EPISODE ONE Grgggh! Grrggggh! Grgggh! The alarm shrilled and Martins woke up with a start, his hand quickly going to the source of the noise. He turned it off, wondering why cheap phones had loud alarms while his eyes focused on the time: 5:30 am! As usual, there was no light but he put on the torch light of his phone, grateful for its multi-functionality as he flew off the bed in a hurry. If he didn’t want to be late for his first day at work, he had to get into the bathroom now or risk not having his bath. ‘He didn’t like the thought of that. Grabbing the pail, which sat under the wooden table and knocking the chair sideways in the process, he dragged his towel from off the door, flung it over his shoulder and ran out of the room. Martins lived in a compound where there was only one bathroom available for the ten rooms that faced each other in a row of fives and ideally should contain one person each. But, with a seventeen million housing deficit, there were squatters and squatters’ squatters. The rooms were overcrowded and the landlord didn’t care as long as his rent was paid and a certain level of decorum and responsibility was maintained. The fact that a tenant could contact a toilet disease since there were thirty-five users rather than ten was none of his business. He had complained several times for the need to have another bathroom to avoid the queue that usually occurred every morning but nothing had been done about it. Deji, his roommate had often told him to move out if he didn’t like it but they both knew he couldn’t afford the kind of place he wanted to live in. He however believed things would change soon. Getting a job in a company that specialized in real estate was a plus for him and would open him up to various possibilities. He believed this job could change things for him and make his life better unlike Deji who lived off his girlfriend and often crashed over at her place. He shook his head in wonder as he did every time he thought about his friend. He didn’t know how a man could just be happy doing nothing and just living off others. The thought of Deji and his weird ways however evaporated as he arrived at the bathroom and saw Iya Nkiru and Temisan already there. He didn’t know when he gave a loud hiss. Temisan cast him a glance, her expression, a mixture of annoyance, concern and curiosity “Wetin happen?” she asked. “Nothing! Mama Nkiru, na only you wan baff abi you wan baff your children as well?” “I go baff my children now. EPISODE TWO Martins glanced at his wristwatch. 8:45 a.m.! He was late! Alarm raced through him as he half-ran half-walked into the building that housed his new office. He couldn’t remember doing or saying anything exceptional. After going for numerous interviews and writing various tests, you get to the point where you just go through the motions, where you do it because you don’t want to be accused of inaction, where you do it because you don’t want to feel like a failure incapable of making your dreams a reality but all of that had changed the moment he got the call to resume. There was a new spring to his legs and he felt a light-headedness he had not felt in a long time. He wouldn’t call himself a religious man who believed in prophecies but he knew his life had changed forever. Although the pay wasn’t breathtaking, it would solve some of his problems and if he planned his life well, he might find himself living the way he had always dreamed. But before then, there was work to be done. He adjusted his tie, took a deep breath and opened the door to Realty Point Limited . He stopped short when he saw the reception empty. Today was not the day for the receptionist to be absent. He needed somebody to usher him to his department so he could settle in fast. He was late enough already and further delays wouldn’t help his case. He couldn’t afford to lose this job because of his tardiness. Of course, it wasn’t his fault considering his housing situation and the gigantic traffic he encountered on his way there but employers didn’t care about that. They were not interested in your personal problems, just your ability to deliver on the job assigned to you. He stood, debating whether to go in or wait for someone to come out when a smartly dressed lady with a lovely smile delivered him out of his dilemma. “Good morning. How may I help you?” “Errr…. Good morning. My name is Martins. I’m the new…” “Business and Marketing Executive,” she finished with a smile. “Ada already asked of you this morning. Second door to your left.” “Thank you,” Martins murmured as he moved, heaving a deep sigh. He didn’t know who Ada was but hoped she would be as friendly as the lady he just finished talking to. She wasn’t! The moment he walked in and introduced himself, she attacked him. “Why are you late?” she queried, unsmiling “There… there was traffic,” he stammered, intimidated by her stare. “There’s traffic everywhere, that’s why you leave home early.” Martins stared at her, incapable of giving a proper and adequate response. He had a feeling it would be pointless to explain he had been up as early as 5:30 a.m. and had done everything within his power to get there before 8:00 a.m. Her attitude gave credence to what he already knew: employers didn’t care about your problems, just get your job done. “I’m sorry,” he found himself saying. Of course he didn’t mean it but instinct told him it was better to show remorse to the small, slim looking woman with the oval face, big round eyes and full curvy lips than to justify his actions. And he trusted his instincts when it came to women. He had his own share of women, and with five sisters, he could safely trust his instinct. “Don’t be sorry, don’t come late again.” “Yes ma” “You are expected to be here before eight. By eight o’clock we do our morning confession and it’s compulsory” “Yes ma” he replied, wondering what ‘confession’ meant. “And don’t call me ma, my name is Ada,” she stated as she picked some papers from her table and stood up from her seat. ”We are all on first name basis.” “Including the MD?” For the life of him, he didn’t know why he had asked that. It seemed the question had just popped out of his mouth and the look she gave him told him he shouldn’t have asked. He was surprised when she replied. “No! To all of us, he is Mr Debo. We have a departmental meeting now.” Martins nodded as he watched her walk out of her office to the outer area where the other executives sat. The woman was a classic! His first day at work and she had succeeded in making him feel stupid. He wondered what the remaining days of the month would look like. He sure hoped it would be better. He settled for a nearby seat as he drew a huge breath of relief. The air-conditioned office gave him a soothing welcome to a new life – one which he hopes will be better than the hell he faces in his house with co-tenants. As the daydream continued to flow in his head, Martins began to tilt his head slightly towards his shoulder, eyes closing slowly till he fell asleep. ******story continues********

EPISODE THREE His first day at work wasn’t going the way he planned! Nothing about the day was. First, he’d had to deal with his troublesome neighbors and had ended up doing rub and shine just so he could make it to the office on time. Unfortunately, the early morning traffic characteristic of the Lagos metropolis had decided to frustrate his efforts. On getting to the office, his boss was a no-nonsense, get-the-work-done and don’t-give-me-excuses kind of woman who did not tolerate lateness and as if the universe had not dealt with him enough, he’d made the stupid mistake of dozing off just before the departmental meeting. He had woken up from his slumber by sharp consistent slaps to his thighs. He wondered how long he slept as he jerked awake and looked into the faces of his colleagues who were amused by him. The only person who wasn’t smiling or trying to control herself from laughing out loud was Ada. She stared at him with such stern and disapproving look, he felt like a school boy who was being reprimanded by his teacher and lowered his head in shame “Give me one reason why you should not be fired!” Ada demanded, even though she knew the question was rhetoric. Martins looked up sharply, fear in his eyes. “I’m sorry ma. I didn’t…. I just….” He trailed off, knowing there was no point in explaining himself. Whatever he said would be termed an excuse. Instead, he said, “I’m sorry,” an apologetic look on his face. “You can’t be sorry for coming late to work on your first day, and still be sorry for sleeping on duty. What more should I expect you to be sorry for today?” Ada was visibly irritated. “I am so moved to send you back to where you came from…” “Please don’t send me back” Martins retorted quickly, begging like a drowning man grabbing anything in sight. “I promise to be committed on the job and make you proud” After a while of a prolonged and uneasy silence, Ada finally spoke. “You will be given a chance to redeem yourself. You will have to visit a client’s office today and close this deal” Ada said, handing some papers and a file to him. “…and don’t sleep in a client’s office, it’s unprofessional.” “Yes ma!” He didn’t know she was going to send him to the field on his first day at work. Martins sighed as he looked around once again at the richly furnished reception, impressed. There were comfortable sofas that made you forget you were there on business, lovely artworks that lined the wall and gave the impression you were at a gallery exhibition, a glass table that held various magazines ranging from fashion to business and the beautifully carved receptionist desk that stood in a corner, unobtrusive. The place reeked of money and opulence and for the umpteenth time, he wondered why Ada had asked him to close this deal. His first day at work and he was handed a big shot client such as this. Martins stood affixed to a point, staring at her in surprise. “Any problem? You can’t handle it” she asked, her expression unreadable. For a woman, she knew how to keep her face devoid of emotion. The only thing that gave her away was the inflexion in her voice. “I’m just surprised, that’s all,” he responded, his tone slightly defensive. “Why? Is this not why you were employed? To sell our products?” “I know…” “Then what is the issue?” Nothing was the issue; he was just surprised he was going through all these on the first day. He expected he should be given time to acclimatize and get familiar with the products so he could know the angle with which to sell to his prospective clients before being sent out. He held her gaze for a moment before responding “I’m not familiar with the products.” “I’ll brief you.” And within a few minutes, she did; passionately and in details. He had to give it to her, the girl was good! If he had the cash, he would have dropped it immediately, which made him wonder what the catch was when she told him she was giving him one of her clients and expected him to close the deal. Without further queries, Martins headed for a client’s office on his first day. This was more than work, it was a condition. He either seals this deal or lose his job even before settling down to it. He felt life was cruel to him to have him encounter someone like Ada after such a long time searching for a job around Lagos. He decided not to dwell too much on the negative side, but he believed it would be a big plus to him and his confidence if he managed to seal the deal. He would have something to brag about at Realty Point Limited. He sighed as he glanced at his wristwatch. It was 2p.m. He had been sitting down for over four hours and had still not seen the mystery client. He had only spoken to the client’s PA who told him he was in a series of meeting and it was up to him to decide whether to stay or go. Ada had called him twice to get update and insisted he stay. Martins was beginning to feel Ada was punishing him for coming late, and maybe there was no client after all. He resolved to wait till 4p.m before calling Ada for further instructions. In order to pass time, he picked one of the magazines on the table with a bored look on his face. As he flipped through the pages, the words became a blur as his mind went to the task at hand: how was he going to convince the owner of the establishment to buy one of their prime estates in Abuja. Judging from his environment, it was obvious the man could afford it. He didn’t need the monthly installment payment offered to clients who couldn’t afford to pay one off but he obviously needed convincing and if Ada couldn’t do it, how was he? To make matters worse, she had hinged this daunting task on his job. He was still pondering on this when he heard a female voice. “Where is Stanley? Ask him to get the car.” He knew that voice! He turned his head to look at the woman that just spoke but her back was turned to him. A small frown furrowed his brows as a name promptly jumped to his head and slid out his lips. “Aisha!” She turned instantly and Martins chuckled in surprise, a disbelieving look on his face as he got to his feet. “Long time no see.” Aisha gave him an amused smile as she walked up to him. “What are you doing here?” “I came to see the MD. You work here, right?” “You came to see the MD? You are the guy from Realty Point; the one Ada sent?” Martins gave her a quizzical look. “How do you know that?” Aisha gave him a look to show he should have it figured out by now. He had. “You’re the PA.” Aisha was the last person Martins expected to see… it was turning out to be a day too much for him to handle. ****************

EPISODE FOUR Martins shivered as he walked into the office. His reaction wasn’t because the air-conditioning was high. In fact, it was perfect considering the weather was hot. His reaction was out of fear of what laid ahead. He turned and looked back, hoping for some moral support but he was not to have it as the door closed gently behind him. He looked forward and was glad the seat was empty. At least he had a moment of respite to gather his wits around him, compose himself and just maybe change his fate for that day since nothing had worked out well thus far. He stood, not sure whether to take the seat before the glass worktable that stood between him and the person that was to determine his fate. He decided not to. Rather than admire the beauty of the well-decorated but practical office, Martins wondered why Aisha had allowed him to see her MD. Considering what had transpired between them, he didn’t think she would have let him come five inches close. Ordinarily, he should have been happy to see her after all, they were old time buddies. All he had to do was ride on that relationship to seal the deal and ultimately win the challenge thrown at him by Ada but the reverse was the case. The fact that Aisha was the P.A of the man he needed to convince only made his job difficult. His throat had constricted in fear when Aisha had looked at him with that beautiful smile of hers and murmured, “This is interesting.” He knew the only interesting thing for Aisha about the situation was that it gave her the opportunity for revenge and considering his job depended on his ability to seal the deal, he had groveled at her feet. He literally would have gone on his knees and held her leg, pleading for mercy if there hadn’t been another occupant in the room. “Aisha, please, I beg you, I need to see him.” “Unfortunately, the MD is in a meeting.” she stated. “And I’m surprised Ada sent you here.” “Why?” “Because she has tried to convince my boss and he is not interested in buying” Martins stared at her in shock, stuttering as he wondered why Ada had sent him on ‘Mission Impossible’. “Ha… I… Maybe…. He… She thought… you know… he might change his mind.” “I doubt that,” she stated, a mocking smile on her face. Martins scratched his head in frustration but stopped when Aisha continued to stare at him with that mocking smile. “Please just give me a chance,” he pleaded. He knew he sounded and looked desperate but he didn’t care. “What I can do is to let the MD know you came.” “Can’t I at least see him?” he asked. He didn’t trust her to do as she said. She probably was just telling him anything to make him leave. “Why?” she demanded as she glared at him, the smile gone from her face. Maybe it was his imagination but Martins thought her look became vindictive. “Aisha, I know you are angry with me and you….” “Angry with you for what?” she queried, feigning ignorance They both knew what but there was no point in going over it. He held her gaze and the statement, ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ jumped to his mind. He had hurt this woman and it was in his best interest if she didn’t release her fury on him; at least not in this way. His look became apologetic. “I’m sorry. I know I caused you deep pain back in school and…” Aisha chuckled, interrupting him. “It’s been what Martins? Three… four years” “Four years actually” “It’s enough to forget” “Is it enough to forgive?” She smiled; a slow sad smile as she held his gaze. “Aisha, please forgive me. My life and livelihood depends on this deal. Ada put me on a condition to get this deal or lose my job. You can punish me in any other way, but help me on this and let me go back to the office with good news” “It is good to see this day come, to see you grovel at my feet. I wasn’t exactly waiting around for it but I’m glad it’s here and I can’t say I’m not enjoying it.” Martins scratched his head while Aisha smiled, obviously enjoying his discomfort. She turned towards the receptionist when her name is called. “The boss wants you.” “Okay.” She turned back to look at Martins. “The meeting is probably over, I’ll see what I can do,” she said and walked away before he could respond. After her previous statement, he had not expected her to do anything but he had been pleasantly surprised when she returned a few minutes later and ushered him into her boss’ office. Now he was standing in the middle of the room, waiting for the man to make an entrance. Even though he had had enough shockers and surprises for one day, the day obviously wasn’t through with him. He wondered which one Aisha’s boss would be: a surprise or a shocker. He turned at the sound of the door being opened to stare at the man who would determine if he kept his job or not. *******continues**********

EPISODE FIVE Martins dragged his feet towards the gate of his house oblivious to the little children who were playing ‘suwe’ in front of the compound. After his meeting with Aisha’s boss, he was sure he didn’t have a job anymore. Now he had an understanding of what Job in the Bible meant when he said what he feared had greatly come upon him. For some reason, he had messed up, stuttering his way through the presentation like a teenage boy who was asking a girl he liked out for the first time and couldn’t find the words. Although disappointed, he wasn’t surprised when the man told him he was not interested and perhaps he could come back when he had better offers. One golden opportunity to save his job and he had lost it to anxiety and nervousness because he thought the day was jinxed already Well, he was sure of one thing: whether the day was jinxed or not, he had definitely jinxed his job and that led to a lot of problems for him, top of which was his house rent. The landlord had come to knock on his door over the weekend to remind him and he had proudly told him there would be no delays this time since he now has a better job. He had even arrogantly said he would move out because he wasn’t satisfied with the living conditions. Of course his landlord had told him he was free to go since there were ten other people ready to take his place. Now that he had no job, he wondered what he would do. Moving out of course was out of the question with the going rate of rent in Lagos especially for first time house rents. With a job, he could afford to; he wasn’t looking for something elegant, just better. Without a job, he would only be shooting himself in the leg. He considered going back to doing menial jobs but knew it would take substantial time before he can raise the money except of course Deji found a way to, which had been the case for some time now. “Don’t enter my house?” One of the children shouted attracting Martins’ attention. He turned and saw a boy standing outside the rectangular box drawn on the ground looking fiercely at a girl who stood with one leg raised. She had a confused look on her face as she gave the rectangular box an assessing look s if to judge how to proceed. She eventually turned to the boy, her look pleading. “Please now,” Martins heard her say “No! Don’t enter my house!” Martins shook his head at the realization that at every level, the strong preyed on the weak. People who have an advantage over you will use it against you if they have to. Martins saw himself in the little girl. He considered going to beg Ada for his job and asking for another opportunity but hadn’t processed the thought through when he was distracted by another voice as he stepped into the compound. “Oga Martins! Welcome oooo.” “Mama Ruka, good evening”. “Evening. I don dey find you since morning.” “E-ehn? Any better? Hope no problem?” “Problem no dey for now but e go soon dey if you no go fetch my water” Martins frowned, not sure what she was talking about. “Which water?” “I hear say na you use my water baff this morning. Which kain rubbish be that one? I fetch the water for you? Oya, halele! Take, go fetch my water back before ground open mouth swallow you for here!” “Ha-ha!” Martins exclaimed, surprised. It was common practice in the compound for people to take other people’s water for various reasons and he couldn’t say he had not been guilty of the act but he especially steered clear of two people in particular, Mama Ruka and Mama Nkiru, because of their troublesome nature. Besides, he had don rub and shine that morning. “Mama Ruka, abeg I no….” She didn’t let him complete the sentence. She interrupts, shaking visibly, her voice raised. It was obvious she was prepared for trouble. “No beg me o! No beg me rara. Just collect this bucket from my hand, go fetch the water come. I don dey wait you since morning.” Other neighbors come out, curious about the noise. They watch the drama unfold “I no carry your water now!” Martins raised his voice in frustration “Hun! Oga Martins you know me! You know me well! Ask Comfort! Comfort glared at her from where she stood and hissed. Mama Ruka had given the young lady a good beating over spreading clothes on the line. Comfort had moved her clothes to create space to spread hers and Mama Ruka had not found it funny. Although Comfort had put up a good fight, Mama Ruka was no match for her since she was huge, tall and had the strength of a bull. The only person who could match her trouble for trouble was Mama Nkiru. When the two of them fought, the others watched and had a good time at it too. Their fights were unpredictable as you never know who would take the day. Because the two women had injured each other often enough when they got physical, by some mutual unspoken agreement, they’ve learnt to keep it verbal. Too consumed with the need for Martins to fetch her water, she did not hear otherwise a slap might have landed on Comfort’s cheek “Collect this bucket from my hand now go fetch the water come!” she addressed Martins, her look fierce. She roughly takes Martins hand to shove the bucket into it but he struggles with her as he protests. “Mama Ruka, wetin now! I say I no use your water! Na rub and shine I take go office today!” “Na lie!” Martins collected the bucket and stared at her, upset. He turned and is about to walk away when she dragged him back with his trouser. “Where you dey go?” “Let me enter my room and put my things down then I’ll fetch your water” Martins suggested. “Enter where? You don see mumu abi? Drop your bag for here. I go help you watch am till you come back. Go fetch this water come first.” “Haba! Mama Ruka. How you go talk say make he go fetch water with suit and tie?” Fidelis, a concerned neighbor interjected. “Hey! Pawpaw head. I call you? How dis one take be your concern? Is it your suit? Abi na your tie? Face your own before I face you this evening ooo” “Mama Nkiru no dey house today. You for sabi who be oga for this compound.” Fidelis mumbled under his breath as he turned to return to his room, but his mumbling was loud enough for Mama Ruka to hear. Without much ado, she ran to him and dragged him back by his shoulder. In a flash two hot slaps landed on his face. Fidelis reacted immediately by hitting her and soon, there was pandemonium in the compound as they both begin to wrestle. It took the other tenants almost twenty minutes to get them separated, each nursing different wounds in different parts of the body. But the man behind the whole fight – Oga Martins – had disappeared from the scene. *********continues************

EPISODE SIX Martins quickly left the reception immediately after prayers and was about to run into the toilet to go and hide in a bid to delay his confrontation with Ada. He knew it was stupid since he was still going to face the inevitable but he didn’t care. He wasn’t ready to lose this job just yet. Unfortunately, Ada was as eager to see him just as he was as eager not to see her. She waylaid him, blocking his path “What happened to your phone? I called you and it rang. After a while, it just kept saying it was switched off.” He opened his mouth to respond but knew he wasn’t going to tell her he had purposely ignored her calls. He had refused to pick her calls because he didn’t have the heart to tell her he had failed; at least not then and the phone had eventually gone off because Mama Ruka had smashed it. The crazy woman had come after him after giving Fidelis some bruises and sustaining some herself. If he had known, he would have gone to fetch the water and avoid the drama and commotion that resulted. The cost of not fetching just one bucket of water was too high compared to what he lost in the process. He thought he had escaped safely to the haven of his room after he disappeared from the scene of the fight but he had been wrong. Since he couldn’t stay locked up forever, he had to come out and that was his undoing. His stomach had growled in hunger since he had not taken anything all day and had decided to go and get garri. He kept trying Deji’s number, hoping he would come home so he didn’t have to go out until the following morning when he was going to work. That way, he could avoid Mama Ruka and hopefully, her temper would have cooled off by the time they eventually saw each other but Deji’s line had been unavailable. He had checked to make sure she was nowhere in sight when he stepped out and had successfully gone to buy the garri when trouble ensued. He was on his way back and was using the torch light of his phone to illuminate his path since there was no light when a hand jerked his trouser unceremoniously from behind and spun him around. In a twinkle of an eye, Mama Ruka had jerked him up against the wall. Martins had to use all the power in him to release himself from the grip of Mama Ruka before she eventually let him go. The force had made him lose his balance, flung the phone from his hand and poured the contents of the nylon he was carrying. As she jerked and poked and abused him, she had stepped on his phone and made a mess of the garri and sugar he bought. Seeing his smashed phone gave him the anger to push her away and warn her never to cross him again. Luckily, she had relented and let him go because at that point, he was ready to murder someone. February 10 was a day he wasn’t going to forget so soon. After everything that had happened, having his phone smashed was just too much. It was the catalyst that turned on his tear duct. He had bawled like a baby and slept off from there. When he woke up, he told himself the day wasn’t going to get the better of him and he was going to do whatever it took to fight for his job. He stared at Ada who was waiting for him to respond. “My phone is bad.” “What happened?” “It’s ermm… It’s a long story” She gave him a queer look. “Okay… I hope you have good news for me” “Ermm….” It was time to face the inevitable. He thought about lying to her, but immediately dismissed the idea. It would only make matters worse. “Well…actually…I did my best…. But…errr…the man… he said he…” They were interrupted by Yemi, a colleague of his. “Martins you have a call” Martins wondered who was calling him but quickly took the outlet it offered him. He didn’t matter who it was as long as it delayed this conversation. “Excuse me,” he said to Ada, not giving her the opportunity to deny his request. He walked to his unit and picked the land line. “Hello!” He looked behind him to see Ada staring at him, waiting. “What happened to your phone? I’ve been calling you” “Sorry, who is this?” “Aisha!” “Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” He glanced behind him to see Ada still watching…. and waiting. “It’s okay. I just wanted to inform you my boss changed his mind. He’s buying five plots” Martins knees weakened in disbelief and relief. *****************

EPISODE SEVEN “Yes! Yes! Yes!” Martins shouted over and over again after his first reaction. He turned excitedly to Ada and the others who were looking at him curiously. “He’s buying five plots,” he stated proudly. It was Ada’s turn to rejoice. She clapped her hands in excitement and nodded her head in approval, beaming. “You did it! I can’t believe you did it!” Martins smiled, feeling cool with himself but mostly grateful he wasn’t going to lose this job. He didn’t think much about what Ada meant when she said she couldn’t believe he did it. He didn’t even want to question why his luck had turned around suddenly and what had made Aisha’s boss change his mind. He was reveling in the euphoria of the good news and the look of respect and admiration he was getting from his colleagues as he followed Ada to her office to think too much about anything. Right now, all was well with his world and he was okay with that. “How did you do it?” Ada asked as they got into her office. Martins smiled not responding and thankfully, Ada wasn’t expecting him to. She continued as if she had not asked him a question he considered vital. “How had he done it?” He had not! Maybe Aisha had. “Aisha won’t let me near him. Maybe she thought I was going to steal her man.” Martins frowned, wondering what Ada was talking about. He couldn’t stop himself from asking. “Is Aisha dating her boss?” he queried surprised by the information. “Truthfully, I don’t know.” For some reason, he felt relieved at the response. Not that Aisha’s boss was bad looking. He didn’t think he was that old either, maybe around thirty-five or forty. He didn’t even think he was married, he had been too nervous to notice if he wore a ring anyway. Besides, not all married men wore their rings. For now, his eligibility wasn’t in question but the idea of Aisha with the man just somehow didn’t sit well with him. His attention was drawn back when Ada continued to speak. “I just know she guards him like a hawk. I’m even surprised you got a meeting with him.” “Really?” She nodded in response. “Every time I went there, she refused to let me see him. That’s why I decided to send you and apparently, it was a good idea.” she beamed. “I have to say, I’m surprised he is buying.” Martins wanted to say “So am I” but kept his mouth shut as his mind began to spin. So Ada had purposely sent him on a mission she knew was impossible from the start and hinged his job on it. That wasn’t fair, he thought. “You don’t know how happy I am that this deal finally pulled through. I’ve been on it for months now.” “You don’t know how happy I am either,” he wanted to say but once again kept his mouth shut. At least he had his job for now and hopefully she wouldn’t hinge another deal on it. That meant being able to pay the landlord when his rent was due. “I’m glad everything worked out,” she smiled. “So am I,” Martins stated. He got to his feet, eager to get out of her office before she gave him another impossible task. He knew he had just been lucky this time. He couldn’t guarantee he would get the same result if he was given another task… except there was an Aisha in that office. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, he knew she had something to do with her boss’ change of heart. “I need to get back to work.” “Before you go….” Martins heart dropped. “I’ve been looking for you!” He turned to see the Human Capital Executive, Ekanem walk in. “Who? Me?” Ada asked “No. Martins. It’s time for your orientation” That was the second best news of the day. He didn’t want to stay a second longer in Ada’s office. “Oh! Okay. Go for that then I’ll see you later,” Ada stated as she took her seat. Martins nodded and was almost out the door when he turned back to her. “Would you have had me sacked if I had not sealed the deal?” He needed to know if she really would have done it especially since she couldn’t do it herself. She stared at him for a moment then shook her head as she responded. “No. I sent you in a moment of inspiration and you sleeping off during the departmental meeting provided the right driving force. And everything turned out well,” she smiled. “Enjoy your orientation and welcome to Realty Point” Martins returned the smile but it was caustic. If only she knew the kind of emotional torture she had put him through. What next for Oga Martins?

EPISODE EIGHT “Where have you been in the past one week?” Martins demanded as he opened the door for Deji who removed his shirt as soon as he came in and slung it over his shoulder. Martins was also bare-chested. The weather was hot and as usual, there was no light. “Anything to eat? I’m hungry,” he stated as he walked to where the pots were and began to open them. “Nothing o! Na left over of yesterday rice wey I cook me sef chop when I come back from work.” Deji turned up his nose in disgust as he saw the dirty plates and empty pots. “Guy, wetin happen? These things dey smell mehn! You no fit wash am?” “Wash wetin? Wey the time. You know when I dey comot for this house? And when I come back, I don too tire,” he said, glad it was a weekend. Asides from the fact that he could take a breather from work, he was also looking forward to a date he had. Well, he wouldn’t call it a date, more a business appointment but it didn’t matter. He was… “Garri dey make I drink?” Deji asked, cutting into his train of thought. “For where? Nothing for this house o!” “Omo mehn na serious hunger be this o! And see as person dey sweat!” he grumbled as he used his shirt to wipe himself clean. He turned it into a fan and began to blow himself. “Why you no chop from where you dey come from? Stella no get food for house?” Stella was Deji’s current girlfriend. She had a hair salon and freely handed over some of the money she made to him. Martins couldn’t fathom why a woman who worked so hard could stick to a man who lazed about and did nothing. Deji waved his hand in dismissal as he changed the topic. “How far with your new work now? How is it going?” “After one week, I’m getting used to it but the first day wasn’t easy.” “”First days at new jobs are never easy” “Hun-hun! This one different. He just be like say…” A loud knock on the door interrupted him. They both stare at each other, frowning. “Who is that?” Deji called out “Na me! Make una come out o!” The person at the door responded. The voice belonged to the caretaker of the building. “Wetin happen now?!” Martins grumbled as Deji went to open the door. The sound of other people’s generator filled the air. “Oga caretaker, good evening, Wetin happen?” Deji asked as the door swung open. “Abeg make una come front yard, meeting dey” “This night?” Martins asked from behind Deji. “Na Latin I speak?” he responded as he walked to the next door to knock. Deji turned to look at Martins who hissed. He walked back into the room to pick a shirt from the hanger and shuffle into his slippers. “I wonder what the issue is now,” he complained as he made his way out. Deji followed him. On getting to the front yard, they saw other neighbors already present. “Una know wetin he wan talk?” Fidelis was asking. “E no go pass increase in rent,” Temisan announced. “”House rent again?” Martins stated chagrined. “How many times they wan increase rent. Considering she had a knack for trouble, he wouldn’t put it past her. Shortly, the caretaker arrived with Baba Ruka, satisfying their curiosity. “E don come to my notice say some of una no dey abide by the rules and regulations of this house. No be by force o! If you no fit follow the rules, pack comot. Another person dey wey go collect am and wey no go give me headache.” He paused for effect as he looked at each of them. “Another thing wey I hear be say una dey fight on top water” “Hian!” Who be the aproco?” Temisan asked no one in particular. Mama Nkiru eyeballs her, her nose turned up in disdain. “No be today water no dey. If una like, make una fight, kill una sef, Make una just no spoil anything for this house. Una dey hear me so.” Nobody responded since they knew he didn’t expect them to. “Then, NEPA bill don come. EPISODE NINE He perused the menu as the waiter stood patiently beside him, waiting for him to place his order. It wasn’t that he was indecisive about what to order, it was his pocket that cried out in protest. How could a N50 bottle of water cost N500?! Wetin happen? He thought as he glanced at the waiter who was still standing diligently beside him. He couldn’t afford to waste money especially since he still had his NEPA bill to pay and had to get to work and back every day for the rest of the month. The thought of the NEPA bill brought to mind the previous night when he had encouraged his co-tenants to patronize their services at Realty Point. With an affordable well structured payment plan, they would be home owners in no time. A lot of them had shown interest and he had proudly given them his new complimentary card. He smiled at the thought only to realize the waiter was still waiting. “I really don’t know what to order; maybe when my date arrives.” “Ok sir,” the waiter replied, nodding politely as he returned to wherever he appeared from. Martins breathed easily, glad not to have the guy hovering over him. He closed the menu, dropped it on the table and took in his surroundings. The place was called Rekks Gardens. It had a wonderful lawn with big trees that shielded you from the hot afternoon sun. Benches were positioned in different places across the lawn. There was also an adult swing where two people could enjoy the coolness of an evening breeze. Not far from the lawn was the bar where he currently sat and observed the other patrons present.; a couple who sat together and were obviously lost in whatever they were discussing, two guys eating fish suya and beer and chitchatting like women and a guy who sat alone, drinking a bottle of beer with his gaze on the TV. Martins glanced at the TV and was surprised the man’s eyes were fixed on it since there wasn’t anything interesting showing. Rather than brood on what the man was thinking, he turned his thoughts to how much Rekks Gardens made when there was a full house with the kind of price list they had. Located in a high end commercial area and close to the road, he imagined it was a lot. The property also shared borders with banks and businesses, increasing its worth to probably ten times its initial value. And from what he could see, converting the lawn to an events arena rather than just a relaxation spot could rake in more money if they were not already doing that. Also, utilizing the space they had to build accommodations wouldn’t be a bad idea. He thought of what the asking price of the place would be if they were interested in selling and a smile formed on his face. He liked the way he was beginning to think. One week in Realty Point and he was seeing prospects in every real estate he came in contact with. He was learning a lot and he was learning fast. He made a mental note to see if he could talk to the manager after his meeting. The thought of his meeting made him glance at his wristwatch. Aisha was thirty minutes late already and since his phone was bad, he couldn’t get a courtesy call or text explaining why and if she was close by. He hoped she wasn’t going to cancel on him. If she did, he deserved it. He was even surprised she’d given him audience so far considering what he did to her. It was more than he deserved. Aisha was his classmate in school and they had been amicable friends until SOC 306 had come between them. Martins was the class rep for Mr. Gbadamosi’s dreaded SOC 306 class; a position he earned because he was the student with the highest CGPA in his class at the beginning of the year. It was a position of pride, and Martins made the most of it. Because he acted as the extended hand of Mr. Gbadamosi, Martins earned a lot of enemies for this reason but he didn’t care, he just wanted to impress the man and get through the course without any hitch too. He wasn’t going to allow his peers reaction to him cost him an extra year he couldn’t afford. On a particular day, Gbadamosi instructed him to collect the assignment he had given the students two weeks earlier, and submit them at his table first thing the next morning. Martins judiciously went round the class to inform everyone present and make them understand he would be submitting the assignment by 9a.m the next day. At exactly 9a.m the following day, Martins made good on his promise and submitted the assignments even though a large number of the students had begged him to hold off till 10a.m Aisha was one of them and she had been more aggrieved because she was his friend. If his treachery had ended there, it would have been okay but because he didn’t make that sacrifice, Aisha had ended up with an extra year. She had cried, called him names, thrown tantrums and swore she would make him pay. That was why he had been scared when he saw her but she had surprised him. He smiled, shaking his head in disbelief at the thought of what she did for him. He turned his gaze away from the lawn and looked in the direction of the entrance. His jaw almost dropped as he stared at Aisha as she walked towards him. With long hair falling over her shoulders, the shimmering short clingy dress, stiletto heels and a nice simple purse, she looked like someone who stepped out of a fashion magazine. She didn’t look flamboyant; she just looked elegant. The other day he’d seen her at her office, she had looked chic and corporate and if she gave off even half of the sexuality that oozed from her right now, he didn’t notice. He swallowed, wishing he had ordered for a bottle of water. He lips were suddenly dry and he felt thirsty. Gathering his wits around him, he got to his feet, put a platonic smile on his face and welcomed his date. The story continues

EPISODE TEN Martins walked into his office, a spring to his steps. After a short, eventful but disaster-free weekend, he felt alive and invigorated and his date with Aisha contributed to it. He smiled at the thought of her. These days, his life was full of so much drama, it was a sharp contrast to just sit and talk with a woman you believe should hate you for the rest of eternity and enjoy each other’s company. She was funny, witty and had managed to dodge most of his questions. A frown formed on his face as he thought about their conversation again. “So?” he prompted, smiling at her. “So what?” she asked as she stared at him, a mocking smile on her face. “You didn’t answer my question” “Which is?” “What made you change your mind? Why did your boss decide to buy five plots later? What did you tell him? I know I messed up with my presentation so…. Why the change of heart?” “That is not a question, those are questions,” she teased. Martins smiled. “We could pick them one after the other. What made your boss change his mind?” “Hmmm….” Aisha smiled in response to his question as she took a sip of her drink. At least she had stuck to something he could afford and he had respected himself and refused to take anything. He didn’t need anyone to tell him Aisha was her own woman and could pay her bills but for him, picking up the tab was now a matter of pride. After what she had done for him, he just wanted to please her. Even though he now knew he wouldn’t have lost his job if he had not brought in the deal, the fact that he had when others had failed scored him points… and by others, he meant Ada She shrugged when she finally responded. “I guess he read some of the materials you brought in and decided it was a good investment after all” “So it was not like you personally convinced him?” “My boss doesn’t make a business decision except he is convinced himself. If he is not, no matter what I say, he won’t do it. You can’t make a good business investment if you let your sentiments and emotions get in the way, he tells me.” “Are you two dating?” Martins asked, the words falling from his mouth before he could stop them. She stared at him, taken aback at his question and he knew he had goofed. He quickly remedied that by pointing his finger at the easiest target he could find. “Ada seems to think so,” he stated. The girl wasn’t there to defend herself and in fairness to him, she had put the thought in his head. “I don’t bloody care what Ada thinks,” Aisha retorted, her brows furrowing in anger. Her reaction had been so strong, Martins couldn’t help but ask why she didn’t like Ada, especially since she had refused to let her see her boss for a meeting. Rather than explain, Aisha had become defensive. “What is this? Twenty Questions? I thought this was supposed to be a thank-you lunch?” she retorted, glaring at him. “It is. I’m just curious!” “From where I’m seated, it feels like an interrogation room and curiosity kills the cat,” she rejoined and he had apologized but he couldn’t help wondering what the story was. Aisha’s reaction towards Ada was very strong and her failure to discuss it only made him more curious. He however decided to let it go and had enjoyed the rest of his time with her. Although he’s refrained from asking her any further questions that would tick her off, he had to ask her why she had allowed him to see her boss. She had stared at him, fiddling with the straw in her drink and had given him the strangest response. “Because I want you to owe me Martins; because there might just be a time when I will need you to do something for me and you will not be able to say no.” The response had put him on edge then but he had told himself not to think about it. Even now, he didn’t want to. He was in a good mood and he didn’t want anything to spoil it. Unfortunately, he wasn’t going to have his way as a pile of files hit his table. He looked up to see Ada standing before him. “You need to look through these files. These are the clients the guy you replaced was handling. Study them and know the status of their transactions with us. You are going to be following up on them and I suggest you start early. There are still more.” Martins looked at the files in dread, afraid to ask how much more. The BROUHAHA continues

EPISODE ELEVEN Getting through a long day was enough stress, but having to contend with the traffic that plagued Lagos roads was something, like other commuters, Martins wished he could take away from his day. He was physically and emotionally drained and having to deal with a stubborn customer he inherited from the former marketer who occupied his position had contributed to it. The customer had subscribed to paying in installments for two plots of land at Roseberry Estate in Agbara, Ogun State but had defaulted in his bank standing order for more than three months. This was against the terms of the contract and the order had been revoked according to company’s policy. Since he was now Martins client, he had been obligated to attend to him when he showed up in the office. The man who spoke with a Calabar accent refused to accept that he had been revoked for defaulting in payment for three months. He argued that he was facing financial distress and should have been considered for a longer period. Martins explained he would be reinstated to continue his payment if he could make up the remaining payment in bulk, but he refused the offer, insisting on continuing his monthly installments. Because Martins had also insisted he couldn’t do that, he resorted to shouting and causing a scene. Ada had arrived on the scene and taken him away. Martins had been so upset about the issue, he was unproductive for the remaining time in the office. He had not even bothered to seek Ada out and ask her how she handled the issue and if she gave any concessions to the man. He hoped not. The man’s attitude was terrible and his manner of communication annoying. People like that made it difficult to show them good customer service. He hissed aloud as he thought about the guy again. “Wetin happen?” The fat woman who was seated beside him in the bus glared at him. “Why you dey hiss for my ear?” Martins gave her an annoying look. “I no understand. I no fit hiss again? Abeg madam stay your lane o!” “Which lane? Which stupid lane? Na for my ear they say make you kon hiss?” “”Carry your ear now if e dey where I dey hiss. You no see say this place tight?” “Oga e don do,” one of the other passengers said “See this woman now! So make I no talk again because your ear dey there?” “Na talk be dat abi na hiss?” “E don do!” “I no blame you. Na because I dey inside here with you” “Ah! See this one! Carry your car put for road now,” she commented with disdain “Na wa o! See wetin Lagos traffic dey cause,” another passenger commented, smiling “Temperature rising…” “…you give me fever,” two girls seated beside each other said, completing each other’s statement and laughing. Martins hissed again, not bothering to respond. The woman glared at him again but he ignored her. All he wanted to do was get home, have a cold shower, eat and sleep. That wasn’t going to be until another one and half hour later when he alighted at his bus stop and walked towards his compound. It was almost 8p.m and the area was plunged in darkness with the sound of generator creating a tune he could never get used to. Life could be better than this. He didn’t know how but he knew life could be better and as long as he drew breath, he would make it better. He walked into the compound, glad he didn’t have to greet anyone as he walked in and made his way to his door. He applied his keys but the door refused to open. He knocked. “Deji! Deji!” No response! He stared at the door in puzzlement, wondering what was going on. He tried his keys again but they didn’t open. He patted his pocket in search of his phone only to remember he didn’t have a phone. “Oh-oh!” he grumbled. He was too tired for this. He tried his key again, wondering when the door began to have issues when Rotiimi passed “Rotimi abeg you see Deji for house?” “No! I never see am today but e no too tey wey I come back” “Oh-oh! What is this now?!” “Wetin happen?” “My door no open and the thing work correct this morning” “Landlord don lock am now. See!” Martins looked up to see a newly created padlock on his door. “He say if na midnight you come back, make you come see am for him house before you enter…” “What?????” What is Oga Martins’ landlord up to sef? EPISODE TWELVE Martins stared confused and utterly at a loss on what to do. His rent was not due yet and although the landlord had been harassing him about it, he shouldn’t have gone as far as locking his room since he did not owe yet. Martins wanted to ask Rotimi if he had an idea of why the landlord locked the room but he was long gone. He stamped his feet in frustration, upset he had to walk down to the landlord’s house which was three streets away since the man didn’t stay in the same compound himself. He knew he probably looked like a school boy throwing tantrums but he didn’t care. He however advised himself that the earlier he got started on the journey, the quicker he can get into his room and the comfort of his bed. Tomorrow was another working day and he needed to rest properly. It took the last ounce of strength in him to get himself up and head towards the landlord’s house. This was why he needed a car. If he had one, he would not have been harassed by the fat woman in the bus and going to the landlord’s place wouldn’t be costing him so much energy but with the knowledge of real estate he had now, he would rather build his house first and get a car later. He occupied himself with thoughts of being a landlord who treated his tenants with respect until he got to his destination “Is daddy at home?” He asked the landlord’s 8-year-old grandson who ran out of the building just as he arrived. “My daddy is not at home, grandpa is at home” the young lad answered and quickly dashed off. Martins wondered where he was running to at that time of the night but he was too occupied with his own issues to care for too long. He stepped into the building and knocked gently on the door even though the door was slightly open. “Who is that ooo?” A woman’s voice answered from a room inside the house. Martin’s recognized the voice; it was the landlord’s second wife. “It’s me, Martins. I wan see baba landlord.” There was no response for a few minutes and Martins was beginning to get agitated when the landlord appeared from an inner room. “Oga Martins. I don dey find you. Na you wan pursue me for my house abi?” The landlord queried as he opened the door ajar and glared at Martins “Baba landlord, I no understand you? How can I chase you from your house?” “I sabi people like you na. You go dey act gentle. 419 all of you. I will send you away before you use your omo ibo sense to hijack my house from me” the landlord stated, in a heavily accented Yoruba tone. “I no sabi wetin you dey talk o!” The landlord went to a shelf that looked like it had seen better days and began searching through some old CD plates he had atop his TV set. “I kept this thing here now! Hey! These children!” After a few minutes, he withdrew something and shouted triumphantly. ”E-ehn!” He turned back to Martins. “If you say you no understand, I go explain to you. We go sabi who dey lie” The landlord handed over what he had with him to Martins. Martins received it only to realize it was his business card. He stared at it in confusion wondering how the landlord got his business card and why his room was locked because of it. “Baba landlord, na my card be this. How my card wan take hijack your house from you?” “Turn to the back” The landlord ordered and Martins did as instructed. “Wetin dey for there?” He asked. It was then Martins realized what was happening. He wanted to burst into laughter, but he knew he shouldn’t even smile. It would be utterly disrespectful and would only add more to the issue at hand. Without looking up, he gently whispered “Sack Your Landlord!” “When you talk am dat time say you go soon pack comot, na lie you dey lie. So, you don dey work for where dem dey encourage una to sieze house from your landlord. No be so?” “Oga landlord, no be wetin you think ooo…” “I resemble mumu? Abi because I no go school, you think say I be nonentity? Sack your landlord, wetin dat one mean? See before you sack me, I go sack you. Na only one month and three days remain for your rent. I go pay you off. I no need you to pay me for another year. Go pay another landlord, the one wey you go fit sack.” “Baba landlord abeg calm down.” Martins stated when he saw the man was getting worked up, Besides, he wasn’t ready to move out yet so he had to find a way to convince him he was not at risk. “Baba landlord, ‘Sack your landlord’ na my company slogan. Na house and land we dey sell. Na tenants and middle class citizens we dey target. We wan make everybody get roof for him head so that one day, tenant sef go become landlord and he go fit pack comot for the house wey he rent. As he dey pack comot na him we dey refer to as ‘Sack your landlord’” Martins explained, hoping it was enough It wasn’t. The landlord frowned at him as he spoke, “If you wan pack comot, go now! EPISODE THIRTEEN “In life, two things are guaranteed to come your way: opportunities and challenges. How you choose to deal with these two things is what determines your outcome in life”, his MD had said this morning when he was exhorting them for the day after the morning prayers. The quote kept ringing in Martins’ head, as he mentally took note of how he dealt with the opportunities and challenges that have come his way in recent times. He concluded he hadn’t done badly but concerning the issue with his landlord, he was in a fix. The man had been adamant about giving him the key to his room, insisting he would sack Martins before he corrupted the other tenants but he had finally conceded after Martins promised he would leave the house at the end of the month. Martins knew he wasn’t going anywhere. He couldn’t afford to. Getting a new place meant paying for two years rent with legal and agreement fees. He didn’t have that kind of money and even if he did, he would rather buy one of the landed properties they sold and complete the payment in instalments than give all that money to another landlord. He needed to come up with a way to make the landlord continue to let him live in the house until he was ready to leave. He had thought of asking Deji to front for him since the landlord rarely came to the compound and didn’t go around checking who was lodging who as long as his money got paid but he had changed his mind knowing the caretaker would either figure his plan out and ruin it or one of the tenants would go and do amebo for the landlord as they did with the issue of his complementary card, which was what got him in this mess in the first place. He shook his head in self empathy as he realized he had more challenges than opportunities. He wished more opportunities would come his way and he could live the life he had always dreamt. If only wishes were truly horses and dreams could materialize with the wave of a wand. He sighed as he focused on the work in front of him. He still had a pile of files to sort through and wasn’t looking forward to it. He realized paper work bore him and he preferred to go on the field. Although his experience on the field thus far had not been smooth, in retrospect, it had been exciting. A smile touched his lips as the memory of his first day and first task came to mind. He was still curious about what the story was between Aisha and Ada but dispensed with the thought as Johnson, a colleague of his walked in, his voice filled with anger. Everyone in the room turned their attention to him. “What do you mean he threw your things out? He has no right to!” he paused briefly while Martins stared at him, wondering what was going on. “So what if it is his house? And legally, he’s supposed to give you six months notice. He can’t just wake up one day and throw your things out or tell you to move out, it’s not done! Where does he want you to go?” Martins is paying rapt attention “You know what, just go and stay at Moji’s place. I’m going to call Femi to take it up. We are suing the guy. It is rubbish! He can’t treat you like that.” “What happened?” Tinu, another colleague asked as soon as Johnson got off the phone. “Imagine! My sister has been living in a house for three years. No prior notice, nothing and you wake up one morning and tell her to move out the next day or you’ll throw her things out because you need the place urgently. Who does that?” “My landlord!” Martins responded instantly. Everyone turned to look at him as if just realizing he was in the room. “He locked me out two nights ago and said he was going to refund the rest of my money to me because I gave my cards to other tenants and he saw sack your landlord on it” “You’re kidding,” Johnson stated in disbelief “These landlords are unbelievable! So he wants to throw you out because of that?” Tinu asked, her voice filled with incredulity “I can’t say I blame him,” Lola supplied. “If you are the landlord and you saw something like that, won’t you feel threatened?” “That doesn’t mean they have to treat people inhumanly,” Tinu argued “Not all landlords are bad people.” They all turned up their noses in disagreement. “So basically you are saying when you become a landlord, you will treat people badly too!” “No way!” Johnson protested “I’m not going to treat people like that. If you want to throw someone out of your house, the law offers guidelines.” “Like…?” Martins queried, curious “You should give six months’ notice to a yearly tenant. If the six months expire and the tenant doesn’t move out, you serve another seven days notice of owner’s intention to recover property. If the tenant still doesn’t move out after then, you go to court” “As a tenant, is it not just better to move out than to go to court?” Martins asked “What if you don’t have anywhere to go?” Johnson stated “Or you don’t have the money to pay?” Martins rejoined, a plan beginning to form in his head

EPISODE FOURTEEN Deji was laughing at the so called plan Martins had while Martins stood, arms akimbo, a quizzical frown on his face. “What’s funny about what I said?” Deji tried to respond but only laughed out harder, annoying Martins who hissed and turned his gaze away from him in exasperation to the different happenings on the street. It was a busy night, which was not unusual since PHCN had taken light again, forcing people to come out of the darkness and heat that assaulted them to the coolness of the evening breeze. There was a paraga joint where a couple of men sat, drinking and arguing loudly, two kids ran after each other, playing along the dirt road while their mothers chatted away, not mindful of their children, three girls walked one after the other into the compound directly opposite theirs, carrying buckets of water while various people patronized the open shops but the person with the greatest patronage didn’t have what one could call a shop. It was a stall with two benches and not too far from the benches, a fire blazed. On it was the hot groundnut oil used to prepare the fried yam, fish and plantain that had people queuing. Martins wondered if she wasn’t putting something else in her dundun, akara and dodo since he was also an addict. He had actually come out with Deji to get some before the discussion about his plans had come up. He moved towards the woman but was held back by Deji who had succeeded in controlling himself “Guy free me joor!” Martins stated, upset “Relax now, why you dey vex?” “Why I no go vex? I dey tell you something important, you dey laugh like say I be clown” “Okay no vex but there’s a reason I was laughing.” The continuous sound of a horn hooting had Martins turning to look at the road. The little children had just run past the car and the driver had alighted, swearing angrily and insulting the mothers for not watching their children and risking their lives. The women were immediately defensive, returning curses for curses. “E don do now!” Deji shouted, addressing the two parties. “Oga enter your car and go. Why you dey do like woman?!” “Leave this people,” Martins stated. “Why were you laughing?” Deji turned his attention back to Martins as the disagreement between the women and the man died down. “Your plan is funny?” “No it’s not! It’s a brilliant plan!” Deji scoffed. “Martins, you want to continue to stay in this house on the basis that landlord didn’t serve you a six months notice even though your rent will expire in a month and.…” “That buys me time to plan myself,” Martins cut in “…you think worse case, he will take you to court and you might end up not paying rent after the whole case.” “Which is what makes it a brilliant plan!” “Look around you,” Deji commanded. Martins was a bit taken aback at the instruction. “I’m serious, look around you.” He did! “Does this place look like a civilized area?” He asked, pausing a moment before answering his own question. “It’s not! It’s in civilized areas landlords give tenants notice. Here, they don’t! Rather than serve you a paper through their lawyer, they will serve you a beating through their thugs. If you think the case will end up in court, you are wrong! You will end up in the hospital and probably spend more money than you would have if you had just packed out!” Martins stared at his friend, subdued. “`So what do you suggest I do?” “Move out when your rent expires! You’ve always wanted to move out anyway!” “And go where?” Martins shouted in frustration. “I don’t have any money! I just started working remember?!” “Don’t worry, we’ll find a way,” Deji stated after a moment which made Martins give him a skeptical look. “We still have a month to figure out something, come on! Make we go buy wetin we wan chop” Deji urged him and they walked towards the dundun woman to join the queue. For the rest of the night, Martins forgot about his housing problem but alone with his thoughts at night on the bed while Deji snored beside him, he couldn’t help but worry. Housing was a major issue in this part of the world and he couldn’t imagine joining the throng of people who lived on the streets. He had often heard stories of people living under the bridge and had never given it a second thought since it didn’t affect him. Now, faced with the possibility of joining such people, he wondered how they coped in harsh weather. The government really had to do something about the housing deficit and make it affordable for low income earners like him. Mortgage was a way of making that possible and for the first time, he wondered why the mortgage system wasn’t working. If it was working in other parts of the world, why couldn’t it work here? There was no light, no house, inadequate social amenities; nothing worked he thought in righteous indignation, blaming the government for his present condition. Why couldn’t they just make life easy for the common man?! He sighed at the question, still angry as he changed position. Suddenly his nose is assaulted by the acrid smell of smoke as heard noises outside. He quickly gets to his feet, refusing to believe what he heard as he slaps Deji awake from his slumber “Get up! Get up!” “What is it?” Deji asked drowsily. “Wetin dey burn?” he asked as he sits up, frowing Martins didn’t have to respond. The noise from the open door provided the answer “Everyone go out, the house is burning!”

EPISODE FIFTEEN The day was gradually breaking as Martins stood beside Deji who sat down on the pavement looking tired after one of the longest two hours of their lives. If the circumstances were different, he probably would have laughed at the soot that covered some parts of his face but there was nothing funny about the situation. Some of the women wailed while the men held their head in despair. Thankfully, no life had been lost but he couldn’t say the same for their properties. They had managed to salvage what they could but ‘the fire had spread quickly considering the house was old and hadn’t gone through any major maintenance for years. A grotesque shape of the house was what was left and they either sat or stood around it in despair, tired from putting out the fire. The gathering was a solemn one and nobody said a word, except a few people from neighboring compounds who came around to commiserate with them. They were each lost in their thoughts, probably thinking of what to do next. It seemed speaking would usher them into the reality they now faced: they were homeless, so they kept quiet, not willing to deal with the truth just yet even though it stared them in the face. Martins however was somewhat insulated from the shock of being rendered homeless suddenly since he was already threatened by the possibility. Now he didn’t have a choice than to look for a place to stay. He heaved a deep sigh wondering how he was going to raise the money especially in so short a time. His thoughts were interrupted by the cute innocent voice of Fatimoh, Mama Ruka’s last child who sat beside her mother, her arms on her laps. “Mami, ebi n pa mi!” Everyone turned to look in their direction, waiting for Mama Ruka’s response. Although Martins wasn’t very proficient at speaking Yoruba, he had an ear for the language. The girl had simply told her mother she was hungry. He watched as the cute little child with chubby cheeks stared up at her mother, waiting for her to respond. Unfortunately, Mama Ruka was too consumed with grief to attend to her daughter’s needs. They had lost virtually everything and were left with only the clothes on their back, a travelling box containing only God knows what and the generator on which her husband sat on. “Mami, ebi n pa mi!” Fatimoh prodded again, her brows furrowed with what he would call a frown if she were an adult. Since she was a little child, it looked like she wanted to cry. Mama Ruka burst into tears, activating her daughter’s tear gland as well. Fatimoh wailed suddenly, frightened by her mother’s reaction. A neighbor quickly picked up the girl and pacified her but it was to no avail. The girl kept weeping and the more she wept, the more Mama Ruka wept. The neighbor decided to take her home and feed her, suggesting that the familiar faces of her siblings and other children who had been moved away from the compound during the fire outbreak would also have a calming effect on her. Although Mama Ruka’s response was alarming, it was understandable. How did she begin to explain to her little baby that they had no food, that things would most likely be difficult for a while, that life as they knew it would change until they were able to get back on their feet? Children were supposed to be shielded from such things, having no worries or responsibilities but in an economy like Nigeria’s and in a world were nothing was fair, there was no avoiding it. Matins sighed again, feeling sober from his thoughts and was about to sit down beside Deji when, Mama Nkiru stood up from where she sat and marched straight to Temisan who was being comforted by Comfort. As if watching an action movie, she pushed Comfort aside unceremoniously and landed Temisan a slap. It was Temisan’s cry of pain that loosened their immobility but before they could get to them, Mama Nkiru had landed the girl another slap and Temisan had reacted by grabbing her buba and biting her. Temisan’s teeth were still stuck in Mama Nkiru’s arm when they tried to separate the two women. “Ye! Ye! Ye!” Mama Nkiru cried out in pain as they managed to pry Temisan off her. “Do you want to bite her arm off?” Chris demanded in exasperation, glaring at Temisan “Don’t look at me like that o! Don’t look at me like that!” Temisan stated in a defensive tone. You did not ask her why she slapped me?! Why would she slap me?! What did I do?” she cried out, venting at Mama Nkiru who was examining the mark she left on her arm. “I’m not Comfort that you think you can just beat o!” she addressed Mama Nkiru as she folded her arms across her chest in a defensive stance “Are you not the one that started the fire?!” Mama Nkiru accused, her voice filled with anger and bitterness “Who started the fire?!” They all turned at the sound of the Landlord’s voice as he stormed into the compound. “Ori iya mi o!” he stated as he stared at what was left of his house. “Who burnt down my house?” he demanded in anger as he stared at his tenants. EPISODE SIXTEEN Human beings were naturally ingrained with the instinct to survive, to exonerate self and shelve responsibility when the chips were down. No one wanted to take the fall for another or step up and be liable for other people’s actions. In fact, people didn’t want to be liable for their own actions and would rather shift the blame to someone else if it didn’t make them look good. Only men and women of great character and virtue stood up to the plate and took not just the credit when things were sunny and bright but also the blame when they were dark and cloudy. Unfortunately, none of Martins house mates were men and women of great character and virtue and neither was Martins. The moment the landlord demanded to know who burnt down his house, accusations flew all around. “Baba landlord na Temisan,” Mama Nkiru pointed accusingly at the girl, glaring at her. “No be me!” Temisan quickly stated in her defense. “I’m not the one!” “Na you! Na you no dey off your candle when you wan sleep!” “Na lie! Na your generator or Fidelis generator start the matter!” Fidelis stared at Temisan, astounded! “Wetin be my own for the matter? How my generator start fire?” “Your generator no catch fire?!” Temisan queried, her tone accusing “E be like say something dey worry you! Who tell you say na my generator catch fire?! Gen wey I no even put on yesterday. How e wan take start the fire now wen I no get fuel? Abi Chris?! “I no know o!” Chris stated, refusing to corroborate him Fidelis hissed, upset at his unpatriotic attitude. “No be my gen catch fire, na Rotimi own” “All of una no serious! My gen catch fire, e kon mean say na me start am? No be when the house don dey burn the gen catch fire? Abi no be all of us run commot for inside compound together when the gen catch fire? Answer me now!” “So wetin kon start the fire?” Baba Ruka queried “How you wan make I know,” Rotimi retorted. “No be inside my room I dey when I hear fire fire!” “Me too!” Martins stated “So how the fire kon start now?” Chris asked “Make we ask you!” Fidelis rejoined, a comeback barb at Chris for not supporting him “Ask me as as how? No be me start the fire so how I wan take know how e start?” “But na one person first shout fire fire before all of us come out now!” Baba Ruka pointed out “Una no wan tell me who burn down my house abi?” the landlord stated glaring at them “I no go say na me do something when no be me now,” Chris said, his voice tinged with sarcasm “Who kon do am?! Who do am?!” Baba landlord shouted, his voice bordering on hysteria. “Who burn down my house?!” “Baba landlord cool down. This thing no be rocket science,” Deji stated, finally joining in the conversation. “Me I dey sleep when Martins wake me up say something dey smell. Martins, which person voice you hear?” “I no hear voice, na smell I hear and when I open door, I see Chris dey shout fire fire!” Martins responded “Na Temisan kon knock on my door say fire dey burn” “Me too, na smell I smell am. Na him make me go call Chris!” “Na lie! Na you start am!” Mama Nkiru accused her “Eh! This woman take your time o! Take your time! Whether na you start the fire sef, you kon dey look for who to blame!” “Na me you dey talk to like that?” Mama Nkiru demanded already advancing towards Temisan who began to look around for a weapon “Me?” “You just dare come near me whether I no go break something for your head. You think say na that one wey you dash me slap abi?” Temisan said, brandishing a big wood from the debris Chris and Deji quickly stepped in between the two women “I go beat you, your people no go recognize you!’ Mama Nkiru threatened, trying to push past Deji who was holding her back “And I go break your head, you go die!” Temisan returned, equally pushing past Chris “Wetin be all these rubbish sef?!” Rotimi stated, glaring at the parties fighting and those separating. “Abeg make una leave them joor! If they wan break each other head, make them break am! Every time una two go dey fight like say una collect each other husband! Leave them joor!” “Eh! Eh! Eh! See, all these drama you people are doing, I’m not falling for it o! You people better start talking now, e-ehn!” “Everybody don talk now! Every man don speak for himself,” Rotimi pointed out. “From everything wey everybody talk now, nobody know who start the fire” “E-ehn! Una no wan confess abi?! You people want to play me wayo. No worry. All of una dey house arrest until you tell me who burn down my house!” Martins ears pricked at the mention of house arrest. It was a weekday and that meant he had to be at work. “Ermmm… Baba Landlord, I no understand” “No worry, you go soon understand!” The landlord turned and signaled to the caretaker and two hefty looking guys whose presence they had been oblivious of because of their argument. The caretaker put a padlock on the gate which was still standing and handed the key to one of the guys. “Now you understand. You people better start confessing.. ****

EPISODE SEVENTEEN If they thought the day was bad enough, it just grew worse. Martins wished he could fast-forward time and not have to deal with the present situation but there was no avoiding it. Reality was different from fantasy and his reality right now was that he was held hostage in a burnt down house and couldn’t go to work. With the current situation of things, he obviously needed his job and not showing up for work without a plausible excuse was reason for him to be fired. He had pleaded with the landlord, insisting he knew nothing about the cause of the fire but his pleas had been in vain. The man had insisted they find the culprit or remain where they were. Some of the other tenants had threatened and cursed, saying he had no right but the landlord had not bothered to respond. He had just called his goons to attention and given the order that if anyone tried anything funny, they should be beaten until they came to their senses and cooperated. Everyone had calmed down since the sight of the two hefty guys was scary. “What am I going to do now?” Martins whispered to Deji who was standing beside Rotimi while casting a furtive glance at their imposed bodyguards “Maybe you should call your office and explain things to them,” Deji suggested, also whispering back “I don’t know the number to my office!” Martins explained, stating the problem “Don’t you have the number of anyone there?” Rotimi asked “No! I just started work?” “Guy, it’s been almost a month. You should have someone’s number. You guys don’t call yourselves?!” Deji asked with slight irritation “What are you people talking about?” Chris asked, whispering as well as he joined them “I need to call my office and explain things but I don’t know anybody’s number and I don’t have a phone they can reach me on!” Martins explained, glaring at Deji as he said the part about not having a phone Deji looked away, not bothering to respond as Fidelis also joined them. “Wetin dey happen now? Na like this we go dey?” “At least until we find out who started the fire,” Chris supplied “But this is ridiculous. This man can’t just keep us under lock and key” “He already did,” Deji stated succinctly. “The question is what are we going to do about it? And with all the mouth you guys were making, I thought there would be a rescue squad here already.” “Which rescue squad?” Rotimi queried “Don’t you have people you can call? Like Fidelis said, this is ridiculous. We have jobs, lives; things to do. Should my life be on hold because someone’s house got burnt?” Martins asked, beginning to get upset, his voice no longer hushed “Guy calm down! These guys fit enter you,” Deji warned but Martins was past caring “Give me your phone,” he demanded, waving his hand in a gesture to hurry Deji up. “Is there credit there? This is totally unfair and unacceptable. We cannot be held hostage because a house got burnt! And I’m sure it’s unlawful. When we are not criminals!” “Are you sure we are not criminals? Someone started the fire” Rotimi asked “I’m sure I’m not a criminal. I can’t speak for you though,” Martins replied, his voice sarcastic “Who do you want to call? A lawyer?” Chris asked in excitement. “Maybe we can even sue the landlord” “On what grounds?” Deji asked, frowning slightly at him as he handed Martins his phone “I don’t know! That’s the lawyer’s job,” he replied and turned his attention to Martins who was already dialing a number. “Ask the lawyer on what grounds we can sue the landlord” “I’m not calling a lawyer,” Martins supplied “Who are you now calling?” Deji asked, his frown deepening “Aisha!” It took Deji a moment before the name registered. “Aisha Bello?” he asked, giving his friend a quizzical look. “You know Aisha Bello’s number offhand?” he asked in an incredulous voice Martins didn’t bother to respond. He put the phone to his ear as it began to ring “I can’t believe you know Aisha Bello’s number offhand,” Deji stated again, still unable to comprehend the fact. Chris looked from one to the other, asking the question on both Fidelis and Rotimi’s minds. “Who is Aisha Bello?” Deji didn’t respond as he stared in disbelief at his friend who was already speaking into the phone. “Hello Aisha” “Who is this?” Aisha asked. From her tone of voice, Martins could imagine her frowning. “It’s me Martins. Good morning” “Good morning. Wasap!” The frown had disappeared and was replaced with a certain curiosity. “I need your help,” Martins stated. He didn’t wait for her to ask what kind of help. He could imagine her skepticism already and quickly delved into the crux of the matter. “I’m being held hosta… ” Martins didn’t finish the sentence when the phone was snatched unceremoniously from his hand and dismantled. “What is…?”He held his tongue, not completing the sentence at the menacing look on the guy’s face. He immediately had goose bumps and instinctively moved back, putting distance between him and the guy. Without saying a word, the guy turned away from him and collected every other person’s phone, rendering them incommunicado. It suddenly dawned on Martins that there was no way out except they found the culprit. The issue was how they were going to get the person to own up. The BROUHAHA continues

EPISODE EIGHTEEN The landlord returned around 12p.m. to find out if they had repented of their ways and willing to hand over the culprit. Since there was no culprit to hand over considering the fact that no one had confessed to starting the fire, he had left, refusing to call off his dogs. While they stood or sat in the sun which was shining down on them in all its glory, their guards sat down in a makeshift tent, shielded from the scorching heat. They had also been properly fed by the caretaker who returned shortly after the landlord left with food and drinks for them. Deji had hoped they would fall asleep after their meal and they could find a way to steal the key and escape but no, the two men were wide awake and alert. “Look guys, we have to find the culprit!” Martins stated, already feeling the pangs of hunger. Communication was now done in hushed tones so as not to alert the guards to whatever plans they might come up with. “Do you guys want to stay here forever?” he asked Deji, Chris, Fidelis and Rotimi who formed an arc around him “Of course we don’t want to but how do we find out who started the fire?” Chris asked “Why do we need to find the person? Why can’t we just point fingers at someone?” “Rotimi!” Fidelis stated in disbelief and disapproval “Wetin?” Rotimi asked defensively. “You no wan go your shop go sell market abi you think say I no get things to do?!” “We can find the person!” Fidelis stated “How?” Rotimi asked his voice sarcastic. “How we wan take find the person? You be police? If you are waiting for someone to confess, O-Y-O o; on your own mehn! So if na me start the fire, you think say I go confess make Landlord kan kill me abi?” “But what you are suggesting is wrong!” Fidelis pointed out Rotimi twitched his nose at him as Deji spoke, his voice hushed. “Who do you think we should point at?” Fidelis stared at him in disbelief and his eyes widened in surprise when he realized the other guys are looking at their other house mates, trying to determine who they want to make the scapegoat. Baba Ruka sat on his generator, his two hands intertwined with his elbows resting on his lap while his wife sat down on the pavement beside him, her back turned to them. He was shaking his head at his wife as if he disagreed with something she said. Comfort and Temisan sat on the double steps that led into what used to be the passage of the house which was now an open wide space with rubbles, whispering to each other while Mama Nkiru sat on the ground, dozing off from time to time. “What are those two talking about,” Chris said, wondering out loud “Maybe they are planning to set one of you up as well,” Fidelis stated sarcastically. “I wonder who it will be!’ Deji glared at him as he addressed the others. “Ignore him and just focus. Who?” “Temisan!” Rotimi suggested “No! She will deny it!” Deji countered “Does it matter? It’s five against one!” He looked in Fidelis direction and muttered, “Well four” “I don’t think we should pick any of the trouble makers. I was thinking Comfort,” Deji said “Why?” Martins asked “She won’t have the strength to argue or deny it for long before she gives in and starts crying!” The four guys exchange a look “You have a point,” Martins agreed. Deji might be lazy about physical work but he was good at strategy “So how do we do this?” Chris wanted to know “Just follow my lead,” Deji stated “I can’t believe you guys are really going to do this!” Fidelis said, his voice incredulous “You better believe it and you are either with us or against us,” Rotimi fired back. “Maybe we should make him the culprit” Fidelis looked at each of them not doubting they could implicate him if they wanted to. It was their word against his and in a world where majority carries the vote even though the majority could be wrong, he didn’t stand a chance. He had to concede as they all stared at him, waiting for his response. “Okay fine!” They all turned back in Temisan’s direction only to see Mama Nkiru approaching the body guards. Everyone was staring at her, wondering what she was up to. “I wan go see my children,” she stated as she stared at the two body guards. “Dem go dey cry as dem no see me since. Na for Mama Victor house I keep them since midnight.” “Tell us who burn the house and I go allow you go,” one of the guards stated. She pointed at Temisan who quickly got to her feet. “No lie on top my head! Na you!” Temisan shouted, equally pointing an accusing finger at her “Na true!” Deji chipped in. Everyone looked at him in surprise, including Temisan. “Na Mama Nkiru start the fire!” “Hey! See lie! So you people want to lie on top my head. Never! Na you and Temisan plan this fire!” Deji looked at the other guys for support and Rotimi quickly spoke, corroborating Deji’s claim. “”Mama Nkiru, na you, No try to play wayo! Na you start the fire!” “All of una go burn for hell fire because all liars go to hell! Me wey dey sleep inside room jeje wey…”“Na me!” Mama Ruka’s voice boomed and they all turned to see Baba Ruka trying to make her shut up but she refused, freeing herself from his grasp. “Na me cause the fire!” They all stared at her, too dumbfounded to react!

EPISODE NINETEEN Martins stared warily at Ada who gave him a quizzical look, wondering why he still stood in her office. After Mama Ruka had confessed to the fact that she was the one who mistakenly left a lit candle on a plastic in the kitchen after she finished cooking, things had progressed. The landlord had been reluctant to release them after he was summoned by his guards, saying they were all somehow responsible and should pay for repairs but a unanimous front by all of them insisting they were not going to spend a dime for something they didn’t do left the man with no choice but to release them. Also, an angry display from a cranky and angry Mama Nkiru who was anxious to see her children helped him make up his mind fast. Everyone had picked what was left of their belongings and quickly exited the premises, leaving Baba Landlord with Mama Ruka and her husband who was livid she had confessed. Martins couldn’t blame the man. Knowing Baba Landlord, his wife’s confession meantgbesefor him. He was sure the landlord would make him pay through his nose and not consider the fact that the man had lost valuable things in the fire as well. A part of him was glad Mama Ruka confessed considering he had been willing to put the blame on someone innocent just to get on with his life but another part of him wondered if they could have outlasted the landlord and found a way to legally deal with him for taking matters into his hands without nailing anyone to the cross. Now he would never know, ashamed he had been willing to put Comfort in untold trouble. Apparently, his selfish gene was still present, he thought, his mind going to the reason he had a fall out with Aisha in school. He however consoled himself with the fact that every human being had a selfish gene. It was called survival instinct. Carrying a bag that contained most of his clothes and credentials, he informed Deji he had to get to the office even though there were a few hours left to the close of business. “Just call Aisha and explain things to her instead of going all the way to the office again,” Deji said, retrieving his phone from his pocket and offering him. “Aisha doesn’t work in my office.” Deji gave him a puzzled look. “If she doesn’t work in your office, why did you call her the other time?” “She… errmmm… she has my boss’ number,” Martins supplied, suddenly feeling foolish for calling Aisha and uncomfortable under his friend’s scrutiny. “Then call her again and ask her to give you your boss’ number,” Deji finally said, filling in the heavy silence that settled between them “I’d just rather go to the office and see her myself!” “What are you hiding?” “What’s that supposed to mean?” Martins asked, his tone defensive “You didn’t tell me about Aisha and now all these drama. What’s going on?” “Nothing! And I didn’t purposely hide Aisha from you. It’s not like you are always around for me to chit-chat with,” he stated, his tone turning sarcastic “Okay,” Deji said, lifting his hands in a gesture to show he’s not interested in arguing. ”Okay, let’s go!” “To where?” Martins asked, his voice, a mixture of alarm and puzzlement “Your office!” Deji responded. “You said you want to go to your office, let’s go!” “Why do you want to go with me? Just give me the address of where you’re going to be and I’ll see you there” “What’s wrong if I go with you?” “Nothing!” “Then I’m coming with you!” Deji stated with a tone of finality and began to walk away. Martins stared at his back, not moving. Deji stopped and glanced back at him. “Right now, I’m the one with the money,” he stated and Martins sighed, having no choice than to follow him and so they had arrived at Realty Point. Martins had quickly rushed in to see Ada, earning curious glances from his colleagues. Ada had listened to his story without a word and when he was finally through, had just asked him to go. As he stood in her office staring at her, he didn’t know whether to be relieved she asked him to go because he needed to rest. Lethargy was already setting in and he knew he couldn’t function optimally if she asked him to stay in the office but the fact that she didn’t ask him to stay, didn’t say more than just “Okay, go” made him wary. Martins feared he might have lost his job since she looked unsympathetic as he narrated his plight. “Is there anything else?” Ada asked as she stared at him, a puzzled expression on her face. Martins shook his head. “Then leave!” She turned her attention to what she was doing before he walked in, apparently dismissing him “Do I still have my job?” Ada raised her head to look at him as Martins held his breath. With the woman, he just could never tell what she was thinking.

EPISODE TWENTY Martins was pleasantly surprised. He had seen Ada excited, upset and exasperated but he had never seen her laugh before. She laughed now, amused at the question but more at the pathetic look on Martins face and Martins enjoyed the sight. The woman should laugh more often. It made her look very pretty. “Martins, go home, I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said, a smile still lingering on her face as she shook her head and turned her attention back to what she was doing. “That means I still have my job?” Martins asked, refusing to assume anything. He wanted to hear the woman say it. “That goes without saying,” she said glancing at him. Realizing Martins would not move until she expressly told him he wasn’t jobless, she obliged. “Yes you still have your job. Will you leave my office now?” “Thank you,” Martins muttered and turned to leave. He was about to close the door when Ada spoke again. “And Martins, get a phone. This is the 21stcentury for goodness sakes! You didn’t have to come all the way down here. A phone call would have sufficed.” Martins managed to look embarrassed as he quickly closed the door behind him. A phone was the first thing he was going to get when he got his salary which he was highly anticipating and looking forward to. With the deal he closed on Aisha’s boss, he hoped Ada would be generous to share some of the commission with him. He smiled in excitement at the thought and began to mentally think of the kind of phone he would get. It definitely wasn’t going to be China and hopefully there would be no Mama Ruka where they were going to smash his phone. The thought of Mama Ruka brought a series of thoughts to his mind: the trauma he had faced overnight, the fact that Deji was waiting for him in reception and the anxiety of how Stella was going to react when she found out she was not only going to be sheltering Deji permanently but also him. He hoped his wasn’t going to be as permanent as Deji’s. If it were not for a few debts he owed here and there, he would have been able to afford another face-me-I-slap you apartment but after everything he went through at his previous place, he thought it better to squat until he was able to afford the kind of place he wanted. He just hoped Stella would be as accommodating as Deji believed. He had told him to call and prepare her for their arrival but Deji didn’t think it was necessary. He quickly made his way to reception and saw Deji leaning casually on the desk, chatting airily with the receptionist as if he didn’t have any care in the world. “…think I should buy the one at Roseberry Estate Ibeju Lekki?” “Hun-hun!” she said, beaming at him “What’s going on?” Martins asked as he walked to the reception area “The lady thinks I should cash in on one of your properties and I’m considering it.” Martins chuckled in mockery knowing his friend couldn’t afford the property. “Please let’s go!” “Why are you laughing? You don’t think I can afford it?” Deji asked, his look challenging “Deji I’m tired. Can we just go please?!” “I hope you get the commission when I buy the land,” Deji said, smiling at the receptionist who returned the smile as they walked out. “So what did your boss say?” Deji asked as they made their way out of the compound “I still have my job… and she told me to get a phone,” Martins added with a hint of a smile. “Have you called Stella?” “Stop worrying about Stella!” “Well I do worry! We can’t just show up at her doorstep without giving her prior notice!” “Will you please leave me to worry about that?!” Deji answered curtly, silencing Martins. Both men were quiet the rest of the way and when they alighted from the bus and turned into a street, Martins wanted to ask if Stella was making so much from her hair salon business for her to be able to afford a house in an area as this. It wasn’t that the area was so civilized but it wasn’t as rugged as where they just moved from. It was clean, decent and not as rowdy. He had only met the lady a few times and had just assumed she was a low class semi-literate who wasn’t worth his attention and whom his friend used as a means to an end. Now his assessment of the lady was beginning to change. His respect for her grew more when they entered a very neat compound. If there were people at home, he didn’t know since the house was built in flats rather than the face-me-I-slap-you they were once living. He looked around in awe impressed with his surroundings as he followed Deji into the building. When Deji walked to a door and reached for the key somewhere Martins didn’t know since he wasn’t paying attention, he couldn’t help but ask, “How much is this babe making that she can afford a place like this?” By this time, Deji had opened the door and walked in. Martins followed. “Wow!” he exclaimed as he saw the modest but nicely furnished living room. “No wonder you don’t come home. I didn’t know the salon business made good profits.” Deji chuckled as he stared at Martins. “Actually, this is not Stella’s place, it’s mine!” Martins stared open-mouthed at his friend, refusing to believe what he just heard. *************************************** ***************************** Well, it appears Oga Martins would be getting set for a new lease of life in Deji’s apartment, which had been hidden all the while.
