PREFACE

A book written with a deep thought for our founding fathers and our beloved brothers and sisters who were sold during the slave trade era. Those who never returned home and those who were drowned, those who died fighting to gain freedom and who were beheaded for treason just because they never did support a tyrant who uses his power and influence to abuse their rights and freedom.
To all my African brothers and sisters, lets always note the great deeds our past heroes did for us and we should all learn to live in peace, love and harmony and avoid betraying each other's trust.

APPRECIATION

I appreciate the Almighty God for his profound talents deposited in me. For helping me to realise and appreciate his gift and his endless grace upon my life.
I also thank my beloved teacher who laid the bedrock of writting in me and also assisting me to realise my talents. , Late. Sir. Isaac Idawari Odigi {my mentor at the ST. JOSEPH'S STATE SCHOOL, ABONNEMA, RIVERS STATE ,NIGERIA.} for your advice and care in my basic 6 , a time when i was indeed facing hard battles {crossing over to my teenage years} i am indeed indepted to you and am also planning of writting a book in your memory.
And my class/schoolmate who always encourage me, notably, koton Kobum Offor and my hardworking english teacher. Love you all.

DEDICATION

This book/literature is dedicated to all lovers of freedom.

EPISODE 1 I was born and raised in the kingdom of Agufia in the Niger delta sub-region. As a boy, i played round my mum's hut, my elder siblings and i always stay near home because rumoure was spreading that slave merchants were now in our kingdom territory to capture young people for their dirty business called slave trading. Women were afraid to go to farm, children afraid to go out and it was only the bravest hunters whe dares to go hunting and they ofcourse go in numbers of dive to ten especially inc the night period of hunting expectation. Soon, food shortage became a common phenomenon and for scarcity did follow suit but food crops were on people's farms , but due to the fear of being captured, no one dare venture out into their farmlands. One day, the king summoned a meeting of all the communities in the kingdom for a talk on how to tackle and solve the prevailing problems and disasters from the slave merchants. "my people......" the king began "......the toad does does not run in a broad day light in vain, we all are aware of the problems that are threatening our existence as a people and kingdom as a whole, we are known to be great farmers, hunters, fishermen, midwives and above all great warriors. The kingdom of Agufia is known to be among the strongest kingdoms, why must we let a common problem to terminate us?" "igwe, you have spoken well....." it was chief Oni of the Agah clan who spoke up "........it is procrastination that makes the razor fish to decompose in a basket, why must we run away from a common problem?" chief Oni further added "igwe.....may you live long, these slave merchants are like testse fly on a man's scrotum, if let alone , it suck it killing the man slowly, if approach with force it might burst the scrotum , so in such situation, a careful approach is needed, why don't we choose a notable number of warriors to protect this kingdom and the rest to carry out the daily activities so as to ensure enough production of food crops?" chief Agwanfi of Agufia clan pointed out. EPISODE 2 Agufia is my clan, the name of the kingdom was named after one of the sons of Onima, one of the founders of our kingdom. Agufia was a great warrior who led Angala kingdom, as it was known then, into many victories. After his death, the king honoured his memory by renaming the kingdom after him and since then, the kingdom has been known as Agufia kingdom. The chief of the warriors of the kingdom were always choosen from among the bravest of the warriors in Agufia clan. Because Agufia's clan were the descendants of the great warrior Agufia. Agufia's clan was a "warrior barracks " because they ultilize and stored the weapons of the kingdom in their clan arsenal hall. And their territory was strongely secured because it was fenced round with red stronge bamboo rods with raffia palm frogs that it was hard for the outside clans to notice or see any of their activities. About fifty percent of Agufia's kingdom warriors were from Agufia clan. The five clans that made up Agufia kingdom are the Agah clan, Agufia clan, Akan clan, Boroni clan and the Ukwa. Respectively, each of these clans also have its own sub clans in it. At the age of eight, a male of the Agufia clan starts training as a warrior and at the age of fifteen, if is initiated into the warriors society thereby making him a full warrior, if the individual wishes to be a warrior, but if not , if is allowed to lite a normal life. EPISODE 3 The kingdom guards was dominated by the Akan clan and they also produce the chief of the kingdom guards. As a matter of fact, they occupy seventy percent of the guard's population. The chief priesthood fell to the Agah clan, the herbalist/mid-wives functions fell to the Ukwa clan while the kingship fell to the Boroni clan. Although Agufia clan members were warriors, they still occupy the highest population in the kingdom. As a matter of fact, they alone occupies fifty percent of the total population in the kingdom followed by the Akan clan who made up twenty-five percent , while the Agah, Ukwa and the Boroni clans respectively made up the remaining twenty-five percent. The kingdom of Agufia was among the ten most populated kingdom in their known world. ______________________________ /\ /\ /\ \/ \/ \/ ______________________________ /\ /\ /\ \/ \/ \/ ______________________________ At the end of the meeting, it was decided to engage the kingdom guards and that each guard post/check point should have a minimum of ten guards. Immediately, the chief of guards commenced with the posting of guards to all parts of the kingdom where they were lacking and only a few post were set up nearer to to Agufia clan because here was considered a "warriors barracks". After the deployment of guards, security soon return to the kingdom and the people now felt they were safe and resumed their daily routine. TBC

EPISODE 4 THE RAID Few weeks later, a horrorfying news rang into the kingdom that two check points were attacked and the ones that were stationed near the kingdom waterine boundaries were destroyed and the guards either killed or captured. The king hosted a meeting with the chief guard who later in colleboration with the king ordered for reinforcement to the attacked posts and to increase the numbers of guards per outpost. A heavy resistance was encountered while trying to recapture back those captured areas from the slave merchants, most of the guards were either killed or injured and the surviving ones fled for their dear lives. Soon water scarcity was now becoming a common phenomenon, as a result of this, the king ordered for the withdrawal of the guards and ordered that the warriors should engage. An internal was broke out as the warriors raided the slave merchants camp causing heavy casualty to the slave merchants. Another attack was hosted by the warriors which broke out into a bitter bloody battle as the warriors battled the slave merchants and despites that the slave merchants have sophisticated weapons, {as a result of the nature of their trade with the europeans} the battle did lasted long enough with both sides suffering heavy casualties. During the this period, captured weapons of the slave merchants were used, crude and nomadic weapons were also use. As long as it could help them to drive away those beasts {as the slave merchants were often addressed} from their lands.

EPISODE 5 Soon, most territory captured and taken by the slave merchants were being recaptured back one after the other, but as a result of fear, people fled their homes to the innermost parts of the kingdom where they felt more safe and secured. One cold faithful night, i heard someone screaming and i immediately came out to see what was going on, and behold my clan was under attack. "quickly this way" i heard someone whispered into my ears, and immediately i turn round only to see my elder brother Agufia standing behind me. @@@@@@@@@@@@ My elder brother Agufia was named after our legendary ancestor Agufia, he's the second son and my immediate elder sibling. Our most eldest is a girl named Udochi followed by the second child but first son named Agumbe, Agufia came next before me and finally our last born who's name is Mzu because of her clay like coloured skin. @@@@@@@@@@@@ Immediately, i followed him with haste down the hilly parts into a safe zone. During the commotion, we lost contacts with most of our family members, so we sticked together. We both ran into a deserted place near the communal market place where we both spent the night till twilight before we started back to our home to see if everywhere was again calm. Moving at about a good distance, we heard someone calling our names, we turned back only to see that it was our uncle madueke . @@@@@@@@@@@@ Although madueke is the elder brother of my father, he also possess numerous lands and farms from their father {my grand father} as the custom of the land demanded. But he was not satisfy with his lot. He also did want the possession of his younger brother who is my father. This created a bad blood between the both of them. The death of my father took place place a week after an encounter with madueke, it was rumoured that madueke was responsible for his death but i dismissed it as a mere coincidence. After the death of my father, madueke wanted to take over my father's estate but was repelled by Agumbe who two week after the encounter went missing and was never found again. Madueke even shot his first son Akuri who openly told him about his wicked act and that he {Akuri} would never have anything to do with him {madueke} again. Madueke was so provoked that he drew out his hunting gun {me i don't even know how he came about with the gun, only the gods and him knows, but what i knew was that i heard uncle madueke has bought a new hunting gun} and shot at the poor innocent young young man thereby wasting his life in the process. Madueke was said to be rumorseful after the incidence, since then, his hatred for me and my siblings has increased tenfold cause he considered us the ones who made his son to defile his authority. But now in this situation, madueke seems to have changed {only the gods knows what he's upto}. @@@@@@@@@@@@ TBC.

EPISODE 6 THE BETRAYAL ____________________ "I am glad to see the both of you, am happy that you both made it this far" Agufia was speechless, he couldn't say a word cause it was suprising that our great enemy has turn friend over night "now stop wondering cause this's not the right time to discuss, we'll talk about it when the right time comes" He further added. We both followed him silently like zombies "please lets move fast for the road is not safe at night and we got a long way to cover" He further adviced but suprisingly, our rout took us from the paths into the bush leading to the river. Just then, Agufia spoke out "uncle Madueke, this is not the path that leads to the clan, why are we following here?" Madueke simply smiled and pointed ahead of us "you see that?" ofcourse we could see a place that looks like the slave merchants hideout, so we silently followed him , as long as he can lead us out of danger . We soon broke into a race , we ran amock like deers down the paths and crossed into the evil forest paths, for that was the shortest path to the river, not minding, we were ready to take chances with the ghosts or we'll become ghosts ourselves. We later ran into Maduka and Eslem. ___________________ Maduka and Eslem are brother and sister , both of different mothers but same father. Their father is a polygamist who married two wives. They are from the Akan Clan , Maduka and Agufia are agemates, while his younger sister and i are agemates also. ____________________ "did you guys see them?" Maduka managed to ask us amid panting and gasping for breath "yes" Agufia replied him "come on lets go to the river side and join others their, we'll be safe there." Uncle Madueke interrupted into our conversation and we all trooped after him like dummies, what today i regretted doing, i always wish i've never listened to uncle madueke, if only i've never followed him, i wouldn't have pass through all these predicaments that am passing through. On getting to the river side, we saw young men , women and children sitting down on the bare ground, at first i thought that i've met my people, but later , it now dawn on us that our uncle is a traitor. He sold the four of us for twenty pounds coupled with two guns and gun powder. . . . . . TBC

EPISODE 7 THE VOYAGE Early the next morning , we were led on a straight line/file into a ship hidden by the harbour. With heavy chains on our hands and legs, it was a hell and it was slow as most of the slaves were moving rapidly. The slave merchants started flogging and this was very terrible, soon , we all manage to walk into the ship.we were all kept in a dark room deprived of light apart from the candle light which i later learnt to be chandelier. We sat down in chains and the weight of it made life a living hell. Soon a lady in a gown came in with a big basket on her head and started distributing food. When it got to my turn, i noticed that it was corn and water. Each slave got two corn and a little water. It was this awful thing that we ate for the number of weeks we spent on the open sea and it was once in a day. We often spend most of our time sleeping or talking in a wisper. I actually don't know the number of weeks we spent at sea cause We were never allowed to go out of the devilish room except when we want to use the toilet. One faithful day, {or so i thought} we were all fast asleep when the door burst open and the rays of a bright afternoon light flashes all over the dark room. We were all told to come out of the room, this we did with difficulties and later we were all aboard the ship. The smell of unwashed bodies floated all over the environment and i later realised that we were the ones smelling due to the number of weeks we have spent without taking our bath. Later, me, Eslem, Agufia and Maduka were sold to a white man named Clifford. We were later burnt on our arms with a fiery hot iron rod. I later discovered that the iron left a mark on our arms. One part of the mark showed the sign of slavery while the other showed the letter "C" , as i later came to learn about it, i discovered that it was the mark of our master' i.e our master's ownership symbol. Clifford has bought the four me us at the same time pointing out that he didn't want to scatter the family. At the age of twelve, i later came to understand who and what i really was, oh....! It pains me, i was thousand miles away from home, my home lies across the open sea {ocean}. My mother and sisters all ran through my mind. My family in africa and am here in this God curse continent called north america with its harsh cold weather.........mummy where are you? Please come and rescue me!!! . . . . . TBC

EPISODE 8 THE REBIRTH BY NAME . . . At the virginia plantation, we grew mainly tobacco crops for our master. {these tobacco was was later export to french men}. We work and toiled from morning till night. And the only payment we recieved were two miserable square meal a day and if you're unlucky, you'll get five wipes on you bare back. I can vividly recall one evening when we were working , i was so dehydrated that i couldn't work again , one white man walked up to me and said "you fucking ass-hole , c'on get rup and wark!!" i only moan and looked at him for help but what i recieved was a wipe and started screaming in agony. Just then Agufia appeared from no where in particular and pushed the white man down "how dare you bastard wipe him like that? Is he your cow?" by now, every body was staring at the slave who was challanging a white man. {in their minds, "hanging things on point" cause that was the penalty }. Even the family of mr. Cliff were all watching , mr. Cliff shouted but it was in-audible. The white man jump up and striked Agufia twice and a serious fight ensued between the both of them. Although the white man was older than Agufia, Agufia did gave him the beating of his life. Mr. Clifford started clapping and went down straight to where the fight took place. On reaching , he gave the white man a thunderous slap {for betraying the white man's superimacy} then turn to Agufia "young man, whats your name?" shakingly, "Agufia sir" "i think Boris will be suitable for you, as from today upwards, your name shall be called Boris ". Mr. Clifford finally declared and walk off. I was in amazement as to how a slave master could change the name of his slaves at will. _____________________ AT THE VERY FIRST WEEK OF OUR ARRIVAL TO THE MASTER'S PLANTAINTION, ALL THE SLAVES WERE GIVEN NEW NAMES, I WAS RENAMED MORRIS DUE TO MY NEUTRALITY IN SITING ANY OF THE PARTIES AND AGAIN I NEVER DID SUPPORT ANY UNJUST AND UNFAIR ACT, I WAS NICK NAMED SAINT MORRIS . MADUKA WAS RENAMED BLACK-DUKE BECAUSE OF HIS EXTRA DARK SKIN. HE WAS VERY DARK IN COMPLEXION THAN THE REST OF THE BLACKS FOUND THERE. SOME PEOPLE THOUGHT THAT HE WAS BORN ON A BLACK RIVER, HENCE THE NAME. ESLEM WAS RENAMED DORIS. IT WAS ONLY AGUFIA THAT WASN'T GIVEN ANY NAME TILL NOW BUT THE NAME BORIS? WHAT ON EARTH DOES IT MEAN? EPISODE 9A "Now all of you back to work!" was the next order we got and with haste we resumed work. That day , we were lucky to be relieved early as though we have won our freedom. But most older slaves among us kept on murmuring curse on their betrayers . I just sat down and flash back on how i got here. Just then, i was brought back to reality by a female voice. I turn round to look only to notice that my fellow slave, a girl younger than me by two years was already seated beside me and was beaming with a smile. I twist my face, to show disguist. "hey, how are you doing?" she manage to ask me "i'm doing okay but not as myself" i replied her "i know" she replied then continued "i've been here for ten years now. I was brought here at the age of eight. Sold by my elder sister . I was born and raised in a royal family where life wasn't so hard, but due to jealousy my elder sister role me" . . . TBC

EPISODE 9B i look at her with a pitiful look , then started wondering how i would have felt if i were in her shoes, if Agufia was the one that sold me into slavery how would i have felt about him and the great impact of feeling betrayed by your blood relative. I was lucky that i have a nice elder brother but uncle madueke! How i wish i had known. I turned and saw that she didn't feel the same way that i felt, it made me relax my mind a little. Then i proceeded to ask her why she was so calm, her response sent cold shiver down my spine "are you telling me that this is our home?" i manage to ask her amid doubt "i bet" she replied sharply and added "there is no way you'll ever get away from here except you are ready to commit suicide , because ocean water surrounds this continent and to cross, you'll need a ship" "how did you manage to know that?" i asked her knavely "see here" she brought out a meat folded paper from inner breast pocket of her "mama africa look at us" . . . . EPISODE 10 _______=====________ ===== The clothes we dressed in were rags barely to cover us from the damn-ing prevailing cold climate and the clothing rag was what the jews used to put on when they are mourning. This was sackclothe but we renamed it "mama africa look at us" because of the miserable nature of the worthless rag. _______======_______ ====== Pointing down her beautiful fingers to teach me map reading, "morris, you see that upwards you go to canada, then downwards you go to mexico and if you continue, you go south america and i bet your journey will end their, here is virginia , this is where we are now " {indicating on the map} i was perplex at her skill at map reading and confused at the same time so i asked her to clerify me "why is it not possible to run from america to africa? But europeans sometimes uses camel to pass through asia and then into africa, why can't we do the same here in america?" "you this silly boy, do you want to become Jesus Christ the second?" i was heating up gradually cause she was abusing me with styles, but on seeing my mood, she went the long way to explain things better. "look," she pointed out on the african section of the map "lets assume you are coming from europe to africa on land, you'll pass through here , then into syria , then lebanon , israel down to egypt by crossing this desert like area called sinai, then you pass into libya then start descending down the continent, you pass through sahara desert then you are going home!" she finally exclaim "wow that was fantastic!!" i exclaim happily "but you will also encounter some little bodies of water you know, but here in america, take a look around , its all surrounded by big! big!! big!!! Oceans and the place that the ocean seems to be narrower is at the polar region, you will die there" "why?" i managed to ask amid confusion "ice cold" "ouch!" i belched "morris so you see??" "yea, so whats your name?" i managed to ask her "eno-bong, eno for short, master's name is catherine" she replied giving me that i love you look . . . . . TBC

EPISODE 11 Early the next morning, i was startled from sleep by what seems to be a yell or wailing only God in heaven could tell . We all rushed out to see what was happening and to my greatest suprise, it was an elder female slave wailing. When it was enquired the reason for her disturbance, it was found out that her husband had died that night, it was further revealed that he was murdered in cold blood. His body was found under a plantain stern lying helplessly and hopelessly in his pool of blood. Later that day, an investigation was done, only to fine out that it was one of the white men that killed him, but the reasons were unknown , nothing was done to the murderer, "slave is slave , a slave's life is useless" that was all that was said "slave go slave come" later became the new slogan of the slave masters. . . . . I was playing with my mind in the evening when i heard someone calling me, it startled me and brought me back to reality , i opened my eyes fully only to discover my brother standing beside me. "hmmm Boris" i managed to murmur his name "what the hell does that name stand for or what is the meaning ?" i asked him more curiously than a question. "boy, go and ask mr cliff what the name means" he managed to reply amid laughter. "i can see that you are answering a name which you your self don't even know its meaning or interpretation , what a shame!" i replied scolding him. We were still talking when catherine came in "hello boys" she greeted while Boris jaw dropped open. TBC

Episode 12 I just use the back of my palm to push up Boris jaw. To avoid flies you know. "how are you doing today morris?" she ask me with a smile "i am fine and you?" i managed to ask her "fine also, thanks for asking" {to Boris} "good day sir" but Boris only stared like he was in a trance "hey mr blockhead" i called and nudge him at the same time to bring him back to reality. "eh...eh...em...em...you said what?" He replied amid confusion "look at this bushman o" i teased him {doing the introduction} "catherine , this is my elder brother Boris and Boris this is my beloved Catherine" {i notice a foolish grim on Boris face but i ignore it} i introduce them, they both acknowladge each with a one and finally shook hands. "okay mr morris the saint of virginia , you didn't tell me that you have found a......." {he winks at me} "Boris, you're indeed very mad" i fired back at him jokingly "hehe...you guys are very funny" catherine manage to comment amid laughter "catherine can you help us?" i pleaded with her "what can a slave girl do to help you?" she manage to ask amid a low self esteem "common my dear, don't degrade yourself, you are worth dying for, a man can lay down his life for you, e.g Boris" Boris replied her with concern in his voice "hehe...boris you think your brother will ever agree to die for me?" She manage to ask him amid laughter "okay ask him, thank God he is here" Boris replied pointing to me she just look at me with a funny face and ask "MORRIS what do you have to say for yourself?" "no ooo...i wouldn't...am not ready to die cause am too young to die" Everybody just burst out laughing "so what was that...you guys wanted me to help you with? Is it food or...?" Catherine later ask after the laughter subsides. "no catherine, i just wanted to ask you if you know the meaning of the name Boris" i replied her with curiousivy in my voice "haha...that?, Boris simply means fighter" she replied with all seriousness. Immediately Boris heard it, he instantly collapse to the ground and fainted TBC De-Thompson's literal collection (C) 2016

Episode 13 I thought it was a joke but a careful look shows it was seriouse, i was alarmed and when i look at him seriously i noticed that he has really fainted. We ran helter skelter searching for any emergency stuff but nothing was found, we continue searching untill catherine brought water which i baptized him with. Immediately he jump up laughing. "see yourselves, you think that i will faint just because of an ordinary name?" he asked us amid laughter "you are mad indeed" i spat out angrily "never you do that again, cause even if its real i might take it as a joke" he replied rumoursefully "but Boris what made you do that?" catherine manage to ask amid laughter "hmmmm....the name sounds funny, useless and meaningless at the same time, how can someone brag by answering the name fighter? Haha these white men are very funny" "boris you are very correct and right at the same time" catherine cuts in "i hate them with passion" boris barked in "its not their fault, you see they take us blacks as babaric uncivilize primitive bush men because of our dark colour , but why then do they have to bring us to their land to till the soil for them with nothing in return than insults and bullying." i manage to contribute to the discussion amid thoughts "come on lets go and get some sleep , you know that tomorow is a hectic day and we should try to save some energy. To do that we must have enough rest." boris adviced and we all dispersed to our respective shacks to spend the night....... As soon as we got into the men's shack, boris just turn face me and ask "so boy you have found a damsel and have kept it away from me all these whiles?" "hmmm boris says who? Who told you that i didn't want to tell you?" "then what were you waiting for?" he asked with an evil smile "waiting for the right time after the relationship get stronger" i replied him honestly he simply nod and replied "okay boy, i understand your point , don't worry time will tell, so lets try get some sleep" . . . . . |\/|£RR¥ ___X|\/|@$ . . . SEASON FINALE The next day was very dull and the weather itself was no different, but suprisingly enough, no white man did cane any black throughout the whole day and it was like a miracle or what, but what remindes us that we were still slaves were the rags we put on as clothes. We went about our normall routine without coarsion or bullying, we laboured and when we get tired we took some rest, no one even dare to flog or force us to work. I was very suprise and at the same time happy at this turn of event. It was later in the day that i discovered that mr. Cliff's wife had yelled the ghost the previouse night and mr. Cliff was mourning his late wife. I was like a "hmmmmm", so the almighty cliff himself is sorrowing? The one and only cliff in southern virginia crying? Even when his own mother died his face was firm as a rock, same goes with his father's dismiss also. And when his first son was killed by a black slave under the authority of another slave master , he never did blink a tear from his eyes, rather he swore to avenge his son's death. But his son was a devil though cause almost everybody hated him because of his arrogant lifestyle so i guess he deserved what he got. But why was he now crying for a woman? Though his wife, why was he shedding tears? But the woman was already age and also did passed away peacefully in her sleep, i was so engrossed in thoughts when someone tapped me on my shoulder, i turned to see boris standing with his hands akimbo and smiling at the same time. "bro i will be observing who mr. Cli will revenge on today" boris said with a broad knowing smile I was not suprised by what he just called mr clifford the slave don. Since the day that boris found out the meaning of his name "{artificial name}" as he use to call it, he has also given a nick name to mr. Clifford. He now calls him mr cli or clipper , it was a very rediculous nickname though. "come on little dude , lets not keep your beautiful banny waiting" boris cut me short of my thoughts , i was not suprise that he was already mimicking the white men's english. "whats a banny? I managed to ask him amid confusion. "hot woman, young lady or damsel you dummy" he replied me "ok sir, so what the message?" he just laugh before answering me "haha, your woman, lady catherine is waiting for you outside , you'll find her under those trees there" he pointed out. As i was about to go out he shouted "don't spoil the show!!!" i was like a "what show? , but just walk out , who knows if i might live to see her again , cause no one can predict tomorow, and no one knows what tomorow holds for us. . . . . .
