WHAT YOUR SEMEN ANALYSIS RESULT MEANS!!!!
Sperm and semen; what's the frigging difference???
In my work as a microbiologist, I have come to realise that most men do not know the difference between semen and sperm. Sometime ago, a man came to me to have his semen analysed and he kept bragging about how much semen he produces. According to him "madam, I know I have nothing to worry about, if you see the kian plenty sperm wey dey commot for my body ehhh it fit full this coke bottle oo" in the mind of this man, semen=sperm which is totally wrong. After analysing the man's semen, I found that the man was only shooting blanks since there was no sperm cell found in his "abundant" semen. So what's the difference?
Semen- this is that whitish fluid that comes out of the penis when a man ejaculates. It contains not only the sperm cells but also other fluids that help keep the sperm grooving
Sperm- This cannot be seen with the naked eyes and only makeup less than 5% of the semen
So what does your result say about your fertility???
In your result, you will see terms like sperm concentration, volume, sperm morphology and finally test conclusion. So lets take it one by one.
Sperm Concentration: number of sperm found in one millilitre(ml) of semen. You should have at least 20million in one ml to be considered fertile
Sperm Volume: The amount of sperm produced in one ejaculation. You should be able to produce at least 2ml of sperm#
Sperm Count: concentration * volume = 20million*2 = 40million. Therefore 40million sperm per ejaculation is the lowest acceptable limit
Morphology: Shape of sperm. we check the shape of the head, mid-section and tail to see if they have normal shape. At least 4% should have a normal shape.
75% of sperm should be alive
Motility: how fast is your sperm? to fertilize a woman, sperm must swim up the female reproductive tract to meet the egg. 25% of sperm should be able swim at a very fast forward movement and 50% should be swimming forward even if slowly.
Oligospermia: Low sperm count. This means you have less than 20million sperm concentration
Azoospermia: No sperm present
