Dis is a captivatin story of a lagos babe whose
reckless life landed her in police costody
Tighthen ur seat belts cus dis is qonna b 1 hell of a
ride.

Episode 1: SEE GOBE!!!
See gobe o!!! Who goes for an interview and forgets their CV? Me! Ajoke Ade Omoshalewa Benson, I forgot my CV. ‘Have been trying to figure out how to ask this front desk personnel to help me out with the printing.
I put on my winning smile and made my way to approach her. She looked up from her computer screen and asked almost immediately “can I help you?” she smiled.
Yes, please! Can you kindly assist in helping me print out my CV?
“Sure, just give me your USB”
I swallowed and cleared my throat even though there was no traces of phlegm “ehm, I actually need to access my mail to print it”
She rolled her eyes.
“The thing is, I do not have access to the internet, I work with the intranet”.
“How about I send it to your email and you assist me in printing it out?”
“Ok”
That was how she saved the day o. chai!!! I would have looked stupid in front of the recruiters.
I sized up all the other candidates, won o ni logo jare!! This job was mine. I was tired of sitting at home and adding on weight. My room was filled with every Tuesday and Thursday Guardian newspaper had published since the beginning of the year.
There was this air of confidence around me that made me feel like this was it.
The coordinator for the interview signaled me to follow her. My heart skipped a beat as I followed her into the conference room. He was the first person I saw, looking so hot in his black suit and black bow tie. I almost missed a step as I took a seat. Oh my God! Holy Mary!!! Please! Please! Don’t let him recognize me, please don’t…
I stole a quick look at him. I was not sure he even noticed anyone walked in. He was busy talking to his colleagues . I looked down at my shoes and kept on praying in my heart he wouldn’t recognize me.
When you have some very adventurous friends in your life then you are bound to go troubleshooting once in a while. Let me rephrase that, young, vibrant, highly social and adventurous friends.
Jeje mi ni mo joko o (meaning: I was lazing around in my mother’s 4 bedroom bungalow, wearing my bum short, lounging in front of our 42 inches television with a medium bowl of ice-cream from coldstone) when Omoyeni and Omotunde gave me a ring. They were on their way to my house from work. There was a new club in Lagos and I had to go look it up with them. I wanted to decline, I should have declined, but I was bored stiff from sitting at home. DSTV was rubbish, they kept on repeating movies, music was starting to make my eardrum sore and I had eaten 4 times before evening. There was no declining a night of fun so yeah, I decided to tag along.
Good thing, I was the only one at home. My mum and sisters had gone to Dubai for the holiday; at least they all had jobs.
I got up from the 3 seater where I was coiled and dragged my feet into my room. I picked out a short blue dress, a black shoe and a matching bag. It was time for a little grooving.
We left for the club in Omoyeni’s newly procured avensis. This was after they had rummaged through my clothing and helped themselves to the party clothes they were able to find. Rock and return, it was our thing since University days; this was all in the excuse of they couldn’t go home to change. Thank their stars we all wear UK size 8! friendship made from heaven I guess.
We got to the club and Olamide’s new single was blasting in the air. Omoyeni dragged us to the bar and ordered a bottle of red wine.
“You know I don’t drink Omoyeni” I eyed her suspiciously
“Madam, loosen up and have some fun jare, you only live once” she screamed.
“Shalewa omo mummy” Omotunde added.
Another weird thing, we all had the prefix ‘omo’ before our names.
I drank and kept drinking. I needed to have fun. I wanted to have fun. I looked around the club and my eyes locked with a tall handsome young man staring at me. I looked away shyly.
I whispered to the girls.
“Staring dude, 4 O’ clock.
They waited for a while and both took a quick peep.
“Cute!! Omoyeni shouted, even though I was sitted right beside her. I smiled sheepishly. I could feel the alcohol in my system. Minutes later we were on the dance floor rocking to Chuddy K’s ‘Gaga Crazy’. I was having ‘mad fun’. I was singing aloud and dancing my own version of azonto when I felt someone hold my waist from behind.
I turned to look at who that was and it turned out to be the tall cute dude. I kept dancing and turned to face him. He was very handsome. He smiled and nodded his head as though he was saying hello. I smiled back stupidly. Walahi! It wasn’t me o, it was the alcohol. Omotunde had found herself a guy to dance with, I looked around in my almost drunken state for Omoyeni, she was at the bar buying another bottle of wine. Mini brewery, that was her middle name; she can drink for the olympics.
I tried not to laugh at this cute dude’s dance moves. Don’t know if it was the alcohol or if he really was dancing like a penguin.
He said something I couldn’t make out.
What?! I shouted
“My name is Femi”
Oh well!!! I moved closer to him, turned my back in such a way he could hold me from behind and I kept dancing, only this time my steps were naughty. Don’t judge! It was the alcohol. I was beginning to feel sick like I was going to throw up. Chai! Omotunde was a bad influence, wahalahi! My head was spinning. I tried to relax in Femi’s embrace. He turned me around and I almost had my head on his shoulder. I still don’t get it o. The song was not slow, yet we were slow dancing. I could hear his heartbeat, it was a beautiful rythym. Wait! If the music was loud, how come I could hear his heartbeat? I think ‘am drunk.
He held me in an embrace and tried to move with me. I still think he danced like a penguin sha! Alcohol or no alcohol.
I was about to tell him my name when Omotunde came to spoil the show. She told me it was time to go. Femi released me a little and tried to study my face. I was trying to pull out of his embrace when it happened.

Episode 2 (SEE GOBE ii) “Young lady!! Are you here to daydream or for an interview?” the coordinator asked. I looked up at the recruiters that comprised of 2 young Nigerian men, a white lady and the tall, beautiful Nigerian lady that was Coordinating. I murmured an apology to them all and avoided looking at Femi. The only time I was forced to look at him was when he was asking me questions. If he recognized me, I wasn’t sure. He kept a straight face and kept bombarding me with more questions. I suspect he remembers. This wasn’t what I planned. Biko! Chineke, do this for me na, let me get this job. Abeg!! The Company is one of the top 10 communication consulting firms in Lagos. The position was for a project Assistant to the Project Manager. The job would involve lot of brain storming and travelling. I was into it. Anything that would get me away from Mama Shalewa and her 2 witches that happened to be my sisters. I was tired of them all. God forgive me. It had not been easy getting a job since I returned from England and completed my National Youth Service (NYSC). Omoyeni and Omotunde got a job almost immediately after their NYSC. They did not have a master degree and they did not intend on getting one anytime soon. My mother had insisted I leave for my masters immediately after my graduation from Babcock University. One year of studying hard in a shared apartment with a Chinese girl that smelt of garlic, shopping at Primark while my mates were ‘doing’ Harrods , I had to manage money while working in an old people’s home to help out with what was left of the school fees even though it wasn’t required of me. oh yeah, and that tragic event that almost ruined my oblongata… what was the result? Jobless me!!! ‘ They rounded up the interview looking pleased, well! Only 3 out of 4. He kept a straight face and I couldn’t decipher his stand. My thesis on corporate growth in multinational company made a tremendous impression on them. The coordinator announced to me that if I was chosen, a mail would be sent to me. I tried not to miss my steps as I walked out of the conference room. I murmured another thank you to the front desk personnel and found my way out of the Company’s building. Stepping out of the building, I picked up my phone and dialed Omotunde’s number.’ “Hello Hun” she answered after the first ring. “Tunde, call me back and please put Omoyeni on conference” “What’s the matter Shalewa?” “Call me back” I hung up and made my way to my mother’s Kia Picanto. I placed my head on the steering and my head started dancing etigi. “iru yamayama wo leyi bayi? (Thinking: if I do get this job, how would I face him? Well, I hope I don’t end up in the same department with him. ok stop!!! rule that out. what happens if we end up in the same department?) My phone rang before I could answer my own question. I picked up immediately. “Hello! Omotunde, is Omoyeni on too?” “Bawo ni Shalewa, kilon sparkles?” kilon sparkles was Yeni’s slang. She curbed it from Bobo Omotayo’s book ‘London Life, Lagos Living’. “I’m alright dear; you guys won’t believe what just happened” “What happened?” they both chorused “The interview I want for at Marble Consult….” “What about it? Omotunde interrupted” “Omotunde, let her talk na, abeg!!!” Omoyeni scolded “He was one of the recruiters” “Who?” they both asked “The guy from the club” “ohoh! They both exclaimed I sighed! Story of my life, someone bite me! I remembered trying to tell him my name before Omotunde said it was time to go. I was still in his embrace when I grabbed his head and kissed him. Actually I just gave him a loud brotherly peck on his lips and threw up on his very expensive shirt and shoes; nothing spectacular. Whatever happened afterwards, I was blank. All I know is that I woke up with the craziest hangover ever. “Did we at least apologize, because I really don’t remember anything else afterwards?” “ehmmm!!! I think so” Omoyeni answered “What!! You don’t know? I screamed “Here’s the thing” Omotunde took over “ the only thing on our minds was to get you home, we laughed a bit, murmured a word of apology and literally carried you to the car. Actually, he carried you into the car because we found out you weighed tonnes and…” “Oh my God!” I cut her short.” it’s worse than I thought” I drove home listening to Adele’s ‘someone like you’. I stopped at The Palms and picked up a big bowl of ice-cream. I had no appetite, sighs!!! Omoyeni and Omotunde kept calling. I was too depressed to pick up. I finally started to doze off after hours of staring at the television when my phone vibrated. I picked it up and was about to scream at Omoyeni to leave me alone. Oh! A mail. Twitter can be so annoying at times. Only it wasn’t twitter instead the mail read “Dear OmoShalewa Benson, we write in reference to your interview at Marble Consult today. We are pleased to inform you…” I dropped my phone, the battery flew out and I jumped so high that my head almost hit the ceiling. Yes! Yes!! I would end the night by calling those 2 rug rats and then celebrate over a cup of fruit wine. Omoshalewa ti arrive.

Episode 3 (radio katanga) My Mum and sisters were due back this morning. I couldn’t wait for them to get home and give them the gist. Probably rub it in their faces on how God has not abandoned me; having inseparable non-identical twins as sisters sucked. Now that I have a job with 6′zero’s behind annually, maybe things will change. I don’t intend winning my mother’s heart again, I would love to remain the black sheep of the family sha. I wore my lucky black dress that I made myself and a royal blue blazer and added a little bit of makeup. I looked in the mirror and began to wonder if I was dressing up for him. Secretly, I was. I hope I would run into him today and maybe we would talk. I picked up the car key to my golf 3 (a graduation present from my late dad) and made my way out of the house, Mama Shalewa must not find out ‘have been cruising her car around Lagos. I was almost at the front door when it occurred to me to leave a big note at the front porch. I wrote “Dear Family, I hope you had a great trip.’ Am glad you’re back. I have gone to work and will see you all in the evening. Love, Shalewa” I could picture the puzzling look on the twin’s faces. OYO. Hehehehehhehehehe!!! I ran back to remove it. I think I would rather keep them in suspense. I got into the car and zoomed off to VI. I got to work earlier than I thought I would. I said a short prayer and walked into my new office. Oh! I like the sound of that, my office. Here is to beautiful beginning!!! The front desk was at work already. I walked to her desk and gave a big smile. “Good morning” I said cheerfully “Hello” she stood up and gave me a side hug. “You look good” “Thank you, so who will show me to my office?” Your office is just down the hallway, it’s the last office to the right” “Thank you” I walked down to the hallway and turned right as she said. A lady of about my age looked up as I entered. “Hello” I greeted “Good morning, you must be Omoshalewa” “Yes” I smiled and stood in front of her like the statue of Liberty. I didn’t know who she was so I decided to be extremely polite. “Am Lydia, ‘am a project coordinator” I relaxed. “Nice meeting you” I threw out my well manicured fingers. Lydia and I hit it almost immediately. For the next one hour, she briefed me on all I needed to know about the Company, the present project at hand. She told me about my new boss. The ‘boss’ was strict, principled but could be nice; a mood thing. The boss could be my worst nightmare or just a boss. All this would be dependent on how efficient I am on the job she made me understand. I began to grow chicken feet. Hmm!!! I don’t want to work with an ‘ojuju’ o. She told me she liked my dress and asked that I pull my blazer for her to see. I stood in front of her and pulled it. She was still admiring and we were both talking at the same time when she went mute all of a sudden. Oh, I adore polite people. Only polite people would allow another finish what they were about to say. I went on talking about how I made the dress and how I had learned how to make clothes and all, business was slow this days and bla bla bla; my usual dramatic self, I was making gestures and so on. Lydia’s eyes were twitching. She suddenly got up and said “Good morning, Mr. Williams. Oh oooo!!! The boss was here and he had seen my little fashion show. I turned around quickly and almost shouted “Good morning” Only my shout came out as a whisper. “Good morning Lydia” he turned to me “You must be Shalewa” “Yes Sir” He walked into his office and left me with my thoughts. “Holy shit, somebody bury me. I just ridiculed myself on my first day in front of my Boss. I just ridiculed myself in front of him…Femi…Omg! Femi is my boss. Somebody pinch me!! I looked at Lydia who was giggling. “Relax na! He is not that bad o” “Thank you” I took a seat in the position she had previously pointed out as mine. I was so confused and uneasy that I had to go to the restroom. I came back into the office and Lydia told me Mr. Williams was waiting for me. Omg!!! I got up and walked to the front of his office. I knocked and I heard his very husky voice beckoning me to come in. “Please have a seat” I was a nervous wreck. “Thank you” I took a seat in front of him. He was studying a book and did not even look up. I calmed myself down and my eyes strayed as I admired his office quietly. He had a nice view of the ocean. His table was magnificent and adorned with several ornaments. “Miss Benson, anything that catches your fancy?” I looked up immediately. He was so handsome. “Ehmmmm” I began to stammer He interrupted my one minute ‘kolo things’. “Our present project is a film festival coming to Nigeria from the stables of Cannes Film Festival” he paused and continued “Miss Benson, I would like that you come with a pen and a notebook whenever we meet, I hate to repeat myself” Ghenghenghen!!! I af enter it, mo ti wo!!! “Yes sir” I looked down at my toes. “Go to Lydia, she’ll give you a notebook and a pen” I rushed out and rushed back in almost immediately. How old was he? He looked 30 yet sounded 45. He scared me and I liked it. “We have so much to do ranging from logistics, venue Management, advertisement/PR, sponsorship and so on. I like to work with a chart. So for the next 3 weeks, what you would be doing weekly will be based on a work schedule for each week. We have tight deadlines we have to meet. In 4 months time, we will begin to travel…….” And that was how my morning went. Lunch time came and Mr Oga finally gave me a break. Lydia took me to the Company’s canteen where we sat down to eat and laugh about my ordeal of this morning. We talked about University, life outside school and so on. “So how long have you been working here?” I asked “This is my 2nd year and it’s been a wonderful experience”. “Can I ask you a question?” “Please go ahead” she said with her mouth full of vegetable salad “This morning, how long was Mr. Williams behind me?” I swallowed my rice. “About 2mins, he came in and I froze, I was going to open my mouth when he signalled me to hush. I don’t think he wanted me to even say ‘good morning’ in the first place” she paused and drank water. “Think he was just catching fun.” I rolled my eyes. “Just so you know…” She swallowed and continued “I think he might like girl’s o” now she was whispering. “In fact, I think he is sleeping with one of the project head, the girl’s dad owns some percentage of the Company too, she’s a rich man’s pikin. You know Mr. Williams also owns a large percentage of this company” I didn’t know that. Interesting! I said in my head. ‘ www.gbegborun.com’. I have indeed made a new friend and ‘am guessing she is the Company’s ‘tatafo’. “Is that so?” I asked “Yes o, ha! Here she comes. “I turned to look back. Lydia slapped my hands; “Ahn ahn, don’t look now na” I looked at my almost finished food immediately. The ‘Lady’ sat very close and I was able to get a good look. She was flawless, really pretty. We were on our way out when Mr. Oga walked into the canteen. He walked straight to where ‘Miss Flawless’ was seated. I heard him say “there you are. I’ve been looking all over for you” She stands to give him an ‘air kiss’ (hmm! Inside the canteen o, hmm!) “Hello darling”. My heart sank. Adele’s ‘someone like you’ began to play in my head. Life is mean and yeah, ‘someone like you’ is my favourite sad song. Omoshalewa Benson: Tales of a Lagos babe is written by oyelakin babatunde sodiq AKA teesolid (@IamTEESOLID)

Episode 4 [mr anonymous] I could hear the sound of the TV as I opened the door to the house. My people were home. I put off my shoes and tiptoed into the sitting room. I came into the sitting room to find Taiwo coiled on my favourite chair. I wanted to cover her eyes from behind but I resisted the urge. Let me play matured jare, 4 years isn’t a joke after all. For your mind Shalewa. Hehehehehe! As though she could feel my presence, she looked back and screamed “Moi Sister” she got up to hug me. I tickled her and found my way out of her embrace. She was a size 12. Way bigger than I am. “How was your trip?” “Fine, fine”. She sat down and started to tell me about their tour; ride in the desert and so on. She paused all of a sudden. “Wait sef, where have you been? I know Mr. Malik was supposed to pick us up from the airport, but weren’t you supposed to at least be at home to welcome us?” she slapped my exposed thigh. I grinned, of all my family members, she was my favourite. She had the mind of a child and was easily drawn to the dark side by her evil twin. “Guess what?” “Oh now!!! Tell me jor” “Guess now” I tickled her and she began to laugh I was about to tell her when my mum walked in. I got up to hug her. “Bawo ni Shalewa ?” “Fine ma, ekabo ma” “Where have you been? It’s been over 3 hours we came in” my mother asked. I started to smile. “I got a job” “You got what?!!!” Taiwo screamed and ran to hug me. “Congratulations o, Oluwa seun! At least you will be able to contribute to the affairs of this house” My mum said as she took a seat and seized the TV’s remote from Shalewa. I smiled and gave her a kiss on her cheek. “Where’s Kay?” “She went to see Kanmi” Mum answered “Ok” I went into my room and met a bag of goodies from Dubai. I would go out to say thank you later. I called Omoyeni but she wasn’t picking up. I was still thinking about the game Femi was playing when my phone vibrated. It was a ‘whatsapp’ message and I couldn’t recognize the number. It read “Hi” I answered back “Hello” That was how I began gisting with an anonymous number o. Me: who is this? Anonymous: Hmm! A friend Me: A friend that has no name Anonymous: Let’s just leave it as that. So, how did your day go? Me: Fine Anonymous: Good. So what are you up to? No outing tonight? Me: Duh!!! It’s a work night…Who goes out on such days? Anonymous: You can never be too sure. Some of us can’t tell the difference. Me: Lol. I take it you are the grooving type. Anonymous: Hmm! Not in particular, but I like to have fun whenever I can. Guy stuffs! Me: Right now, I know this is a guy ‘am chatting with but it would actually be nice if I could put a name to the sex. Na who be this person?! Hmm!!! I felt like I was on a blind date, only no one hooked anyone up. I dialled the number but this anonymous guy didn’t pick up. I tried again, no answer. Me: kindly pick up your call No reply Me: are you there? Still no reply. I gave up and went to the sitting room to say thank you for the gifts. Kay was home with Kunmi. “Welcome back Sis” I approached her with a hug. She met me halfway. “Hello Kanmi” I greeted Kanmi as Kay and I disentangled. “Hi Shalewa! I heard you got a job” Kanmi asked ” Yes o, I did. I only just started today” “We spoke on phone yesterday, how come you didn’t say anything?” Kay asked. Typical of her. What others let go of, she would cling to it as though her growth in life depended on it. “I wanted to surprise you guys” I grinned stupidly. She’s the only 24years old that makes me feel silly. Most times I just let it go and blame my mum for it all. “I see, congrats o” she said “Oshee” I answered in Yoruba. It was one of my tactics of reminding her of who was older. Yoruba commanded respect..heheeheheheheh! I could feel Kanmi’s eyes on me. Does he still nurse a crush? I hope not. Kanmi is 2 years older than I am and has been a part of our family for almost 2 years. The twins and I met him at an Aunt’s 40supth/sup birthday in England. He was visiting his family in England and they had brought him along to the party. We all enjoyed his company and spent most of the afternoon in England with him before the twins returned to Nigeria. He left 2 days after the twin’s departure to Nigeria; this was after he had told me he had a serious crush on me. I turned him down and told him I wasn’t eighteen any longer and did not believe in ‘crushing’ on people. One week later, Daddy died in a plane crash. Kanmi had left dozens of messages on my answering machine. He had stayed back in Nigeria to comfort the twins. I guess he and Kay hit it afterwards. I really don’t know their love story and I did not care one bit. All I know is he had better not be crushing on me anymore. I went back into my room and fell on my bed. There was a ‘whatsapp’ message on my phone. Anonymous: so how was work today? Me: hmm! It was fine. I called you. Anonymous: i know I was beginning to get angry. He didn’t even apologise. I decided to play mute. Anonymous: so tell me about yourself. Shio! You never know as e dey go. Anonymous: You there? Jamb question. Anonymous: you really looked good today. I sat up immediately. Who is this? Femi?? I put a stop to my muteness and replied with speed of light. Me: very funny. So what did I have on today? Anonymous: the cutest dress ‘have ever seen and to think that you made it yourself. Omg!!! Only Lydia and Femi knows this. It was definitely Femi. I sat up immediately. Me: you just gave yourself away you know. Anonymous: oh! Did I? Me: I know you work at Mable Consult Anonymous: I do? I rolled my eyes. Drama prince! Me: I know you do *straight face* Anonymous: *smiles* Goodnight Omoshalewa Me: see, am not a kid and I don’t believe in playing pranks neither do I have time for jokes, so tell me your name. Silence. Hmm!! Me: are you there? Me: hello I gave up. I will get to the root of this matter tomorrow. It was definately Femi. It had to be Femi. I dozed off with this on my mind. U quyz shuld av a wondaful 9t rest plus a tendaful murnin 2 wake up in. B xpectant of tomorrow's episode's, I promis 2 drop lyk 3 episodes b4 evenin # watch out. I remain loyal #TEESOLID #peace out

Episode 5 [this love sha!] I was listening to Omoyeni’s gist and answering my whatsapp message at the same time. It was Friday night and I finally had time to see the rugrats. We were seated at the pool side of Ember Creek waiting for Omotunde. “Why is Omotunde late o?” I asked Omoyeni rolled her eyes. “What?” I asked suspiciously “Labib ambushed her in front of her office” “What! Like seriously!!! That guy needs to be arrested” “Wait na, hear the gist first” I dropped my non-alcoholic cocktail. “Labib sent someone to her office earlier on with flowers, fresh flowers” she grinned. I eyed her as she continued. “He was waiting for her at her office gate when she closed. They are on their way here” “What do you mean? He is not invited here, if he stays, I’ll leave” “Take it easy now, Labib is not that bad” I was about to take her down the memory lane when they arrived. By ‘they’, I mean the ‘woman beater’ and my love stricken Omotunde. “Hello Shalewa, Omoyeni” Labib greeted Alright, Pause. Labib is every woman’s dream. He is from a respectable Muslim home. He’s an entertainment mogul; a very strong business man with lots of assets, money dey for pocket. He is tall, dark and handsome. Only problem is that he has anger issues, he is very insensitive to her needs, he could go without talking to her for a week, he enjoyed picking fights over little things and after they make up, he would monitor her around like a GPRS, she was not allowed to have male friends…a very long list of why this ‘molue’ was wrong for her, and yeah, the worst of all, he recently started hitting Omotunde. I answered with my nose. Omoyeni got up to hug him. I almost hissed with disgust He whispered into Omotunde’s ear and she giggled while I looked away. Labib left us to enjoy our evening. Phew! Feelings ecstatic, if he had stayed, I would have dialed my own number, picked and tell a lie to the girls my mum needed me at home. Shior! “So Omotunde, did he offer you a trip to Dubai this time?” She smiled. “No, we just talked. His mum called me too”. She smiled again “we talked” “You said that already” I said impatiently “That’s it, I don’t like your tone Shalewa” “Sorry” I apologized shabbily and rolled my eyes. “He said he was sorry and he would never do that again. I know this is the 2nd time and I kind of provoked him” “Omotunde, you know I love you right?” “Yes” she said with a tear rolling down her eye. “Don’t cry, please” I got up to hug her “I love him; I know he is wrong for me. I know he is but he loves me. He genuinely cares. We agreed to see a psychologist to help with his anger issues. I really don’t want you saying anything negative right now. Just be there for me, this is all I ask. I will take care of my own shit, ok?” She touched my face. I stepped on Omoyeni’s feet expecting her to say something. She hugged us both instead. I decided to let it go for now and interrupted the ‘hug for stupid love’ moment that was going on. “Did I tell you guys about the anonymous whatsapp friend?” “Yes you did, what about him?” Omotunde asked wiping her face with a Kleenex she pulled out from her bag. “Remember I said I suspected Femi?” “Yesss” they both chorused impatiently. I laughed. Gist mongers. “Turned out I was wrong. I checked his business card and the number did not tally.” “Obrocho!!! What if he bought another line for this purpose” Omoyeni said. “Wait na” I smiled and continued “I dialed the number when I was in his office” “And……” Omoyeni interrupted Omotunde shot her a ‘shut your trap’ look. “I didn’t hear it ring in his office. I was thinking the phone must ‘have been placed on silence but few minutes later, while I was still in his office, I got a whatsapp message; it read “playing detective Miss Benson?” They both opened their mouth. “And Femi was right there in front of you?” Omoyeni asked. I nodded my head. They both started to laugh uncontrollably. I stared at what was left of my drink and smiled at them. My phone vibrated. It was a call from Mr. Anonymous. “Omg!!! He’s calling” “Who?” They both asked at the same time “Mr. Anonymous” “Pick na” Omotunde said pushing my phone to me I did. “He… He..llo” I stuttered “Hi Shalewa” I almost passed out. It was sultry, sexy and masculine, strong! Omoyeni and Omotunde glued their ears to my phone. “Hi” I whispered as I tried to place the voice. It almost sounded like Femi. Almost. Was it Femi?? “Since I’m a gentleman, I decided to return that call of yours” “Ok, good for you” I smiled “Can we meet?” Omoyeni looked at me and whispered yes. She stared at me like a Mother asking her daughter to sweep the floor. “sure, when?” “Now” “I do not think that would be possible right now” I bit my lips. I was dying to know if it is Femi. I changed my mind in seconds. “We could meet up” I changed my mind “I’d love that if it won’t be much of a trouble” “Where?” “I’ll let you pick” Omoyeni signalled “here” “Ember Creek” I said almost shouting. “Cool, it’s just 5mins drive from my home. I live in Queen’s drive. What time?” “I’m there at the moment”. “Alright then, I’ll see you in a bit” I waited for him to hang up and faced the rugrats. They both started to giggle. I got up quickly. “How do I look?” “Relax jor, you look good” I had on Ralph Lauren Polo, blue denim and a medium heel court shoe. My hair was tied up in a bun. Omotunde’s phone rang and she excused herself to receive the call. Labib obviously. “Omoyeni Adegbite, what was that?” “What?” She frowned “Why didn’t you tell Omotunde the truth? She deserves to be happy”. “Shalewa, I really hate to see her sad. Labib has his shortcoming, who doesn’t? I am yet to come across a perfect man or a perfect relationship. Most relationships we term ‘great’ are seen that way mostly because the couples involved have found a way to patch things up” “I know that, but not when a man starts abusing you physically, that’s beyond patching up” She squeezed her eyes. It was her thing when she was talking about anything serious. “You heard her say he will see a ‘shrink’. So fingers crossed”. I was about to make a comment when Omotunde joined us. My phone vibrated, it was Mr. Anonymous. I picked up immediately. “Hello Shalewa, I’m here”. My heart skipped a beat

Episode 6 [monday drama] Have you ever tried getting to work on a Monday morning, after a busy but enjoyable weekend and then your car breaks down half way to work? *whew* Story of my life. I managed to pull over by the road side and practically jumped out of the car to decieve myself with mechanic skills. This silly car wants me to get a query abi? I picked up my phone and dialled my mechanic’s number. “Haruna, where you dey?” “Ha! Aunty Salewa…” (Haruna always calls my name like the people from Ibadan) “I dey for Mowe o” “Chai! My car just breakdown for falomo o. Alright now, call me when you return” “How you go come do am na, how you go go offis (meaning: office)” “I go carry ‘drop’” “Ok o, bye!” “Bye Haruna” I ended the call. I picked up my bag, locked my car and stood by the side of the road to wait for a cab. Five minutes went by and there I was still standing on the road. The rain was threatening to pour down. I dialled Omoyeni’s number. “Yeni, where are you?” “Good morning to you too Shalewa” I grinned. “Sorry jor! good morning Yeni. My car broke down and am stuck on Awolowo road” “Wow, Pele. I am actually on my way to the mainland. I have a meeting in one of my Company’s branch” “Oh sugar!! Okay then, thanks” “Wait!” She screamed “you didn’t call to tell me about your date with…” I cut her short before she could finish her interogation “Yeni, I’ll call you later jor” “Ok” I hung up. I was frustrated. It was beginning to drizzle. I started to make my way back to the car when a prado jeep with a tinted back seat parked in front of me. “Good morning Madam” the man driving greeted. “Good morning Sir” hmm!! He looked like a driver o. What he wore looked like a uniform and it was terribly familiar. “Come inside ma” “Ehn, come inside ke, I don’t know you” I said almost screaming. He started to laugh. “You dey fear?” “Thanks, I’ll wait for a cab” I was about to move away when the occupant sitting in the owners corner let the window down. “You never struck me as someone who gets scared easily” he was smiling “Oh my God!!! Good morning Mr. Williams” “Please come in Shalewa” I got in and murmered a thank you. “How did your weekend go?” “It went well, yours?” I smiled. Where to start? Ok. So I had a blind date with this dude that I thought was you. He arrived at our agreed meeting point and he turned out to be one of the most handsome man I have ever met. His name is Daniel and he is the head of H.R in Mable consult, you should know him, since you own some shares in this company. Lydia gave him my number after he begged her for details about me. He seemed cool and I would love to hang out with him again. I did wish it was you, but you still don’t wanna own up to knowing me….Ok, those were the thoughts in my head, but instead I replied “My weekend was lovely, thank you”. My voice was all of a sudden sultry, was I flirting with Oga unconciously? He reached out to pick up a paper and his hand accidantely brushed mine. Was that on purpose? My heart began to do a marathon. “Shalewa, Shalewa” I almost jumped. Apparrently he had been calling me and I didn’t hear. “Yes Mr. Williams” He laughed. “Are you alright” “Yes I am. I was just thinking about my car” (hmm! Shalewa you’ve prayed today o and you already started telling lies, God is watching you on 3D) “Oh! What went wrong with it?” “I really do not know and my mechanic is out of town until God knows” “I could send mine if you don’t mind?” He interrupted I went mute. Ok, what is going on? Why is Mr. Oga being nice to me? “If it wouldn’t be any trouble, I wouldn’t mind” “Alright then” he faced his driver. “Bello, kindly contact Sule and take him to the spot where we picked Ms. Benson. You can liaise with her for her keys and the rest” “Ok sir” he answered I looked at him and said thank you. “My pleasure” he said smiling. He had one dimple…choi!!! Whatever jare! I decided to allow the thought of seeing Daniel at work envelope me. I would see Daniel today and I promised him I would go to lunch with him. Maybe it was time I occupy myself with some other guy. It had begun to rain heavily and Oga had asked the driver to allow the songs on the playlist of his phone play. It was Mavin Gaye and he was humming. The only things missing were candles and a bottle of champagne. I closed my eyes for some seconds and imagined Mr. Oga’s lips on mine….choi! See temptation. I forced myself to stop fantasizing and began to think about Daniel again; there’s no way in the world I’ll let this man humming play games with me. We got to the office and the delimma was how to go in and not get wet. Mr. Oga brought out a medium sized umbrella. “This should do, let’s go Shalewa” I hesitated. Let’s go where? Inside this rain; see this Oga o. “We’ll share the umbrella and I promise you will not get wet” he said smiling. “Ok” I forced a smile. He passed me the umbrella and asked the Driver to bring our bags in after he had parked the car. That was how we squeezed ourselves under the tiny umbrella with Oga almost holding my shoulder in an attempt not to get either of us wet. Thankfully, we were as dry as a ‘bonga fish’. Mr. Oga went into his office leaving Lydia to start sniffing for new stories to carry about. “Ahan ahan!!How come you came in with Mr. Williams?” “Long story o” “Tell me, I have all day” I started to laugh. “You like gist” I narrated my ordeal to her leaving out the Mavin Gaye and all other eye brow raising story. “By the way, who did you give my number?” She started to giggle “he called right? He is so handsome” she started making funny faces and attempted to tickle me when Daniel worked in. Lydia hurried back to her seat smiling and greeted him as though she had hot yam in her mouth “Good morning Mr. Odulaja” “Good morning Lydia” he smiled and continued “Hello Shalewa” “Good morning” I answered shyly. Hmm!! *Why shall I shy?* Ghen ghen ghen ghen! “One ’O clock?” he asked “Yes” “See you then” he was about stepping out when Mr. Oga came out of his office. “Daniel, how far now?” they shook hands. “Femo la la, I dey o”. “What brings you here this early hour of the morning?” Mr. Oga asked. “Just making sure our new staff gets the proper orientation” He answered looking at me. I faced my computer screen and acted invisible. My heart kept dancing ‘alingo’. “I see” Mr. Oga said smiling. Daniel left our office and Mr. Oga went back into his. Just when I thought the drama was over, a text message came into my phone. It read “I think ‘am pregnant, don’t tell anyone” It was Omotunde. I was about to catch my breath and not pass out from everything when my extension rang. “Shalewa, please come to my office” it was Mr. Oga and he sounded pissed. Episode 7 [monday drama ii] My heart skipped a beat as I went into Mr. Oga’s office. “What does he want? What have I done?”, I wondered. “You called me.” He looked up at me and removed his glasses. “Have you read the review done by a reporter from Sahara on Mable Consults handling the festival this year?” He asked. “No Sir.” “I suggest you read it.” He passed the paper to me. “Shalewa, for someone I call my assistant, I wonder why I should be seeing this before you.” I didn’t reply. I glanced through the review with speed and almost hissed. What’s the problem? Okay, she basically… I mean the reporter basically referred to Mable Consults as a toddler in handling a project this big. She ended it with a comment on how the company is seen as sleek and as a 21st century retro-urban communications company, so we should be able to make waves with the project. What the hell is the problem with this man?, I wondered. The review wasn’t that bad! I cleared my throat and looked up to see him staring at me. It was uncomfortable. “So what do you think?” He asked. “It might not be as impressive as we may have wanted but I don’t think it’s a bad one. She hasn’t said anything to totally mar what we will be doing; she has only made people expectant. I believe this is the time to buckle up on our PR and put more positive vibes out there.” He smiled. “I knew I wasn’t wrong about you. Coffee?” He asked. “No, thank you sir!” I looked away shyly. “Can you and Lydia prepare a 30-minute meeting with our PR consultant?” “Ok sir.” I got up to leave. “Shalewa?” I turned to look at him and answered, “Yes, Mr. Williams?” “I really don’t fancy people from other departments coming in here at an early hour.” “Are you referring to Mr. Odulaja?” I asked that question and provided an answer before he could say anything. “He was here to make sure I had everything I needed.” “Like what?” He got up and began to walk slowly towards me, like a lion about to tear his prey apart. My heart began to beat fast. “Ehm em …” I couldn’t make out any word. My brain had gone on recess without my consent. “What?” He asked as though he was mocking me. I think I saw him smile. “That’s it sir. He just wanted to find out all that.” I cleared my throat. He stopped in front of me. I think my heart stopped. He picked up a document from the shelf beside me and went back to his seat. “That will be all Shalewa. Please get to it and let’s have all that we need before the meeting.” “Alright sir.” I tried not to fall as I walked out of his office. “What happened?” Lydia asked as I took my seat. I narrated what transpired in Mr. Oga’s office to Lydia. We deliberated on what was needed and prepared for the meeting. We were in the middle of this when my phone rang. “Hello, Omotunde.” I walked out of the conference room and signalled to Lydia that I would be back in two minutes. “I took a test and it’s positive. I’m pregnant, Shalewa.” Oh Omotunde!” I heard her sniffles. “Are you crying?” She gave a tacit response. “Don’t cry, please.” We both went silent for some seconds. “Have you told Labib?” “No I haven’t. You are the only one I’ve told.” “You have to tell him.” “I will; I just don’t know how.” “We will figure it out,” I said as I nodded to Lydia who was signalling to tell me the meeting was about to begin. “Omotunde, I’ll call you in one hour and we will figure this out together, ok?” “Ok.” “I have to go now.” We murmured our goodbyes and I went into the conference room for my first major meeting in Mable Consult. The meeting took forever and by the time we were done, I was rushing to the canteen to meet up with Daniel. I dialled Omotunde’s number as I walked to the canteen. “Hello Omotunde.” “Shalewa, he proposed! Oh my God! I’m getting married!” As she said it, I felt something ring in my head. This is better said in Yoruba: “Ori mi l’ago.” Not because I wasn’t happy nor was it because this wasn’t great news but… “Omotunde, is he even done seeing the psychologist?” I heard her grumble. “This doesn’t change anything; it doesn’t stop him from seeing the doctor. Be happy for me Shalewa and don’t go fishing for faults.” I was going to lose my temper. Thank goodness Daniel was standing and watching me walk towards the canteen. He looked like a child that was getting his first puppy. “I am happy for you. I just don’t want you forgetting some essential things. Can I call you back? I’m famished and I have just one hour break.” “Ok.” I heard her sigh. “I love you, ok?” “I love you too, Shalewa Benson.” I ended the call and smiled at Daniel. “Hello.” “Hello. Let’s go.” He was walking towards the exit. “To where? I’m famished, mister.” He threw back his head in laughter. “You’ll see.” We got into his Toyota Avensis and he kept on driving. I didn’t know where we were going. “Where are we going?” “Lunch.” “Hmm!” “Hmm what?” I smiled. I liked him. I began to feel like I had known him for a while. He drove into Tiamiyu Savage Street on Victoria Island. “Terra Kulture?” He looked at me grinning. “Witch!!” I stuck out my tongue. He smiled. We entered the restaurant and ordered for some food. I ate like a hungry lion. “You have a healthy appetite; I like!” He said as he picked up some spinach with his fork. I smiled. “So tell me something you haven’t told me since we started chatting,” he said. “Hmmmm, you ask me what you would like to know and I’ll tell you.” That was how Daniel bombarded me with ‘Jamb’ questions ooo. “What’s your best colour?” “Tell me about your childhood.” “Where are your parents?” “When would you like to get married?” That caught my attention. “What did you say?” “I asked when you would like to get married”, he repeated. I actually heard him. The question just came as a shock to me. We only just met and he was already asking me such a weighty question. I blinked twice and answered. “I haven’t really given it a thought yet.” He started to laugh. “Seriously, you are the only girl, ‘beg your pardon, lady I have come across who does not yet have an answer to that question. The average Nigerian lady has her wedding plans in her head by age 20!” I started to laugh. “So are you saying I’m different?” “No, I’m just saying you’re an alien.” he smiled. I laughed again. “When would you like to settle down?” I threw his question back at him in another dimension. “End of this year or early next year”, he answered. I giggled and continued. “Does that mean you have found ‘her’?” “Yes.” His answer was sharp. I smiled and told myself: “Case closed, this handsome dude is taken. He probably wanted a sleep buddy or maybe a friend.” Daniel interrupted my thoughts. “You”, he said vaguely. I looked at him and our eyes locked. “I don’t understand.” “I found you. I want you. I want to know you. I want to be your friend and I want you to be my friend. I want to know what makes you tick, what makes you cry and eventually, I want you to be my wife.” For the umpteenth time today, my heart stopped. Seriously ooo. I began to stammer. “Ehm ehm…I don’t know what to say.” “I’m sorry, I know this is overwhelming. I’m usually not this forceful.” I smiled. “It’s alright. Should we head back to work? It’s an hour already and I have a lot on my desk.” “Yes we should, as the H.R., I shouldn’t indulge you.” He winked. We left Terra Kulture and drove back to the office in silence. “Tell me you’ll give it a thought?”, he said as I was about entering my office. “I will.” I went back to work with so many thoughts in my head. “Was Mr. Oga jealous? Was he flirting with me? Is Omotunde doing the right thing? Did Daniel really mean all that he said? Did I like him enough to consider dating him?” All these thoughts, work, coupled with Lydia begging me for gist were what ended my day. Episode 8 [NAKED] There I was running around like a mouse and helping Omotunde plan her wedding. I was going to be the maid of honor. Why me? Despite my stand on what I feel about Labib, Omotunde had to choose me. “I got it!” Omotunde shouted. “What?” I was scared. “My colour.” I heaved a sigh of relief. Alarmist yamayama, o fe fun mi ni heart attack. “What have you decided on?” “Turquoise blue and grey.” “Will your fiancé like it?” I asked almost rolling my eyes. “He should.” “Hmm! Ok o.” I decided to tread on the caution track so I won’t be thought of as being envious. Oya Shalewa, arrange yourself. It’s Omotunde’s choice and she’s happy. Shikena! “You still haven’t given me the hot gist about Danny,” Omotunde said. “Who is Danny?” “Very funny. Talk jor!” Daniel and I have been hanging out for over a month. I was starting to feel something for him, though what I felt for Mr. Oga was still there. I still don’t know what the attraction is. “Hmm! He is insisting he has to come for your introduction as my date. I told him it was family matters and he has refused to take no for an answer.” “Let him come o, infact I’m inviting him. Give me his number.” “Huh?” “You heard me.” “No jor. Ok, he’ll come.” “Better.” We went back to talking about colours and wedding wahala; hair, bridal train or no bridal train, bla bla bla. Later on, I rushed home like a crazy woman, my grandmother was visiting from Akure and I couldn’t wait to see her, maybe she would drive sanity back to our home. My phone had been ringing for some minutes. I kept ignoring it. It was Kanmi, only God knows what it is that he wants. He had Kay, wasn’t that enough? I turned into my estate and murmured a hello to the guards. I was about to park my car when I saw Kanmi from a distance staring like a loony. E gba mi!!! Kini man yi wa kiri bayi? I packed the car beside him. I picked up my bag and got out. “Kanmi” I greeted eyeing him at the same time. “Hello Shals” that was his nickname for me. “Why didn’t you go in? Is Kay not at home?” “I didn’t come to see Kay, Shals. I came to see you.” “Hmm!” My head started to calculate. Kini jero e fe? “Let’s go inside then.” I walked towards the gate. Kanmi pulled me back and made me stagger for control. “Ahn ahn, Kanmi! What is it now?” “I’m sorry Shals. I didn’t mean to do that. It’s just that I can’t stop thinking about you. I wanted to be there for you after the death of your father. I wanted to love you, take care of you, but you pushed me away. You pushed Kay into my arms instead. I was only being a friend to your family at that time and Kay.” “Oh my goodness! Listen to yourself. Do you want to cause a war in my home? What if Kay finds you here? What if …” He didn’t even let me finish. Kanmi went down on his knees and started to beg. “Ha! Kanmi, oya dide, please get up.” I approached him to pull him up. I was being nice to this delusional dude when the loveliest sister on earth came out. See wahala o… “What’s going on here?” Kay asked forcefully. I didn’t know what to say. Kanmi got up immediately. “Hey darling!” He approached her and began to laugh. “I slipped and fell. Shalewa was helping me up.” She eyed us suspiciously. “How come you didn’t tell me you were coming?” “I wanted to surprise you!” He replied, grinning stupidly. I left both of them outside and went in to see my lovely grandma. As I opened the door, my mum was standing akimbo glaring like someone that was going to fight a rival. “Hello ma!” “Hmm! What were you doing outside with Kanmi? Why didn’t you tell K he was around?” “What are you insinuating ma?” “Answer my question.” “You want to start misbehaving with kanmi abi, the same act that got you in trouble and took away your father at an early age? What did you say?” I lost my temper. “Daddy died in a plane crash and I can’t believe you just blamed me for his death”. I walked towards her and continued “Misbehaving with Kanmi? Same thing I did? What do you mean by that, what do you…” I started to shout. I stopped immediately I saw grandma. I ran to her side and knelt on both knees. I started to cry. “Omo ola, omo dada, omo legbeleruki oba, get up my dear. Those beautiful eyes are not made for tears.” She said wiping the tears off my eyes. “Mama Shalewa, come with me. We have to talk.” Did I just act like a victim? Whatever jare! I’ve had it with Mummy and K. I went into my room and picked up my phone to call Daniel. I had promised him I would call. “Hey you!” I greeted. “Love of my life!” “For your mind.” He started to laugh. “So how did the wedding planning go?” “It went well, thanks.” “Good! Get enough tips to plan ours.” I rolled my eyes. “Please stop.” “Stop what?” “You know what I’m talking about.” “Ok.” he answered coldly. I was burnt. Why did he give in so fast? Mcheew! Didn’t he know I was just fronting? My phone beeped to indicate a waiting call. “I’ll call you back Daniel. I have an incoming call.” “Alright, I’ll wait for your call.” It was my aunt Toke. She wanted me to give grandma the phone so she could speak to her. I rushed to my mum’s room. I was about to knock when I started to eavesdrop. I hung up quickly and began to listen to their conversation. “Omodara, you have to take it easy o! All this explanation you have given me isn’t enough. Yes, her father was rushing home from Abuja to see you and take another flight to London because of the emergency call he got concerning Shalewa. He didn’t get to tell you what it was before the plane crash. I am amazed you haven’t even found out from Shalewa, instead you have judged her and blamed her for her father’s date …” I pressed my ears to the door and listened harder. The next thing I heard made me almost pass out. I ran into my room and buried my head under the pillow. “Oh my God! Oh my …” I began to sob. “Ha! Mama Shalewa….ha!” Daniel was calling me, I couldn’t get myself together to pick. When I finally did, he knew there was something wrong and his reaction was “I’m coming over to your place” “Daniel…” I started to argue Before I could say anything else, he hung up. What just happened? What the hell is happening to the family I used to know?

Episode 9 [ghana razzmataz] I toyed with the seat belt as I watched Daniel pay the gate pass into Elegushi beach, it had been a while I had been to the beach. I wasn’t suitably dressed but I didn’t mind, I just needed to get away from home. Daniel parked the car and we strolled towards a tent. I tugged at his hand like a little child. I was in a state I couldn’t figure out. “Are you ok Shalewa?” Daniel stopped to face me “I’ll be fine” he kissed my lips. I would have stopped him but I wasn’t in the right state of mind. After one year and a half of living in England, I couldn’t still come to terms with PDA (public display of affection), right now, I didn’t mind. I just wanted to be held. As if he could read my thoughts, Daniel held me in a warm embrace; I could smell his after shave of musk mixed with bergamot. He kissed me again and this time I kissed him back. “Get a room” a passerby screamed at us. We disentangled and began to giggle like teenagers. We continued to stroll until we found a place to sit. “I won’t apologize to you” Daniel said. I looked into his handsome face and smiled “apologize for what?” “For kissing you” I smiled. “I don’t need an apology” “Good” he said pulling me closer. “So are you ready to talk?” I sighed “no Daniel, I am not. I need to figure some things out first” I looked at him and allowed my palm run down his face “is that okay?” Yes, whenever you are ready” he kissed my forehead. “I don’t want to be selfish but I can’t help but ask if this is it?” I smiled. I didn’t know what to say, so I said nothing. Daniel didn’t say a word either. We just held on to each other and watched people run around the beach. When it started to get really dark, I told Daniel it was time to go home. I arrived home to meet Grandma looking worried. “Omoshalewa, it is not polite to leave the house and not tell anyone where you are going, you left your phone in the house and couldn’t even leave a note.” I murmured an apology and walked pass her. “Shalewa, is everything okay?” she followed me. It wasn’t her fault so I paused to smile at her. I gave her a hug and another fake smile “yes ma, am just very tired” “oya, go to bed then, I’ll see you tomorrow” I said goodnight to the twins as I walked pass the dining room. “shalewa, where have you been?” I looked back to answer my mum “had to rush down to the office to finish some work” “Hmm! Take e easy o, your food is in the microwave” Mummy said “I’m not hungry ma, thank you” “Alright then, goodnight” “Goodnight Ma” I was left with my thoughts. Tomorrow was another workday. I forced myself to sleep even though it was a mission impossible. I needed an advice and I needed it fast. The next day, I woke up with eye bags. I barely tasted sleep. I had a wash, got dressed and left for work. I left at an early hour when everyone was still asleep. I couldn’t look them all in the eye. Daniel called and asked that we go out to have breakfast before work began; I declined and decided to bury my head in work instead. Lydia was bombarding me with gist about her friend’s wedding, she was also trying to find out if I was going to invite her to Omotunde and Labib’s wedding, bla bla bla, shoot bird mama fly story…..this girl can talk oo. Mr. Oga saved me before I perished from this unwanted gist, not even with the way I was feeling. “Good Morning Mr. Williams” we chorused “Good Morning” he looked at us grinning like the devil. “I have good news and bad news” We got up and walked towards him. Na so my heart begin dey do 007, abi something don do our contract? “Good news is we are travelling to Ghana” Lydia and I looked at each other and smiled. We had been looking forward to the travelling. “The bad news is, we leave this evening” Lydia’s countenance changed. She started to argue “but sir…” Mr Oga cut her short “when you asked to be placed on this project, you promised heaven and earth, well, this is it” he faced me “Shalewa, any objection?” “No sir, I’m fine with it, but we will need to go home to pack and we will also need the itinerary” I looked at Lydia for support. She was lost in thoughts. “Travels department have all the details for that, plus you guys can take the morning off to get set. We leave by 3.00pm. All allowances will be sorted by the account department. I apologize for the short notice but it is of great urgency. Shalewa, come with me to my office, Lydia, you know how we do it, please see to things and head home”. I followed him into his office. He apologized again and gave the necessary instructions for the trip. I left the office and went home excited. It was my time away from all the insanity. The time came and the driver took us to the airport. We boarded the plane to Ghana and I found myself seated beside Mr. Oga. Lydia was seated a couple of seats away from us. Weird! I began to think of my family drama as the plane took off. I stole a glance at Mr. Oga, his eyes were closed and he looked like he was meditating. I looked away and went back to my thoughts. I closed my eyes and allowed my thoughts envelope me. I woke up to catch Mr. Oga staring at me. He stared harder as though he didn’t care that I caught him. “Sir…” I started to talk “What?” He whispered “You are staring at me” I whispered back “Make me stop” he teased I looked away. He turned my face so I could face him. “Lydia…” “Forget about her. Go to the restroom” “What?” I asked looking confused “Wait for me in the restroom” “Ok” I stood up and walked towards the restroom. My heart was beating really fast. Mr. Oga came into the small restroom. “Sir…” He stopped me with a kiss. I wanted to pass out. I held on to him and kissed him as hard as I could. He ran his palm up underneath my blouse and pressed my back against the restroom wall. His breathing was ragged and rhythmic. I held on to him and allowed my palm run down the back of his properly groomed hair. He unhooked….. “Shalewa, Shalewa..Wake up! We are here” I opened my eyes and heard the pilot asking passengers take their seats if they were not seated and fasten their seat belts. “Are you alright?” Mr. Oga asked I cleared my throat “yes, I am” “You look like you were having one hell of a dream” I smiled…you don’t wanna know, you really don’t wanna know. If I was a man, I swear I’d have woken up with a bulge. Gud murnin peepole, aw was ur 9t??? Episode 10 [qhana razzmataz ii] “Yes, and a bottle of your best red wine. Thank you.” This is me, ordering a bottle of red wine in this five-star hotel located in Accra. My plan for the night was to drink and drink some more. I wasn’t much of a drunk; at least one can tell from the club episode of Mr. Oga and me. However, on certain days I find myself taking shelter in alcohol. I simply envelope myself in its intoxication and forget how I started with the first sip. This night, I was going to get drunk and sleep off. Mr. Oga didn’t need us until 1.00pm. If there would be any hangover, it should have passed by then. “Room service will be with you in 2 minutes.” The receptionist at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra said. The hotel is the most beautiful ever — well next to Edwardian Radisson hotel, London or maybe not. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind so I really couldn’t judge. There were three rooms in the wing where we were lodged. I picked up the phone and dialled Daniel’s number. “Hi Daniel, it’s Shalewa.” “Hey babe, how was the trip?” “Fine. Just thought I should let you know we have arrived. Wanna turn in now.” “What? Day is still young bozo!” I smiled at his attempt to cheer me up. “Tired.” “Hmm! You sound really down. I really wish you didn’t have to go on this trip.” “It’s fine; I really need this getaway.” “I can reach you on this number?” “Yes you can, I’ll call you again.” “I’ll call before you do, Shalewa, if you are ready to talk; I will be here…waiting…patiently.” “Alright, bye!” “Bye dearie.” I heard a knock on the door and got up to answer it. It was room service with my dinner and wine. I gave the young man a tip (for my mind, I form ‘mamas’). He thanked me and left. I was surprised Lydia had not come to disturb me. I opened the covered plate and threw a piece of shrimp into my mouth. I chewed away to the bathroom and turned on the heater. Thoughts of grandma and mum’s discussion crept into my head once again. I stood under the shower and allowed the water run down my body. I was there for over 10 minutes and water had mixed up; I tasted salt in the water. I couldn’t stop crying. No more sobbing, I said to myself. I turned the shower off and wiped my body clean with a white towel the hotel had provided. I wore my lacy bra and matching pant just to make myself happy. I hadn’t worn them in a while; it was the last thing my father had bought me. Funny! We were in a mall in England when I saw this red and black lace lingerie staring at me. I stood in front of it and looked at the price tag: £50. I turned back sadly and ranted about why it wasn’t on sales. Long story brought to an abrupt end, my sweet father paid for it. End of story. Now I’m here in this beautiful hotel, wearing this £50 lingerie with my silk robe, about to open this bottle of wine and drink myself to sleep. Maybe I’ll dream; I’ll dream about my father. I popped open the wine, poured some of it into my glass, toasted to an unfair life and began to drink. Half way down, I began to feel really tipsy. The room felt hot all of a sudden. I took off my robe and switched on the air-condition. Just then, somebody knocked the door and I got up to open it. My robe! I glanced at it and just strode on to open the door in my lingerie. There was no one. I stepped out into the passage and looked around. I was about to go in when the door shut itself. Ok, I must be drunk…hehehehehe! I’m wearing my favourite lingerie, only my lingerie and I just locked myself out. It must be the wine, the door can’t be locked. I pushed. It was still locked. Even though I was tipsy, I knew the implication of running around naked. Think! Think! Think! I began to poke myself back to reality. The only option was to knock on Lydia’s door and call the hotel from there. So I walked to Lydia’s door and knocked. “Lydia! Lydia! Open up.” I could not shout, I couldn’t risk Mr. Oga coming out. I sighed with relief as I heard the door open. “Oh thank God. I locked myself out.” I looked up to look at Lydia as I attempted to run past her into the room, only to discover that it wasn’t Lydia. Breaking news: I am one of those ‘intelligent stupid’ people that cannot tell their right from their left. I must have knocked on the wrong door. “Oh my God!” I jumped on the bed and took cover under the duvet. He couldn’t talk. He just had his hands opened and was staring at me like he had seen a ghost. “Shalewa, are you drunk? You are half …” He shut the door quickly. “I am tipsy, not drunk…” I stammered. “I thought this was Lydia’s room.” I cleared my throat and continued “Ehm, I locked myself out.” He walked into the bathroom and came back with a robe. He left it on the bed and turned around. Perfect gentleman. Ideas! Ideas!! I was tipsy enough to be silly but I fought the devil. I stood up and lost my balance, I was on the floor before I could call my ‘oriki’. “Oh my God, are you alright? You must be really tipsy.” Femi screamed as he rushed to lift me up. I started to cry. “Are you hurt?” I answered with more tears. At a point I think I was wailing. Femi rocked me like a baby. When i finally talked, I heard myself pouring out everything I should have told Daniel. ”Mama Shalewa isn’t my mother. She is not my mother. I have called her mother for 26 years of my life and she is not my mother.” “What are you mumbling about?” Femi asked quietly. I looked at his cute face with tears streaming down my eyes. “I have known only one mother since I was born and just yesterday, I found out she isn’t my mother. I think she was my nanny and I think she isn’t legally married to my dad; and I think that is why the lawyer is holding on to my dad’s will.” “Wow!!! How did you find out?” He asked as he helped me wear the robe and carried me to the bed. I felt loved. I think I smiled. I think I did. “I was eavesdropping”, I whispered. He smiled. “This is a serious discussion, so I’m going to let you sleep and tomorrow, when you are in the right frame of mind, we will talk, ok?” I nodded my head. “I have to get to the reception to see to getting your door open, I’ll be back.” I think he kissed my forehead or maybe I’m just tipsy. I didn’t know when he got back; neither did I know how I happened to wake up in my hotel room the next morning. It’s Tuesday morning and I just told Mr. Oga my secret. Mr. Oga had seen me in my sexiest lingerie, once tipsy, twice embarrassed. I was trying to get over yesterday’s ‘non-rendezvous’ when I heard a knock. I got up to answer and was expecting a quality hangover; luckily, there was none. “Who is it?” “It’s Femi.” My heart stopped. Episode 11 [soul deep] Wealth at times could be a curse. Being blessed with good looks could be an additional one. The height of it is being responsible — women take you for granted, not all of them though. I have seen it all — Virgin Mary laced with self deceit and obsession, whores, gold diggers, mummy’s girls — name it. Relationships are tiring; so these days, I rarely bother myself about going into one until recently. I was bored after work so I allowed my friends indulge me in clubbing, which was where I first met her. She had the eyes of an angel. I think I was able to visualize a halo on her head. I could see she was struggling in her mind on whether she wanted a drink or not — her friends were obviously the fun type. There was something about her I couldn’t place. She caught me staring and looked away shyly. Somehow, amidst all the music and fun she seemed to be having, she looked sad to me. She tried to conceal it but I could see it. For the second time in my 34 years on earth, I felt like I could figure out the opposite sex. Lately, I’ve been fighting hard within on whether I will ever settle or just keep entertaining myself. My mother had tried her matchmaking skills on me twice; none had worked. The latest was one of the shareholder’s daughter at work. She was all over me and for the sake of being nice, I allowed her. We have been intimate on two occasions. Don’t judge; women are queens of seduction. I would have loved to start something with her. I would have, until I met her. She had the cutest smile. I had heard and watched her laugh. Her attempt to stop laughing usually ended up like a screeching stereo. It made me want to laugh myself. She had the longest straight legs I’ve ever set my eyes on. It wasn’t really the things of the physical that was the basis of this attraction; it was that sadness. I needed to get close to her, just to look into her eyes — yeah yeah, I know I sound creepy right now — don’t blame me, it’s not everyday a man experiences love at first sight, but is this love? I know I had this urge to take care of her, to be there for her…what English word can describe this sudden rush of emotion? I ignored the waitress who was practising her high school flirting skills on me. All I asked for was a shot of Baileys and not a shot of insolent juvenile-driven flirtation. What was she doing in a club anyway? How old — maybe 16!? I drifted onto the dance floor absent-mindedly and as fate would have it, she and her friends were dancing. Should I go dig it with her? She turned her back. I seized that opportunity and held her from behind. Honestly, if she had slapped me, I would have said ‘thank you’. I am going against what I believe in. I decided to blame it on the alcohol. She didn’t slap me; instead she danced with me. I tried all my moves — the Azonto dance, the Swing, Alingo — everything. I think I caught her giggling. Maybe she was tipsy. She looked it. “My name is Femi”, I shouted on impulse. “What?” She asked. I told her my name again. Before I could say Jack Robinson, she turned her back to me. I had to see her face; I needed to know her name. She was dancing really slowly; the silly DJ just had to change the song at this time. I wasn’t looking for a one night stand; it was more than that. I was intrigued, so I made her turn so we could look at each other. I embraced her for a while. Impulse!!! She opened her mouth to say something but her friend came and said they had to go. The action that came afterwards can be defined as amusement laced with disgust: wanna know what happened? She kissed me and before I could react, she threw up on me! What do you call that? My Gucci shoes were ruined. I had to carry her to the car. I wasn’t upset; I wasn’t. Her friends wouldn’t give me any details of her. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be. So I woke up to reality and decided to forget about her, only this world is as small as a mustard seed. I’m walking to her room right now; I’m going to find out all about her. I could explain the sadness I saw that night; at least the little story I heard last night was enough. It was time to get my game on. It was time to let fate play its game. It was time to stop interfering. So I knocked on her door. “Who is it?” She asked. “It’s Femi.” A toast to a new chapter.

Episode 12 [dilenma] I stared at Femi after I let him in. He was wearing a pair of jeans trousers and a sweat shirt. The smell of his after-shave filled the air. He walked in and sat on the only chair in the hotel room. I pulled my robe closer to myself and took a seat on the bed. He was disturbingly quiet. I stole a glance at him hoping he would say something, but he didn’t. Hmm! Abi something happened last night? “So,” He cleared his throat. I looked at him immediately. “Are you better?” He asked. I smiled and answered, “I guess so.” He got up and sat on the bed. “Shalewa…” “Yes, Mr. Williams?” The air around us had changed. It was filled with…I don’t know, but it was different. The kind you see in movies where a guy and a lady are about to have their first kiss. I caught him smile. He cleared his throat again. Haba! You get cough? Oga talk na! I was getting impatient. “Let’s talk about what got you upset yesterday”, he said as he stared at me. I looked away shyly. “You look pale, Shalewa.” He got up and sat very close to me. My heart skipped. If he tried kissing me….holy Moses….green light…I see green! “Are you alright?” He asked me. “Yes, just a little bit tired.” “No hang-over?” He grinned. “No.” I smiled. “So does she know — I mean does your step mum know you found out?” “No she doesn’t. Nobody knows I know.” “You wanna tell me everything?” I nodded. Of course I wanted to. It was eating me up and I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I needed to let it all out. “I think my father left most of his properties to me. He didn’t have time to adjust his will.” “Wow! That’s a serious one. How come the will has never been read? Its really dangerous for you; anything could have happened.” “Yea…I heard my grand mum…her mum…” I was starting to sound confusing. “My step-mother’s mum I mean…” I smiled at reality. It was really starting to sink in. All these years when daddy would quarrel with her over not buying me the same things she got the twins or not taking me out when she took the twins with her — she had been nice, tremendously nice. At least she made sure daddy sent me off to do my masters. The twins didn’t get that luxury…but wait! Daddy died before they could! Couldn’t she afford it? A lot was going on in my head. “Shalewa, are you here at all?” He touched my arm. I shivered. I looked at him and could only make out a whisper. “Yeah.” I don’t know who went to whom, but somehow I ended up in his arms. He rocked me like a baby and this time, I wasn’t drunk, he had kissed my forehead yesterday. He did the same now. “I’ll take care of you Shalewa. I know this sounds awkward because it’s coming from your boss, but ever since that ni…” That was when the stupid phone decided to ring. I almost hissed with disgust. Show spoiler. “You wanna get that?” He asked. “Yes.” I reached for the phone. “Hello?” It was from the reception. “Hello!” I heard a male voice at the receiver’s end. “Daniel?” “Surprise!” I looked at Femi who was staring at a magazine. “What are you doing here?” I whispered. “Well, the company sent me. Looks like we have to do either Yvonne Nelson or Jackie Appiah. I’m here to make sure we recruit the right person. I’ll be up in a bit.” “Ehm, you can’t come to my room.” I stole a glance at Femi again. This time, our eyes met and he smiled. I managed to smile back. “Lydia is in my room…” Okay, wait! Why was I lying? Daniel wasn’t even my boyfriend and neither was Femi…professional ethics I guess. Omo, this mess I’m about to get myself into….drama, drama, drama… “Ok. I’ll stop by at Femi’s room then. I’ll see you soon.” “Okay.” I hung up and faced Mr. Oga. “That was Mr. Daniel sir. He said the company sent him.” He looked at me suspiciously. “I’m aware of that, but…why did he call you?” Oya think o Shalewa…think! “Ehmmm, I guess he tried reaching you on your extension, but you’re here…” I made a face. If he knew me well, he would know I was lying. I only made faces when I lied. “I guess I better go back to my room then. We don’t want anybody making the wrong assumptions, yeah?” I nodded in agreement. “And Shalewa, we haven’t finished our discussion.” “Yes”, I smiled. He winked at me and left the room. I was left alone to deliberate on how to handle this drama. I was in love with Mr. Oga, yet I felt something for Daniel. I went into the bathroom and took a shower. I came out and called Omotunde. She put Omoyeni and I on a conference call and I narrated my ordeal to them carefully leaving out the ‘maternal bumdigidi’ out of it. I wasn’t ready for that. “I can’t believe you got drunk!” Omoyeni screamed. “I didn’t jor, I was tipsy.” “Hahaha! You wanted to seduce the poor man”, Omotunde joked. We all laughed. “So, what are you going to do about Daniel?” Omotunde asked. “Because me I like him…that Femi that won’t even own up to knowing you; you better give yourself brain and go for Daniel.” She added. “Omotunde, you can’t choose for her, you know?” Omoyeni said. “Guys, guys…thanks for the love. Truth is I’m confused. I think I’m in love with Femi, I also feel something for Daniel, so its really complicated.” I interrupted Omoyeni… “Hmm! Besides he did ask for your number at the club, we just didn’t give it to him.” Omoyeni concluded her mini protest with this. “What?! He asked for my number? How come you guys never told me? I thought…I thought…” I began to stammer. I was seething with rage right now. See these babes…haba! “Drama!” Omoyeni shouted. “By the way guys, I’ll be resigning soon to join my dad’s firm.” She said changing the topic. I guess I’ll let it ride this time. What is done is done. “Finally!” I shouted. Even though e no reach my mind. Not like I wasn’t happy for her, but how dare she hide this from me…and that Omotunde too! Anyway, Omoyeni’s dad is one of the best litigation lawyers in Nigeria. He has one of the best firms with two partners who were Senior Advocates. It was about time she rolled with the big guns. We talked some more before ending the call. I started to think about my dilemma. I got dressed and waited for the time to clock one, but instead it crawled. Lydia came into the room and saved me from the wait…only she had some news. What could it be? I looked at her giggling. “Spill!” I said, almost screaming.

Episode 13 We chose Jackie..Yeah Jackie Appiah. I don’t particularly watch Ghanian movies, well, I do sometimes. The last I saw had John Dumelo doing a girl naked, it was shot in such a way his bum was captured moving ‘up’ and ‘down’. There were also boobs to show and more sex scenes than one would see in a Hollywood settings. To be frank, I kind of liked that Jackie was chosen. After the meeting, she invited us all to a party in a club…..it was a party of one of the Ghanaian celebrities. Mr. Oga thought that it would be nice for networking and PR for the film festival, so we all had no choice than to go. She also would tag along; I wonder what her department sent her here for. Ha! I haven’t said…Lydia’s big gist…she was here, I mean the girl from the canteen that had been rumoured to be Mr. Oga’s girlfriend. Lydia told me she had seen her come out of Oga’s room and she looked suspicious. It made me start to wonder if Lydia was right and if they were really dating. It kind of broke my heart but I convinced myself not to jump into conclusions. Lydia and I did not have what to wear to the party so we went out of the hotel to buy. First thing I noticed about Ghana is how clean the streets are and the people were not as black as I thought. We bought our party wears and returned to the hotel. Ehn ehn, Shalewa, wait sef! You never give me gist about you and Oga Dan o, una don start?” That was Lydia poke nosing as usual. “Start wetin?” I eyed her playfully. She slapped my arms and went on “talk na” “Hmm! I still dey study am” She started to laugh “e resemble book, abeg hold him before another girl sweeps him away o, don’t you know he is one of the eligible bachelors in Lagos?” I started to laugh as I collapsed on the bed. “Ehn ehn, what will you now say about Mr. Williams?” I asked in an attempt to hear more gists about him. “That one…”She rolled her eyes “that one go marry sha?” She started to unwrap the ‘kenken’ we bought from our trip away from the hotel. I got up to bring out the disposable plate we had also bought. “I heard this thing make sense die…” I smiled. We began to eat in silence. I was about to ask Lydia if she had a boyfriend when I heard a knock on my hotel door. I was scared it may be Femi. I didn’t want to arouse any unnecessary suspicion. Radio katanga was in the radar. I wiped my palm with a serviette and walked towards the door. I looked through the peep hole and saw that it was Daniel. I breathed relief and opened the door. “Hi!” I smiled sheepishly “Hey!” I let him in and shut the door. Lydia wiped her palms and got up immediately “good day Sir” “Lydia baby, how na?” “Oga I dey o” she turned to me “Shally baby, we go see later” she winked. Daniel had seen her but she didn’t care. Lydia was a case study. Daniel hugged me as soon as she shut the door. I stayed in his arms a while longer than I should have; only because I was doing a comparism, in his arms, it felt like a cuddle, in Femi’s arms, I felt safe, protected. I stopped thinking and came out of his embrace. He pulled me towards the bed and we laid beside each other. This is the closest we’ve ever been…in a room…beside each other. I was scared. I wasn’t a loose girl and technically, I wasn’t a V anymore. I wasn’t scared of being vulnerable; I was just scared of the outcome. Ok, ‘am talking rubbish. My first experience with sex left a terrible mark on me, I haven’t had a boyfriend since like forever and Daniel wasn’t even my boyfriend. I am attracted to him but I am more attracted to Femi. I wouldn’t want any deep romance between us right now…everything was complicated. “Penny for your thought” Daniel touched my nose. We looked into each other’s eyes for a while. I tore my eyes away from his. Before I could say Jack Robinson, he kissed me. I didn’t kiss him back neither did I pull away. I was still thinking of whether to kiss him back when I heard a knock on the door. I pulled my lips away and asked who it was. “Oh shit!” Daniel swore and got up immediately. I signaled to him to be quiet. I went to the door, opened it and stepped outside. My heart was beating really fast. What is this? What is the drama about? Why can’t it be simple? Love isn’t supposed to be difficult… “Hello Sir” “It’s Femi, my name is Femi” he smiled. I shut the door. “Do you have your card; we don’t want you locking yourself out again?” I smiled “yes I do” We both went quiet. I broke the silence. “I would invite you in but Lydia is in there” I lied. Yes I lied again. I’m ashamed. “It’s alright, only wanted to check up on you, I promise we’ll have that talk, ok?” “Ok. What time should we be ready for the party?” He closed his eyes in deep thought “7 should be fine” “Alright Sir” “Hmm! I’m not that old you know” he smiled “You are my boss, that’s old” He started to laugh and then covered his mouth, he whispered “Lydia” I faked a smile. Wait sef, what if Lydia comes to the passage. Ha! Time to run. “Let me go get ready” “Alright, see you at 7″. With that, he left. I rushed back to the room. Daniel had dozed off. I watched him sleep for a while. How would I break the heart of such a good man? How? The party had all the Ghana celeb. It was an eclectic mix of the Ghana entertainment industry, the big boys and ladies in town, gents and ladies from various sector of the labor force. My short black dress accentuated my curves. Lydia said I looked like Delilah trying to taunt Samson. Lydia had chosen a lavender maxi dress. It was stylish and really sat well on her. Daniel had worn a shirt and a jeans, casual but nice. Mr Oga…sighs! White shirt, bow tie, lovely pants, monkey jacket and a panama…he looked really good. Ha! The ‘she’….she looked really fabulous. I don’t wanna describe what she wore but I know she got head turning. She flirted shamefully with Femi and held his hands everywhere she went. She knew all the Ghana stars and was everywhere. I began to feel uncomfortable and decided to look around for Daniel or Lydia. They had both gone to get drinks and had disappeared into thin air…o ga o…sighs! I walked passed Jackie and we exchange pleasantries. She introduced me to Van Vicker whom she was having a chat with. He looked shorter than the movies portrayed. I left them to continue my search for those silly heads. I finally found Lydia chatting or should I say flirting with John Dumelo…silly girl. Where was Daniel…oh! There he was getting a drink from the bar, I walked up to him and stopped abruptly..What the hell. An idiot just grabbed Daniel’s butt….as in a guy just…omg!!! Daniel turned to face the guy…wahala go shele…I imagined Daniel slapping the hell out of him…What won’t we see in Ghana?

Episode 14 [let's dance] It was really difficult finding the terminal for the train heading to Grantham from Doncaster. I silently prayed I would not miss my train. I finally found the terminal. I asked the white lady who had her hands in her coat if I was on the right spot, she confirmed it. It was freezing and my coat wasn’t warm enough. I was headed to Lincolnshire for a party. I never really enjoyed parties in England; the only reason why I was going is because I promised my cousin. I got on the train and dozed off. I woke up in time to alight @ Grantham. I got on another train to the final destination, Lincoln. All this for party? Peju was waiting to pick me up at the station. “Cuzzo, see as you thin, your breast come big like balloon” Peju said I laughed and hugged her. “Cousin of life, you no fit change. So whose party is it o?” I said as we walked towards Peju’s car. “Shalewa, you no dey read your mail, na Willie Willie na” “Ehn, that gay boy?” I squeezed my face. “Chai Shalewa! No be gay na! na rumor, e be bi-sexual” “I swear, you no gather, wetin be the difference between gay and bi?” We both laughed and kept quiet afterwards. We arrived in Peju’s shared apartment with a Nigerian lady, Toke and a Kenyan, Kuda. We all gisted about English boys, tax, England’s school system, shopping and we alternated between discussing about the latest jams in Naija and listening to Kuda talk about Kenya. We showered and dressed up for the party. It was a house party and it was rumored that JJC and Dbanj may show up. I won’t be surprised if they do. Willie Willie is from a rich family. He threw money around and was known to try out different things; he wore the latest and drove the latest cars. He was a British citizen and was spoilt to the brim. His latest was ‘men’ and he had never denied it, if it was true, no one knew. My first meeting with Willie Willie had been in Lagos. Peju came for a short trip to Nigeria and as usual, she wanted to groove. She had made me accompany her to Lekki to visit a friend that was also visiting from England. It was Willie Willie. He had flirted with me shamelessly and had called me few days after asking if I would hang out with him. Peju told me to have fun but not to take him serious. We hung out few times; with him wearing his studs, blings on his neck like a dog leash and yeah, his constant attempt to kiss me and squeeze my balloon boobs. I stopped picking his calls afterwards. He had gone back to England and I didn’t see him until recently. By then, news about rich Willie wasn’t ‘news’ to me. If he had turned gay….well, good riddance to bad rubbish!!! We arrived at the party and there was food and drinks everywhere. It was a mixture of whites and blacks and it looked like it was going to be fun. There was a stripper’s pole in the middle of the room and some girls were swinging, half naked. Where they going to get paid? In one corner, some boys were sniffing what appeared to be Cocaine. I wasn’t comfortable with this so I whispered to peju “cuzzo, me I no like this party o…Looks too dangerous, I don’t think I can even eat or drink anything here, it could be laced with drugs o” “Haba, relax Shalewa, it can’t be that bad” Peju left for the dance floor alongside Kuda and Toke. I saw Willie Willie and nodded. He walked up to me “Shally Bobby” I hissed and walked away. “Chill out babes, ‘am just messing with you” he said in his British accent. I smiled “Good to see you” he added. We hugged and disentangled almost immediately. I was about to reply when a guy who was wearing a very tight straight jeans, a funny looking shirt and a voice like a song bird, he talked with his nose…this one don tey for here “who is this Will?” He said touching Willie willie’s arm. Ha! What more proof does one need? Gay ni bobo yi mehn. “My friend Shalewa from Nigeria” Willie Willie answered “shalewa, this is Robert, he’s from South Africa” “Hello Robert” he nodded. I swear I think he eyed me. I could also swear I heard him ask if I was ‘the Shalewa’. Hmm!!! I excused myself and tried to find Peju. I found her with her whitey boyfriend. I was really thirsty and needed to drink something. I asked Toke if we could go out to Tesco to buy. She didn’t see a need to. She went to the host and asked for a non-laced drink. Willie willie laughed and asked us what we thought of him. I was finally able to get a drink. Later on, I began to feel dizzy; Peju said something about leaving for a pub with her boo. She would be back to pick us up..Kuda was gisting away with Toke. Willie Willie appeared out of nowhere and told me I looked like I wanted to sleep. He and Robert took me to a room upstairs. I couldn’t make out what they were talking about. I think I’ve been drugged. He dumped me on the bed. He and Robert began to kiss each other. Omg!!! I tried to scream but nothing came out. Willie Willie began to fondle my boobs; I tried to push him off. Robert pulled my skirt and tight down. I struggled with him; he punched me on the thighs… “Pleaaassseeeeee….”I managed to say They went back to kissing and touching each other and making horrible noises, Willie Willie came back to me, he pulled my panties and attempted to penetrate… “Arrghh! Bitch is a virgin” he shouted “Oh Will, please let me go first, I’ve never done a virgin, let me find out if she’ll be as tight as your asshole” He let him and afterwards, he helped himself. I woke up in the hospital. Peju found me almost dead with the whole house deserted. I had been overdosed, raped and beaten. Willie Willie was nowhere to be found. He had rented the house from a broke Ugandan for 1 day. The police only got involved because the hospital called them. Every attempt to get someone tell them about Willie Willie was a dead end. Peju gave them all the information she could, her mum cautioned her in Yoruba not to reveal too much. Why? Peju’s mum had called my father. He was in Abuja and would get on the next plane to Lagos to inform my mum in person, after which he would fly to England immediately. ”Shalewa, please be strong for me, I will find that lunatic and kill him, I love you and I forgive you for taking such a risk, you would have died Shalewa, you would have…see you soon”. Those were my father’s last words. He died in a plane crash on his way to Lagos. Now fate had me staring at Daniel punch Willie Willie on the face, he added two hot slaps. My heart began to pump really fast, rapist… Finally, we meet again…I opened my mouth to caution Daniel, this one is mine. Daniel’s words beat mine…I froze…Oh my God!!!

Episode 15 [SHADOWS OF D PAST] “Hi.” I said to Willie-Willie as he toyed with his face that had just been slapped. He looked at me and walked past as though he didn’t recognize me. It can’t be…this fool won’t play smart with me. Daniel came to my side. “I’m so sorry you had to see that. Can you imagine such rubbish?” He dusted his palms as if he had just dug them in a bin of dust. I had lost my voice. The shock of seeing Willie-Willie and he acting like he could not recognize me rattled me. “Are you alright?” Daniel asked. “Yes”, I managed to whisper. “Let’s say we get out of here and go back to the hotel.” I thought about it and weighed my options. Justice or a chance of romance? Naaaaa, justice! At least for now. “No, let us stay. Moreover I am here to work, remember? I wouldn’t want my boss searching everywhere for me.” “Yeah, you are right on that. I almost forgot why we are here.” “H.R.” I teased. He finally grinned. I had never seen him get angry before, so it was quite amazing to see him lose it. “Shalewa, you still haven’t told me what happened?” “Please, let’s not talk about that now; let’s talk about you — more about you. You never really told me why a handsome man like you is still single.” “Hmm! Well…” “Meanwhile,” I cut him short. “Is he really…” I pointed at Willie-Willie. “Yes,” he nodded. “Wow! Who would have thought?” “Well, we all do have them.” “You have a gay brother?” “Hell no!!! Moreover, I’m an only child.” He stuck out his tongue. I smiled at his show of childishness. “Can we at least take a stroll, pleaseeeee?” “Alright.” I said. He took my hand and led the way. I felt like I was being watched so I looked back. Femi was staring at us. I took my eyes away immediately and pretended I didn’t see him. After all… We walked towards the garden and found a spot to sit. I was so overwhelmed from the drama that I lost myself and allowed my head rest on his shoulder. “I have a daughter. She’s five.” He said. After all the bomb-shells of the week, this didn’t move me. I think I’m numb. “Go on”, I whispered. “Her mother was my first love and she still has my heart.” “So why are you not together?” “She let my mother get to her. Being an only child isn’t easy. My mother is like my first wife…she is like a leech, she wants to size up every girl I bring home and so…she got to Khadijat.” “I see. So where is your daughter?” “She lives with my mum and I.” “What! You still live with your mum?” Well, what can I say? She’s lonely without me and she refused to re-marry after my father’s death. She took care of me, sent me to one of the best universities in the world…” He began to laugh. “There was this time in the States; I was seeing this girl, Sheila. I brought her to my house for the first time. My mum was home in Nigeria, or she was supposed to be home. We spoke 5 days before this particular day. Anyway, I was making out with Sheila…” Daniel was holding back his laughter. “And she had half her clothing off.” Now he was gesticulating. “My pants was down and I was about to…you know.” He started to laugh really hard. “I heard someone exclaim and scream my name…it was my mum!” I started to laugh too. “She came to the States without informing me with the excuse that she was unable to reach me on phone, so she took the next available flight. She let herself in and….anyway, that was the only shot I got with Sheila.” We both kept laughing. “You’re so beautiful.” he whispered. I stopped laughing immediately. Not like he has never said it before, but this time it sounded really genuine. “I’m sorry I’ve never told you about Dara.” I looked confused. “Dara is my daughter.” “Oh!” I said. “It’s alright, I forgive you.” “You do?” I nodded. “Can I kiss you? Please.” How many more kisses? How can I make up my mind? How? It was time to talk to the girls. Not with this new discovery of Willie-Willie sef. “Ehmmm…” I blinked uncontrollably. He pulled me up and we walked to a deserted underground car park. He rested my back against a door and looked into my eyes. “Omoshalewa Benson, I am falling deeply in love with you. I know you have stuffs you are not sharing: secrets…but I want you to know it’s okay to talk to me. I will take care of you; love you, if only you’ll let me…” He kissed me. I tried kissing him back but I couldn’t. All of a sudden, I couldn’t breathe — images of Willie-Willie and Robert came back into my head — I lost it. I pushed him away and screamed. Daniel covered my mouth and began to shake me. “Shalewa, Shalewa…look at me…look at me…what is it?” I broke down in tears. “He raped me! That son-of-a-bitch raped me.” “Look at me. Look at me Shalewa!” He held my face. “It’s okay. I won’t hurt you.” He wiped my tears. “Talk to me, who raped you?” I started to cry. I cried for that night. I cried for my father’s death. It was different from all the tears from my past. This was comforting. My psychologist had told me, it would take a day like this to help me let go. Finally, I could let go — I could accept my father’s death. I could let go of the guilt. It wasn’t me; it was Willie-Willie’s fault. He made me an orphan and he had to pay. I know what I must do to get my pound of flesh. “Who raped you?” He asked again. “Femi’s brother.” “What?” he gave me a funny look? I started to shake uncontrollably. He was about to carry me when we heard a noise. “Who is there?” Femi asked. He looked around but found no one. We heard someone run. The footsteps sounded like it belonged to a woman. I could faintly hear the click-clock of shoes with heels. Daniel held me. “Tell me everything”

Episode 16 [a hunter's prey] I now know the definition of complication. Complication can be defined as when you are in love with the brother of a guy who raped you and killed your father. Dilemma is deciding whether this affects what you feel for him. Daniel was quiet. Disturbingly quiet. I had told him everything and he had turned cold afterwards. It was scary. We walked back to the party in silence. I wish I could read his thoughts. We got into the party and he excused himself. I saw Linda waving to me so I walked up to her. “You, where you waka go? Na so Oga dey look for you.” Linda said. I smiled. “Wetin do your eyes? You go smoke gbana?” Now I started to laugh. “Anyway, Oga introduced me to his cute brother; he wanted to introduce you too”. I stopped laughing. She pulled me towards Femi and that rapist. “Sir, look who I found.” “Oh! Hi, Shalewa. I was starting to think someone kidnapped you.” He smiled and continued. “This is my brother, Gbolahan Williams.” I looked into his eyes. There was no hint of recognition. Impossible! “Hello Shalewa! My brother speaks highly of you.” His British accent had not changed. “Oh! Were you the guy that got punched at the bar?” That was what came out of my mouth. God saved him. I would have called him Willie-Willie and thrown him off balance. He smiled and whispered something to his brother and walked away. He asked Linda to go to the bar with him. I wanted to scream “Noooooo!” to Linda but I held back. I caught Femi staring at me. “You don’t like my brother?” “Not that, I’m just tired. Sorry.” “You can go back to the hotel if you want.” “Thank you. Goodnight.” “I’ll take you to your room to make sure you are fine. Who knows the kind of people that are in this party?” I laughed sarcastically. If only you knew. I looked around for Daniel but didn’t see any sign of him. We got to my door and I looked at Mr. Oga to say goodnight. “I’ll tuck you in.” He said with a straight face. I laughed. We entered and I shut the door. “I’m actually just looking for an excuse to get away from the party. I’ve had enough of socialites and celebs for one day.” He collapsed on my bed. “You’ll break it.” I said, grinning. “Do I weigh that much?” “I don’t know.” “Okay, let’s find out.” He pulled me and I fell on the bed. We both started to laugh. “Ok so I’m about to put my weight on you.” “Nooooo!” I attempted to get up. “I’m kidding; I wouldn’t wanna crush those cute bones of yours.” The silence that followed afterwards was soothing. It was the best time of tonight. I had a plan in my head. It was not fine tuned yet but I had a plan. I laid my head on his stretched arms. He didn’t say anything. I closed my eyes for a while. I opened my eyes and saw that his eyes were close. I got up slowly so I would not wake him. I backed the bed and started to unzip my dress. I reached for my robe that was laid on the chair at the same time. “I’m not sleeping you know.” I jumped. He laughed at me. I started to zip back my dress. I was too embarrassed to look at him. I heard his footsteps as he approached me. As he held me from behind, I started to melt. He kissed my neck and trailed his lips slowly to my back. “I shouldn’t be doing this.” He said as he ran his tongue on my earlobe. “You shouldn’t,” I managed to whisper. “Tell me to stop.” He said as he made me turn to look at him. His eyes were filled with passion. They were sexily dilated. If I let him go, this may never happen again. My entire plan will be messed up. I was not done drawing the plan, but I had laid the foundation. This was the only way to get Willie-Willie to admit to what he did. I wanted justice. If this is the price to pay, then so be it. I had to be sure of what I really felt. I loved Femi very much, but bringing Willie-Willie to ashes was more important to me. I felt a rush of guilt as the thought of Daniel rushed into my head. I ignored it and made my decision. Revenge and love: can they be managed separately? Maybe! “I can’t…”I said weakly. He put his lips on mine. Nothing has ever felt this good before. Not even coldstone could taste or make me feel this good. I bit on his lower lips and he moaned. We moved slowly towards the bed with our lips locked. He gently placed me on the bed and began to stare at me. “One question……?” He said. “Go ahead.” “Daniel…I saw you two leave together…things are complicated as it is already. I wouldn’t wanna…” He paused to suckle on my lower lips. I was in heaven. I moaned shamefully. When he stopped I managed to answer, “He’s just a friend…a close friend.” “Good.” “Can I kiss you?” He asked. I started to laugh. “After how many kisses…?” He laughed and continued. “Oh! You have a dimple!” He kissed my cheek. “So how did you find out about your mother — step mother rather?” His face had turned serious again. His brow formed a perfect arch each time he wore a serious look. “You are frowning, you know?” I said. “No I’m not.” he grinned. I told him how I found out and my fears of my father’s will. He advised me and said I should seek counsel from my father’s family to find out the truth. That would mean a trip to Akure to see my father’s sister. “I can come with you if you want.” I looked away shyly. “Was it you?” I asked. I needed him to admit it was him at the club. He smiled. ‘I gave the shoe to my mallam.” I started to laugh. “Did you know it was me when you interviewed me?” “Yes — before you start thinking you got the job because of this reason, you got it because you are a smart lady.” “Thank you.” “A smart lady I really really like. I know this is complicated and we should talk about it before we make a mistake. I want you, not because I wanna get laid or something but I wanna get to know you.” I smiled. “So, I’m going to go now and we’ll talk in the morning.” He got up to leave. “Wait!” I rushed to meet him. “What about Miss Agedo?” “She’s just a friend. Goodnight, Shalewa.” He pecked me on the cheek. “Goodnight, Mr. Williams.” “Huh?” “…Femi” I corrected myself. “Say it again.” He whispered. “Femi….” Our eyes locked for some seconds before he walked away. I went back into the room and brought out my diary. It was time to draw out the right plan to get my revenge. ‘I will hunt you down Gbolahan Williams. Scouts honour. ’ Omoshalewa Benson: Tales of a Lagos babe is written by oyelakin babatunde solid AKA TEESOLID [@IamTEESOLID]

Episode 17 [willie willie nd oda stories] It had been 6 months and I have still not been able to bring Willie Willie down. Femi has been a sweetheart. Our trip to Akure was awesome. We lodged in a hotel called Owena. The rooms were made in chalets and looked really nice. We had talked, about our lives, growing up and our siblings. My interest in asking about his brother began to bother him after I asked “is your brother gay?” He didn’t look shocked and he didn’t answer my question. Instead, he kissed me and called it a night. He didn’t try to make love to me, he held me and we both slept off. The next day, we proceeded to my Aunt’s house. “Omoshalewa Aduke Ade, to what do I owe this honour?” Aunty Nike shouted as I went down on both knees. She had sent her driver to pick us up from the hotel. I knelt down to greet her “Dide dide, get up” she pulled me for a hug “Aunty, it’s good to see you again” She finally let go of me and turned to face Femi. “Ha! You have brought your husband to be to me” I giggled. Now this is a difficult situation, who do I tell her he is? He hasn’t officially asked me out, he is my boss, he …. “E ka san ma” Femi prostrated. I was shocked…Femi Williams, graduate of Oxford University, Masters from Cambridge, extra education from London Business School….. “How are you my son? Please get up” We walked to the sitting room and took our seats. “Aunty, this is Femi, he is my…” “I’m her boyfriend Ma” he cut me short. My Aunt gave us a suspicious look. I smiled sheepishly. “Yes, he is my boyfriend” I said quickly. “Ok o, Femi what do you do” “I work with a Company called Mable Consult” What! See this man o, you work, abi you are a shareholder…see modesty o “Ha! I know that company, my friend’s Husband was a shareholder, think he passed it on to his first son, Chief Williams, may his soul rest in peace” I cleared my throat, oh my God…small world, I was about to tell my Aunt, Femi was Chief Williams son when Femi beat me to it. “Yes ma, you are right, that’s the company I work with” “That’s good, wait, isn’t that where you work Shalewa?” “Yes ma” “Ha, office romance, interesting…Adijat, can you bring the pineapple juice now, please” My aunt called out to her maid like a queen. I smiled “Aunty, I’m here to see you concerning my mother” “What is it, is she alright? What happened to her?” My Aunt rushed to my side. “I mean my real mother” She froze “Shalewa…I don’t get you, what are you on about?” I smiled. I could see through her. “Aunty, I know Iya Shalewa; my supposed Mother is not my real mother” I kept a straight face “…and this is how I found out” I narrated my findings to her. Aunty burst into tears and I had to console her. “Your mother died giving birth to you, the woman you know as your mother was your nanny, your father ended up marrying her…that painting you see hanging in your father’s library is a picture of your mother” “Hmm! That explains why she took that painting down after daddy died, bur how come no one ever told me?” I started to cry. Femi took my palm and squeezed it. “Aunty, do you know why the will has not been read?” By the time we left Akure, I was able to gather enough to decide on what to do. My Aunt would support me on this and that was all I needed. Femi had offered to hire a lawyer for me if I need one. I politely turned him down, who needs another lawyer when I have Omoyeni? I gave him a funny look as we went into the car. “Boyfriend??” He laughed “well, am I not?” Daniel has really been distant. We tried to talk after my revelation but he kept pulling away. He made me feel dirty, raped and worthless with his attitude. I didn’t know if it was the rape part that turned him off. If he couldn’t handle this, I guess he didn’t even stand a chance. I decided to confront him. I went to his office and found him working on his computer. He looked up “Hi Shalewa” no smile, is that it? “Daniel, are you ok?” He stopped typing and looked at me “what do you mean?” “You’ve been avoiding me, ever since the Ghana event…you haven’t…” “I’ve been busy” he cut in “Yeah! Busy avoiding me” “Shalewa that is not true…ehm, am in the middle of something, can we talk later?” He got up and practically pushed me to the door. “You know what, forget about it” “Shalewa…” He called out. I stormed out of his office and didn’t even look back. Idiot! I got into the office and Linda told me Femi needed me urgently in his office. Now, this is the difficult part; we sometimes flirt at work, nothing more, because if news ever went out….sighs! “You asked to see me Sir” I said closing the door behind me. “Please sit” he smiled and turned his laptop. “The opinion poll for the festival is shooting up; guess who wants to be on the panel of judges?” “Who?” I grinned “Tyler Perry” “Oh my God, you did it” I got up to hug him. He had been trying to bring him in for a while; Tyler had declined more than once with the excuse of having so much on his table. “No, we did it” he held on to me tight and kissed my forehead. He was about to kiss me when the door opened. We disentangled immediately. It was Miss Agedo. “What’s going on here?” She said “Ehm ehm” I stammered “Oh shut up you tramp, you think I don’t know you’ve been sleeping with my boyfriend” I opened my mouth…sleeping…now, that’s too much. “Girls like you around looking for rich men to help make their lives easy….” “Oh, you hold it there Miss Agedo, you’re mistaken” “Oh, shut up” Linda rushed in to see the film show. I looked at Femi with tears threatening to pour down my eyes.. “Laurencia, we were just celebrating over getting Tyler on board” “With a hug? With your subordinate? Does that even make sense?” “Yes, it’s called a sudden rush of happy emotions…some of us are too rigid to know what that is” Femi replied Wow! That shut her up. She stormed out of the office. He apologised and left me with Linda who was salivating for gist. “So I hugged Oga because I was so excited, na so she come in o…don’t know what she was thinking” I lied Linda bought it. Phew! Femi had asked me to come home with him tonight to celebrate. His brother would also be there to celebrate the good news. I couldn’t resist getting closer to bringing Willie Willie down, so I agreed. Does anyone know how to cast the truth spell? Because I could use one now. So Gbolahan, I heard you lived in the UK for a while?” “Yes I did” he smiled Femi looked at me and winked. Oh you have no idea handsome… We were seated in Femi’s sitting room. His cook had prepared special delicacies for us to celebrate. I was seated across Willie Willie. ” So where did you live during your stay in the UK?” “Hmm!” He swallowed his food “kent, oxford, London, Manchester…everywhere”…he lifted his cup to drink. “Have you ever been to Lincoln? I added He smiled and took a drink “As a matter of fact, I did live in Lincoln and I had mad fun, have you ever been to Lincoln?” he smiled and winked at me. He was playing a game and he just got himself a matching partner

Episode 18 [guilty or not] The knock on the door was very annoying. Where was everyone? Ever since the will was read, it’s been a mess. The bang on the door continued. I got there just in time to see Taiwo open the door. “Are you Shalewa Benson?” “Not, she’s my sister” Taiwo answered the men at the door. “I’m Shalewa” I answered “Miss Shalewa Benson, you are wanted for questioning in our station for the murder of Mr. Gbolahan Williams” Taiwo looked at me and shouted “mummy” she ran to get Iya Shalewa. I couldn’t even think right. What? How?. “Can I at least change into something decent?” I looked at myself in my bumshort and hello kitty tank top “No” the men grabbed me “Hold on a second…Taiwo” I tried to get away from them. They dragged me out of the compound into a black Volvo and screamed out to Taiwo who had run out; I could see Iya Shalewa running out too. “You can come to falomo station if you want to see your sister” They zoomed off. Oh my God! “Where were you on Friday night at about 11.00pm?” The inspector standing in front of me asked. There was me, a round table, a lady inspector and this tall inspector. The only light was the one that shone down my head. Here I was, in a cell for the murder of Gbolahan Williams, A.K.A Willie Willie. “I was in my house; I came in at about that time and went straight to bed” “Who was with you, who can attest to your whereabout?” “My mother and sisters” I swallowed. With the tug of war about the will, would this people I mentioned protect me? This is what happened with the will; Barrister Tochukwu had come to the house accompanied by my Aunt Nike after close of work. She had gone to him and demanded that the will be read. His reason for delay could not be explained, it was my father’s wish to see that a part of the will be concealed until a certain time. He showed us a letter to prove this. Apparently, it involved some other people and his interest was being protected by some assigned professionals with a drawn contract under the supervision of Barrister Tochukwu. My father had left me our house in Ikoyi, the one we all lived in. He had a flat in 1004 and he left that to the twins. He had died with some millions of naira left in his account; he shared it amongst the twins and me, 50 percent for me and 50 for the twins. He also shared his shares the same way amongst us. He asked Aunty Nike and me to oversee the outcome of the un-read will when it was ready. He left Iya Shalewa a letter. She didn’t open it. The house in Magodo went to me with a letter to accompany it. He had 4 no. of flats in Ikeja, one flat was for me, one for Iya Shalewa, the two for the twins. It was a wrap after this, the twins were speechless. Kehinde started to shout “how can he leave most of this things to Shalewa, mummy, this is so unfair, daddy left you only a flat and a letter? He should have left it all to her na, after she killed him…this is so unfair…I always knew you were his favourite” she stood up “thank God mummy didn’t pick you as her favourite, maybe you would have killed her too” I laughed at her childishness and got up to leave “well, it’s hard for a woman who isn’t really a child’s mother to pick another woman’s child over her own” “Ha, Shalewa” aunty Nike shouted. I saw Iya Shalewa open her mouth. The twins looked at each other in complete confusion. With this,I excused myself and went to get ready for Femi’s soiree. Iyalaya wan mehn! xxxx They let me go. They checked my alibi with my family and they attested to it. I picked up my phone and called Femi. “Baby, where are you?” I asked He was all messed up. He couldn’t talk. His mum was on her way from the states. I felt a pang of guilt…if only…if I had not… I started to cry. “Tell me where you are Femi, I need to talk to you, I need to see you”. “Not now Shalewa, I can’t” And with this, he hung up. Omoyeni’s call came in immediately he hung up. “Shalewa, what is going on, Taiwo called me” I confessed everything to Omoyeni. “Don’t repeat anything you said to me to anyone, I’ll see you in a bit” Taiwo had come to pick me. We drove home in silence. I arrived to see Iya Shalewa waiting at the door. Aunty Nike had called 100 times. I’m not exaggerating. She had returned to Akure. I wish I had not…I couldn’t stop myself from crying. “Shalewa” iya shalewa called out. I wept like a child. “I’m sorry” she said “I tried to be the best mother, I tried not to let you notice, until your father died, I blamed you for it…” She started to cry. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind so I couldn’t listen to her, was this a ploy to get everything dad left me? I walked away into my room and started to try Femi again. I picked up my car keys and drove to his house. Miss Agedo’s car was parked outside. I stood by the gate and rang the bell, his gateman told me he didn’t want to see anyone. “But you let her in” I said pointing to Miss Agedo’s car. He closed the gate and left me staring at the high walls. I went back into my car and waited for a while. I saw Femi come out holding Miss Agedo’s hand. The tall inspector was with them. I bent down and waited for them to disappear. I started to panic. Should I run? I went back home to pack some things. The twins and Iya Shalewa sat quietly as if someone had died. “What is it?” I asked “I looked back to see the inspector and 2 policemen sitting on the dining table. “Shalewa Benson, you are under arrest for the murder of Gbolahan Williams, anything you say will be used against you in the court”. Episode 19 [complicated] It was Miss Agedo. She told the police she heard me tell Daniel that I was raped by Gbolahan Williams while in Ghana. i remember now, the footsteps we heard while i was pouring out my heart to Daniel…….. She also told them she saw us argue the night he died. I was sitting on a chair. Two mean policemen and one inspector were with me. A light bulb shone down on my face. Miss Agedo had come to Femi’s place uninvited. “Oh, I see I wasn’t invited to this soiree; hello Femi.” She walked up to Femi who got up to ‘air kiss’ her. “I’ll ask the cook to fix you something Laurencia.” “Oh thanks, I already had dinner. Wine would be good though.” So he got her wine. Gbolahan excused himself. I was pissed. This silly woman just wanted to ruin my day. Femi asked her why she came. She came up with a silly excuse: work; so they started to look at a silly contract together. I got even more pissed and decided to take my leave. “I’ll walk you out Shalewa.” Femi excused himself from the impromptu meeting. He pulled me into the kitchen. “I’m sorry Shalewa.” “It’s alright.” We hugged. “I’ve missed this…” He put his lips on mine. I shivered and kissed him back hungrily. We stopped and giggled like teenagers. He ran his lips on mine again and this time it was deep. I moaned and allowed him push me to the wall. We were so carried away that we didn’t hear the footsteps, but the sound of someone coughing made us disentangle with the speed of light. “Sorry guys,” Willie-Willie said, “Please feel free to continue.” He gave an evil grin and walked away. Femi walked me to the gate. We hugged and I walked to my car, he wanted to see me drive away but I urged him to go back inside so Miss. Agedo would not be suspicious. As soon as he went in, I stepped out of my car and walked towards Willie-Willie who was taking a drag outside. “If it isn’t Lincoln’s dinner,” he puffed into my face. I was filled with rage as I heard him admit he remembered me. I slapped him. “You bastard!” I screamed. He started to laugh. I raised my hand to give him another slap, he caught me by the wrist and held me so tight. “I see you are bitching around with my brother. I will tell him I know you. I will tell him all sorts of disgusting tales that he would throw you away like a rag.” I laughed, “Make sure you include the rape, you son-of-a-bitch. I will get you arrested. I will make you pay for what you and your friend did to me. I will make you pay for my father’s death. I will make your life so miserable…” “Oh shut up! It’s my word against yours. Who do you think he will believe? Let’s see, I’ll start by telling him how we met in a party and how you came in with some girls to sell your body. How you tried to force yourself on me and I kept telling you I was gay. You moved to someone else and sold your body. I will tell him all…” “I’ll kill you Gbolahan Williams, I swear I will …” I moved close enough to spit in his face, I swallowed my saliva as I saw Miss Agedo come out. My heart skipped a beat. She smiled at us and went into her car. She walked back into the house with a mischievous smile on her face. I would have sworn i saw her wink at me. I walked back to my car. Thank God Femi didn’t see me. I drove back home and met the twins in the sitting room. I ignored them and went straight to my room. I kept turning from side to side on my bed. I called Femi to let him know I was home. We talked for a minute and we said goodnight. I tossed around on the bed for a while and thought about Willie-Willie’s threat. I don’t want to lose Femi. If he had apologised, I may have forgiven him. His threats…they scared me…so I started to draw out a plan. I finally dozed off. It was daybreak by the time I opened my eyes. I looked at the inspector. “That is my story. I didn’t kill him; I didn’t kill him,” I started to cry. “Oga, leave us make we torture am, if we touch am spoil, she go confess”, one of the policemen said. “I didn’t kill him, I…” “Shut up! You killed him because he raped you; because he was going to jeopardize your relationship with his brother. He was going to take away your chance of being married to one of the richest men in Lagos…” “I didn’t kill him!” I screamed. The policeman that had talked about torturing me slapped me. I kept screaming and he kept hitting me. “I have my own money, I don’t need his money! I am not a gold-digger! Gbolahan hurt me in the past… I didn’t…” I paused as he landed a punch on my lips. “I didn’t kill him!” I swallowed the blood that was on my lips. “Stop!” the Inspector shouted. “Take her back to the cell.” xxx “I’m so scared to take up this case. Are you sure you want me to do this?” Omoyeni asked me. This was after she had screamed at the policemen for how they treated me. “I do, you are the only one that believes me anyway.” They had allowed me receive only one visitor, my lawyer. “I will do all I can to get you out of here. My dad has organised his best counsels for this case, with me in charge.” She said the last part without confidence. I refused to be shaken. If she loses the case then I’ll be facing either life imprisonment or a death sentence. “Listen, I believe in you, you can do this…” I encouraged her. “Tell me everything.” I repeated my story and watched her record it. Meanwhile, the news was all over the papers. She told me Mama Shalewa and Aunty Nike had come to the station together with the twins. They had tried all they could. Aunty Nike had questioned Omoyeni’s competence and wanted to get another lawyer. Omoyeni told her politely I already made my decision. I told her about the will and told her to help Aunty Nike secure my share. “If anything happens to me, I will let you know what to do with my money.” “Nothing bad is going to happen Shalewa, I promise.” “Madam, time don over, come dey go,” the policeman that brought Omoyeni in said. She left and I was pushed back into the cell. xxx Femi’s mother was in the station. The DPO sent for me because she requested to see me. I was pushed into his office. Femi looked at me as I entered. I couldn’t read his thoughts. “Is this the criminal that killed my son?” Mrs. Williams asked. “I didn’t kill your son!” I shouted. “Shut up!” the DPO said. I looked at Femi. He didn’t look like the man I fell in love with. He looked like a stranger. Tears ran down my eyes. “Take her back into the cell.” The DPO said. I looked back at Femi and our eyes met. He looked away. God, please vindicate me.

If u had told Femi earlier about ur past with the rape, Femi would have stood by u now. AA lot of things going wrong because of that decision u took all by urself. But what is Femi's relationship with Miss Agbeno? Are they dating? Or what? Some pieces of this puzzles are missing

Episode 20 [in court 1] “Case adjourned to the 7th of November” the Judge announced “All rise, court…”The Court secretary shouted. It was so irritating, why do they always do that part? COURT!!! I still managed to feel irritated even though today didn’t go well. The court hearing had started with the prosecuting council calling the witness to the stand. It was Miss Agedo. This was after I pleaded ‘not guilty’. The state prosecutor looked scary and talked so fast and aggressive; it was as though Miss Agedo had been well prepared for everything she said. She told the court she overheard me telling Daniel about how I was raped by Gbolahan Williams and how I was going to deal with him. She also said she witnessed the deceased and I arguing and that I promised to kill him. She said maybe I was going to do that before she stepped out, but when I saw her, I froze. The prosecuting counsel kept repeating” so you heard her say she was going to kill the deceased?” She screamed yes over 5 times. He continued “what was the deceased reply?” “He told her he would tell his brother what she was up to, she really went mad when she heard that” “Why was she mad?” The prosecuting council moved closer to Miss Agedo. “Because she had been trying to seduce the deceased brother” “Oh!” The prosecutor exclaimed. Shio! As if they had not rehearsed it. I looked around the court and saw Daniel, he looked so unkempt and was staring at nothing. I looked at Lydia who was sitting beside him, she had dressed up to come to the court. Silly girl. In the midst of all this, I still managed to keep my sanity, I tried not to show how I really felt inside, especially because I needed to stay strong for Omoyeni. Aunty Nike has said I was intentionally putting my life on the death row by choosing Omoyeni to represent me. My attention drifted back to Miss Agedo. The prosecutor has finished his examination. Omoyeni was called upon for a cross examination. “Miss Agedo, what is your relationship with the deceased brother?” Omoyeni asked Miss Agedo started to stammer “he is my …he is …” “You are in love with him ain’t you? And he doesn’t want you, does he?” Omoyeni cut in “And you are aware the Accused and the brother of the deceased share something, a relationship perhaps?” Omoyeni added looking at everyone. “Objection my Lord” the Prosecutor shouted “Objection overruled” The Judge answered back “But My Lord, Barrister Omoyeni is putting answers into the mouth of my witness and..” “Barrister Emmanuel, what part of objection overruled don’t you understand?” The Judge shouted. “Please go on Barrister Omoyeni” the Judge said “That will be all my Lord” Omoyeni went back to take her seat. Miss Agedo did the same. Her face had changed. The prosecutor went ahead to call Femi to the stand. After the oath, he began to ask Femi questions starting with if the deceased was homosexual? was he ever seen with a girl that he introduced as his girlfriend? Did he ever show interest in women? Femi answered yes to the homosexuality question and no to the rest. I swallowed my saliva and blinked uncontrollably. For the first time since the hearing began, my heart actually skipped. The prosecutor moved on “who is the accused to you?” “She’s my Assistant at work” “Do you have any personal relationship with her?” “Not really” he answered quietly. The Prosecutor squeezed his face. “Mr. Williams, can you give a straight answer?” Femi cleared his throat “yes” “What sort of relationship?” “Friendship” he replied quickly. My heart sank. He went on to ask him why I was in their house on the day Willie Willie was murdered. He replied that it was to celebrate a contract. He concluded and Omoyeni was invited for a cross examination. “What sort of friendship do you share with the accused?” Omoyeni asked “Objection My Lord the question is provocative” the prosecutor shouted “Objection sustained” the Judge said ”Counsel rephrase your question” the Judge said to Omoyeni. Omoyeni cleared her throat “have you and the Accused ever gone beyond platonic friendship, have you ever shared an intimate moment?” “Objection my Lord” the Prosecutor shouted again “Objection overruled, please carry on Counsel” The Judge said “Not really” Femi answered “Mr. Williams, can you kindly answer a yes or no” “Yes” he said quietly. “That will be all your Lordship, at least the Court can establish that Miss Agedo may have a reason to make up stories to incriminate my client, I rest my case” The case was adjourned.

Episode 21 [the truth is out] I was in another world. I saw myself walking to Angel Islington on my way to my University. I stopped to buy twix chocolate at a Pakistani store. I paid and walked out of the store. I hummed to Avril Lavaigne’s version of ‘knocking on heaven’s door’. I adjusted my coat and placed my hand in my coat. It was freezing cold. I cross the road to connect St John’s Street. That was when it happened, I saw the prosecutor coming after me with an axe. All of a sudden, it went dark and hot. I ran and peeled off my coat. I looked back to see the gap between the prosecutor and I. It wasn’t only him, Femi and his mum had joined me too, then the judge… I heard echoes, I kept running. I blinked and found myself in a dark room. They were all there, charging towards me. “Murderer” they all said. They sounded like zombies that had blood dripping out of their mouth. They had fangs like vampires. I screamed. I felt somebody hold me. It felt warm. I was too scared to open my eyes. I heard the voice and my eyes opened on its own accord. “Hey Princess” I smiled “hello daddy” “Don’t be scared, they are all gone” “Can I really see you daddy?” “Hmm! Well, in your subconscious” “I didn’t kill him daddy; I know I blamed him for your death. I know he robbed me of my innocence, I know he put my life on hold for a while but I didn’t kill him” “I know Princess. Sometimes in life, we find ourselves in situation that makes us feel like it is over…” He smiled and started to pace “but usually it’s only just the beginning. I have watched you struggle to find yourself again, I am proud of you Mon amour. It gets worse so you can experience what it means to be better. Problems, challenges…they are all part of what makes us stronger”. He stretched out his hands to me. I took his hand and paced around with him. “Will I be found guilty daddy?” He smiled “and what sort of father would I be if I can’t watch over my darling daughter?” My father started to fade away… “Daddy, don’t go…answer me, answer me…don’t go” I cried out. “Shalewa, Shalewa…na which kind dream you dey dream?” a cellmate said shaking me to wake up. I woke up with tears in my eyes. A policewoman was at the cell gate. “You get visitor, your lawyer dey wait for DPO office” I looked at everyone and wondered how long I had been dreaming. I rubbed my eyes and followed the policewoman. “Hello Shalewa” Omoyeni got up to hug me. She was smiling. I smiled back and murmured hello. The DPO looked at me and asked me to sit down. My eyes almost popped out of my socket. Prisoner, sit down? Even the policewoman made a sound. I sat, Omoyeni started to cry. Had the case gone worse I thought to myself then I started to laugh at, to think that I actually had more faith after that silly dream. I almost hissed. “They caught the killer” Omoyeni whispered I blinked twice “what did you say?” I got up and held her face. “They found the killer Shalewa, you are free” I had tears rushing down my eyes. I started to weep. It’s so funny how close it can be for one’s life to approach its end, all of a sudden, hope, faith and truth comes in and makes a way. I wept like a baby. Omoyeni got up and held me in her arms. “How?” I could feel saliva dripping down my lips. I didn’t care. A knock interrupted Omoyeni’s response. It was Femi. He said a general hello, only the DPO and the policewoman responded. His presence didn’t stop my tears of joy, or my mouth from running like a well of saliva. “Who?” I asked. “Daniel” “What!!!” I felt my body lose consciousness. Femi caught me as I fell. I hissed in disgust as I passed out. Omoshalewa Benson: Tales of a Lagos babe is written by

Is a murderer no matter what he did it for? He won't want to be killed.... That why he is in the tight corner............ Only if he did it for another reason...... @teesolid which kind examination be that one? A lot of people didn't even post with @teesolid..... Better update before I..........................

2 all dose of u who waited patiently 4 d finale, I respect ur calmness. Episode 22 [the finale] “My Lord, if it pleases the court, I can explain the trauma my patient has gone through” Dr. Oluwaseun said. He had just been introduced the court by the Defense Counsel for Daniel. Daniel had hardly been able to sit through the court session. He had one of those mischievous look on. I almost ask him once if he suffered from ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) The case had started with Daniel pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. The prosecuting counsel had recapped how Daniel was caught. Femi had found Daniel’s phone with their ‘aboki’ gateman who has taken the phone from the crime scene. He had scolded him and went into the house with the phone. He left the phone lying around for days, all this days while I was arrested, beaten and accused wrongly, Femi had the phone. Out of missing his brother, he charged the phone back to life and started going through the memoirs on the phone. He saw strange messages on the phone, it read “I can’t stand that you breathe while my sister is dead and six feet under the ground, you disgust me. People like you disgust me” Willie Willie had replied “who the hell are you? Who the fuck is your sister, pick up your call loser and let me talk some motherfucking sense into your watery cerebellum” The person replied “rapist…” “Now I know who you are, Shalewa…grow up and let’s talk. You know you liked what we did to you that night. You liked that we introduced you to the world of pleasure. I can still remember how you moaned like a dog.” Willie Willie replied. “This isn’t Shalewa. You really are daft you know. Let me tell you a little story, a certain person raped my sister…actually it was a gang rape in Detroit. I found my only sister almost dead. She was just 9 years old. I saved her life. My mother was in pain, pain over how her daughter’s innocence was snatched. We didn’t find the rapist especially because my mum dropped the case. She didn’t want the embarrassment. 1 year later, my 10 years old sister committed suicide. She couldn’t live in her skin, she said she felt unclean. I was 10years old too. She was my twin and my only friend. I tried to kill myself too but was taking away….” “What has this got to do with me psycho? Pick your damn call” Willie Willie answered back. “Well, you will find out plus I stopped taking my drugs, I need to be focused to do this” “Do what?” Willie Willie asked That was the last trend of the message. Femi had rushed to the police station. The police had gone through his phone records. On the night he was shot, he had received a call from that same number. The‘aboki’ had been arrested. They had thought he was a part of it. He told them he found the phone behind the flowers while he was gardening. They held him custody. They started to trace the line and found that it was registered to a Moses Momoh. They went to that address and it didn’t exist. They were blocked. They looked for clues here and there until a junior detective suggested going to the service provider. The forensic department had given a time of death; from the assumed time of death given, the phone call would have lasted just around the time he got shot; so they tortured the gateman a little more, hoping he would come around and confess that he was part of it. He didn’t. The detective with the help of the commissioner got a warrant from the court to approach the service provider and listen to Willie Willie’s last call. “Who is this?” Willie Willie’s voice came up. “Your worst nightmare” the caller said Willie Willie started to laugh “do you think that I am scared of you?” “Then come outside your gate and prove you are not” “I am coming” a door creak sounded and then the sound made by the gate and…. “Where the fuck are you prankster?” “Behind you” Willie Willie obviously turned and sounded surprised. “Daniel, you are fucked up men, look at you holding a gun at me…fucking drop the gun” The next thing that was heard was the sound of a bullet and a big thud. The conversation went quiet until… “Oh God, what have I done, what have I done?” Footsteps were heard and a car’s noise followed. The conversation went dead afterwards. The police charged to Daniel’s house. They found the gun and arrested him. He didn’t fight back; instead he had said “GUILTY”. All this were the evidence presented to the court. The Defense Counsel had gone around the case as a psychological issue. He pointed out the text message where Daniel had stopped using his drugs. I was called to the stand as a witness. I told the court how I had told the Daniel about the deceased and how I noticed a change in Daniel afterwards. The Defense Counsel kept trying to put words in my mouth that I noticed Daniel was loony. The prosecuting counsel had objected a few times. I told the court again, I noticed a change in him around that period. A cross examination was done by the prosecuting counsel who was trying to make it look like I forced ideas into Daniel’s head and made him kill Willie Willie. I was asked to step down. Omoyeni who was seating close to me said ” Shalewa, ‘am not letting you take the witness stand again, it’s too risky. You could be accused of forcing ideas into the mind of a man who appears to suffer from psychological issues”. The Defense Counsel had called Dr. Oluwaseun to the stand. Dr. Oluwaseun was around the age of fifty, a well respected psychiatrist. He said he had been the Doctor of the accused for years; since he returned back to Nigeria. ” Daniel…” Dr. Oluwaseun paused and looked at the court. He looked like a man full of drama. I found myself smiling amidst this chaos. He continued “the accused suffers from schizophrenia, a mental disorder that is characterized by periods of psychosis; that is delusions and hallucinations. An individual can be fixed on one thing, odd thoughts patterns, extreme mood change, mini psychotic episodes that can last for few minutes. My patient, the accused…he had stopped using his drugs…I believe his actions was greatly induced by this, he suffered a great loss when he lost his twin, seeing another lady in distress could also have led to his mental relapse. I actually felt we were making headway, but I believe I was wrong. My patient is still greatly disturbed” The doctor was cross examined by the prosecutor. “He stopped using his drugs, isn’t that a conscious effort based on sane decision?” The Prosecuting Counsel asked “It was most likely induced by a little delusion which would have triggered a psychotic breakdown and then make him more delusional to stop using his drugs…in his head he felt being delusional was the right state of mind” Dr. Oluwaseun said “Right state of mind to kill a man?” The Prosecuting Counsel asked “Objection my Lord” the Defense Counsel shouted “Objection overruled” the Judge answered “please carry on” “What the drug does is to actually improve the functioning of the patient; it doesn’t mean it cures them out rightly. Long term support is required” “From your case note, he has been getting that from you?” “Yes, like I said earlier, I thought he was improving. He recently experienced an emotion close to what he felt for his sister for the lady called Shalewa…seeing her hurt reversed all that we worked on…it increased his non compliance. You can see that in my note” “Doctor, if the court appoints another psychiatrist to examine Mr. Daniel odulaja, the accused, will they come to this same conclusion?” “I am a man of integrity; the court can do as they please. My patient suffers from schizophrenia and any sound Doctor will see that in few hours” With this, the prosecuting counsel let the Doctor go. The Judge agreed to a state psychiatrist to examine Daniel. The case was adjourned to noon. Hours later, the State Doctor confirmed Daniel had the symptoms of a mixture of negative and positive schizophrenia. With this, both counsels made their closing remarks. Tears ran down my eyes as I began to feel guilty for what I had put Daniel through. It was my fault that he was in this situation. If anything happened to him I wouldn’t forgive myself. As if Omotunde could read my mind, she turned to look at me. She had been quiet through the court proceeds and constantly rubbed on her baby bulge. “Shalewa, don’t feel responsible for this. Daniel is mentally ill. It’s not your fault” she said “Yes, it isn’t your fault” Omoyeni added. I held on to Omoyeni and Omotunde as the Judge declared verdict. “After due investigation, it has been proven that the accused is guilty by reason of insanity. Sadly, people with mental illness do not respond well in prison and a mentally derailed man is incompetent to proceed to trial, in this case, You Daniel odulaja; this court hereby confines you to a mental institution with maximum monitoring until you are certified sane enough to live in this environment. The Judge announced. “All rise” the Court Secretary shouted as the Judge made her exit. I wept like a baby. Daniel’s mother ran to her son and held him. Femi stared in oblivion. He held his Mother’s hand and left the court. My family rushed to my side and hugged me. I looked at Daniel as the police escorted him. He winked at me and I heard him say “I’m free” The End.
