On this day 28th July,1966(50years back),the first military Governor of the defunct Western Region,Lt-Col Adekunle Fajuyi was kidnapped lately at night alongside the Head of State,Major Gen Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi by Soldiers from Nothern extraction,and were killed on the 29th of July,1966.Fajuyi hosted Aguiyi who arrived Ibadan on July 28,1966 to address a conference of traditional rulers of Western Nigeria in Ibadan.Having concluded his mission at Ibadan that evening,his host(Fajuyi) convinced him to spend the night with him at Government House,Ibadan.The coup plotters which includes Aguiyi's allies from Nothern extraction traced him to Government House,Ibadan.The Coup plotters never set out to kill Adekunle Fajuyi;their main objective was to abduct Aguiyi Ironsi,but Fajuyi refused to hand over Aguiyi whom he respects so much,and insisted on dying along with his friend and Boss.What a brave and fearless Ekiti man in Fajuyi.They storyline is too lengthy,but they were eventually abducted on this day and killed the following day,29th July,1966.The main cause/history of Nigeria Civil war of 1967-1970 started with this ugly event.Because after the killing of Aguiyi by conspired Notherners,they pushed in their brother Yakubu Gowon who was a junior officer to Odumegwu Ojukwu.Ojukwu,an Oxford graduate and senior officer to Gowon saw both the killing of Aguiyi and placement of Gowon as injustice,and started struggling it out with Gowon using several disorderly means....The Abokis started tormenting and humiliating us from abonitio...Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi emerged as the Head of State on January 15th,1966 and was killed on July 29th,1966.He ruled for 6months....Rest on gallant soldiers,Aguiyi Ironsi(Head of State) and Adekunle Fajuyi(Governor of the defunct Western Region).
