[b]For 28 years, Gao Chengyong managed to stay under the radar, claiming one victim after the other – 11 innocent souls raped and slaughtered in 14 consecutive years. But the 52-year-old serial killer, and one of most elusive figures sought by police, was finally apprehended on Friday in northwest China’s Gansu Province, ending his journey of freedom and filth.[/b]

[b]According to local police, Gao has admitted to the crimes he had committed between 1988 and 2002 in Gansu’s Baiyin city and the city of Baotou in the neighboring Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. His youngest victim was eight years old when she was assaulted.
Sometimes, victims were deformed and body parts removed, causing panic and concern among locals.
“I went back home only to find my daughter lying in a pool of blood in the living room. 22 stab wounds were found on her body. Her breasts, hands and ears were all gone,” Wang Caihua, the mother of one of the victims named Cui Jinping, recalled when talking about the horrific scene of finding her daughter dead and disfigured in November 1998.
Over the past decades, investigations were hampered due to an array of complicated reasons including limited clues left behind by Gao at the scenes of his crimes.
In 2004, police announced a 200,000 yuan (around 30,000 US dollars) bounty for whomever could find Gao, but he was only located recently after examination of his fingerprints and DNA data.
As of Saturday, the news of his apprehension caused a stir online, with Chinese netizens calling for severe punishment to the murderer, while also questioning why justice took such a long time to be served.[/b]
