.......................... Chapter 9................................
I found Meredith the next morning lounging in her quarters. She barely glanced up. "I'm sorry about what happened last night, Alise," she mumbled softly. I smiled quickly when she looked back up. "It's fine, I know you were just trying to help me," I said. She nodded in what I hoped was understanding. I really needed to know what she was up to. As much as I wanted to tear her to pieces with shards of ice, I couldn't. The thought of it brought me comfort through the betrayal. My hand twitched slightly and Meredith shifted uncomfortably. "I feel a bit strange," Meredith muttered rubbing her arms. I forced my hands to relax. At least I'd gotten to freeze some of her before making it melt. She stood and came closer. "Are you alright?" "Yeah, I'm just trying to figure out what to do about Ana," I half-lied. I was in a way. Just not the way Meredith thought. She nodded yet again understanding. I heaved a heavy sigh and dropped down onto her bed. "Everything is so confusing right now." "I know, after winter has passed it will be easier to figure things out," my best friend reasoned. Meredith sounded so much like herself and not the evil person she really was. Such a heartless thing to do, befriending a queen that has no one. I pushed myself off of her bed in standing position so I could face her fully. "We will figure things out and people, too," I muttered, hoping she could hear the double meaning in my voice. Something flickered in Meredith's eyes. Confusion? Probably just what I wanted to see. An innocence to redeem my traitor best friend. She smiled and placed her hand on my arm. "Together we will," she exclaimed happily as if glad of our friendship. I did not respond, but instead backed away from her offering of joy. "Um yes, together. For now, though, I have matters to attend to," I stated, trying to sound more like a queen than a friend. I wiped expression off of my face to be the last thing she saw before I left. My cold exterior threw Meredith off. She swallowed uncertainly and sat back down onto her bed gently. "Alright..." she said quietly. I did my best to walk out of the room with my head held high, but couldn't help but let it hang a little in my upset. Ema caught my eye as I retreated. She stood down the hall from Meredith's door. The woman nodded curtly, trying to empower me. Trying to tell me that I am not wrong this. I forced a smile in her direction, but passed by her without saying a word. The further I walked, the darker my mood became. Soon enough I was trudging down the hall with my head hanging low in defeat. Ana wanted to hurt me, well now she has. Two servants rushed past me. I let them pass with a deep sigh. "Excuse us," one of them said politely as she passed. My head shot up in recognition. I spun around. "Halt!" I ordered their retreating figures. They continued on as if they had not heard me. I lifted my hand and partially froze their blood for a quick second to stop their motion. The two women fell forward in surprise. "I'm very sorry for that." I hurried to their aid, holding my hands out to help them up. They both stared up at me hesitantly. The first one took my hand and grunted as I pulled her up. "Very lovely to see you again Charlotte," I said to the one I recognized. Charlotte stared at my hand, but finally allowed me to help her up. "Did you need something, your highness?" she asked, trying to hold her servant status. I smirked at her attempt knowingly. "You did not obey me when I offered my hand," I said through my small smile. Charlotte wrung her hands together nervously. "I'm sorry, Queen Wynter," she mumbled. Her eyes darted to her equally as nervous companion. My small smile broke into a full on grin, feeling a bit relieved. "Don't be sorry. I'm sorry for what Ana had done to you," I hugged her. Charlotte stiffened in surprise. "Um." "You can speak for yourself and for that, I am glad," I breathed, pulling back. "Who are you?" "Belle," Charlotte's companion told me softly. I smiled at both of them. "Belle, Charlotte, I must speak with both of you in private," I looked around for Meredith or Ema's prying eyes. They exchanged a glance, but followed me as I left. The throne room was free of both people I wanted to be away from. I sealed the door with a little magick and turned to the girls excitedly. "You both see things around the kingdom that escape my eyes." "I-I guess a few things," Charlotte stuttered. I took my place on the throne. "Have you seen any suspicious activity from a servant named Meredith?" I asked in a hushed voice. Charlotte shrugged. "Nothing out of the ordinary. Unless you count her dresses and perky attitude suspicious," she muttered. "Well..." Belle began uncertainly. "Yes?" "Sometime yesterday, she did something strange," she continued,"She hurried past me, nearly knocked me over, I heard something like sliding on the wall like she was sliding her fingers on the wall as she walked, but when I turned around she was not there. As if she'd just disappeared." Meredith had attempted to go to the all seeing room. She'd known about it. My temporary joy broke and my smile became a frown yet again. So she was up to something. "What's this about?" Charlotte asked. My eyes flickered back to her. "Report to me next time you see suspicious activity from Meredith or a new servant named Ema," I ordered. "Dismissed." Belle fled the room, but Charlotte stayed where she was. She stepped to my throne, looking at me with concern. "Wynter, all of us servants greatly appreciate you. We do not blame you for us being put here. You treat us better than we would be treated back home and you have saved us from starvation," she told me. My face twisted in surprise. "You do? I did?" I wondered. None of them had ever told them what they were thinking, even so appreciation was far from what I expected. She nodded. "A few of us servants can see what's happening," she informed me. "You were happy for months, then something happened. We don't know what, but you've been even more distant than you were before Meredith came." I didn't reply. I just stared up at her piercing green eyes in wonder. "Now tell me, what is wrong," Charlotte asked kindly. I gulped and looked away. "Meredith is working for Ana to destroy the kingdom for good." the words came out in a jumbled rush as if I'd been dying to get them out since I was told. Charlotte's eyebrows furrowed as she tried to understand what I'd just said. "What? She seemed so sincere." "Exactly," I whispered, avoiding her eyes. "Hey, at least she's not the only one you can talk to anymore," Charlotte smiled hopefully at me. I knew what she meant and I was grateful for it. "Thank you so much." My Queen Wynter exterior broke away as I stood to hug her. For a moment, I could be Alise again. For the next hour, I told her the whole story of what happened. Occasionally, she'd provide her opinion on it or throw in a question. A weight lifted off of my shoulder. A knock on the door brought me to silence. Charlotte and I stood from our places in the middle of the floor. She hurried up the steps to the throne and pretended she was doing some cleaning on it. I flickered my fingers, swinging the door open. Meredith gave a quick wave and stepped in. "I haven't seen you around the kingdom for a few hours so I thought I'd fetch you," she told me, tugging on a strand of brown hair. "Let's go," I said, taking her elbow and leading her away. I turned to close the doors. Charlotte met my eyes. Good luck, she mouthed. I smiled and shut the doors.
