks with the wheelbarrow, then cement bags. Being a labourer on site, he woke up very early, He would lament. In faith he kept hoping on for years, hoping and praying for things to improve.... TO BE CONTINUED.....

EPISODE 4 The only noticeable improvement was that kunle could eat three times a day, buy clothes for himself once in a while as he could now save money in a box which he hid somewhere in the room-where his uncle could never see it. . There was a new cateen that iya kola started along the bush path that led to the building site where kunle worked as a labourer. Kunle always patronized her because her food was cheaper and more palatable than that of the other woman that usually come to them on the site. After a few years he got to know one of the young assistants working for her, and little by little, they got familiar. This young girl was named adeola. Kola would hang out with her whenever he's less busy... At a stage Adeola could comfortably tell iya kola and others that kunle also known as baba labour was dating her. Kunle would wait till adeola rounded off work for the day. Then, he would stroll along with adeola to her parent's house inside the village. They would discuss together for a long time and get into several other issues. It was barely two years into this friendship that Adeola got pregnant. . .. ...

*Continues* . .. ... The news spread like a wildfire in the village but then kunle could not deny nor claim innocent since everyone knew about their friendship. And there came another dramatic twist in his life: He had quickly rent a room by himself as uncle bayo a.k.a Mr drunkard Had told him seriously to pack out; At the same time, Adeola's parents too were serious that culture and tradition forbid their daughter to deliver in her parent's house, and she was hardly sixteen years old. His savings over the years went off within a few months. First, he had to organize a small inter-family introduction and engagement; Secondly, he had to rent a room quickly, get a mattress and one or two chairs. . Two months later Adeola gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. Kunle was drunk with happiness at this event, He swore he would give them his best always. Unfortunately, the child died on the naming day. Despite the free injection at the local community centre and clinic, The baby was not eating well and so on the eight day, he died quietly bringing agony, sorrow and sadness to the lives of kunle and his wife adeola... *continues* Episode Six They continued humbly after this, but even now more than ten years after they had married, they had no other child to call their own. A couple of times a friend or relation would come with sweet words to take adeola out to consult one renown local priest or the other who could help the barren get pregnant. Kunle was always ready to pay whatever it would cost, but nothing happened eventually. . . A day came, while he sat down thinking, he felt bored and tired of life. Kunle desired to be happy too; If It were possible, He felt ready to give up all he had. Mind you, he had nothing-for a full day of happiness, but he could not think of a way to go around this, he was sorely depressed. That day, he manage to meet the target to earn his full day's pay and people asked him "baba labour, what is wrong? Are you sick?" Everyone knew that he was scarcely ill, He hardly sick; A tall dark man, very strong, whatever the weather, he was always on the move. He slept that night in a terrible mood. His wife adeola moved closer to him and trying to comfort him as mush as she could, Nobody could cheer him till Nature took to the wonder land. All of a sudden In his dream kunle was with the village people at a fountain within the rocks with different sizes of bowls and metal buckets. When it got to his turn to draw water, a voice spoke to him softly "no kunle, not here" He wondered who was speaking as he stepped forward with his empty bucket to fetch water "go and meet your workmate segun: both of you have a mission to accomplish, the two of you shall go to the ifa priest in the next village; he will instruct you on how to get to iye- a village very far from here. Your special blessings are there for you but know this: Its better to give than to receive. Give always" . . He woke up screaming and sweating profusely and scared and at the same time shaking as he opened his eyelids. His wife asked with concern as she is also terrefied:- "my husband what happened?" "nothing" He replied her shaking... A little later . . He woke up from his dream, he was frightened and he fainted. She cried throughout the night not knowing what to do. Later he regained consciousness And he fully recovered from the brief spell, she asked him in confusion what had happened. "i had a dream. A wild dream" He said "what happened ?" She asked again, as he narrated it. Readily she encouraged him and they both went to see segun his work mate at the site. They got to the compound where he lived. "welcome" Segun said "i have been expecting you" Kunle and his wife both looked at each other surprised. "yeah, i see we are going on a long journey for our special blessings" After they discussed for a while they set the next day as their departure day. Kunle and his wife went back home where he packed the little things he had in a nylon bag. And the following day, they went to the next village to see the great ifa priest, opebe Opebe had his shrine and alter deep inside the next village. Even though it took them only few hours to reach the village, it took them much more time to finally locate his shrine. They knew their erran was divine because the priest was also expecting them. "i received the call about three nights ago that two young men shall be led here today" He said. He had a big tough voice for such a a man with a small stature and frame. As he brought out a flat stone on which he tossed five split of kolanuts with incantations. After a while, he removed them and started some colourful beads saying nothing. "now, it is clear" He turned to the men as they stood, looking at him curious about what he would say next. "iye!... It is for sowing and reaping seven years down please" After about an hour, he went into the bush around the shrine to get some shrubs and also brought out two skirt raven with palm fronds, with beads at the waistband. He instructed them "you too shall remove all your clothes here and put on these skirts. Then he marked their body and face with chalk. And told them which way to go towards iye, barely a week long journey taking nothing except the little money on them. They started out immediately trusting their creator. They would buy food if they see any or eat leaves and root people they met along the way would try and give them money and even clothes. But they were earlier warned not to change their clothes. So they simply kept everything till they reached iye. While they were going.. . . . Behold there shone a very bright light that could make someone go blind... Kunle and segun both fell on the ground and bowed... TBC

EPISODE 7 They cant behold the sight but then, they heard a voice that said. "fear not, truly you are on a divine mission, the land of iye would bring you wealth, but be careful, . . Its better to give than to receive" With that last word they raised their heads up to look on who was talking with them but they discovered that no one was with them nor speaking to them. They were astonished with this manifestation. Kunle believed it all what the strange voice had said and kept on pondering on the last words. . "Its better to give than to receive" It kept ringing in his mind. Kunle and segun proceded on their journey, they got there early that morning, They asked for the local chief, they went and introduced themselves to him, to show thier goodwill. Segun suggested they rebuild the chief's ram shacked hut, making it larger and bigger and with more rooms. The man was pleasantly surprised. In fact he was astonished. He gave them a piece of land to build their own house too. . . . . The people liked the two men who had come to live with them and all the building contracts by both native and strangers in the land where given to them. Thier handiwork was always neat and long lasting, their cost was not too high and there was honesty in evert deal. By the fourth year, kunle and segun had built their personal houses on different plots of land bought by themsleves, they sold the former. They became successful and wealthy building contractors at iye. . . . Kunle always tried to remind segun about home. "don't forget we are here only for seven years: Home is home we have to go back home when out time is up" "don't bother me o jare" segun would reply. . While kunle was always generous to everybody Segun always found it difficult to give render help to people. Beggars would come meeting them on site, kunle would give them whatever he had for food, Segun always feel annoyed at kunle generosity. Segun would always sent them away, he would keep repeating the same word. "ha! Useless people, i gave you yesterday why should i give you again today? Get away joor!" People would meet kunle at home to ask for some money to pay for the chief's priest medication, he took over the whole expenses while segun would made fun of him. Young people who wanted to marry would invite them as their special guest. . Kunle would honoured their invitation and also donate some money while segun would shun them. Even burial ceremony Segun would react rudely... He will always say:- "shey na me kill their papa ni?, at least i didn't kill their grandfather, why me?" . . At a stage segun jeered at kunle "your generosity is having the better of you! This is the reason you are yet to finish the second building and the wall round your large compound, compared to mine. Kunle, no wonder i am better than you, the good food you are supposed to eat, you give to beggars and these jobless people while you starve, i don't understand you" Segun would complain... TO BE CONTINUED...

EPISODE 8 Kunle and segun had been at iye almost seven years now, kunle intended reminding segun. After a while kunle convinced him that they had to go back home once their seven years was up. After a while, segun would pack some of his very good precious clothes wrap some money within and bind them tightly. This let him ti knock pieces of cotton wool together to make boxers. "i shall pack away all i can when it is time to move" He promised. Kunle did not pack his things rather he was just giving to the poor while segun continued to pack all he could. . . . Then early the next morning, segun rushed to wake kunle up. "now i'm in trouble! I'm in trouble, help me, save me, kunle am dead!" He kept shouting and crying. "what is it, dear friend?" kunle asked when he opened his gate. "calm down, what is it?" "its a dream, i had a dream!" He cried bitterly. "I saw a man coming out of a farm, dressed in grass skirts. The type we wore on our way here seven years ago. He pointed his stick at me saying; Now it's time you have to go back, He emphasized that we should once again dress in grass skirt carrying nothing more than walking sticks" Segun announced calmly. "that means it's time to go back to agamo. I think we should not take anything along with us" "impossible! It is a lie!" Segun replied. "now that we have become wealthy business men, we want to now argue with your dream, that dream is our instructor, lets wait a while may be we shall be given the date of departure" He closed the issue. And they both agreed but mind you segun was never satisfied about the decision of not taking anything along when its time to go back, he wished he could take all his precious things along with him... Two days later kunle received a word in his dream; They would leave in five days time the same way they had come. The day before they were leaving, they went to visit the local chief to bid him farewell. Incidentally, it was still the same chief, and he had grown close to them. He pleaded with them not to go. "you have greatly influenced and brought great progress to my village. I don't want you to go" He pleaded: After a while he said "is it because i have not given you any chieftancy titles?, honestly that is what my chief and i are working on, within the next two weeks we shall formalize everything and give this title" When kunle and segun came back to agamo village-now a big town which they could hardly recognise. After three days on their journey, they had finished most of the foodstuff they carried and they had to release the king's servant to go back to iye while they continued on their way. They were surprised because as they neared the entrance gate of the town, well dressed people with two big horses were waiting for them. They brought out every expensive wealthy robes, wrapped it around them, sundling them one on top of each horse! "ha ha leave us alone" they blustered "we have been waiting for you too since, the leader of the troupe answered. "it cannot be us, nobody knew we were coming. Even if they did, we were nobody when we were here" Kunle and segun argued. The leader spoke "you are kunle and you segun, both of them left here seven years ago on divine instructions, now mission accomplished. You are back, welcome!" Then singers and drummers emerged from nowhere. They were speechless as they were led around the town with music and dancing! The new king of agamo gave them a great reception with all different kind of food to eat and drink all day and night. Adeola was there with him too. Then they gave kunle a grand title of "otunba" As a man who would always remember home and hopeful of the future! After the reception, otunba kunle was taken to a large compound built by adeola, his wife. "how? How did you manage?" He asked.. "i manage the money you regularly sent home for my upkeep." "no-no, but i couldn't and i did not send you any money---" He stammered" "But you did, anytime you gave a generously towards any good course, i get money here too, so i never lacked" Adeola answered. "so it is a warning for me to continue to give alms and offerings, to remain generous has meaning to me oh, lord i am grateful" He praised God. His friend segun had a bad case as he was taken back to his old hut with the walls cracked and the roof falling down and he was asked by his people. "did you ever remember home?, you don't believe in generous to anybody; So as you lay your bed you shall lie on it" He burst into hot tears. Later, after some months, Adeola gave birth to a set of male twins. Everybody in the community rejoiced with her. Now, kunle had become the wealthiest man in the vicinity as he used the remaining money left with his wife after building the mansion to buy many cocoa farms. Later he opened one big cocoa depot where he sold cocoa to the cocoa industries in the cities. He reminisced all what had happened to his life full of struggles, then he exclaimed Truly i was homeless but not hopeless of the future" Kunle was later crowned the king of agamo after the former agamo had departed to the world beyond. . . . . THE END
