Prologue

As she sat in the parking lot, Zara could not
remember any time in her life in which she
had felt like this. It was a whole new
dimension, foreign to her. She was fast losing
the battle against the thoughts that
relentlessly tormented and stripped her of any
hope.

Her eyes caught a word that exactly described
how she felt at the moment. Helpless. Alone.
Even as the words came to mind, she could
hear Ima’s voice chiding her for thinking that
way. You shouldn’t ever think that way, Zara.
It isn’t productive. Besides, there is nothing
God can’t do.
Zara remembered with much sadness how she
had rolled her eyes at her dear friend’s
statement. They had been talking about her
love life, Zara’s love life. Zara’s attempt to
throw a pity party with Ima inclusive had met
a brick wall.

Quickly, she wiped away the tears with both
palms and started the car towards the
apartment she and Ima shared until some days
ago.
Decidedly, Zara filled her mind with happy
thoughts, thoughts from long ago. Thoughts
from the year in her life when she met
Imaobong Obi.

EPISODE 1 “Chizara Kelechi Okonkwo! Come out this minute! The school bus is almost here!” Zara rolled her eyes at her mum’s exasperated tone. Her mum only called her full name when she wanted to instil fear. The ploy hardly worked anymore because she knew deep down that her mother wasn’t wicked. Her delay wasn’t due to not being ready and she was sure her mum knew that. At her full age of thirteen, she detested having to ride the school bus with primary schoolers. Having failed to successfully convince her parents to let her go to the boarding school, she knew she was resigned to taking the bus for the next two years. “Chiz-“ “I’m coming, mum.” Zara interrupted with a shout. Closing the door to her room, she half ran to the living room where she knew her mother would be waiting with hands on her hips. A smile softened Mrs Okonkwo’s glare as her daughter came into view. She knew her daughter wasn’t happy about being a day student but there was no way she would allow her only daughter and child be exposed to the dangers of boarding school where she wouldn’t be able to see if anything was wrong with her. As Zara walked out of the house to the school bus, she spotted her father at his usual morning spot, under the hood of the car her grandfather had left them. A Volkswagen Beetle that didn’t work, not that her father would agree. Whenever Zara questioned him about his incessant tinkering with a car she felt would never work, he would told her that giving up was not an option. The school bus drove off as Zara returned her mother’s wave. As soon as the house was out if sight, she brought out the novel that had made her stay back in her room. It was a book about a young girl like her who was stuck in an attic during the Holocaust. The story once again captivated her but not so much that she didn’t notice her bus veer off its usual route. Where on earth was the bus going to? She looked at the houses that lined the streets. They were the kind of houses that she usually saw in Ikoyi when they visited her mum’s friend who lived there. She had no idea that this community existed just ten minutes away from hers. Seconds after the bus stopped, Zara spotted a very fair complexioned girl who she guessed would be the same age as she walking to the bus accompanied by her father. It wasn’t a face she knew and with the extra seconds the father spent with the chaperone that accompanied the school bus, she guessed that the girl was a new student. Gingerly, the girl climbed into the bus and walked through looking for a seat. Zara immediately knew that she would have to remove her school bag for the girl to seat. Being that she was the only one who had an empty seat by her. As soon as the girl sat, the bus moved but not before Zara saw something. The new girl was holding something, the same book she was reading- The Diary of Anne Frank. It would seem that the girl spotted Zara’s book also for in a second their eyes met and in that same second, a friendship that would span fourteen years was born. … “ Ima ooo” Zara called. “Ima, we’ll be late ooo.” From where Zara stood in her living room, she could hear Ima chuckle some seconds before coming out. “Na wa ooo. The way you are rushing one would think you have a date.” Ima said with a laugh in her voice eliciting a shocked look from Zara. She did have a date for the graduation dinner but didn’t want her mum to know about it. Although, even as she thought it, she knew there was no way her mum didn’t already guess it especially with the fuss she had made over her dress being perfect. “Ima! Shhhhhh” She replied with her index finger over her lips. Ima stifled her laughter. “Sorry.” She said with a whisper trying and failing to look repentant. Handing Ima’s clutch to her, she led the way out of the house to the chauffeured 2014 Toyota Rav 4 her parents had gotten to take them to school for the dinner. They stepped out of the house in their identical print dresses styled differently by Ima’s mum’s high profile designer. After posing for pictures Ima’s mum insisted on taking for posterity sake. As they walked hand in hand, Zara marvelled at how two years had flown by. With their WAEC exams completed and Universities already selected, Zara felt very good about the future, their futures. Their friendship had blossomed from that day in the school bus to the point where they had been nominated for best friends in their graduating class for obvious reasons. They were both sole children of their parents with a need to belong. While their friendship was so thick it couldn’t be cut with even King Arthur’s mythical sword, the two, now, young, ladies couldn’t be more different. The only similarity shared was their height and love for fiction. Their heads levelled at the same 5 ft. and 6 inches. While Zara had the sanguine personality, Ima was considered to be the deep thinker. Their complexions contrasted with Zara being dark complexioned and Ima’s skin bordering on being white. That being said, they were both beautiful girls who enjoyed their fair share of attention from the guys. … Zara drove into the compound that housed their apartment in Ogudu, GRA. As usual, the sound of palm fronds gently caressing each other in the Friday evening breeze calmed her. The building housed two three-bedroom apartments, with a detached Bungalow at the back of the house. The detached bungalow had its own entrance and as such, Zara hadn’t met the occupant after the one time when she and Ima first moved in. Her work at the advertising agency didn’t afford her the time. Turning off the engine, she let her mind drift to her conversation at Mrs Obi’s office. The distraught look on Ima’s mother’s face had given Zara some hope that her misgivings would be taken seriously. From the tone of her voice Zara could tell that Mrs Obi was giving it all had because after almost five days, the silence, despite the Facebook activity being seen on Ima’s account, was really loud. In the comfort and privacy of her 2006 Nissan Sentra, Zara picked up her phone and dialled a number. She desperately needed to hear his voice, to tell him what was happening. She needed to hear him say it would be okay because at this point it couldn’t be argued or ignored anymore, Imaobong Obi, her closest, dearest, best friend was missing.

EPISODE 2 The phone buzzed, drawing his attention away from the article he was reading. Before he saw the caller ID, he knew who it would be. As he looked he saw that he was right but the usual good feeling that accompanied his spot on guesses was understandably absent. He had been avoiding her calls for almost a week for reasons he couldn’t even understand. Before his trip to Switzerland for his 6 month course, they had been inseparable. Although, even then, he could see the tell-tale signs of a possible break up. They were signs he recognized from his previous relationships. Howbeit that this time around the feelings were being reversed. He knew it would continue vibrating for almost a minute. She had set up the phone that way. Ringing tones of any kind grated his nerves and as such, his phone was usually with the sound off. His friends had come to accept him that way but not her. She changed it. She changed everything in his life, so much that he was scared. He knew he was in danger – in danger of losing his heart. As much as he hated to admit it – he missed her. So much it hurt. He reached for the phone, momentarily imagining her silky voice warming his cold heart. A flash card from the past raced past his eyes, making him stop abruptly. Shaking his head, he let the phone ring. There was no way he would allow a mistake happen twice in his lifetime. His cousin Stacey’s advice came to him and he hurriedly shoved it aside. Sighing heavily, he got up and walked barefoot to the fridge in his rented apartment. The six month course in Geneva, which made for the miles between himself and his girlfriend, was rounding up in two weeks. All that remained was to turn in his thoughts on a given topic. It felt more like a project to him but the professor had termed it otherwise. Smiling, he pulled out a can of cold Pepsi and downed it thirstily. The humid weather called for lots of cold drinks and air conditioning. He was glad his room had that installed. Taking his former position on the bed with his back resting on the wall, he sat down just as the last buzz sounded from the phone. He picked it up and saw that she had left three missed calls. Tempted to call her back, he paused over the redial button. Then as if burnt, withdrew his finger immediately. The scene that flashed before his eyes from long ago wasn’t one he had remembered in a long time. In fact, he wasn’t sure what was bringing the flashes on but if it was a warning to stay away from her, then, he would obey. Obedience, however, wouldn’t come easy for while he tried to concentrate on the article before him, his mind drifted to the sounds of her laughter. Two lone tears dripped down her cheeks as she sat in her car. Once again, she had reached out and been burnt. After all these weeks of ignored phone calls why did she still reach out to him? She should have known then, when he said the short trip wouldn’t change anything between them, that he had been lying. In the near distance, she heard the sounds of a car driving into the compound. It would be the neighbor they or rather she had met only once. Picking her bag up, she alighted from the car and locked it behind her, sparing some seconds to look at Ima’s car which was dusty from being parked for almost two weeks without being washed. A wave of sadness washed over her and she turned quickly to walk into the apartment. … Iyke woke up to the sounds of knocks on his door. Groggily, he looked at his watch for the time. It was past 7pm. He must have slept off thinking of Zara. That was what happened when one chose to work on the bed. The knocks sounded again. Slowly, he got out of the bed and walked to the door trying to imagine who would be looking for him at that time of the day. It wasn’t that he hadn’t made any friends. All of the male friends, he had made were natives of Geneva and married too. He remembered the shock on their faces at one of the little dinners organized by the school, when he mentioned that he was bordering on thirty years of age and still wasn’t married. Not even the mention of Zara had calmed them down because in their view, if he hadn’t given her an engagement ring before leaving Lagos, then he wasn’t serious about the relationship. Their words that day had gotten him thinking because prior to that, the thought of marriage to Zara, in fact, marriage to anyone had never seemed like a possibility. Not that he hadn’t found any to change his mind. The only experience he had in that regard had left him scarred for life. Opening the door revealed a familiar face he couldn’t immediately place. “Hi!” A cheerful female voice greeted. Iyke smiled faintly in return. He still didn’t know who she was. “I’m sorry for waking you up. I was in the neighborhood and thought to drop by.” Iyke’s arching eyebrow had her rephrasing her statement. She laughed lightly. “I’m saying this all wrong. Hi. My name is Sovie.” She stretched out her hand to shake his. He took it warily and as their hands separated, he remembered who she was. “I am your tour guide. Remember you requested for one at the school.” Iyke nodded and then scrutinized the lady in front of him. Her dark hair was pulled into a ponytail, bringing out her oval shaped face. She looked too young to be a tour guide, looked like she should be worried about shopping and girlfriends. If he ahd to guess, he would say she wasn’t a day older than twenty. “I remember. That was yesterday?” He asked rhetorically. She nodded. “ jah. Sorry. I mean yes. I slip into my native German language, sometimes. You’ll bear with me, no?” She asked with a pleading contagious smile. Iyke found himself smiling too. “No. I mean yes. Besides, it’ll give me an opportunity to learn another language in addition to English.” Sovie almost giggled. “Alright then. Gut. I’ll see you tomorrow in front of the school at 3pm. Come, dressed light and free. The weather is hotter than usual these days.” Iyke frowned lightly. “You have no idea.” He replied. She smiled and turned from the door. It was after he closed the door that he remembered he had forgotten to ask what the second German word meant. As he walked back to his bed, he felt better. The tour around Geneva would be a perfect to his time there. His happiness evaporated as Zara flashed through his mind. He still had that to settle. … She knew it was pointless to dial Ima’s number but she couldn’t leave it alone because it always rang and then went to voicemail. Each time, she would leave a message and promise never to argue with her friend on the usefulness of voicemail. Ima was probably the only person she knew that used the voicemail feature on her phone. Zara didn’t think it necessary and as such would stick out her tongue whenever her friend bemoaned the fact that Nigerians didn’t use voicemails to leave messages. What surprised her was the fact that phone kept ringing even two weeks after her friend’s disappearance. What phone’s battery in the world lasted that long? She didn’t think it was possible for a phone’s battery to stay on for more than two weeks. Especially since her friend’s hadn’t contacted her personally in the two weeks since she didn’t return home from her vacation in Calabar. Being that the voicemail account was still active, Zara resorted to dropping messages hoping that perhaps her friend would be listening. “Hi, Ima. Today is day 14 since you disappeared on me. God knows a day doesn’t go by without me hoping you are okay. Are you okay?” Zara paused and took a deep breath. “Sorry, there. I was getting emotional. Can’t have me putting the waterworks corporation out of work with all my tears. So, let me tell you what’s happened lately. As you know, at least I hope you know, Iyke is returning in about five days. He still isn’t answering my phone calls and I don’t know why. It hurts so much to not know why, Ima. I wish you were here to give me some wise words. You always did have a w-“ Did. She used past tense. Was she beginning to believe what the police was saying? That a person who disappeared without a ransom being sent thus far was most likely dead? “Oh- no. no no no. Ima, you can’t be dead. Please, come back. I didn’t mean to use past t-. It’s just been so hectic and crazy with you missing and Iyke in limbo. Sometimes, I feel like we’ve broken up. Just haven’t said the words.” Another set of tears ran down her cheeks. Please God. Please don’t take them both from me. I’m not sure I can survive that. “Hi Ima. Yep! That was me crying about Iyke again. I just wish he would return my phone calls. As it is, he doesn’t know you are missing.” A text. “A text! Yes. Why didn’t I… I didn’t want to tell him about your disappearance through a chat but as it is if that’s what it has come to, I’ll have to go through that route. He might not want to hear from me but I’m sure he’ll want to know that you are missing. Alright, Ima. Bye. I’ll send him a message and let you know what he says.” … Somewhere in Lagos… A female voice whimpered in fear as the end tone sounded. She felt sticky all over and so afraid. Her mouth was covered with rags that made her tongue dry. “Your friend sounds wonderful. Her concern for you is heartbreaking. So heartbreaking. You miss her, don’t you?” She nodded frantically, hoping that would move the person she didn’t yet recognize to release her. There was silence for some seconds and then the rustling of feet. “I will consider getting her to join you here if that’s what you want then.” Ima shook her head as tears rained. What had she done? God, what have I done?

EPISODE 3 “Hi Zara K.” The male voice said causing her to freeze. Only one person called her that. Her eyes filled as she straightened her back and sat on the floor, momentarily forgetting her search for her lost slippers. Despite not having heard his voice in almost three weeks, she felt the butterflies in her tummy emerge at the sound of his voice. The butterflies fluttering did nothing to mask the pain she felt at surmising the truth that had stared her in the face for so long – Iyke no longer loved her. Had he ever to begin with? She couldn’t remember ever hearing him say the three iconic words to her. Across the miles, he could hear the gates go up, the clink of the chains that further barricaded her. He knew she was closing her heart against him. His chest constricted at the thought. How could I have been so stupid? He cared for her, no doubt but his heart didn’t feel strong enough to take the rejection he would face from her. Oh! But of course she would reject him. His family’s history wasn’t a pretty one. That she had no clue was because he had worked so hard to make it so. Made sure that as long as he lived, no one knew- “Hi, Iyke”, Zara replied, feeling sure that her voice would not betray the overwhelming sadness that she felt. Iyke closed his eyes and swallowed at the cold greeting. He had expected yet never prepared for her voice to be devoid of the warmth that he had inadvertently gotten used to. What did he expect? She waited for him to reply, her body still as if in obedience to instructions she had given her heart. He didn’t know how to continue. He had ignored her calls for so long that – “Iyke?” Was he still there? “Hello?” Did he feel as flustered as she felt? Perhaps he hadn’t meant to ignore her phone calls. Maybe, his phone had gone missing for a while. Maybe – Her heart soared with hope. He cleared his throat. “Hello, Zara.” His business-like reply crashed her castle of hopes like the house built of sand. Zara? Just Zara? “I got your message about Ima. What happened?” He asked as though oblivious to the hurt he was causing her. She had been right in guessing that Ima was the reason he called but couldn’t he at least pretend to care, a bit? While she had a romantic relationship with Iyke, Ima had been his close friend as well. Could it be that they were more than that? Zara shook her head of the doubts that were starting to take root. There was no way. Ima would never do that to me. Sighing heavily, she explained the situation. “Ima went on her annual vacation about a bit over a month ago. She was due back – “ “Where did she travel to this time?” Zara smiled, despite of herself, at the question. Ima was known for using her vacation to reach the unknown parts of the world. Unknown at least to them. Her quest for adventure had grown with age and her job in a major downstream sector oil and gas company afforded her the means to do so. “She picked Kenya this time. Said she had an invitation from a friend she met during her masters in London.” Zara paused for his comment. A sigh escaped his lips. She detected the mixture of amusement and sadness in it. “So, why has she been deemed missing?” “She was returned two weeks ago to the country but no one has seen her. The last conversation we had took place just before she boarded her flight.” He knew Ima. At least he would like to believe he did. She wasn’t the type to be considered flighty. Her adventures were always backed by facts and people that they could contact. So, what was happening? “Have you told the police, her parents- I mean her mum?” Ima’s parents were separated for reasons he wasn’t yet privy to. Did he think her stupid? Why wouldn’t she have informed the authorities and her best friend’s mum? “Yes, I have told them, Iyke.” He sensed her hurt pride. “I didn’t mean it that way. Was just asking to have all the facts.” “mm-hmm. Anyway, the police don’t believe me. So, they’ve turned out to be useless to me.” Why wouldn’t the po- “Why don’t they believe you?” “Well, for some strange reason, her Facebook account is active.” Iyke rested against one of the trees in The Jardin Botanique, a breathtaking park that reminded him of how he felt whenever he thought about Zara. Sovie, his tour guide was some meters away from him. He studied her profile. Being with her in the past three days had opened his eyes to the folly of his ways when it came to Zara. “How is that possible?” If her Facebook account was still active, then he understood why the police wouldn’t take the situation seriously. It would seem that Ima had probably just gone off without telling them. They wouldn’t listen to how much it wasn’t in her character to do so. Or was it? “I don’t know. I think she’s been kidnapped but there’s no ransom note to support my fears. In truth, there has been nothing to suggest even remotely that Ima is in danger.” Zara paused as tears threatened to pour. What if no one ever took her serious? What if Ima never came back? She refused to believe that Ima had deliberately skipped town “Whew… What’s her mum saying about this?” Short of asking questions, he didn’t know what else to do. It wasn’t until he returned to Nigeria that he would be able to do something concrete. Zara let her head fall to the bed as her back touched the hard wooden frame. “At least she’s begun to see reason. Ima would never go at least two days without contacting her mother. It’s been two weeks. She’s definitely seeing my point of view. I spoke with her yesterday. She said the private investigator hadn’t come up with anything yet. I never knew there were private investigators in Nigeria but apparently there are. Anyway, she has hired one. Imagine that? She promised to get back to me soon if anything comes up.” Iyke smiled at his friend’s tirade. This was the Zara he knew and missed. Not the one who answered the phone earlier. “But something is bugging me though.” She said, daring to open up to Iyke. “What is it?” Zara paused for some seconds before answering. It was probably nothing but – “It’s her father. He hasn’t called me to ask any questions about Ima. I want to believe Ima’s mum has told him but I’m not sure. Although, it’s not like they are that close but I can remember a couple of times when he couldn’t reach her. He would call me to speak with her. He hasn’t called me.” “Well, you know the nature of her dad’s job.” Iyke replied. “Yeah… Also, there’s something else, Iyke. Her phone keeps ringing.” Iyke nodded to Sovie’s sign for him to round up. He raised three fingers up to ask for three minutes more. She nodded. “What do you mean by the phone keeps ringing? The battery ought to be dead by now. Right?” A sigh escaped her lips. Yes. The battery ought to be totally drained but the opposite was the case. Another reason why the police thought it wasn’t worth their time. “Right, Iyke which has me thinking. Is it possible that – “ The sentence stopped. She couldn’t voice it. It was absurd even to her ears. “Is what possible, Zara?” “No. I was just thinking that with Mrs. Obi’s political ambition, Ima may have been kidnapped. I know it is a long stretch but it’s still a possibility.” Iyke found himself nodding in agreement. It was a possibility but he doubted it. Ima had never been publicly linked with her outgoing and social mother. “Has her mother said anything in that line?” Her shook sideways in the negative. “No. She hasn’t. Not even when the police asked her. I looked at her face and didn’t see any sign that she was lying about her answer either.” “hmmmmmm… And no ransom note?” “mm- mm. No ransom note. I hope she isn’t being held against her will. Somehow I find myself hoping that she skipped town. It would better, right? Than for her to be in danger.” The wisdom of the hope couldn’t be faulted. He hated to think of Ima kidnapped or injured or possibly de-. No he wouldn’t think of that. She wasn’t dead. God please don’t let her die. Please. Wherever she is fill her with hope. Let her know she isn’t alone. Sovie tapped him signaling that it was time to go. The park was closing already. He hadn’t to see the park but he was thoroughly pleased that he had been able to reach Zara. “It would be better indeed. Ermmm… Listen Zara, I’ve got to go now. I’ll call you back much later.” “Will you?” The question slipped out before she knew it. Iyke guessed he deserved that. “Yes, I will. I promise.” She sighed. If Iyke promised, then he would do it. “Alright, then. Bye.” “Bye, Zara.” She still believed his promises. A flutter of hope began in his heart and then died almost immediately for he remembered that he had promised not to hurt her and had done the exact opposite. … The voices. There were two voices. Ima slowly opened her eyes to the sound of the argument. What were they arguing about? “You are such an idiot. Didn’t you read the text I sent? I explained in detail what you should do and you did the exact opposite. Why are you here?” This voice she knew. It was the voice she heard every night just before Zara’s voice came on through her voicemail. She couldn’t hear what the second voice was saying but she could swear it was a voice she had heard before. The second guy, that she could tell, was being apologetic. His squeaky voice went lower with each word. Opening her eyes wouldn’t do much. They had been covered with a cloth since she woke up in the room where she had been placed. Contrary to her expectation, the room didn’t smell awful, it smelled nice. “No. You won’t. You will go back and return when I ask you to. Only then will you claim your prize.” The voice she knew turned placative. “I’m getting her ready for you. Don’t you worry. Just make sure my package is ready.” The door opened and closed. From the squeaks that ensued, she could tell that it was a metal door. Her ears went on the alert, expecting her captor to come into the room. He didn’t. Not long after, her eyes closed, opening the door to nightmares and a sleepless night.

EPISODE 4 It was simply amazing how since the phone call at the Jardin Botanique, Zara and Iyke felt closer. Perhaps the statement was true that ‘there is nothing like an adversity, to bring lonely souls together. Zara quietly fought the pull back to Iyke. While they spoke more often now, she couldn’t just forget that there was a time Iyke hadn’t been picking her calls and he was yet to apologize or explain what brought about that behavior. For this main reason, she was wary about opening the doors to her heart. Never mind the fact that her heart was in a non-compliance mood. After all, the heart wants what the heart wants and that it most often gets. Sighing, she clicked the sleep tab of her laptop as she readied herself to go home for the day. The commendation letter on a job well done for the early completion of the AGM reports did little to lighten her heavy heart. She missed Ima like kilode. Lately, her doubts on Ima’s safe return were starting to take roots. She feared that her best friend was gone forever but this was something she didn’t dare voice out even to herself for fear that her saying it could make it real. Her eyes moved to the commendation letter and a sad smile spread across her face. It was the lonely house that made her spend more time at the office. It was the avoidance of continuous dark thoughts on her friend’s welfare that had her commit her waking hours to the report. You see. Something good has come out of this. That was something Ima would say if she were around. Always the positive and optimistic one. Exposure to life had slowly shadowed her sunshine personality but if anything it had made Ima’s smile more genuine. Truth be told, Ima had faced more sad times especially with her parents difficult divorce. Throughout that period, Ima’s faith hadn’t wavered. Something that had boggled Zara’s analytic mind. She had been raised in church settings herself but Ima’s seemed to take it more seriously as they grew older. She wondered how her friend’s faith was faring where she was. Assuming she is in danger, right? Zara stopped cold. Where did that thought come from? Of course her friend was in danger. Why else would she poofed without a word? Perhaps she- Zara physically waved the thoughts away. Bending, her head she did something she hadn’t done in a while and since the beginning of the whole Iyke-Ima fiasco. She did something she had seen Ima do lots of times whenever she was distressed emotionally. She prayed. She prayed for Ima’s safe return, for her relationship with Iyke and above all for her sanity because Heavens knew that she was beginning to lose it analyzing the mess in her life. … They were back at the Jardin Botanique. He hadn’t seen it well the first time being that he had been on the phone more than half of the time. It was hard to believe that his six months in Geneva was its end. His return flight was in three days. While his tour ended five days ago, he had asked Sovie to meet him at the park. There were some things he needed to discuss with her. The sounds of German greeting informed him that Sovie was near. She promptly sat beside him. “Hi,” She said with a warm smile. Iyke returned it. Turning on the bench, he looked at her and asked. “How did it go?” A sad depressed look came over her features as she shook her head. Unconsciously, his face took on the same look. “Oh no! He didn’t like it?” Sovie lifted her head and looked at him. “No, he didn’t. He loved it!” Immediately, her face broke into a laugh bringing. Iyke’s face showed his struggle to understand what was going on. Were things alright or not? And then, he understood. She had been pulling his legs. He had advised her on what to buy Henry, her fiancé. It had been his birthday some days back. “Henry loved it. Danke.” Thank you. Iyke understood that. Slowly, he released a sigh that had Sovie laughing. “I got you, right?” He nodded with a smile on his face. “You did. Fair and square.” Henry was a lucky guy as was Zara according to Sovie. Their tour had brought them close and opened his eyes. He was beginning to think that Sovie was the main reason why God had brought him to Geneva. “So, how is Zara? You guys better?” Iyke nodded and shrugged. Perhaps they were. “Her friend’s disappearance has brought us together. We are talking more often. I can’t believe I ignored her when she needed me the most.” “But she has forgiven you, no?” Sovie asked. He shrugged again. “Can’t really say. I haven’t asked her to forgive me yet. We haven’t even talked about us per se. I think she’s waiting for me to bring it up. I don’t think she’ll mention it and I have a feeling that the issue of the disappearance is what has us talking. I’m not sure she would still pick my calls if her friend were around.” He could feel her piercing blue eyes on him. What did she see this time? “I am only twenty years old. Much much younger than you but I have been blessed, jah, to grow up amongst people who don’t hide much from each other. Until now, I haven’t liked that aspect but your experience has made me rethink my perspective. You’ve told me about your not so good past. Something you haven’t told Zara – the very thing that keeps you from giving your heart to her. I do not think you are better off not telling her. Or are you?” Iyke thought about it. It wasn’t the first time he had asked himself that question. “You don’t have to answer it now but think about it. You are leaving tomorrow?” She asked. “No. The day after tomorrow. Tomorrow evening is the closing ceremony or should I say farewell dinner.” Sovie nodded. “Well, I think you should tell her. If she feels as strongly as you have made me to believe, then she’ll accept you. After all, you can’t be faulted for your parents’ decisions. What happened is in the past. Her future with you should hold more promise and if it doesn’t, well, then it wasn’t meant to be.” He couldn’t argue the wisdom in her words but- “What if she goes about telling people after she says no?” There he had said it and the way Sovie searched his eyes out, he could tell that she might not have considered that line of thought. “That’s what truly scares you right? The fact that someone will find out and then your high profile will be turned to dust.” Her voice was soft as she voiced out his deepest fears. Not trusting his voice, he simply nodded. Sovie smiled sadly. “Well, here’s the shocker, Iyke. People know already. There will always be someone out there who knows. Someone who was there when it all happened. So, that fear will always be with you?” She shook her head. “No. you shouldn’t do that. Tell her. If she leaves, not so good yeah? But I know she’s not the kind to go spreading tales about you, right?” Iyke released a long held breath. Sovie was right. About everything. His profile as one of the most eligible bachelors in his given field had come to mean so much to him. It could most likely be the end of him if the truth were to come out. However, that didn’t seem as scary when compared to living his life without Zara. It surprised him to find out in recent times that she had snuck past his well erected defenses into his heart. Somehow, he didn’t want that to change, horrible past or not. “You are right, Sovie. Thank you. Danke. Danke Danke so much.” Sovie laughed at his mixture of words. “You are welcome. Iyke, you are one tourist I won’t be forgetting in a hurry.” Iyke smiled at her words. “The same could be said for me too. Obviously with you being the tour guide I won’t forget in a hurry.” Another bout of laughter followed. “Now, tell me. Have you set a date for the wedding?” Sovie’s eyes twinkled as she went on to fill Iyke in on the preparations for her upcoming nuptials. … It was a day to Iyke’s return and Zara was feeling all kinds of feelings. She felt happy, apprehensive, excited all at the same time. He had told her the day before that they needed to talk. As though she didn’t know that already. However, she sensed that something had changed. He felt closer in a sense she couldn’t put to words. Deciding quickly, she went to her wardrobe to pick out her blue dress to wear to the airport. She had promised to meet him there. A quick search revealed that it wasn’t there. Was it dirty? She backtracked looking around her room. It couldn’t be. She hadn’t worn it in a while. In fact, she hadn’t worn it since- A sad smile spread across her face. Ima had borrowed the dress for her trip. Zara’s comment that people would know she was borrowposing hadn’t fazed Ima. In fact, because of the statement, she had told Zara she would deliberately wear it on her trip back home. The phone rang bringing her attention back to the present. She glanced at the clock. It was some minutes past ten. Who would be calling her that late at night? Her lips curved upwards at the possibility of it being Iyke. It was a number she didn’t recognize. She put the phone to her ears but heard nothing. The silence was almost scary. At that exact moment the lights went off. What followed next chilled Zara to the bone. It wasn’t that the laughter sounded evil. That it did. It was a familiar laughter from long ago. Laughter that she thought, had been promised she would never hear again. The call ended and the phone slipped from her fingers crashing to the floor. Not remembering the phone, she cupped her knees as she sank to the floor. How? How did he find me? How? EPISODE 5 She trashed and screamed. There was no one to save her. She needed to get air. Air! Where was she? Her eyelids felt like a huge weight lay on them. Struggling, she opened her eyes even as the suffocating feel further engulfed her. Quickly, she looked around. She wasn’t under water and she realized that the air felt surprisingly calm. She sat up slowly, taking in air as she did. It had been a panic attack. After some minutes, Zara got up and walked to her bathroom where she splashed water on her face. Without asking herself, she knew what brought on the panic attacks she’d had, two nights in a row. It was the phone call that triggered something she hadn’t struggled to forget. It just hadn’t come to mind since it happened almost nineteen years ago especially since her family moved out of that neighborhood and state. He had been the headmaster of their school and over time became a good family friend. Being an only child, she was used to being treated specially. So much so that, it hadn’t seemed odd when the headmaster began to seek her out. He would buy her snacks during recess, pick her to perform special tasks when important visitors were coming to the school… She was also part of the after school class that he organized for only the best students. It constituted bragging rights to be named among them. The lessons usually held in the school premises with them majoring on debates, mathematics competitions and essay writing with other teachers in attendance. Eventually, she was chosen for a debate competition, an aspect the headmaster oversaw personally. Since her parents were aware of the classes, they saw nothing wrong with it. Also, the awareness of pedophiles wasn’t high back then in the early 90’s. Much as she tried, even now as she looked into the bathroom mirror, she couldn’t remember the exact details of what happened. The psychologist said it was probably a good thing. Her parents told her that when her mum got to school to pick her as usual, she hadn’t been there. Her mum was informed that the headmaster drove out with her. She had thought then that she would find Zara at home but that wasn’t the case. There were no cell phones back then. It was much harder to reach people. That same night, her parents had driven to the address he had given them sometime earlier but there was no one there. In fact they had been informed that it was his house, he hadn’t been there in over three months. The gateman there had no forwarding address. Zara shuddered to think of what would have been her fate had her dad’s brother not been the commissioner of police at the time. It was because of this that her case was given an amber alert. Three days after her disappearance, at around 1am, one of the policemen stationed in the building opposite spotted light coming from inside the building. Calls were made and within minutes the house was raided. She had been in a drugged state at the time or so she had been told. All she remembered of that time was the laughter. When she told her mum, she was assured that she needn’t worry because the guy was locked up. Her requests to be told what actually happened to her met a brick wall. Her father had made the topic off limits and her mother always slipped into teary moods. So after a while, Zara had stopped asking. She looked at the time. It was past 4am. Knowing that sleep wouldn’t return, she turned on her laptop and went to work. She would place a call to her uncle. Perhaps, she could find out if she was in danger again. … A sad mood descended over him as he wheeled his luggage out of the apartment he had stayed in for the last six months. He was happy to return to Nigeria but was also sad to leave Geneva. A car’s honk distracted him from his thinking. It was time to go. He got to the airport in enough time to go through the checking-in process with additional time to spare. As he sat down to wait for his flight to be called, he decided to place one final call to Zara. “Hello, Zara K.” A smile spread slowly across her face, making her feel lighter. “Hi, Iyke.” She responded, hoping that the despair she felt wouldn’t show. Iyke detected the silent sad sigh. “Are you okay?” Zara thought for a moment on what to tell him. She wasn’t okay. Her uncle informed her and her parents much to her chagrin that the guy responsible for her kidnap in the early years of her life had been released on good behavior due to an amnesty pardon initiative by a newly elected governor. So far, no one knew where he was. The growing technological landscape could not yet boast of technologies needed to track him down. Her parents were already clamoring for her return home which would undermine the reason why she had moved in with Ima- for privacy and proximity to her business analysis job in Victoria Island. “I’ve been better.” She surmised was the safest answer. There was no way she would begin to explain all that was happening over the phone. It could only be said in person. “Really? What’s the problem, my dear?” Iyke asked, his growing concern showing on his face and sitting posture. Zara smiled at the endearment. It warmed her somewhat. “Nothing that can’t wait till you get back. When I see you, we’ll talk.” Her assured tone made him feel better. “Alright then. You’ll be there? When my flight touches the ground in Lagos?” She thought about the warnings to stay indoors because of the kidnapper at large who might be seeking revenge but decided against it. She couldn’t stay cooped up indoors all day for the rest of her life. “I’ll be there waiting as promised.” She responded. “Yayyyy… it’s nine hour flight, give or take some minutes. So I should be landing at approximately, 7:30am tomorrow morning.” His obvious excitement at her decision to come receive him stamped an approval on her decision. After the call ended, she placed the phone on the table and thought back to the recent happenings. Her friend was still nowhere to be found and there was something bothering her. If she didn’t know better, she would be able to swear that when she went to work, someone usually entered the house. Zara stood up from her bed and walked to Ima’s room where the tell-tale signs existed. They weren’t glaring but couldn’t be missed by her. Her friend Ima was the immaculate one between them. She kept her things painfully tidy and couldn’t stand for things to be placed wrongly. As a result and due to countless corrections on the topic she knew where Ima kept certain things and also knew that short of a lobotomy, nothing would have made Ima do otherwise. Maybe she didn’t know better. After all, their locks were not one of a kind. Any determined person could gain access. Sighing, she picked up a pair of slippers to take to her room. She would wear it to the airport tomorrow morning. Sweeping a glance over the room, she turned off the light and closed the door behind her. Setting her alarm to 6:45am, she laid on her bed, her tradition of turning off the lights discarded in the light of the latest news. Her eyes closed after a quickly mumbled prayer and succumbed to the sweet darkness that enveloped her. … It was a partnership that seemed to be working especially since he was seeing the chance to fulfill his side of the bargain. A tingling sensation swept over him at the thought of what awaited him some days from now. All he had to do was deliver her to Peter and he would get his due reward. His eyes hardened at the remembrance of lost years. Slowly, he relaxed his posture. It would be okay. His line of work gave him access to gadgets most Nigerians would only see in foreign movies. So far, he knew through a planted receiver in her house that her stupid boyfriend would be returning tomorrow. Now was the time to act before they began to spend all their waking hours together. She would be leaving very early for the airport. The fact that it was a Saturday made it all the more easy for him. Using the lever, he lowered his car seat to rest for the next day’s planned adventure. Come tomorrow morning, he would be rested and ready.

EPISODE 6 His flight had landed over thirty minutes ago and there was still no sign of Zara. He’d hoped it was traffic responsible but he wasn’t so sure anymore. Did she change her mind? Shaking his head, he headed for the Bureau de change. He couldn’t call her to find out where she was because his local line needed to be reactivated and because he had relied on her to come pick him, he hadn’t bothered about money for a taxi. Fortunately, he was in possession of some dollars which he could change into naira. Some twenty minutes later he was in a taxi to his apartment in Lekki. An apartment he knew his cousin Stacey would have ensured was cleaned properly by available hands. Because he knew her so well, he knew that there would be food in the freezer awaiting his arrival. Without thinking about it, he tapped the driver and asked him to stop in front of the experience center they had almost missed. He didn’t know why but he felt the unexplainable urge to reactivate his dormant line. … Bright light pierced through her eyelids as she tried to open them. As she opened them, something told her all was not well. Looking up and sideways, she saw that she lay in a car, constrained with climbing ropes knotted impossibly around her wrists and as far as she could see, her ankles. From what she could see, it was a Jeep. At least the interior looked like one. For some reason, she couldn’t fathom, Zara didn’t feel the need to fight the hold of the ropes. Instead, she busied herself with tracking her steps and trying to figure out how she had ended in a stranger’s Jeep. The car bounced again sending sharp pain through every inch of her as the back of her head made contact with the floor of the car. She willed herself not wince loudly guessing she was only safe or undisturbed as long as her captor thought she was asleep. As the pain resided, she looked at her wrist and had to swallow the relief she felt at the continued presence of her wrist watch. It was some minutes past 8am. Luckily, her wristwatch was one of those that told the day of the year. It’s still Saturday. How did I end up here? The last I remember is leaving the house for the airport. Iyke! He’ll think I purposely left him hanging. I’ll have to convince him when I see him. If you see him. She couldn’t discount the wisdom in the words that permeated her being. If. The word singularly stripped her of any hope. Then, a thought occurred to her. Perhaps, it was all a joke. Maybe, she was overreacting. Yes. She was bound but it could mean – Mean what? Against the backdrop of the mysterious call and Ima’s disappearance, it really did feel like she was in danger. Ima’s disappearance. Could it be- The car came to a halt and she quickly closed her eyes. As she did, she prayed for strength in the coming days because she had a sense that she would need it. … He couldn’t help but be worried. Since reactivating his line, he had placed almost thirty calls to Zara’s number but the operator insisted that the number was switched off. It was now past 9pm in the evening. There’s no way Zara will let her phone be dead for this long. Not the Zara I know that practically lives on Instagram. Maybe her phone was stolen. Deciding quickly, he walked out of his apartment to his car and drove to Ogudu. He was just parking when he noticed Zara’s car in the driveway. Ima’s was there as well, although dustier. The reason wasn’t hard to guess. Could Zara have been at home all day? As he turned off the ignition, and walked to enter the compound, he noticed a figure slowly come out of the house. Following his better judgment, Iyke stayed put outside the gate and observed through the metal bars. The man who was visible under the full moon which brightly lit the compound looked to be elderly, possible bordering on almost fifty years old. With surprising agility, the man sharply descended the three stairs and walked briskly towards the back of the house. It was a good thing that the pedestrian gate was opened. He was able to enter in without the gate making any noise. As he approached the building, he noticed that no lights were on inside. Already, he had surmised that Zara wasn’t in the house. The full moon shone brightly, catching surfaces and making them glitter. Iyke’s eyes caught a shiny object on the floor. As he bent, electricity was restored the compound was now flooded with night lights from the street. The shiny object turned out to be that back of Zara’s phone but what was it doing there on the floor beside her car? Had it fallen off without her knowing? Then, he spotted the reason why the phone calls were not going through. Her phone lay in pieces under the car. It was obvious it had fallen from her hand and the only reason why she would let it still be there would be for two reasons. The first reason was feasible. The fact that she probably didn’t know where her phone had fallen. The second reason was unbearable to consider. He didn’t even want to pursue that line of thinking. Picking up the three components, he hurriedly put the battery into the phone and covered it with the back. Tempted to turn in on there and then, he decided to walk to his car instead. Considering where he was, he knew it wouldn’t take much for some misguided neighbor to consider you a possible threat. In the safety of his car, some five minutes later, parked in front of a popular eatery, Iyke pressed the power button. A sigh of relief escaped his lips as the inner lights came through. The lights also revealed that the screen was badly cracked, in a thousand multiple places even. The phone must have fallen suddenly, without any attempt made to break its fall. Just as the phone finished booting, a text message came in, followed by other messages and notifications. The text message was from her mum. Alright, dear. Be safe. Give our love to Iyke. He smiled at the greeting and as he did, several questions began to pop up. Since when did Zara give her parents updates about her movements? The Zara he knew was highly independent. Something was obviously not right. Looking closer, he saw that there were up to ten text messages exchanged between mother and daughter in the past three days. He scanned through the messages. Be careful. Come home. Be safe. Don’t worry, mum. God is watching over me. Was this the regular correspondence between mother and child? It was a foreign concept to him. He hadn’t had anyone worry about him to this extent in a very very long time. Was there something else? He couldn’t help but feel he was missing something. Then, his eyes saw that the very first text message in the thread was three pages long. It took him less than two minutes to absorb every word. When it dawned on him what had been happening, he purposefully shoved aside his feelings of hurt at not being told. The second reason he had tried not to consider was becoming more real by the second. Could this have anything to do with Zara not showing up at the airport? Not finishing his thoughts, Iyke placed a call to Zara’s father for if he knew anything about the man, it was that he wouldn’t rest until Zara was considered safe and sound but that wasn’t all, Iyke wanted to know first hand what all the messages were about. Even as the call went through, he found himself dreading the truth for he feared he already knew what it was.

EPISODE 7 In the safety of his apartment, he quickly examined the spoils of his evening walk. The excitement cooled as his invisible partner reminded him again of the unpalatable consequences of his actions. Imagine! You! Frank Odo, CEO of the nation’s leading movie making studio. Distinguished, elite, a man of unmatched class… I know. You don’t have to remind me. Oh! But it looks like I have to. Your private house tucked away in a quiet area doesn’t mean you won’t be caught one day. He stood up and walked out of the vault. It was true. His house was private. Thus was where he came whenever, he wanted to be alone. It had been willed to him by his best friend’s father. After some remodeling to the main building which housed four apartments, he had added the cute apartment at the back with its own private entrance that was remote controlled. Being conscientious man, he required little help in maintaining the apartment. Why did they have to move into his building? It was against his policy to handle the rental process by himself which was why they were there. They had come in through the property firm he used. Turning, he locked the vault and watched as the façade fell into place. He truly did love the place. A wistful smile spread across his face as he held up the soft lacy fabric to his nose. Taking a moment, he inhaled deeply and as he did this, tears dropped quietly from his eyes. The voice was right as it usually was. He knew he had to stop but he missed his Ella so much and the owner of the fabric he held was the closest he would probably ever get to bring near her again. Still, he had to stop and soon too. That his tenant who had met only once smelled like his late daughter wasn’t a reason that would be tenable in court. Sighing, he walked slowly to the kitchen. It was time for dinner. … In the two days that had passed since Zara’s disappearance, Iyke’s world seemed to have stopped, come to an abrupt halt. After speaking with the COO, a long-time friend of his, he commenced a two week leave. His prayer was that before the two weeks elapsed, his Zara would have been found. Already, he had Zara’s parents and Ima’s mum working together amidst motherly tears. While they were still not sure the ladies had been abducted by the same people, one thing was sure, both girls were missing and a coincidence couldn’t explain that. So far, no ransom note had been received by either of the parents. This was leading them to believe that perhaps they had been taken for reasons other than money which if correct would be a much worse scenario. Zara’s uncle was due back in the country in two days. In his absence not much could be done. The matter was already reported to the police but so far there were no leads. Iyke parked his car and alighted. He was soul weary, scared and really worried. If the kidnappers didn’t want money, what did they want? A shiver crawled up his spine as the answer came to him. Inside his apartment, he crashed on the sofa in the living room and lay there quietly. It was hard to believe that someone could disappear without a trace. It was almost like she was dead- only she wasn’t or maybe they just had no way of knowing yet. Pray. Breathe. Pray again. Those were Stacey’s words. In obedience to his cousin who was always in his business and thankfully so, he closed his and with a very heavy heart cried out to God to save the love of his life because while he was aware that life would go on without her, he wanted no part of that sort of life. A life without Zara’s warm smile wasn’t something he would ever contemplate. … Their chance meeting at the pub, not too far from the prison, had been timely. Else he wouldn’t be a happy man today. That meeting had made a way for his dreams to materialize. Dreams that had been forcefully suffocated by a woman he loathed. He parked the car and took a deep breath in order to contain his excitement. His wristwatch read some minutes to midnight. Under the cover of the night and with his special license plate, he hadn’t been stopped on his way to his friend’s house. Turning in his seat, he spared the lady, bound on the floor just behind him, a glance. “She is asleep. That’s good. Getting her out of the car shouldn’t be a problem.” Within seconds, the ignition was turned off and he stepped out of the car. He had to go inside and see if the necessary arrangements had been made. He did feel a bit sad for the young lady. He wasn’t sure what her fate would be but she wasn’t too great a price to pay for what was rightfully his. … If she wasn’t so sure that she had hit her head sometime in the past 15 or so hours, she would have sworn, sworn to her last blood that she knew that voice but she had hit her head and it still hurt a lot. If the voice that had spoken some minutes ago reminded her of someone she knew, then, she couldn’t be surer of a possible concussion because there was no way, absolutely none at all it was who she thought it was. It definitely wasn’t the voice that had called her on the phone. … There were moving. That she was sure of. Why? She couldn’t tell. The voice hadn’t said anything to her. He had just lifted her and carried her to a car whose engine was already on. His moves seemed frantic and yet calculated almost like he had planned for this but hadn’t intended to move. Minutes later after, she was placed in the car, he entered and drove off. The stillness of air and absence of car sounds informed her that it was night. After what seemed like hours or maybe just a lot of minutes, the car came to a halt. He carried her and for some minutes walked. The smell that permeated her immediate surroundings wasn’t good at all. She felt like throwing up. Fortunately, he dropped her on a soft carpeted floor and closed the door behind him. Something was definitely up. What was it? As she did whenever afraid or unsettled, she recited Psalms 91. Even with the fear that terrorized her heart, the scripture never failed to calm her heart. … It irked him that he would have to travel another almost two hours but the reason was understood. It was for their safety. Zara waited for him to speak again. She didn’t dare open her eyes for fear that he would know she was awake. He didn’t speak. All through the ride he remained silent. Dear Lord, please help me. Please. … With a start, Iyke jumped up from his bed. The meeting with Zara’s uncle had proved to be a good motivation. Mr. Okonkwo (Snr.) still commanded respect within the force, having risen to the position of an Assistant Inspector General. Iyke had also gotten the feeling that many improvements had taken place during his tenure. An idea was slowly forming in his head, a good one. Quickly, he placed a call directly to Mr. Okonkwo (Snr.). Hopefully, it would be the break in the case.

EPISODE 8 The meeting went better than Iyke expected. It was agreed that the option he proposed be pursued. All that remained was to tidy up the mechanics before proceeding within the next 12 hours. Hope filled the air as they dispersed. … Sorrow and fear filled her heart as she lay on the floor of the car. In addition to the sorrow, she felt shocked and almost numb at the confirmation of her worst fears. The car had stopped again after leaving the first place they had gone to. As the man driving the car alighted, his phone rang, rather loudly, most likely due to the quiet of the night. The darkness of the night stopped her from seeing his face but the distinct nasal sound couldn’t be mistaken. Ten seconds was all she needed in addition to the fact that he had identified himself by his nickname. Dede. Tears ran down her cheeks. No. No. No. It’s not possible. There has to be a mistake. It can’t be him. If it wasn’t him, what was he doing carrying her all around town bound in his car that has always been touted to be untraceable. It meant – No one will find me! Jesus. Please help me. Please. I’m not ready to die or be raped either. Please… As she prayed, her mind tried to find a reason, an angle, any angle to hitch the unexpected turn of events on. She couldn’t. Between herself and Ima, the man had devoted more time and effort to winning Ima’s affection. Usually, he went through her. Using her to try and persuade Ima to have a change of heart. I am her – For heaven’s sake! Ask her to come out at least. If she doesn’t want to see me again after today, I promise never to look for her. Even back then, the words had seemed rather harsh. They still did. However, she still couldn’t see what she could have missed. Searching her mind, no signs or inklings came up. Could it have been a ruse? Dear Lord… … He was needed back at work. By the next morning. That meant he would have to leave his precious cargo for a while. A short while he hoped. His boss had promised that but he had learnt long ago to never count on that. In the end, one had to do what was needed irrespective of how long it took. But I’m on leave. Why me and why now? Still he couldn’t say no. Not to the job and definitely not to his commander. Quickly, he reached for his back pocket and brought out the mask. The risk of having her see his face was too great. While everywhere was pitch black. There was no telling what could happen. Pulling it on he strode to the car coms few steps away and opened the back door. … As the car door that led to the backseat opened, the rush of air reminded her of her filth. Without a doubt, she had never been this dirty in her life before. The filth was somewhat expected but not accepted. Being on the road for almost 24 hours could do that to someone, more so a female on her monthly cycle. She willed her eyes shut and pretended to be deep asleep. With her legs being bound and the night being black, it would definitely be foolhardy to try to escape, at least for now. A needle pierced her arm after being pulled out a bit from the car. For some minutes she struggled against her assailant. Her pretense soon became a reality as she succumbed to the effects of the anesthetic. … Once again, he was happy with his level of access at the agency. Slowly, he dragged her out and lifted her across his shoulder. The smell that emanated from her body was more than he could bear. So, he quickly rushed into the building which blended with the meager buildings around it. … The voices woke her up. They were raised and seemed to be arguing. “I do not understand why you had to bring her here in that filthy state. She’s obviously on her period. Did you not notice?” “No. I did not and if it wasn’t for the stunt you pulled in changing the address, we wouldn’t be in the position. Would we?” A grunt was all the reply he got. It was the first time Ima had ever tried to move from her position. Usually, she lay down, sat up, alternating between the two positions. She wasn’t bound anymore. Obviously, the man didn’t consider her to be flight risk. The room she was in was quite different from the place they had hurriedly moved from. It was quite bare, with just a bed in it. The bathroom looked clean at least. She moved closer to the door in order to hear the conversation better. “Why do you have that stupid mask on sef? ” “You have to ask. She could recognize me in a split second. You think I want to get caught? Come on! I haven’t come this far to get caught now.” “Okay. Okay. Just put her in there. That’s where the second one is.” Ima staggered back to her bed due more to the shock that was reverberating through her body than the fact that the door would open in any second. She was barely on the bed when it opened. … As agreed, just four of them went to Ogudu: Iyke, Mr. Okonkwo (Snr.), who Iyke referred to as AIG, and two other plain detectives. The AIG and the plain detectives came in one car while Iyke came in Stacey’s. Hers was less obvious than his. The terrain to cover wasn’t too much. They would search the girl’s apartment for clues while they visited the three other flats in the building. One of the detectives was left at the girls’ apartment. The three of them proceeded to check the other three apartments together. All through the operation, Iyke couldn’t help but notice the manner in which AIG conducted his affairs. One wouldn’t believe he was part of the same police force that was said to be useless. Although retired, the knowledge gained from his studies and exchange programs abroad were still evident. Only one of the apartments turned out to be occupied, by a woman and her three children. It was obviously not who they were looking for. Decidedly, they walk to the back of the house and that was when they saw the pedestrian gate. It was unlatched. They went through it with Iyke in the middle of the three men. He was key to recognizing the man they were looking for. The man who Iyke had spotted under the full moon the last time he came to the apartment. … A knock on the door distracted Frank from his newspaper reading. He ignored it thinking he had heard wrong. Then, it sounded again. This time more urgent. He dropped the newspaper and walked to the door, wondering who on earth could be at the door. He hardly, if ever received visitors at his vacation home. When the door opened, he knew the game was up. The almost invincible nod told him something that he didn’t need to ask. He had been found out. But how? “Please come in gentlemen.” AIG nodded and they entered into the surprisingly well furnished apartment. Surprising due to the unassuming nature of the outer environment. “How may I help you, sirs?” AIG, the unofficial but obvious leader of the group spoke. “Without further delay, I’ll explain and hopefully it’ll get sorted out. The two ladies who live in one of the apartments in the other building are missing. One has been missing for over 4 weeks now and the second’s disappearance is going into its first week. The young man with me says he saw a man come out of that apartment some days ago, precisely the day of the second’s disappearance. Some seconds ago, he identified you as that man.” Frank felt relieved but didn’t show it. They didn’t know why he had been in the apartment but he had been seen. “Am I to take it that I am a suspect in their disappearances?” He asked as he took his earlier vacated seat. “No. We just want to know what you were doing in their apartment.” AIG replied. Without thinking too much, he replied. “I went in to close a window. The window had been open for days. I knew the darker one wasn’t around. She travelled. The other one, well, I –“ “How?” “How?” “Yes, sir. How did you know the darker one wasn’t around? How did you know that she travelled?” Frank thought about the question and what to do with it. Do I show them how? If indeed the darker one is missing, then I have no choice. Sighing, he stood up and signaled to them. “Follow me, please.” In truth, he hadn’t gone into the room since the darker one travelled. There had been no reason to do so. In addition, there was no perceived security threat which was the sole reason why the cameras had been installed. As they followed, Iyke wondered on what the elderly man could possibly have to show them. He also wondered at why AIG was being so gentle. He could be the culprit they were looking for. The second plain detective waited outside in the living room while AIG and Iyke followed Frank. Using a security code, he granted them all access to his security room. “Here sirs, is how I knew she had travelled.” … The mask was still on his face as he carried the young girl into the room. He hadn’t expected her to be there. … Ima was shocked, surprised but not so much that she couldn’t speak. “Hi, dad.”

EPISODE 9 He didn’t answer. Instead, he froze. How- does she know? I still have my mask on. Now wasn’t the time to get into the much desired discussion. His eyes fell on the door to the bathroom. His partner had informed him there was a tub. Gently and behaving as though his daughter hadn’t spoken, he walked to the bathroom door with Zara in his hands. The man she had just called dad walked on into the room. He was carrying- Oh! No! Not her! Her legs found strength and intercepted the man as he walked towards the bathroom. Standing in front of him, she was even surer that it was her father but why he would be involved in this was beyond. “Where are you taking her to?” there was no attempt to hide the anger that she felt. “Why did you bring her here? What are you doing here?” There were answers but he didn’t trust himself to speak yet. He swept his all over her. His partner had kept his side of the bargain. She did look well considering the circumstances. He took a step and she blocked it. Another step was blocked. The scene brought a smile to his face. Indeed, she took after her mother in stubbornness. “The bathroom. She needs a bath.” came his reply. It was him! Her nose caught a whiff. Her friend had to be on her period. “and you are going to be so magnanimous to offer your services?” The sarcasm masked her fear. “No, Ima.” There was no point denying it further plus there was no one for her to tell her discovery. “I was just going to put her there, for you perhaps?” The lady he was carrying wasn’t heavy by his arms were starting to ache. She didn’t reply. How could she? Her chest felt tight. It was as though she couldn’t breathe. Then, it occurred to her. Her friend wasn’t, hadn’t moved in all almost five minutes of the back and forth. “What’s wrong with her? Why isn’t she moving?” “She’s asleep.” He moved again and she blocked his way yet again. “If she’s asleep and I’m to bathe her. It won’t work. Put her on the bed.” He hesitated before he saw the wisdom in her words. She would have to call on one of them to carry a probably naked bathed lady back to the room which was obviously not wanted. Slowly, he moved to the bed and laid the cargo on the bed. “Put her on the bed and leave.” The ice in her words chilled him. Perhaps this scheme wasn’t a good idea. Even as he stood, he couldn’t see it working. It doesn’t matter. Either way she’s stuck with me. Glad that the key was still in her room, she locked the door after her father and settled down by her friend for a good cry. … Working with their instructions, he rewound the security tape to the day Ima left for her vacation. Through the screen, they saw the laughter on both ladies faces. Carefree and happy. “So, why do you have a room set up like this? What are you looking out for?” Iyke asked, unable to keep the questions to himself. The chair turned as Frank faced them. “I make movies. Ordinarily, it oughtn’t to be a basis for targeting but it is. Maybe it’s just paranoia. Although, I know it isn’t. My sources have informed me that I’m a target for possible abductions. Why? I really don’t know. Plus, it’s my house. I can choose to install a security system if I so desire.” “Your house?” Iyke wasn’t aware that the landlord was living just behind the building. He doubted the ladies knew too. “Yes. My house. I rented out the building through my agents. This is the only place I seem to be unknown. Perhaps due to the fact that I don’t got out much when I vacation here.” AIG cleared his throat. “Do you go over the footage every day?” He asked. Frank shook his head. “No, I don’t. There’s a security firm paid to do that. They analyze the footage for possible threats.” “hmmmmm” Deep in thought, AIG scratched his chin. “I have an idea. Can we go, is it back or forward, to the date you returned? Iyke, what day did you return from Geneva? The day Zara was supposed to meet you at the airport.” Iyke did some quick calculation of the dates. “The 19th.” “Please sir, take us to the 19 , a week ago.” AIG asked. Frank turned to the computer and after imputing some strokes, the day in question was brought up. “If she coming to pick you up at the airport, she would have wanted to get to the airport before you or just in time right?” “Yeah… We had spoken the day before. My flight was to land at around 8am. So, she would have been leaving the house around 7am.” “alright. Then. It’s also a good thing there are security lights because I’m not sure of how bright-“ “That’s her.” Iyke almost shouted, pointing at the screen. They watched as she came out of the house and locked the door. She was almost at the door of her car when they saw quick movement. The man was quick. Within seconds he had his hand covering her mouth. Together, they saw the phone fall to the floor. Speaking into her ear, he kept his face hidden. Whatever, he said worked because left the side of her car and walked in the direction she would have driven. She walked in front of him, no doubt obeying his instructions, with her head bowed. As they walked out, the man stole a glance at the building, giving the camera the opportunity to capture his face. Iyke staggered back as the face froze with the pause button being clicked by Frank. “Jesus!” AIG held him by the arm to stop him from falling. “Do you know him?” All four eyes were trained on him. “Yes, I do. The light isn’t adequate but yes, I know him. That’s Ima’s father.” AIG left Iyke’s arm. “Are you sure of what you are saying?” “Yes, I am.” “What’s the problem?” Frank asked. “He’s saying that the man on the screen is the father of one of kidnapped ladies.” AIG replied. Frank look bewildered at the suggestion. “But that doesn’t make any sense.” “In my experience, it never does. Please can we get an enlarged printout of that frame?” Mixed feelings aside, he would offer any assistance with the hope that his misdemeanor be forgotten. “Sure. Just give me five minutes while I work that out.” … It was a good thing she had been kidnapped with her luggage. Funny that she saw it as a good thing. It gave her the tools needed to clean her friend up, not an easy task though. The sanitary towel ought to have been changed at least four times over given the heavy flow her friend usually experienced. Immediately, the door closed, Ima got to work with a towel and some water mixed with disinfectant. The first wash was almost unbearable but she went on. It did give her some much needed reprieve. Three Weeks Later… Mrs. Obi picked up her clutch and walked to the door. She had a function to attend. One that didn’t hold any sort of appeal for her. Her daughter was still missing after almost two months. Her ex-husband was being implicated in the kidnappings. It wasn’t public news but she knew it wouldn’t be long or at least until he was found. An APB had been put out. His job as a secret service agent stopped them from issuing a public wanted poster. The reason was that it could hinder whatever investigation he was part of. So, whatever, they had to do would be done under wraps. She bent and picked up the keys to her car. Mrs. Obi opened the door and walked to her car. Entering the driver’s seat, she slot the key in the keyhole and started the car. “Hello Darling.” Her hand paused above the handbrake. She turned slowly and was brought face to face with her ex-husband. “Hi, Dede.”

EPISODE 10 Shocked as she was to see him, she didn’t dare show that she was afraid. What if he doesn’t know that we are on to him yet? Could this be – could I be the help needed to bring my daughter back? “Dede, where have you been? I have been trying to reach you for ages.” She decided to take the approach of a neglected mother and wife, albeit, an ex-wife she presently was. His right eye arched in surprise. “Really? Is that so? Well, I never thought that this day would come. You! Miss me? Wonders do never end.” He laughed lightly, feeling pleased. “Don’t flatter yourself, Dede. I have never entertained such lofty thoughts, not since you decided to become a beast.” “Watch your mouth, woman! Do not let me get upset. You know what happens when I get upset.” A frown now framed his face, erasing signs of mirth. “Only too well.” Letting out her breath, she decided not to antagonize him. “Dede, our daughter is missing.” “Ima is missing. That’s why I’ve been trying to reach you. She’s been missing for almost three months now. No ransom note has been sent. I don’t even know if she is alive or dead.” Easy tears of sorrow trailed her cheeks, slowly undoing minutes spent in front of the mirror. Opening her purse, she brought out her petite handkerchief and dabbed her cheeks. “When did she go missing, Emem? When? Why didn’t you tell me?” Emem detected anger in her ex-husband’s voice. Could the police be wrong? “She never returned from her vacation.” Her head bowed, she absorbed the anger from him. “Which vacation? The one to that African country? Since? Jeez! Emem, sometimes, you make me so angry. How can my Ima be missing and you haven’t deemed it fit to inform me? What? You think I don’t deserve to know?” She felt like winding down the windows but didn’t want to risk their conversation being out in the open. “What do you expect? I never have your phone numbers with you changing them per second. I tried to reach you through your commander or boss, whatever you call him. He said you were on leave and couldn’t be contacted. So, tell me. How else was I supposed to let you know?” “That’s not possible. He can contact me. Did you tell him why you were looking for me? Because I don’t be-“ “Of course not! Why would I tell him? You always said you didn’t want anyone at the service to know about your domestic affairs” “And you chose this all important time to obey that instruction?” He shook his head in disbelief. “Oh well… let me leave you to attend your event.” He made as if to leave the car. “Just like that, Dede. Won’t you do anything about it?” “God! Emem! Of course I will. Do you want us to start discussing tactics here?” “No. It’s just you were going to leave without saying anything.” “Well, I haven’t ever been a man of many words. That’s one of the reasons you divorced me , right? For not sharing?” He did the quote and unquote signs at the mention of the word sharing. “Anyway, I will do something about it. I will find our daughter, Emem. You can go to the bank with that.” Emem sighed in relief. “Thank you, Dede. Please I have one more request.” She raised her teary eyes to him. Hoping he didn’t sense her distrust and act. “Your phone number. So that I can call you for updates. I promise I won’t disturb you anything. I’ll call at night or in the morning. Whenever you prefer. Just please.” … It had given him a heady feeling to be begged by Emem. Emem begged me. This world is truly coming to an end. He watched her go back into the house, pleased that he had ruined the evening for her. Given time, this plan of his could turn out right. … A little over three months ago… Dede sat in a lonely corner of the famous Pub 9. Its fame came from being visited by prison officials and ex-convicts alike. He was with a glass of his favourite beer wondering how his life had deteriorated so. Without the love of his daughter, he felt cut off, like a discarded limb. No amount of awards or accolade earned in the line of duty could make up for the loss. As it stood, she was ignoring and shutting him out of her life and it was all his ex-wife’s fault. She hated the very sight of him. Dede was pretty sure she had planted evil thoughts about him. Unfortunately, there seemed to be nothing he could do about it without getting caught. A shadow blocked the already dim light. “Is this seat taken?” Dede looked up. It was obvious that the man in front of him wasn’t a colleague. People, even colleagues alike, avoided him. So, who was this dude that looked so sure? Peter took the seat before the nod came. It didn’t matter. He needed to work some things out with the man. The man had something he needed. His sources had informed him on his release from prison where his girl was. His twenty years in prison had been spent dreaming of his girl. He didn’t blame her for his incarceration. All that was in the past. “You are Dede, right?” He started, skipping the pleasantries. Dede relaxed in his chair. Peter took that to be a yes. “You don’t look okay. Hope all is well.” He wasn’t sure if it was the drink at work or the confident manner with which the man sat in front of him but he found himself talking. By the night’s end, they had come up with a plan, to help each other. What was left were the fine details that needed to be taken care off. … It was three days since Emem saw Dede in her car. He’d had no updates so far but she was hopeful. If anyone could crack the case it would be her ex-husband. While there was no love lost between them, his deep seated affection for their daughter couldn’t be mistaken. As the thought crossed her mind, she remembered the allegations. What would he have to look for if his daughter was already with him? Had he taken both of them? Why would he come to see her? Perhaps he was just playing her for a fool. Emem sighed. Who was she to believe? Her husband who hadn’t given her any reason to suspect him or the security camera which clearly put him at the time and place of the kidnap of her daughter’s best friend. She sat on her bed cradling the phone, deciding whether to call him or not. AIG had asked her not to do anything stupid and she wouldn’t but she was tired of waiting, of doing nothing, of crying herself to sleep. The feeling of despair was gone from her. It seemed like the appearance of Dede had given her hope. Perhaps if he was with Zara, Ima could be traced as well. Perhaps, there was something connecting both kidnappings. Quickly, she made two calls before placing the all-important call to Dede. … Ima and Zara cherished their time together. It was obvious from statements made by Ima’s captor. The man still wore a mask around them not wanting to risk anything. Their days were being spent talking, sleeping, playing games, laughing, praying. They both rotated depressed days with one always being able to comfort the other. While their kidnap wasn’t a good thing, they were grateful to God that they had each other, if only temporarily.

EPISODE 11 Emem’s call to AIG was to notify him of her plans. Her next call to Dede was to further rope him in. The night before, his words, spoken just outside the courthouse as they walked away from the Judge who had given her sole custody of Ima, came to her. I promise you, Emem. I will stop at nothing to get you back even if it kills me. No matter how long it takes, we’ll be a family again. She had shivered then as his words chilled her to the bone. His declaration hadn’t been made out of love but out of a need to control her, anyway possible. In truth, she hadn’t thought about the chilling words in over eleven years because the need hadn’t arisen. Somehow, he had disappeared from the scene. Is his grand plan to- I don’t even understand what is going on? Why did he take Zara? What does he want with her? Does he think she knows where Ima is? Her ex-husband wasn’t a suspect in the kidnapping of their daughter but in that of their daughter’s best friend. I can only imagine what Zara’s mother is going through. At least she knows who took her. He can be found but Ima’s case is different. There’s zilch information from that end. She shook her head. No. No. No. Two mothers shouldn’t have to go through this at the same time. I have to contribute especially in Zara’s case even if it means that the father of my daughter may face life imprisonment. This was why she called Dede. She had invited him over for updates on Ima’s disappearance. However, even as she recounted her plans, they sounded too easy not to be smelled by Dede. He was an astute man, always being able to sense things. Would he not smell this rat from over a mile away? Sighing, she stood up. Her ponderings were pointless now. No matter what she felt about her plans, she had to go through. He had agreed to come. Imagine that! It must be God working things out. Dear Lord, the same way you got him to agree to come, please grant me the serenity and calm to carry out this plan. It most likely doesn’t have anything to do with my daughter rescue but I can’t sit still and do nothing. I’m counting on you for help, supernatural help. Her prayer said, she went ahead to prepare for the evening. With just three hours to go, not a minute could be wasted. … “You know I still don’t know how you were taken.” No. The subject matter wasn’t being avoided. It just hadn’t come up. Whatever medication was given to her in the car carried out its effects for three days during which Ima fretted and prayed. “That’s true.” Ima replied with a smile. “Well, you didn’t ask.” She said with a light laugh that had Zara rolling her eyes. “Yeah, right. Okay. I’m asking now. What happened? When and where?” It was evening. They had just eaten cereal. That was all they being fed. Cereal, milk and water. It was a miracle that none of them had fallen ill. Perhaps it was the ploy – to make them physically weak enough not to venture escaping. “Well, I had just gotten my luggage from the custom and had wheeled it out towards the car park when a taxi stopped in front of me. Because I had that my taxi guy lined up already, I told the guy I wasn’t interested. So, he moved on. After waiting ten minutes, I dialled his number. It didn’t go through. I decided to chill for another ten minutes before using someone else. After which the first taxi guy drove in front of me. At this point it was starting to drizzle already. I asked him quickly if he knew Ogudu. He said yes. I got into the car with my luggage in the boot and the car zoomed off. That’s all I remember, Zee. I’ve tried, tasked my brain to remember something else but nothing has come out yet.” Zara let out a deep sigh. “Did you get to see his face? As in do you know him?” Ima went silent at the question. The way you know it’s my father that kidnapped you? “No Zee. I didn’t get to see his face. I didn’t, then. I haven’t, now.” Her reply came out testily. Zara understood her defensive reply. She couldn’t imagine the shame that her friend was feeling at finding out that her father was involved in the whole fiasco. Never mind that they hadn’t seen him since the day he brought her there. “Alright, Ima.” She said nothing after that. An uncomfortable silence came over the room and for some minutes they lay on their backs looking at the ceiling. Some seconds later, Zara heard sniffing. Imaobong, the brave and courageous one was crying. “Why is your face leaking, dear one?” Ima smiled at the question. It was one that she would have asked if the tables were turned. She took a deep breath and let it out. “Sorry, Zee. I don’t mean to be a party pooper. It’s pooped enough as it is. I just ….” “No need to explain. You had to let it out right?” She patted her friend gently on the palm. “Meanwhile, I think I know who it is that took you and I think I know what is going to happen. I will tell you but please don’t brush it off as a long stretch of my imagination.” Ima chuckled at the ending part of Zara’s statement. “Alright, shoot. I won’t brush it- I wont do whatever it is you said.” They both laughed at that as Zara recounted the events from well over nineteen years ago that had possibly led to this day. … With the meal carefully prepared, and the kitchen cleaned. She sat down in the living room to wait for her guest. He was expected any moment from now. The second and equally crucial part of her plan was in place. Hopefully, everything would turn out fine. A knock on the door startled her. She stood up and walked to the door. Special care had been taken to not look desperate. She didn’t want to seem too eager. The door opened when she was sure it was Dede. It opened to let in a strong whiff of alcohol. As if I don’t have enough things troubling me already. The scene seemed too familiar, like she had seen it before. As she turned after closing the door, she felt a rough hand on her arm. “Woman, get me my dinner.” Emem froze. His dinner? What is he talking about? Was he drun- Of course he is drunk. “Dede, leave me alone.” She shrugged out of his hold, slipping into the part she had played for the last four years of their marriage. “Woman, give my food or else I’ll-“ He sat heavily on the chair. “No need to shout. Ima is asleep.” She paused for the reaction. There was none. It was as though the clock had wound itself backwards, as though they had gone back in time. “S-s-s-ooooo, g-g-et m-my foo-“ “I will, Dede.” Quickly, she rushed into the kitchen and served the Jollof rice with Chicken into two plates. He had never been one to eat alone. Hated it. He ate voraciously, which was different from his usual MO. Usually, whenever he was drunk, he slept off before the food came but today was turning out to be different. Downing a glass of water after the meal, Dede relaxed on the couch as snores soon after escaped from his nostrils. Emem watched in amazement. It was definitely not her doing. Five minutes later, she opened the door to let in AIG and four other hefty police officers. Given Dede’s training, there were not willing to take any chances. Quickly, he was handcuffed and carried out of the house. She followed closely behind them after locking the door. As she got into her car, she wept and prayed, her heart full of gratitude to the One who had watched over her.

EPISODE 12 “Why didn’t you tell me? My God! When-” “No, Ima. It wasn’t intentional. This happened before you and I met.” “Yeah, I know. I’m just wondering why it hasn’t come up all this while.” Against the wall on which their backs rested, Zara shrugged. “It isn’t something that has remained in my consciousness every waking moment. I just know it happened. I have snatches of details that flash across my mind but I have never been able to recall the events fully. All that I told you is what my mum told me when I asked.” “hmmmmmm…. Anyway… it is well.” “Yes, it is. Now, back to my theory. I think that the person who picked you is the guy from the story.” She paused for her statement to sink in. “From the story? Which story?” “The man that kidnapped me. I think he is the one that you know took you from the airport.” Ima turned her face to look at her friend. It didn’t make any sense. Why- “Why would he do that? I have never met him before.” “Our friendship is enough reason. Maybe he took you to cause me pain but then that doesn’t explain why your dad took me unless…” Zara let the statement hang. Is it possible? Could that be the reason? “Unless what?” Ima asked quickly. “It wasn’t until he called that night that I knew he was out of prison. We didn’t expect him to ever be released. After twenty years and good behaviour, a new governor granted him amnesty. I think that he would have been stewing and plotting his revenge in prison. You know the other guy has been muttering something about you leaving soon. Maybe it is as we thought. Maybe we are going to be exchanged. As in you go to your dad and I go with the other guy.” Her excitement at the possible unravelling of the matter was much dampened at the fact that it was reality. “If only it was a movie and not our lives we are speculating about. If only…” She let out a sad sigh. “Zara, what’s the name of the-. Do you know his name?” “Yes. His name is Mr Odili. I don’t know if he’s changed it now.” Outside the door, Peter’s spine straightened at the mention of his name. She remembers my name! A satisfied smile spread across his face. Always been a smart one, that girl. What rankled him was the fact that Dede was presently unreachable especially two days after his supposed stint was to be over. Picking up his phone, he dialled Dede’s number again. There was still no connection. Today is Thursday. I’ll wait till the weekend. … Before his eyes opened, he knew something was different. He knew he wasn’t at home or any familiar place. Where am I? How did I get here? The air smelled stale and much like so many large rooms he had used in the past. He tried to stand up and realized he was bound. The knots couldn’t be undone by him. Have 1 been found out? Who blew my cover? Dede turned his mind for possible frenemies he had made in the curse of his job. Voices coming closer put him on an alert. One thing was very certain; no one would get any information from him. He would rather die. “Is he awake?” The voice did not sound the least bit familiar. “Yes, I am.” Dede replied. It was better they get the whole thing over with. “Why am I here?” He asked, the usual nasal sound totally non-existent. “Bros, calm down. We are not in a hurry. It’s not our fault that you have been sleeping for almost two days.” The speaker was the second and more heavyset of the two. Two days! What did I eat to make me sleep for two days? He tried to remember the events up until three days ago but his mind was blank. Had his memory been erased as well? What’s happening? He couldn’t remember anything from the past three days which he didn’t like. Not at all. Puts me at a disadvantage with this people especially since I don’t know what they want with me. One of the guys stood up and walked out of the room but not before he saw something that made him stop cold – the X sign with a band around middle – inscribed just below the elbow. These men weren’t frenemies. They were, are his people, his brothers at arms. A shiver passed through his spine. He had been taken by one of his own. … “Does he know?” AIG asked the man standing beside him. “I reckon, not yet or maybe. He ought to have by now if he is as good he has proven to be.” “Boss, he’s awake.” A nod was the reply. He left the AIG and walked into the room that held Dede. As the distance grew between them, AIG thought about the wisdom of the present collaboration. It was an unspoken rule that the secret service agency be contacted once one of its agents ended up in the custody of the police force. This, he had done the moment they drove away from Mrs Obi’s house where he had been arrested, albeit, unconventionally. … One of my own? Why? It had never crossed his mind. Perhaps, they were impostors. Quickly, he scanned the room for a means of escape but even as he did, he knew he wouldn’t find any. There was a reason why he chose brightly lit large rooms with no windows. The door opened. Dede breathed a sigh of relief. His boss was here. Boss is here? No. No. Boss will never betray me. Noooo. Something must be wrong. Boss took the seat just in front of Dede. The two men now stood behind him. “Dede, good to have you back.” He didn’t venture a reply. No one did when Boss had the look. Dede racked his brain for what he could have done. He didn’t remember any offense. “I can imagine that you are surprised to find yourself in bonds, held by your own people. Although, I wonder why that would be so considering the clandestine activities you have chosen to engage yourself in. Now, Dede. I would like to ask you a question and you have the permission to answer. What’s our number one rule?” The answer had been drummed into his sub consciousness from the moment he entered the agency. Don’t get caught. “Don’t get caught, sir.” Boss nodded. “You do remember. In the twenty years of you with the agency, you have never once broken that rule until now. You know what happens afterwards, right?” Dede shuddered to think about it. The person was usually treated like a pariah. Once again, he tried to remember. His recent stint had ended without a hitch. “You do know. Now, if it was just that you got caught in the line of duty, it would be understandable, somewhat. However, you got caught doing something else. You got caught committing a crime. You will have your chance to explain but I would like to remind you that we have evidence should you choose to lie. So, what I would like to know, is what you were doing at 8, Tade close on the 19 of March with your palm across a lady’s mouth and your firearm pressed into her back. He tried not to show it but failed. The moment he sighed, he knew coming clean was the only way out. Boss stood and walked out of the room. It did matter to the agency that he was a distinguished agent but nothing could be done about. What he had done was a slight on the agency’s name. They would have to work overtime to ensure the press got no wing of it. “Do you think it’ll work? He is one of yours.” AIG asked. Boss smiled and nodded. “Oh! It will. I have no doubt about it. He is guilty alright. Since he knows the drill, he knows that we are not playing games. We will just give him some hours to stew. Patience is all we need now.” That said, he led AIG out of the viewing room.

EPISODE 13 Before his unit commander returned, Dede made up his mind. Trying to lie would be a stupid decision, not sensible at all. Somehow, he was tired. Deep down he had known. The truth was that he’d intended to cause Emem enough pain- just as much as she caused him when she fought for and gained full custody of their only daughter. Never mind the fact that his work hours were totally unsuited to raising a daughter. What have I done? But do I just up and confess? And let down my partner? Nah… I couldn’t do that. He’s counting on me. I can’t do that. Besides, either way, it would seem that Boss already has something to use. Why give him more ammo? To shoot me down? While the thoughts were yet in his mind, the door opened to usher in Boss. Slowly, Dede took in a deep breath and let it out, readying himself for the ordeal ahead because if he knew anything about the agency, it was that they would stop at nothing to uncover the truth, more so when it now concerned the agency’s pride. “Are you ready to talk?” “What about?” The sudden blink told Dede that the Boss hadn’t expected that. “About the kidnapping.” The slant position of the back rest added to his relaxed state. Either way he was finished. Decidedly, he would go down fighting. Boss stretched out his right hand and was promptly a brown envelope. Without taking his eyes off Dede’s face, he took out eh A4 sized paper and held in front of Dede’s face- long enough for Dede to realize that he couldn’t bluff his way out of the situation. “Well, it doesn’t really matter if you tell us or not, we have all the information we need.” He stood up. “Just thought to give you the opportunity to do the honourable thing and possible get a lighter sentence but that chance is gone. Need I remind you that we have your car with the GPS tracker we installed. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten. You championed the project. You said it would help track agents’ movements. Thanks to that solid advice, we are already mapping out the routes your car has taken in the past three months. Oh! And God help me that I find anything worthwhile, I’ll see to it that you don’t get your day in court.” The last statement was underlined with steel further imprinting the implications of his actions in his heart and mind. As Boss walked out for the second time, Dede closed his eyes and let the tears fall for the first time in almost twenty years. He was totally finished. In the five years since the tracker was installed in all their cars, he had never once turned it off. Hadn’t seen the need to do because so far he had been a boy scout until that fateful day. The day he met Peter. … Oh! Something is wrong alright. Or has he gone on another mission without informing me? Probably has. The idiot. Must be why his wife divorced him. Sh*t! What do I do? Didn’t intend to stay here this long. Peter was seated on the back porch of his house. The plan had been to exchange the girls such that he got Zara and his partner got his daughter. At this rate, it would take forever for that to happen. An idea he didn’t particularly welcome. For the umpteenth time, he dialled Dede’s number. After the loud ring tone, the call suddenly ended. Something it had been doing for a while. It took a lot of willpower for him not to smash the phone. He looked up to the sky. There would obviously be no moon tonight. It was pitch black. He had to use the flashlight from his phone to see his way back in. Wasn’t he afraid of being seen? He wasn’t. There was hardly any occupant left in the neighbouring dilapidated buildings. Anyone who saw the light would automatically assume the bearer had gone to answer the call of nature. Changing his mind, he walked to the front to ensure that it was locked with the padlock. A trick his partner had told him always worked. Anyone coming to the house would assume that there was no occupant on seeing the closed padlock. … Zara heard movement and hushed voices. What is going on? The voices became louder. She pinched Ima who lay beside her, sleeping soundly. In her lowest possible voice, she called her name. “Imaaaaa… Ima. Wake up.” “mm..mmmm.. hmphmm… Zee, let me sleep nau. What is so important that can’t wait till morning?” “I think your dad is back.” At that statement, Ima’s eyes opened. Slowly, she sat up. “Lie down joor. You want them to know we are awake?” “What difference does it make? They’ll wake us up if they have to. I, for one, want to look my father in the eye and ask him to explain this madness.” Distant sounds of a door opening drew their eyes to their own door. Unconsciously, they linked fingers as they waited with bated breath. They would be leaving each other soon if Zara’s theory was right. Either way, play time was over. … The gun poked his back again, prodding him forward into the house. He couldn’t believe his bad luck. Would this girl forever elude him? Dede! That idiot must have talked but how? “Keep your hands in the air and walk straight.” Peter knew better than to disobey. These men weren’t the usual police detectives. He wasn’t sure but he could swear that they were Dede’s colleagues. No doubt the game was up and he was on his way back to – ? No! I am not going back there. Slowly, he put his hand down against the instructions of the man behind him. Knowing his way in the darkness, he lifted up the pestle that lay just behind the door they were approaching. Using the advantage of surprise, he took down the officer behind him. Before he could go further with his attack, a bullet pierced through his thigh bringing him down to the ground. … Zara and Ima fell into each other’s arms at the sounds of the bullet. It was obvious that something was up. The door swung open and three men entered into the room. A voice came through their radios. “Located?” “Yes, Boss. There are two of them, sir.” “Repeat.” “There are two of them, sir. Two females, sir.” “Bring them both.” “Yes, sir.” Zara and Ima looked on in confusion. Were they being saved or not? As they walked out of the building through the now open front door, Zara spied a familiar face standing near the cars parked. As soon as a way was made for them to pass through, she looked for the face. It was her uncle. Happily and tearily, she jumped on him as Ima breathed a sigh of relief. They had been saved. … Emotionally exhausted and physically spent, the ladies slept off in the back seat of the car that carried them away. It was almost dawn when they got to AIG’s house. They met the three parents waiting impatiently. The joyful gasp that escaped from Mrs Obi’s mouth warmed AIG’s heart. He had gone in for his niece and had brought back both ladies. Iyke hung at the back of the little tearful and excited crowd. He didn’t want to intrude on the family reunion. As he stood and watched, his eyes filling with unshed tears, he silently thanked God for bringing the matter to a good end. Thank you Lord for keeping them safe, for bringing them back. For bringing her back. “Iyke!” Ima called excitedly. He laughingly enveloped her into fierce hug. “Imaobong! Welcome back. I never thought the day would come in which I would miss your teasing.” “Yeah right! When I start now, you’ll be begging for mercy.” “Tease all you want.” He pinched her cheeks. “I’ll never complain again. Ima laughed and her laughter elicited smiles on the faces of those around. Zara hung at the back. What would she say to him? Were their issues still unresolved? How was she to greet him? Iyke approached her as though she were a deer and he, a hunter. “My Zara K….” He walked until he was just in front of her. Opening his arms, he invited her in. She accepted. The warmth from the hug warmed every cold part of her heart. “Don’t ever leave me again, Zee.” Their arms were wrapped around each other as Zara cried on Iyke’s shoulder. Silently, he let the tears fall down his cheeks. “I promise, Iyke.” “I missed you so much I thought I would die. I went crazy wondering what had happened to you.” Ima, now at her mother’s side watched the exchange. She was glad to be with her mum. Glad to be free. In the safety of her mum’s embrace, her gratitude went up to God. Mr and Mrs Okonkwo held each other as they watched the loving exchange. Their daughter was back. All would be well.

FINAL EPISODE A tap on the microphone broke into Zara’s thoughts. She had been daydreaming again. Was it just a year ago that she and Ima had been kidnapped to fulfil the sick fantasies of two men who were now rotting in prison? It was hard to believe. God had indeed given them garments of praise instead of mourning. Sounds of a loud whistle had the people seated laughing. “See your friend behaving like a bush girl.” Iyke whispered. He was looking quite dapper as ought to be expected. In fact, everyone was. Her bridal dress was being raved about all over social media having been designed by Mrs Obi herself. A design that was being said to be fit for the gods. The wedding reception was taking place on a yacht with only close family and friends in attendance. By the time vessel docked, the ceremony would be ended. Having never been on a yacht, she marvelled at its beauty. The decorator had also done an amazing job making the place wedding reception ready. Iyke had clearly spared no expense. He was so good to her. “Well, she is doing what she deems necessary, my dear. See how people have given her their attention. Let’s just hope she doesn’t say anything embarrassing about us.” Iyke laughed. “Knowing her, that’s all she’ll say.” Ima’s creamy voice replaced the hardly fought and achieved silence. “Ladies and Gentlemen, a little over an hour ago, my dear friends, Iyke and Zara were pronounced husband and wife.” Sounds of clapping and cheering filled the air. The scene brought tears to Zara’s eyes. Indeed Lord, you have been faithful. Thank you soo much. She did have a lot to be thankful for. “But their story isn’t totally a rosy one. They have gone through so much to be here today. Through it all, God has been faithful, honouring His words in their life.” Zara nodded. With kidnapping about a year ago and near demise of her relationship with Iyke, it definitely hadn’t been a rosy year. Especially after Iyke told her the reason why he had been distant for a while – he was the son of convict who had faced the firing squad after being rightly accused and proven to be the leader of the famous armed robbery gang. She knew nothing of the story except what Iyke told her but she saw enough in his eyes and heart to know that he regretted the stain on his family name. Never mind the fact that it wasn’t public knowledge. He hated that he couldn’t be perfect for her… “The way I am for you? I’m not perfect, Iyke. No one is. That’s why we need and have Jesus. With Him in your life, I am sure of the kind of character you’ll produce.” “ohhohoh… she promised she wouldn’t be mushy.” Zara commented to her newly wedded husband. He held her hand and squeezed it. “That’s what you get when you ask a lady to give the toast.” Zara playfully punched him as the statement ended. “You see what I’m saying. They are best of friends which is something I wish for everyone.” The audience laughed. Iyke and Zara, I love you guys soo much sometimes it hurts. I pray that God’s blessings will continually encompass you. His favour will be evident. You will lack nothing and when my god-children come, you’ll have all that is needed.” Zara looked at Iyke and they both laughed at Ima’s self-nomination. She was indeed a wonder to behold. “Ladies and Gentlemen, let’s raise our glasses filled with wine, juice, water, any liquid at all, and give a toast to the lovely couple- Mr and Mrs Iyke Chike. May laughter never cease from your mouths. May your marriage be full of live, joy, peace, abundance and every good thing you both desire. As God has created this union, may He sustain it and cause nothing or no man to put asunder. Cheers to the couple. Cheers!” The clinking of glasses and shouts of Amen filled the air as people cheered. Iyke hugged his wife as the noises provided a cocoon. Ima looked at her friend and they exchanged winks laughing in between. Joy and laughter filled the air, hopefully, a sign of better days that were yet ahead. “None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing – nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable – absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us,” The Message. *** The End ***
