PART 1
I have loved Peace right from my year 1 in school,
that day I saw her walk up to me as the new
course rep of my class “Sammie I would like to be
pals with you, I wan make sure say I graduate on
time” she said with her white teeth so bright like
the sun, she had the gait of a runway model and
her fair skin glowed, Anita was so beautiful that
other of my coursemates were scared to ask her
out, she seem to have this “am made for the big
boys” aura around and so the inferiority complex
ridden guys never made an attempt to ask her
out.
She would call me at odd hours and beg me to do
her assignment on her behalf and I would gladly
do it, for anything to win the heart of such a
beauty I was ready to do, though her circle of
female friends despiced me alot, I was tagged a
“jew man” and I guess they wondered why in
class she sat beside me always in class, indeed I
had found love and would do anything to please
Peace, one very incident that comes to my mind
easily was an assessment test a lecturer fixed for
us and Peace had gone on one of her numerous
travels, the lecturer walked in on us unannounced
as we all rushed into the lecturer hall, as he
stood by the board writing out the quiz on the
board and anoounced “you have just thirty
minutes to finish this” the class went a beehive of
noise and booing but he looked serious as he
kept a straight face and we knew he was serious
about it and we all began to scramble in our sits
and the quiz began so fast the clock was ticking!.
As he walked round the sits collecting answer
scripts from on us, a chair before was when I
decided to take a final glance at my script and
then it dawned on me that I had been so love
stricken that it was not my name I had written on
that script but that of Peace and her matric
number too, I almost collasped as I stretched my
hand to cancel where I wrote her name and put
mine, the lecturer pushed my hand away and took
my script!.
I was so mad at myself that day and I vowed not
to ever do anything for Peace again, but that vow
didn’t outlive the weekend when Peace called me
on phone that she was back from were ever she
went, with all my strong vow of never wanting to
see her, I ran as my feet could carry me to her
house, walking into her well furnished room
almost sent jitters to my feet, her tiny apartment
was so tastely decorated, she had large flat
screen television hanging on the wall, an
aquarium and large bed, that made me wonder
the rich home she must be, as we discussed
while she prepared food in her kitchen, I was
having a hardon watching her on that pink bum
short and single she wore with no bra underneath
as her nipples punched so hard on it, I imagined
what it will taste like in my mouth and decided to
make that move, so see if I can get my one shot
and make love to my dream girl.
I stood up from the bed I was sitting on and
walked up to her in the kitchen “look Peace! see
what your doing to me” I said as I was pointing
at my bricks, for her to see the huge bulge that
was growing in my groin region, she smiled and
shook her head and said “You know my dad is a
junior minister and if you get me pregnant how do
you intend to foot my bills” I groaned and gave
out a big grin, walking closer to her and grabbed
her by the arm, when the was flung wide open
and Spider walked in, thats his name Spider, a
dreaded cult member of the Aye confratenity, he
was smiling when he entered but the moment our
eyes met, his face turned red and he said “Abobi
make una enter come see this jew man with my
babe” I almost pee on myself as two other guys
who were standing outside walked in, they burst
into laughter and he sat the by reading table,
deeped his hand into his bag like a santa claus
who was looking for the perfect gift to give a
child sitting on his bosom, he frowned his face in
a funny yet scary way and then drew out a pistol
and then dropped it on the table and said “you
see this? I will kill you here and nobody would
here about it, not even the school authority” I was
sweating profusely as I tried to man up and not
act like a girl in front of the one woman I love, I
mustered the last courage in me as my mouth
opened and drop these words “So na because of
woman you carry gun dey point me?” my heart
throbbing so fast like the konga drum on a
classic sound.
Spider couldn’t believe those words that came out
of my mouth, as he quickly grabbed his pistol
back, pointing it at me “if I no kill you call me
bastard” I just quietly went straight to the door
and closed the door behind me as I took to my
heels, I ran to my room and then began to narrate
my whole experience to Kene my roommate who
gave me the sad news that some guys have been
all over my department looking for me, he
described the three guys and one fit the perfect
description of Spider, I knew the school was no
longer safe for me at the moment so I decided to
take leave the campus for a while, I hurriedly
packed my bag and sneaked out of the campus
as I headed for the park.
On arriving at the terminal to where the bus that
was conveying passengers to Portharcourt where
my family resides, I saw the conductor pushing an
old woman so disrespectful, I wanted to ignore
the ugly scene and move on for I was running for
my dear life, my conscience couldn’t allow me go
any further as I walked towards the conductor,
pushing him from the back “You dey mad! na
person mama you dey push like this!” I said
angrily, he turned, looked at me and ignored me
as he entered his bus and closed the door, the old
woman’s stuff where all scattered on the floor as
I helped her to gather her goods, “mama where
are you going” I asked as I helped her in picking
and cleaning the dirts off her items, “my son I am
going to see a my daughter” she said so quietly
and I decided to help “Mama which department
your pikin dey?” I asked and she replied “Na
lawyer she dey study” I then held her by the hand
as I took her to the place where tricyles carry
students to their department “Mama wetin your
pikin name” she looked at me with her frail eyes
“Peace! Peace Udom” I couldn’t believe my ears, I
brought out my phone, opened the media section
and showed her a picture “na she be dis?” I
queried and she shook her head, “Yes na my
daughter be dat”
The wife of a junior minister can’t be dressed like
that, I called Peace on her cellphone as she was
reluctant to pick, I boarded the tricycle with
Mama and the tricylce took us to her lodge,
fearing for the safety of my life as I knocked on
her door, she opened to see her mother and I
standing at her front door as she looked at me
angrily “Sammie who is this?” , I was throwaback
that Peace was denying her mother, the woman
that gave birth to her, “Peace which kin rubbish
you dey talk, you no know me again?”, as Mama
began to cry.
