[b]Crime rate in the university was at its peak, seemingly out of hand, obviously beyond control of the school authority.
Security officials were in their wits trying to restore the peace and hormony the instituition once enjoyed. However cultism and confraternities had eaten deep in the fabric of students; amazingly both males and females. Could crime actually wear off the efforts of security personnels?
Of course it would when police operate on the speed of law while criminal fly in the speed of light.
Cletus wore a black jacket over a versace singlet. Adorned with a red barrette his outfit reeked trouble. Faint hearted students would definitely pave way when he passes. However it wasn't time for bragging or flaunting. He walked briskly out of the room shoting the door behind him.
Cletus' heart wrestled against his rib cage as he strode to an abandoned hall. The hall was an island surrounded with grasses. He boot kicked its wooden door the door opened noisily. The hall was void and empty, its only occupants were seven human figures and a large central desk.
Joe, a leader of ' supreme viking confraternity' sat on the desk, in the middle of the hall. A lady sat fear-striken on his lap. A knife perched gently on her neck, a little move, a little 'misbehaviour' would cost her her throat.
Cletus swallowed hard upon seeing her. His footsteps dropped to a fearful limp.
Joe grinned.
"let go of her" Cletus demanded softly. Joe and his boys exchanged glances.
"no one crosses my path and goes scott free" he replied
cletus took two steps further. "please free her. Its me you have problems with" he found himself pleading.
"wrong answer" Joe replied.
"i...i...... I swear i'd do whatever you want, just free her"
Joe shoke his head in the negative. He freed his grip on Angela then pushed her forward. She staggered to his force.
A smile of warmth graced cletus lips. He opened his arms wide for her to run into. Her pace was slow he can't wait to have her in his hand. He also walked towards her. The distance between them closed gradually. All of a sudden she yelled loudly raw pain steamed from her voice. She fell face down.
"no oooo" Cletus' lips parted company. Joe had threw the knife at her, it didn't miss its target it drilled Angela's back, he thin-fabric dressed didn't hesitate to pave way.
Joe signalled his boys, they evacuated the hall. Cletus knelt on the floor beside Angela hot tears smeared his dark cheeks.
He turned her to lay on her left hand, using his own hand to support her body.
Angela stretched her weakening hand to his face, her fingers shoke as she caressed his cheek.
"i....i....love...Cletus" she stammered.
He sniffed his running nose.
"i love you too Angela" he held her up for a hug, certainly his last hug.
"prom...promise me you would change for good" her words came in whispers. Tears flooded her eyes, fountain of blood oozed out soaking her tank top and becking the cemented floor.
Cletus was silent. "promise me" she pushdd on.
"i give you my words honey" he replied.
Angela smiled in pain.
She lifted her hand from his cheek.
Seeing the engagement ring he gave her a week ago made him wail the more. Angela followed the trails of his eyes, she stared intently at the ring. Her eyes ejected streams of tears. She groaned loudly.
"let this ring conceal your promise. I'd always love you, even in thd after...." her last word skipped off. Her head fell heavily on Cletus' hand.
"angela! Angela! Please don't do this" he cried, shaking her vehemently.
He felt an artery on her neck. She was gone!!!
He held her up his chest crying on her neck. His fingers were drenched in the red liquid flowing from her back.
Memories of the sweet days visited his heavy heart.
Cletus was a 200 level student of software engeneering. He met beautiful and intelligent angela in school. She was in the same department as he.
They'd dated for weeks in the interim, trouble shooted its ugly head. Joe sent his boys to beat him up a couple of times. It was Segun's idea that cletus join 'the red barrette' for protection.
Segun was cletus' roomate.
He'd joined the confraternity happily, he loved Angela he didn't mind swimming in hell for her.
Recently, there was a clash between supreme vikings and the red barrette. Joe had kidnapped Angela to trap Cletus. The young man was still reminiscing when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He hesitated to turn. Two police men stood behind him, with one holding a handcuff. Cletus lost the will power to fight or complain. He had been hunted for days, worst still he was soaked in blood. He was handcuffed and led to a police van.
